A new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here) recently made its way out into the world (JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols gave it a 4/10 “dumpster fire” review that can be read at This Link). Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played heroine Julie James in the first two films, and Freddie Prinze Jr., who was Julie’s boyfriend Ray Bronson in those films, reprise their roles – and they’re facing off with a new “Fisherman” killer that’s stalking a whole new cast. There was a lot of chatter and excitement about Hewitt reprising the role of Julie James – but during an interview with Tommy Didario, she revealed that she didn’t end up doing everything the filmmakers had in mind for her, as there were chase and fight scenes that went unfilmed!

Although he didn’t make the final cut of I Know What You Did Last Summer, perhaps Nicholas Alexander Chavez will live to see another sequel.
Following his and Lola Tung‘s scene getting cut from writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson‘s requel to the 1997 teen slasher film, the Emmy winner shared his reaction and whether he’d return for a future installment.
“I mean, Jennifer is a good friend,” he told Us Weekly. “She’s really, really cool people, and, you know, me and Lola had a really, really good time. But, like, look — that’s filmmaking.”
Chavez added, “All I could think about was my time that I spent in Australia, which was hanging out with kangaroos, going on hot air balloon adventures over the plains at sunrise, going cherry picking with my girlfriend. That’s actually all I remember when I think about that movie.”

Zach Cregger’s Weapons is taking the world by storm, as evident in the horror film’s rave reviews, and it looks like its success has been rubbing off on the Final Destination franchise. According to FlixPatrol, five out of six installments of the famed horror title made it to HBO’s Top 10 Movies dated August 7th.
Final Destination Bloodlines tops the rank, which is also the latest in the saga, followed closely by the classic Final Destination (2000), then Final Destination 2 (2003) in the 5th spot, Final Destination 5 (2011) on the 8th, and Final Destination 3 (2006) on the 9th.
David R. Ellis’ The Final Destination (2009) went down the list; it is also the lowest-rated movie in the franchise. Nonetheless, the horror saga—which earned $942 million worldwide—seems to be enjoying a new wave of enthusiasm from the audience.

With more than 15 years and 30 movies behind it, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still doing alright. Across this cavalcade of almost three dozen movies are a wide variety of iconic superheroes, grand stories, impressive visual tapestries, and the occasional entry that manages to be just “not bad.” We all have our rankings for the very best and the very worst of the Marvel series, but now JoBlo officially has the MCU movies ranked from Iron Man to the newly released The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Here we go, from least to best:
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s slasher legacy sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer is still in the top 10 at the domestic box office in its third week of release, with the film slashing into another couple million dollars this past weekend. At this time, the film’s domestic total is now $29.2 million, with the current worldwide total sitting at $58,668,554.
With I Know What You Did Last Summer likely to slice and dice $60 million when all is said and done, Sony’s sequel is officially profitable given the film’s low $18 million budget. Very few horror movies have been able to pass $60 million so far this year, with only The Monkey, 28 Years Later, Final Destination Bloodlines, and Sinners hitting that high mark.
At the same time, this will end up being the lowest grossing theatrical release for the franchise to date. Unadjusted for inflation, the original I Know What You Did Last Summer...

What are you waiting for, huh? If you're planning to watch the original I Know What You Did Last Summer on Netflix, you'd better hurry. The 1997 horror hit is leaving the streamer at the end of the month. You have until July 31 to hook this one on the streamer before it moves to different waters.
Part of the post-Scream slasher revival of the late 1990s, I Know What You Did Last Summer was an adaptation of the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan; Duncan would go on to decry the film's gore and violence. It was adapted by Scream scribe Kevin Williamson, and directed by Jim Gillespie (D-Tox). Critics were considerably less impressed with the film than they were with Scream, handing it a 47% Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, the film proved that audiences were still hungry for horror, and grossed $125 million Usd at the box office on a paltry $17 million budget,...

