With The Knife, Nnamdi Asomugha turns a night of domestic crisis into a taut moral thriller about the slipperiness of truth. Hailing from Fifth Season, ‘The Savant’ is executive produced by Chastain and Kelly Carmichael for Freckle Films, Emmy Award winner Alan Poul, Emmy Award nominee Melissa James Gibson, and six-time Emmy Award winner and two-time DGA winner Matthew Heineman. David Levine and Garrett Kemble serve as executive producers for Anonymous Content.

It’s only taken two years, but Apple TV+ has finally confirmed the release date for its new thriller starring Jessica Chastain. The Savant has a fall release date, and now we have a first-look at the series.

The series was originally ordered back in March 2023. Of course, that same year was when the dual strikes hit in the summer, leading to a lot of projects being put on hold. Some of those projects ended up canceled, but not The Savant, which will now arrive in the fall.

The Savant scores a strong September release date

Apple TV+ has set the premiere date for The Savant as Friday, Sept. 26, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The first two episodes will drop at once, and then the rest of the season will be released weekly on Fridays, which is standard for Apple TV+. The finale will air on Friday, Nov. 7.

Apple posted two new images from The Savant to Instagram on July 23, 2025, and revealed that the show will premiere on the streamer on Sept. 26, 2025. The Instagram post was accompanied by the caption "The system can’t stop what it doesn’t see coming. Jessica Chastain is The Savant - September 26 on Apple TV+.”

The San Quentin Film Festival — which, last year, became the first-ever film festival held inside of a prison — has set the industry jury for its second annual event, including Vanessa Williams, Esai Morales, Jesse Williams, Celine Song and more.

These jurors will judge narrative and documentary short films from currently and formerly incarcerated filmmakers as well the pitch competitions for best screenplay and best documentary from currently incarcerated writers.

This year’s jury also features two formerly incarcerated people: actor and writer Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, who starred in 2024’s “Sing Sing,” as well as actor, author and poet Richard Cabral, best known for “Mayans M.C.” and “American Crime.”

Other notable jurors include Kyra Sedgwick and Claudia Weill. Last year’s industry jury included Jeffrey Wright, Billy Crudup, Mary-Louise Parker and more.

The 47-year-old actress was presented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday (December 2) in Hollywood, Calif.

Kerry had the support of husband Nnamdi Asomugha, her parents Valerie & Earl, Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes, and longtime friend and collaborator Tyler Perry.

She also had the support of her The Six Triple Eight co-stars Kylie Jefferson, Milauna Jackson, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, and Shanice Shantay.

During the event, Kerry shared the advice she would give to her younger self.

“I would tell her to try to enjoy the journey and to trust that everything’s going to be okay in the end,” Kerry told Extra. “I think sometimes we get so stressed out about whether life is going to unfold in a way that we want it to, but just to, like, take a deep breath and be grateful for where you are in each moment.

Although Kerry Washington finds the fact that she’s receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame “surreal,” her father, Earl Washington, thinks she should’ve gotten a star a lot sooner.

“Anytime he would hear that somebody was getting one, he was like, ‘Why don’t you have one?’” Washington tells Variety, laughing as she recounts their conversations. “I was like, ‘I don’t know, Dad. I don’t make those decisions.’ So I feel like he’s manifested this moment. I’m excited that I get to share it with him.”

Washington’s father is right. She could’ve been honored anytime in her nearly 25-year career — with a resume highlighted by standout turns in films like “Save the Last Dance,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “She Hate Me” and “Ray,” all before she landed the role of D.C. fixer Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal.

Rapper and singer René Pérez Jogger, also known as Residente, leads the cast of In the Summers, top prize winner at the Deauville American Film Festival Photo: Deauville American Film Festival The Jury of the 50th edition of the Deauville American film festival, presided over by Benoît Magimel, with Ludivine Sagnier, Emilie Dequenne, Agathe Riedinger, Damien Bonnard, Lou Lampros and Martin Bourboulon have awarded the Festival’s top prize to In The Summers, by Colombian American writer-director Alessandra Lacorazza for her debut feature.

