J.R.R. Tolkien
I saw The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Tale on stage! Is it worth checking out?
J.R.R. Tolkien
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings books have been beloved for nearly a century. Peter Jackson's movie adaptations are still watched regularly. As we speak, Prime Video is rolling out the second season of The Rings of Power, its Lord of the Rings prequel series. Why not add a stage musical to that lineup?

Way ahead of you. The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Tale has music by A. R. Rahman, Värttinä and Christopher Nightingale, with book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus. A version of the show premiered in London way back in 2007, so it's been around for awhile. It was revived recently and just ended a run at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. As it happens, I live in Chicago and couldn't pass up the opportunity to see it. It's going abroad soon, so you may get a chance to see it too.

Britney Spears Musical ‘Once Upon a One More Time’ to Close on Broadway
Image
Once Upon a One More Time will play its final Broadway performance Sept. 3.

The musical, which features the songs of Britney Spears and a storyline about fairytale princesses in search of enlightenment, began preview performances at the Marquis Theatre on May 13 and opened June 22. Spears approved the musical and suggested its initial themes. She also signed an underlying rights agreement with the show, which was notably one of the first deals Spears signed since a judge terminated her conservatorship.

The closing notice comes as the musical failed to catch on with critics and with Broadway audiences, with the show reporting capacities in the 50 percent range for the past seven weeks. In the last publicly reported week of grosses, ended Aug. 13, the musical grossed its lowest eight-performance week yet, bringing in $512,008.

Producers James. L Nederlander and Hunter Arnold said there are currently plans underway for a national tour and international productions of the show,...

‘Once Upon a One More Time’ Musical Authorized by Britney Spears, License Negotiated Post-Conservatorship, Producers Say
Image
Once Upon A One More Time is one of the first Britney Spears-backed projects following the termination of her 13-year conservatorship.

Helmed by directors and choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid, with an original story by Jon Hartmere, the musical comedy is slated to open on June 22 at the Marquis Theater and will feature hits like “Oops I Did It Again,” “Lucky,” “Circus” and “Toxic.”

Ahead of its Broadway run, Once Upon a One More Time attempted a pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago beginning in 2019. Initially set for the James M. Nederlander Theatre in October, it would be delayed, and the opening rescheduled for April 2020. But in March, the pandemic shut down the theater industry, with the show’s producers eventually deciding to cancel the planned engagement altogether.

Once Upon a One More Time would make its eventual world premiere in December 2021 at Washington, D.C.’s Shakespeare Theatre Company — nearly...

We Need to Talk About the Guy Who Plays Sebastian in 'Cruel Intentions: The Musical'
Real talk: there are two weeks left to see Cruel Intentions: The Musical before it leaves the stage in New York City and You. Need. To. Go. I've already seen it three times and honestly, I would see it three more. It's literally just like the '90s movie with Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair — but with a jukebox musical flair, featuring all of your favorite hits from the '90s. Think "Genie in a Bottle," "Bye, Bye, Bye," and "I'm Just a Girl" fitting perfectly into the plotline all while Sebastian and Kathryn exude their step-sibling lust. But let's be real, the main reason you need to see it is because of the really f--king hot guy who plays Sebastian. Constantine Rousouli is a gift to the world and I don't understand how he is real. Like, just look at this.... A post shared...

Hear Sarah Michelle Gellar Reprise Her Cruel Intentions Role for Sly Musical Adaptation
Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions (1999)
Sarah Michelle Gellar is stepping back into the shoes of her cunning Cruel Intentions villain Kathryn Merteuil for one special cause: to tell audience members to turn off their cell phones.

The 40-year-old actress has recorded the pre-show announcement for Off-Broadway’s Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical Experience — the sly send-up of Roger Kumble’s 1999 teen classic that’s now playing at New York City’s (le) Poisson Rouge.

In the announcement, exclusive to listen to on People, Gellar doesn’t waste any time tapping into her character’s biting tongue. “It’s not that difficult, morons,” she tells...