Immediately after I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters on July 18, there was one thing on the mind of every fan: A sequel. For summer blockbusters, that's always the hope from fans, that the movie will make enough money necessary to confirm that a sequel will be confirmed. This particular horror movie was simply begging to continue with another installment.
As of this writing, it's been less than two weeks since the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot sequel hit the big screen, and the movie has brought in a mild but still impressive worldwide gross of $46 million (and counting) against its $18 million budget. I Know What You Did Last Summer Box Office: Sony’s Horror Reboot Struggles To Match Franchise Hype (Photo Credit – Instagram)
I Know What You Did Last Summer was supposed to be Sony’s next horror revival, but it did not play out that way. Sony hoped to follow in the footsteps of recent reboots like Scream and Final Destination Bloodlines and tried to cash in on nostalgia again, but that seems to have failed miserably.

While other franchises found fresh energy and strong box office numbers, I Know What You Did Last Summer landed with a thud. The new movie barely made a ripple, pulling in just $45 million globally as per Box Office Mojo, even though it managed to recover its modest $18 million budget.

James Gunn and DC Studios believed they were ushering in the "Summer of Superman," but then the Marvel Cinematic Universe still hadn’t played its best hand in 2025. True, The Fantastic Four: First Steps initially got the best of the David Corenswet-led Superman movie when the latest entry in the MCU hit theaters en route to making $24.4 million during its Thursday night previews. And, yes, that figure was slightly better than the $22.5 million Superman accumulated during its own early screenings. However, that tiny victory was short-lived because The Fantastic Four surprisingly underperformed compared to the new Man of Steel’s opening-weekend debut of $125 million. After all the estimates rolled in, it turned out that the new F4 brought home a not-so-Galactus-sized $118 million domestically at the box office, and that is a reason for die-hard Superman fans to celebrate. However, there’s no way to declare which of the two...

Sony was probably hoping for its I Know What You Did Last Summerreboot to generate the sort of buzz that Paramount’s Scream and Warner Bros.’ Final Destination Bloodlines were able to in recent years. Both films reinvigorated their respective franchises with positive reviews and an excellent box office performance. I Know What You Did Last Summer, on the other hand, has fallen short on both accounts. Sony probably overestimated the franchise’s value, as it struggles to produce IP-driven movies that have nothing to do with Spider-Man.
Recently, the studio released the video game adaptation Until Dawn, which concluded its run with just over $50 million. A few weeks later, Karate Kid: Legends grossed a little over $100 million worldwide. Neither result is good enough to sustain a studio of Sony’s size, and with its Marvel-style shared universe of superhero movies having imploded, it has no choice but to rely...

In the era of legacy sequels, it was only a matter of time before 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer was also revived for the modern-day. The summer of horror continued this month with the return of I Know What You Did Last Summer. After a 27-year theatrical hiatus, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddy Prinze Jr.) are once again being stalked by the dreaded Fisherman Killer. While the reviews for this fourth installment weren't the best and the box office hasn't been glowing, slasher fans can already pre-order the legacy sequel’s killer 4K steelbook.
The upcoming 4K/Blu-ray/Digital combo-pack steelbook will feature Madelyn Cline’s Danica Richards listening to her meditations while in the bathtub with her blood-red bath bomb on the front cover. This is just like one of the kill sequences in the film. The back cover features an image of the Fisherman Killer’s deadly hook, while the inside art has a photo of the new ensemble cast next to the message “You're Next”. It's been a tough year so far for studio horror films, with the odd exception, of course. Only a few weeks after Sony's 28 Years Later appeared to defy trends and deliver a respectable haul at the box office, the studio's I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel found itself being overwhelmed by competition. The slasher film debuted this past week, and underperformed with just under $15 million in its opening frame at the domestic box office. Audiences were clearly more interested in watching the holdover hits Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, and F1. However, despite its lukewarm debut, I Know What You Did Last Summer has now overtaken one of last year's surprise horror hits, the low-budget supernatural chiller Immaculate.
Starring Sydney Sweeney as a nun who moves to Italy and discovers horrific secrets at her convent, Immaculateconcluded its box office run with $35 million worldwide and $15 million domestically.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Worldwide Box Office: Update After 4 Days ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
I Know What You Did Last Summer had an underwhelming start this weekend, its opening weekend. But it has achieved an interesting feat regarding its return on investment: It has earned more than half of its breakeven number worldwide in just four days. Keep scrolling for the deets.
The film debuted at #3 in the domestic box office chart, and it’s not its fault as Hollywood tentpole releases are hogging all the limelight. It is a reboot of the Og classic, which was released in 1997. The film maintains a stronghold at the 3rd rank and is expected to continue until Thursday. On Friday, The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released, pushing it further down in the list. The Big 3 – Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps will dominate the box office.

