Netflix Cancels Major Sandman Universe Series After 1 Season

Per Variety, Netflix has officially chosen to cancel Dead Boy Detectives, putting the show onto the pile of previously-axed titles that fans say ended way too soon on the streaming platform.

Dead Boy Detectives Star Addresses The Sandman's Shared Universe
Image
Dead Boy Detectives has arrived on Netflix, and it directly links to The Sandman with multiple characters making cameos. With that said, Dead Boy Detectives is also a series that aims to stand on its own.

In a recent interview with Cbr's Kevin Polowy, series star George Rexstrew, who plays Edwin Payne, comments on the show's connections to The Sandman. While Dead Boy Detectives hasn't gotten a renewal order at this time, that could potentially happen, and there's also a second season of The Sandman on the way. Rexstrew was asked about how much the two shows will ultimately line up, and the actor noted how the shared universe is clear, though both The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives can still coexist as separate entities.

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ Still Has 1 Major Easter Egg No One Spotted
Image
“Dead Boy Detectives” premiered on Netflix April 25 and brought with it not just a gorgeously stylized supernatural mystery and a villain for the ages in evil (but beautiful!) witch Esther, but a cleverly constructed world that was easy to lose oneself in. Set mostly in the Pacific Northwest, Season 1 followed the titular ghosts, Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri), their living but amnesiac clairvoyant friend Crystal (Kassius Nelson), and a bevy of new friends, enemies, and one very unexpected detour into Hell. By season’s end, some mysteries had been solved, and others left dangling appetizingly. The biggest one of all, though, remains intact: What will Season 2 bring?

Netflix has not yet announced if “Dead Boy Detectives” will score a Season 2, but that doesn’t mean executive producers Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz haven’t spent time thinking about it. In fact, the reception to Season 1 has only fueled more creative decisions.

Warning: Significant spoilers for Dead Boy Detectives season 1 are ahead.

The final shot of Dead Boy Detectives season 1 has viewers speculating on the identity of the hooded figure, hinting at a major storyline for season 2. Dead Boy Detectives Sprites Caitlin Reilly and Max Jenkins Interview
Image
First things first: The attention-seeking creatures that inhabit Niko (Yuyu Kitamura) in Dead Boy Detectives have names, thank you very much — Litty (Caitlin Reilly) and Kingham (Max Jenkins). So if you even think about calling them Sprite 1 and Sprite 2, they’ll find it really offensive and roast you into oblivion. Actually, they’ll do that anyway.

We meet the 2-inch-tall, foul-mouthed Sprites in Episode 2, “The Case of the Dandelion Shrine,” when the Dead Boy Detectives help remove the paranormal parasites from Niko’s body and trap them in an enchanted jar. From their fishbowl prison, the Sprites lovingly taunt Niko and her friends for the rest of the season. (Particularly memorable digs include Kingham comparing Niko’s face to “roadkill.”) Think of them as the series’ savage Greek chorus, commenting on the goings-on of the characters and cases.

‘Dead Boy Detectives’ HBO Max Series Adds Caitlin Reilly, Max Jenkins (Exclusive)
Image
The “Dead Boy Detectives” show at HBO Max has added Caitlin Reilly and Max Jenkins to its cast in recurring roles, Variety has learned exclusively.

The eight-episode series was ordered at HBO Max back in April. It is based on the DC comics of the same name as well as “The Sandman,” from characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner.

As all you TV academy members are aware, we’re currently in the midst of Emmy voting, which ends June 24. If you’re struggling to fill out your Best Comedy Actress ballots, I highly encourage you to consider Netflix’s dark comedy contender “Dead to Me,” which features a career-best performance by Christina Applegate.

Open relationships, throuples, polyamory — 21st century sexual configurations have not always received the most nuanced cinematic renderings. Few filmmakers have truly interrogated what polyamory looks like in real life without resorting to cheap thrills and even cheaper jokes. Which is what makes “Lavender,” an elegantly crafted short film starring “Ugly Betty” star Michael Urie, such a revelation. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was quickly nabbed by Fox Searchlight’s brand new short film distribution arm and became a Vimeo Staff Pick premiere as of today.

“Lavender” is the second narrative short from gay filmmaker Matthew Puccini, who wrote and directed the short. His first film, “The Mess He Made,” starred Max Jenkins (“High Maintenance”) as a man waiting for the results of an HIV test. “Lavender” is just as plaintive in tone, though its themes are slightly lighter. The film centers around a young man...

High Maintenance (2012)
‘High Maintenance’ Star Max Jenkins Sheds the Laughs in Poignant Short Film About Waiting for an HIV Test — Watch
High Maintenance (2012)
“I love doing stuff that’s not overtly comedy, because I think life is really funny, especially in intensely panicked moments,” Max Jenkins told IndieWire in a recent interview. After making a splash in comedic television roles in HBO’s “High Maintenance” and NBC’s short-lived “The Mysteries of Laura,” the actor took a turn for the dramatic in “The Mess He Made,” a poignant short film about a man awaiting the results of an HIV test. Directed and written by Matthew Puccini, the film is a beautifully restrained representation of an emotionally fraught yet all too common experience for many gay men.

“I knew what I wanted to do as soon as I read the script,” said Jenkins. “It’s easy with a good script. You don’t really have to prepare too much. In this case…it was all there.

‘High Maintenance’ Creators Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld On Their Unique Writing And Audition Process
High Maintenance (2012)
The best way to get a TV deal for your web series? Don’t try. At least, according to Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld that works, and they would know.

Sinclair and Blichfeld are the creators of “High Maintenance,” a brilliantly crafted, wholly original comedy that began its six-episode run on HBO last month. Sinclair also appears in the series, playing a weed delivery guy referred to simply as “the Guy,” who bikes to the homes of a parade of eccentric New Yorkers. The Guy has a kind of omniscient passport into the inner lives of the lonely, yearning, lost and downright looney people every New Yorker will recognize; if not from the subway, then from the mirror.

O Captain! My Captain! Deadline is reporting that Netflix has identified Toby Stephens to helm the ship and lead the Robinsons as dad John Robinson in the reboot of Lost in Space. Stephens will be joined on the intergalactic tour by Max Jenkins as Will Robinson, the family’s youngest child. Taylor Russell, best known for her work on Falling Skies, has been previously announced to star as Judy Robinson, the eldest daughter. Stephens is no stranger to heading a vessel. He’s spent four seasons as Captain Flint on the Emmy-winning pirate series Black Sails. Lost in Space is slated to debut in 2018. No word yet on who they plan to cast as Dr. Smith or that Hopeless Heap of Tainted Tin robot.

The Show | Blindspot

The Episode | “In Night So Ransomed Rogue” (Sept. 14, 2016)

The Performance | As far as memorable entrances go, crawling out of a duffel bag in the heart of New York City is a tough act to follow.

And yet, as soon as Blindspot‘s sophomore premiere began Wednesday night, Alexander had us as captivated as we were the moment we first laid eyes on her inked Jane Doe last fall — and she didn’t let up one bit in the hour that followed.

From scene to scene, moment to moment, Alexander showed us a myriad of different Janes,...

High Maintenance: HBO's Potent New Comedy Delivers More Than Laughs
High Maintenance (2012)
With a runtime of 33 minutes, HBO’s High Maintenance premiere is roughly four times longer than any of the episodes in the web series from which it spawned — and we’re happy to report that it’s time well spent.

VideosHBO’s Westworld: New Trailer Promises Sex, Guns… and Plenty of Robots

As always, the...