Already noted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year, the film relates the story a broken family dynamic through the eyes of two young girls during their formative years. René Pérez Joglar (also known by his rapper/singer stage name Residente) leads the cast.

The honours were bestowed at the Festival’s closing ceremony last night.

Grand Prix: In The Summers...

Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams and Sebastian Stan have joined the roster of Hollywood stars set to attend the 50th edition of France’s Deauville American Film Festival.

The festival announced Thursday that it would fete Portman and Williams with its Deauville Talent Award at the upcoming edition (running from September 6 to 15) in the presence of the stars.

Stan is also set to attend receive its Nouvel Hollywood award in the wake of recent performances in The Apprentice and A Different Man, which will screen at the festival as part of its Premieres line-up.

He joins Daisy Ridley, whose presence in Deauville for same award was announced last week. Previous recipients of the award feting rising Hollywood talents include Robert Pattinson, Ryan Gosling and Emilia Clarke.

In other additions to the program, Deauville also revealed that it would be welcoming back Cannes 2024 Palme d’Or winner Sean Baker, who has a long history with the festival.

Deauville American Film Festival has unveiled the 14 US features for its 50th anniversary edition running September 6-15 in the Normandy seaside town.

They include Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio’s 2024 Sundance prize-winner In The Summers, Cannes-premiering titles including Roberto Minervini’s The Damned and Tyler Taormina’s Christmas Eve At Miller’s Point, and Christy Hall’s taxi drama Daddio.

Eight of the films are debut features, among them David Fortune’s Color Book which world-premiered at Tribeca and Brandt Andersen’s The Strangers’ Case which made its debut at Berlin.

The Knife is a visceral viewing experience, keeping us on edge with intense suspense and a poignant conclusion. A Black family has recently moved into a new home in a not-so-safe neighborhood, but a routine evening is disrupted by an intruder. Chris goes down to the kitchen to find the source of the noise. In his hand is a knife. Though he confronts the stranger, what exactly transpired between them is not shown onscreen. And so The Knife begins on an anxious, tense note that it delicately continues to escalate until the final moment, leaving us on edge throughout a swift, stress-inducing 82 minutes.

Exclusive: Manny Jacinto (The Good Place) is the latest thesp in talks to join Disney’s long-awaited sequel, Freaky Friday 2, sources tell Deadline.

Disney declined comment.

Details as to Jacinto’s role are under wraps, as is the plot of the film, which will shoot this summer in Los Angeles. As previously reported, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are expected to return for their respective roles as body-swapping mother Tess and daughter Anna, with Julia Butters also in talks for a role.

Nisha Ganatra (Late Night) will direct from a script by Jordan Weiss, with the original film’s Andrew Gunn to produce alongside Kristin Burr. Whether the film will be for theaters or streaming isn’t yet clear.

Griffin in Summer won the Founders Award for best U.S. narrative feature as well as two additional awards: special jury mention for new narrative director for Nicholas Colia and best screenplay in a U.S. narrative feature, which also went to Colia.

Meanwhile, Bikechess won Best International Narrative Feature, and Hacking Hate won Best Documentary Feature. Don’t You Let Me Go won the 12th annual Nora Ephron Award, and Come Closer and Witches topped the first Viewpoints Competition.

Additionally, Nnamdi Asomugha‘s The Knife won two awards: best cinematography in a U.S. narrative feature (Alejandro Mejia) and the best new narrative director award for Asomugha.

Some Rain Must Fall also won two awards.

Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature: Griffin in Summer, director Nicholas Colia

Nicholas Colia’s Griffin in Summer swept the narrative features award categories at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, nabbing honors for best U.S. film and screenplay, as well as a special jury mention for new narrative director.

