Gangs of London Season 2 Cast: Meet the New Characters
Joe Cole and Sope Dirisu in Gangs of London (2020)
Brutal British crime drama Gangs of London is back for a second series on Sky Atlantic and Now, with a release date of 20th October in the UK and 17th November in the US, and it’s looking as dark and gritty as ever.

When the explosive first series launched in April 2020, this story of the turbulent power struggles of London’s criminal underworld – centring on the Wallace family and various other international gangs – was an instant hit, at the time becoming Sky Atlantic’s second-biggest original drama launch behind Chernobyl. As dramas go it’s a thrilling powerhouse of a series, full of epic fight scenes and twisty narrative, and certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted gore-wise.

Now it’s back for a second series, fans will certainly be looking forward to seeing their unanswered questions resolved, as well as being introduced to new players in this savage power game.

‘The Crown’ Stars Olivia Colman, Lesley Manville Call For Gadget Levy to Fund U.K. Creative Industries – Global Bulletin
Image
Funding

“The Crown” stars Olivia Colman and Lesley Manville are among a host of British creative industries personalities calling for a levy on gadgets, the proceeds of which would to towards supporting the U.K. creative sector.

“As a coalition of creators and performers we support the Smart Fund, a new scheme that could help to bring cultural and economic renewal to the whole of the U.K. The fund could generate £250-£300 [$346-415] million a year for the creative sector, and boost a wider U.K. economic recovery, by placing a small levy on the sale of devices that enable people to store and download creative content, such as mobile phones, laptops and personal computers. This would provide a direct way for tech companies to invest in culture,” the artists wrote in a letter to U.K. newspaper The Times on Tuesday.

“In 2019 the creative industries contributed £111.7 billion to the...

We Are Monster (2014)
We Are Monster secures UK release
We Are Monster (2014)
Drama based on racially-motivated murder to get UK release.

True crime drama We Are Monster is to receive a limited theatrical release in the UK through Shear Entertainment on May 1 and will get a home entertainment release through Metrodome on May 11.

The film received its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival last June, where it played in competition for the Michael Powell Award.

Director Antony Petrou’s drama charts the true story of the murder of a young Asian inmate, Zahid Mubarak, by violent racist Robert Stewart at Feltham Young Offenders Institute in 2000.

Mubarek’s death was a national scandal and led to a House of Lords inquiry in 2006, which found a bewildering catalogue of both individual and systemic shortcomings at Feltham, naming and criticising 20 prison officials for failing to take action to prevent the death.

The film is written by and stars Leeshon Alexander with Aymen Hamdouchi co-starring.

Film Review: 'Snow in Paradise'
★★☆☆☆ The first film from editor Andrew Hulme has a promising visual edge but is saddled by a style-over-substance formula that harks away from character development and narrative discussion. Co-written by Martin Askew, on whose own story the film partly bases itself, Snow in Paradise (2014) is the tale of Dave, a low-life East London gangster who escapes into Islam for refuge from when he goes in too deep. We meet Dave (Frederick Schmidt) on a drug delivery in East London, alongside his best mate Tariq (Aymen Hamdouchi ). They don't look like typical gangsters - both slim, with Dave in a hipster shirt – especially swapping goods with burly men from a rival gang.

We Are Monster (2014)
We Are Monster, Leeshon Alexander
We Are Monster (2014)
Ahead of the world premiere in Edinburgh of We Are Monster, writer and star Leeshon Alexander talked to Screen about bringing a harrowing true story back into the public eye.

In February 2000, violent racist Robert Stewart was placed in a cell at Feltham Young Offenders Institute with Zahid Mubarek, an Asian teenager convicted of petty theft. Hours before Mubarek’s release, he was bludgeoned to death by Stewart.

It is a case that has largely been forgotten since 2006, when a public inquiry found the murder could have been prevented and named 14 prison officers – none of whom received disciplinary action.

Antony Petrou’s We Are Monster, which receives its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival tonight (June 20) and is nominated for the Michael Powell Award, is an attempt to bring the harrowing case back into the public consciousness and delivers a stylish, gripping prison drama that delves into the fractured mind of a killer.

The ‘monster...

Cannes 2014: 'Snow in Paradise' review
★★☆☆☆Showing in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at Cannes, film editor Andrew Hulme's directorial debut, Snow in Paradise (2014), is a brave attempt to inject new life into the tired genre of the London gangland thriller. However, the original twists and a certain visual flair struggle to overcome a sense of familiarity and implausibility about the whole affair. A young man, Dave (Frederick Schmidt), is an entry level gangster with a peculiarly random hatred of hipsters and the gentrification of his manor. He shouts at them through the glass of their coffee shops, telling his friend Tariq (Aymen Hamdouchi) that those people are "not really living - not like us". So what's this? Crime as the route to authenticity?...

