Mark Peel, Trailblazer of California Cuisine, Dies at 66

Mark Peel, a trailblazing chef who helped create modern California cuisine and a dining renaissance in Los Angeles, has died. He was 66.

Peel died Sunday at a Los Angeles hospital, nine days after he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, his daughter Vanessa Silverton-Peel told the Los Angeles Times.

“My dad in so many ways was really ill-fit for the emergence of this whole rock star-chef era,” she said. “He always thought of himself as a cook, he thought of himself as doing manual labor.”

His career, however, was a roadmap of legendary dining.

Mark Peel, Famed Restaurateur And ‘Top Chef’ Judge, Dies At 66
Image
Mark Peel, the influential Los Angeles chef who founded Campanile with his ex-wife Nancy Silverton, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 66.

It was reported that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer just nine days ago.

Peel appeared on Top Chef Masters and as a judge on Top Chef in 2009 and 2010. Peel also made appearances on Hell’s Kitchen, Knife Fight and Kitchen Nightmares.

Campanile was a favorite among Hollywood power players in the 23 years it was open. The James Beard-winning restaurant stood at 624 South La Brea before closing its doors in 2012. The late, venerated food critic Jonathan Gold wrote of the restaurant, “It is hard to overstate Campanile’s contributions to American cooking. It wasn’t the first fine restaurant in the country to operate with a grill at its heart, but it codified the style, as well as the practice of reinterpreting simple dishes — steak and beans,...

Mark Peel, Campanile Co-Founder Who Appeared on ‘Top Chef Masters,’ Dies at 66

Mark Peel, the influential longtime Los Angeles chef and restaurateur who founded Campanile with his ex-wife Nancy Silverton, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 66.

His daughter told the Los Angeles Times that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer just nine days ago.

Peel appeared twice on “Top Chef Masters” and was a “Top Chef” judge in 2009 and 2010. He also made appearances on shows such as “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Knife Fight” and “Kitchen Nightmares.”

For 23 years, James Beard-award winning Campanile was a favorite spot for Hollywood power lunches and celebratory dinners. Built on La Brea Avenue in a historic building that was built for Charlie Chaplin’s offices, Campanile closed in 2012 and the building now houses Republique.

When Campanile closed, Jonathan Gold, who was married at the restaurant and freely admitted he couldn’t possibly be unbiased when writing about it, wrote, “It is hard...

Top Chef (2006)
'Top Chef: Just Desserts' recap: There's no crying in the pastry kitchen!
Top Chef (2006)
I can barely keep track of who’s whom at the start of a reality-show season. There are too many people on screen, faces start blending together like grains of sugar and salt in a white bowl, and names like Heather H. and Heather C. don’t help much, either.

But thank you, Seth, for coming out so early in the competition as this season’s nut-job. (It helps my brain immensely.) Sure, Angelo’s erotic relationship with food on this past season of Top Chef was weird, but bursting into a crying fit in front of a guest judge?...

Pub Grub: The Master Chefs Have to Remake Homey Classics on Top Chef Masters
Ah, pub food. For all of its humble origins, British pub food is exactly what I crave on a long, cold night, conjuring up an image of a roaring fireplace and a nice pint of lager. It's earthy, homey, stick-to-your ribs sort of food and it's just as often terrible when it's made without care or love. But in the right hands and in the right kitchen, it's just the thing to banish the mid-winter blues. On this week's episode of Top Chef Masters ("Pub Food"), six master chefs from Season One--Jonathan Waxman, Ludo Lefebvre, Mark Peel, Rick Moonen, Wylie Dufresne, and Graham Elliot Bowles--returned with a second shot at glory as they reunited in the Top Chef kitchen to compete for charity, a spot in the next round of competition, and a chance to redeem themselves. But in order to do so they'd not only have to...

'Top Chef Masters': Preview of Episode 2.3 "Pub Food"
Top Chef Masters (2009)
From soul food to pub food, tonight's episode of Top Chef Masters will feature six not so new chefs who'll try to convince "high-brow" clients - in other words, the normal people you see on Top Chef Masters - that good food doesn't necessarily have to be made of unpronounceable ingredients.

Top Chef Masters' Season 2 Goes into Full Gear

The "seemingly impossible" challenge is to show these people that enjoyment can be found on reimagined pub grub. Competing will be Graham Elliot Bowles, Jonathan Waxman, Ludo Lefebvre, Mark Peel, Rick Moonen and Wylie Dufresne, who, as you probably notice, have all done Top Chef Masters in its inaugural season. Is it redemption for these chefs? Or rejection anew?...

'Top Chef Masters 2' lineup meets 'Modern Family,' Andrew Zimmern
"Top Chef Masters 2" really turns up the heat with a slew of fun celebrity guests as well as returning chef'testants seeking redemption.

Among the guests will be the cast of "Modern Family" (perhaps a family style meal challenge?), "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening (yellow food?), Hank Azaria who voices Moe and others on "The Simpsons," "Lie to Me" actor Mekhi Phifer, Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak and a trio of the "Real Housewives of Orange County," Lynne Curtin, Alexis Bellino and Tamra Barney, reports EW.