Colia’s feature debut stars Everett Blunck as an aspiring 14-year-old playwright who falls hard for his mother’s handyman and struggling performance artist, played by Owen Teague. The jury mentioned in its notes Thursday that the film “straddled the very thin line between heartwarming, tragic, hilarious and awkward” and that it “fills a void in the marketplace for films that touch on sophisticated themes while remaining family friendly. Never pandering, always fresh, full of relatable universal experiences while being incredibly specific and nuanced.”

Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux won for Best Performance in a U.S. Narrative Feature for Jazzy, by Morrisa Maltz, a follow-up to her 2023 The Unknown Country starring Lily Gladstone. The Killers...

Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and David Tennant have joined the cast of Netflix and Amblin Entertainment’s “The Thursday Murder Club,” based on Richard Osman’s novel of the same name.

According to an official logline, the series follows, “a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught in a real case. The four members of the club are played by Helen Mirren (ex-spy Elizabeth), Sir Ben Kingsley (ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim) Pierce Brosnan (former union activist Ron) and Celia Imrie (ex-nurse Joyce).”

Chris Columbus serves as writer, director and producer with Jennifer Todd. Holly Bario, Jeb Brody, Eleanor Columbus and Jo Burn executive produce.

The Duplasses are starting miniature with their first full-fledged family affair on all sides of the camera: the short film “Oh, Christmas Tree,” a bittersweet 10-minute ode to a father and daughter reliving their favorite holiday traditions.

It’s written by Mark Duplass, directed by his wife Katie Aselton (“Mack and Rita“), and stars their 16-year-old daughter Ora opposite her dad in roles that aren’t exactly autobiographical despite the onscreen, lived-in rapport. Here, the mother is dead, and the daughter, Claire, is now the one doing the parenting as her father grapples with mental health struggles. The short, currently seeking buyers out of Tribeca Festival, packs a lot into its brief running time, and for this trio, it also marks Ora’s entry into filmmaking as she readies to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

Jessica Chastain always manages to turn heads with her fashion choices. I find her style bold and daring; for me, she’s a total red carpet icon. She constantly impresses me with her ability to pull off unique looks that perfectly flatter her figure.

That said, I am not as blown away by her latest outfit. It isn’t a bad look by any means. Her look is polished and chic. However, it doesn’t quite have the same wow factor I’m used to seeing from her.

A palpable tension permeates Nnamdi Asomugha’s unsettling feature directorial debut The Knife. It’s evident from the opening sequence, in which Chris (Asomugha), a young Black father, returns to his family after a long day of work. As he slinks into his daughters’ bedroom to say goodnight, the tension holds. It’s still there when he snuggles next to his wife, Alex (How to Get Away With Murder and Lessons in Chemistry star Aja Naomi King), in bed.

The first disturbances — a turning knob, the creak of a door — ease some of the strain. Chris, an intermittent insomniac, wakes from his slumber, grabs a pocket knife and heads downstairs to investigate the noise. The Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen and new play Stereophonic, about a fictional band in the 1970s, led the Tony nominations with 13 nominations each.

The Outsiders, a musical based on the 1967 S.E. Hinton book, followed with 12 nominations and the revival of Cabaret, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin, followed with nine nods.

With its 13 noms, Stereophonic set a record for the most Tony nominations for a play, surpassing previous record holder Slave Play’s 12 noms in 2020.

Jordana Spiro (Ozark), Trinity Lee Shirley (Da Bottomz), newcomer Toussaint Francois Battiste (Waiting for Godot), Cole Doman (Mutt), Hannah Gross (The Adults), David Wilson Barnes (George & Tammy), Michael Mosley (The Sinner) and Dagmara Dominczyk (Succession) join previously announced Chastain, Nnamdi Asomugha and James Badge Dale, who recurs.

Chastain, who also executive produces, plays a top-secret investigator known as the Savant, who infiltrates online hate groups to take down the most violent men in the country. Asomugha plays her husband.

Inspired by a true story published by Cosmopolitan, the storyline and additional character details are being kept under wraps.