Snow in Paradise (2014)
Review: 'Snow In Paradise' demolishes the myth of the glamorous UK gangster lifestyle
Snow in Paradise (2014)
Cannes -- Andrew Hulme is not a name that many film fans know, but you've more than likely seen his work. As an editor, he's worked on "The American," "Red Riding: 1974," 'Control," "Gangster No. 1," and "Lucky Number Slevin," among others, and he's also served as a second unit director on a few films. His directorial debut, "Snow In Paradise," made its appearance at Cannes today in the same timeslot that Ryan Gosling's "Lost River" played yesterday. It bummed me out to see that there were maybe a third as many people waiting to get into this one, and that was before I saw the movie. Afterwards, I'm doubly sorry, because it's a self-assured and sincere piece of work. Based loosely on the true life story of Martin Askew, this movie feels like a direct refutation of the romanticized myth of London's criminal underworld. How many films have you...

Blu-ray Review: My Brother the Devil
My Brother The Devil

Review by LondonFilmFan

Stars: James Floyd, Fady Elsayed, Saïd Taghmaoui, Aymen Hamdouchi, Ashley Bashy Thomas, Anthony Welsh, Arnold Oceng, Letitia Wright | Written and Directed by Sally El Hosaini

There certainly has been no shortage of gritty, British urban-centric films over the years, as much of Ben Drew’s cinematic career alone will attest to. As a result, it has become all too easy to wave a dismissive hand towards the next of, what seems to be, an endless supply, of gang-bangin’ English youfs. With many films that appear to celebrate the culture before sloppily condemning it during their closing minutes, it’s easily understandable if many viewers have vowed to never again subject themselves to a constant stream of bruvs, bluds, and cuzs during a night out at the movies. However, Sally El Hosaini’s debut feature, My Brother the Devil breaks the mould of the...

Atlantic Film Festival 2012: ‘My Brother the Devil’ a by-the-numbers affair
My Brother the Devil

Written by Sally El Hosaini, Aymen Hamdouchi

Directed by Sally El Hosaini

UK, 2012

My Brother the Devil tells the story of British-Egyptian teenager Mo, who has decided that he is finally old enough to join his older brother Rashid and his friends in their drug-peddling gang. But Rashid has a different idea of his brother’s future and tries his hardest to keep Mo away from the life that he himself has chosen. When their mutual friend Izzi is killed in a gang fight, the two clash more and more over how to avenge Izzi’s death. Tensions rise and begin escalating when Rashid starts hanging out with Sayyid, a mysterious friend of Izzi’s that has just moved to town.

Though the film’s director, Sally El Hosaini, surely tried to make a very personal and emotional film, what we are left with is a very run-of-the-mill indie gangster drama,...

Up There (2011)
Back in 2008, Zam Salim created a short film called Laid Off. A critical smash and a minor YouTube sensation, it told the tale of a man that had died but lived on in an earth-bound purgatory until he was worthy of going up to heaven. Here today is the first trailer for the feature length version, Up There, starring Game Of Thrones/Torchwood/The Dark Knight Rises' Burn Gorman as Martin, a recently deceased man who wants to get Up There after being knocked down by a car.Winner of the Panavision Spirit Award - the top prize at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2012 - and co-starring Kate O'Flynn (Happy-Go-Lucky), Aymen Hamdouchi (Green Zone), it also features the acting takents of Chris Waitt (A Complete History of My Sexual Failures), Jo Hartley (Dead Man's Shoes, Ill Manors), Iain de Caestecker (The Fades, Young James Herriott), and Kirsty Strain (Burnistoun,...

Screen picks for 2012: Tom Green, Domhnall Gleeson and Sally El Hosaini
Tales of Manchester noir, Hackney gangs and Russian love should light up our screens in 2012

Tom Green

Tom Green is on a mission to change the face of British TV drama. If the claim seems inflated, just look what the 32-year-old from Cambridge pulled off on his first directorial assignment two years ago. Green was just six weeks out of film school when he was asked to launch a supernatural comedy-drama series for E4. He directed three episodes of Misfits in its first season and three more in its second, by which time the series had won a Bafta and was averaging nearly 1.5 million viewers per episode.

Now, Green is taking charge of a new BBC1 five-part drama called The Fuse, due to air in May. It stars Christopher Eccleston as a corrupt Manchester politician given a chance to right the wrongs in his past, even as he tries to evade a murder charge.