The site also lists Andrew Zimmerman as a guest, but since Wikipedia says Zimmerman is a professor of German history at George Washington University, we're going to guess that they meant Andrew Zimmern, host of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods." German food, while exotic to some and rich in history, probably isn't as challenging as what Zimmern will bring to the table.  [Update: In a press release sent out Wednesday, Bravo confirmed Zimmern's participation.]

Now on to the chef'testants.

'Top Chef Masters' Season 2 Lineup Revealed
Top Chef Masters (2009)
Less than two months before Top Chef Masters season 2 kicks off, Entertainment Weekly has revealed the list of the top-caliber chefs that will be competing for the title of, well, Top Chef Masters. If there was much bickering and not-so-professional attitude on the regular Top Chef last season (yes, this guy named Mike Isabella, among others), again prepare to be dazzled by top-quality dishes and less animosity between these world-renowned chef-testants.

Among the 22 competitors are six returning chefs from Top Chef Masters' inaugural season, including Graham Elliot Bowles,  Wylie Dufresne, Ludo Lefebvre, Rick Moonen, Mark Peel, and Jonathan Waxman. Among the more notable names in the lineup, meanwhile, are Chicago chef Tony Mantuano, New York's David Burke, and Los Angeles' Susan Feniger.

Julie & Julia DVD Review
Julie & Julia (2009) whipped up a frothy $120 million tally at the box office during its surprisingly successful box office run, and now it's arrived on DVD via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. For anyone who missed the film in theaters, the DVD is a treat -- for several reasons. First, there's the film itself. It's vastly entertaining, if imperfect; so good, you wish it were just a touch tastier. Meryl Streep disappears -- that's what she does -- into the role of Julia Child, the late, great chef and co-author of that cookbook evergreen, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Her story, how and why this unusually tall, rather plain-looking woman became a culinary legend, and how she managed to get her book published, is intercut with a contemporary and also-true bit of business about struggling writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams), who blogs to the world about her efforts to serve up every recipe in Child's book,...

A culinary legend provides a frustrated office worker with a new recipe for life in Julie & Julia, the true stories of how Julia Child's (Meryl Streep) life and cookbook inspired fledgling writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams) to whip up 524 recipes in 365 days and introduce a new generation to the magic of French cooking. Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada) co-stars in director Nora Ephron's delicious comedy about joy,...

Hell's Kitchen: Preview of Episode 6.10 "7 Chefs Compete"
On tonight's episode of Hell's Kitchen, Suzanne is still there, hanging on to dear life, and I'm kind of loving it, if only because it annoys the hell out of it Tennille. "Suzanne the mouth" is now on the blue team, and from the looks of it, everyone is hell-bent on giving her a hard time. But regardless of whether she's going or not, tonight looks to be a pretty intense episode, with something harsh happening to Dave - so if he goes, Suzanne gets to stay one more week?

On "7 Chefs Compete" Gordon Ramsay shows the chefs a glimpse of The Araxi via a satellite tour. They then need to use 15 local ingredients that were flon in from Whistler to create three unique entrees. Olympic gold medalists Sasha Cohen and Jonny Moseley are guest-judging, and the winning team gets to eat with Mark Peel, while the losers are forced...

Jennifer Is Top Chef’s Top Gun
On Wednesday's Top Chef, the remaining cheftestants were enlisted for a challenging -- and patriotic -- task: Cook a meal for over 300 members of the U.S. Air Force and their families with whatever supplies, foodstuffs and cooking equipment they could find in the kitchen at Nellis Air Force Base. It was tough task, sure, but ultimately a heartwarming one that found the group pulling together as a team. Still, as always, someone was sent packing at the end of the super-sized episode. Quickfire: This week's guest judge should have been pretty familiar to loyal Top Chef Masters viewers: It was L.A.-based chef Mark Peel, and he presided over an "out of this world" potato challenge. (Padma's words!) The contestants had to produce a delectable potato dish from one of the seemingly zillion varieties of spuds sitting in the kitchen. Peel dubbed Jennifer Carroll the winner for her...

Spellbound: Illusion, Surprise, Mystery and Spectacle on "Top Chef Masters"
I can't tell you how excited I was that Top Chef Masters finally returned to the airwaves last night after a far-too long two week hiatus. The series has become a highlight in my telly-viewing week and last night's episode of Top Chef Masters ("Magic Chefs") was no exception as the four latest master chefs--Anita Lo, John Besh, Mark Peel, and Douglas Rodriguez--has to prepare a dinner for actor Neil Patrick Harris and his friends at Los Angeles' famed Magic Castle using the four elements of stage magic: surprise, illusion, spectacle, and mystery. I was a guest at the Magic Castle, a private club for professional magicians, about two weeks ago and fell in love with the quirky charms of the place, a former mansion turned clubhouse and multi-staged venue where magic reigns supreme. It was only fitting then that our master chefs should have this unique location...
