At a time when a remake of a classic horror film has recently come out on Blu-ray, seemingly looking to humanise an iconic monster of the screen, yet leaving many a horror fan feeling empty; horror fans understand that we don’t need to understand a killer to know why he does what he does, just give him a simple motivation and let him raise hell. This is why I was quite happy to find myself reviewing Nobody Gets Out Alive which ended up being an independent horror based on good old fashioned homage to slasher conventions deeply rooted in the seventies and eighties.

Oh the horror. Low budget movies. This one is titled Nobody Gets Out Alive (2013) written and directed by Jason Christopher. Will anyone get out alive? Yes. So much for titles. Jenn (Jen Dance) is just out of the hospital after having a nervous breakdown or something and her friend Michele (Chelsey Garner) organizes a trip out to the woods. Michele hopes to be proposed to by Mike (Shaun Paul Costello). They’re joined by a poor man’s Jay Mohr named Deron (David J. Bonner), a Zack Galifinakas impersonator Jared (Chris Ready), a Tara Reid hopeful called Angie (Nikki Bell), and a pointlessly aggressive jerk called Danny (Matthew Nadu). For some reason, the murderer, Mr. Isth (Brian Gallagher)—worst evil name ever—kills the people who run a convenience store. Anyway, the gang go out to the...

Nobody Gets Out Alive is writer/director Jason Christopher’s love letter to slasher films of the 70′s and 80′s, and the movie was released this week to DVD by Image Entertainment. I recently had the chance to catch up with Jason, and we talked about putting together his first feature, his love of directing over writing, and what’s next:

Why did you decide on Nobody Gets Out Alive as your first feature film and what movies inspired the story?

Jason Christopher: 90′s horror movies just didn’t do it for me because there was a completely different vibe from the 70′s and 80′s horror movies. Then Scream came out and horror movies started to pick up again. I think the last best slasher of the 80′s was Intruder in 1989.

I always wanted to write a script that was my thanks to the 70′s and 80′s slasher genre.

People really love slasher flicks. They never seem to go out of style and probably never will. The reason for this is simple: Slasher movies are stripped-down formula filmmaking, and when they're done right, they're extremely effective. But when they're not done right, well, you know.

Down the Road, writer/director Jason Christopher's recent entry in the slasher subgenre, is just such an exercise in stripped-down formula filmmaking. And though Christopher's film gets a lot right, it never quite overcomes what it gets wrong.

Christopher puts all the pieces in place and begins solidly by developing a believable new mythology, something not enough of these movies bother to do. Years ago, a young girl was killed by a drunk driver.

Down the Road is Jason Christopher's latest feature which features a crazed mad man in the local woods. Winner of "Best Feature" at Shockfest 2011, this film is making waves on the film festival circuit by playing with urban legends. This is also an indie film with a moderate budget that can be seen currently on the film festival circuit or on home entertainment formats in 2012. Indie horror filmmaker Jason Christopher dropped us a line last night to share with us the first of two teaser trailers for his upcoming slasher movie Down the Road and give us an update on the project.

Christopher told us, "This is the first of two official trailers coming out for the flick. I cut this one. It's a more serious overview of the flick that we're going to see. Straight to the point. The second trailer that is being cut by director/editor Matthew Lauyer will be more fun in the beginning, more fast-paced, and something really ‘in your face.’ This one explores just how messed up the world is that we created and gives you a good look at Clint Howard's character in the film.”

While director Jason Christopher is putting the final touches on his feature film debut, the indie horror flick Down the Road, we were able to snag a few official production stills for fans to dig on in the meantime.

Down the Road stars Shaun Paul Costello, Chris Ready, Chelsey Garner, David J. Bonner, Nikki Bell, Jen Dance, Matthew Nadu, and the legendary Clint Howard. "The film pays homage to films such as Friday the 13th and Halloween," says producer Deven Lobascio.

Down the Road follows a group of college students who end up getting more than they bargained for when they head to the woods for a little downtime only to encounter a revenge-seeking madman hellbent on teaching them why it’s never a good idea to hang out in the woods.

For up-and-coming genre writer/director Jason Christopher, horror has been a way of life for him for as long as he can remember. “I grew up watching horror movies ever since I was a little kid because I would get obsessed with the cover art on the VHS boxes."

Christopher continues, "The art on old-school horror boxes used to be so badass so that’s what got me hooked. I loved the eye candy and my love for horror grew from there. I had always wanted to do a horror movie and had always kept outlines for different ideas but nothing came of it. It wasn’t until my dad passed away that I really wanted to pen one to get out my anger and whatever and that’s how Down the Road started off.”

Just yesterday I was talking about why it's wise to stay out of the fucking woods if you don't belong there, but I guess we should be thankful for those unfortunate dolts who think they're heading there for a good time only to become meat for the beast. Hey, it makes for good movie watching!

The latest film to hit our radar is Jason Christopher's terror tale Down the Road starring Shaun Paul Costello, Chris Ready, Chelsey Garner, David J. Bonner, Nikki Bell, Jen Dance, Matthew Nadu, and the great Clint Howard.

"The film pays homage to films such as Friday the 13th and Halloween." says producer Deven Lobascio. To further add to this new slasher's pedigree, Lobascio goes on to tell us that the script for the film was revised and edited by writer Victor Brooke Miller, who penned the original Friday the 13th.