Jennifer Love Hewitt has a brilliant idea, and we’re hoping the 9-1-1 creative team listens to it. On the heels of opening weekend for Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, which sees Hewitt reprise the role of Julie James after nearly three decades since originating it, the actress grabbed a seat opposite Tommy Didario on his I’ve Never Said This Before podcast. It was there that she came up with and spitballed her plans for a one-of-a-kind event that would see 9-1-1 pay homage to the iconic slasher franchise.
During the pair’s chat, the star of the beloved ABC procedural was musing about what might happen to her character — 911 dispatcher Maddie Han — in upcoming episodes when she struck gold with a killer idea:
“What if I get a call at the 911 call center from a girl being chased by a fisherman?...

There’s a new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here) in theatres now (JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols gave it a 4/10 “dumpster fire” review that can be read at This Link). The movie features a twist that has been upsetting a lot of fans of the original movies, though, and in an interview with Variety, Hewitt took the opportunity to defend that twist. So we’re going to have to dig into Spoiler territory before we get to her defense.

Even though some fans may be disappointed that Julie and Ray are no longer together in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie, Freddie Prinze Jr. agrees that the characters should be divorced. While both Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt appear in the new slasher film, it primarily follows a new group of characters who are hunted by the Fishermen.

I cannot tell you."Even so, the director teased she'd like Brandy Norwood's Karla – who appeared in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer as Julie James' (Jennifer Love Hewitt) roommate – to have a part in a potential follow-up after she cameoed in the mid-credits scene of I Know What You Did Last Summer.Robinson said: "I wanted Brandy in this film. The director of the latest I Know What You Did Last Summer movie knows about Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s chemistry in the new film.
Sony’s feature reboot from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson hit theaters over the weekend, landing in third place at the domestic box office with $12.7 million. Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon round out the cast for the latest entry in the slasher franchise that kicked off with the original 1997 film of the same name.
A social media user’s post on Saturday asked fellow fans whether they thought Hewitt and Prinze — who reprise their roles from the original movie and its sequel — “filmed their scenes together” in the 2025 installment. “People are starting to notice the ‘cuts and separate shots,'” the post continued.
Robinson was quick to clear up any confusion surrounding the pair’s scenes.

Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.
The new I Know What You Did Last Summer was as fulfilling of a legacy sequel as they come. It’s difficult to blend legacy with something completely new, but filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and her co-scribe, Sam Lansky, did so almost completely seamlessly, delivering a worthy follow-up to the two canon films of the late ‘90s. For years, fans of franchises like Halloween and Scream have been calling for a huge upheaval that would see one of the primary protagonists switch teams and go to bat for the villains. While — so far — other film series haven’t fully gone there, I Know What You Did Last Summer took that leap of faith and turned Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Og character, Ray Bronson, into a rain-slicker-wearing, hook-wielding killer. The creative decision has fans and critics divided,...

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s return to I Know What You Did Last Summer came down to a deep “love” of the horror franchise. The 45-year-old actress is reprising her role as Julie James nearly 30 years after first appearing in the iconic teen slasher, and has now credited the new film’s creative team with bringing the franchise back with a lot of heart. She told Variety of director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Sam Lansky: “What was very apparent from the word ‘Go’ is how much both of them loved the original movie.“I feel like, if you’re going to go back and make something new but pay homage to an original, you have to love it. You have to understand it. “So, I was just blown away and it meant a lot to me.”The new instalment, set for release in 2025, follows a fresh group of teenagers in Southport,...

One of the most memorable aspects of the 1997 “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is its location, a North Carolina fishing town called Southport where the vengeful killer tries to pick off cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar one by one. Vividly conceived by production designer Gary Wissner, Southport provided a unique and richly detailed environment for the original movie’s action, and its spirit remained central to the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” even though most of that movie moved the horror to an island in the Bahamas.
For the latest installment in the franchise — also titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer” — co-writer and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson wanted to pay tribute to Southport’s role in the story while taking it in new directions. “The bedrock to this story is the gentrification of Southport,...

Another week, another disappointing result for a horror sequel at the 2025 summer box office. Blumhouse and Universal Pictures recently had to suffer the misfire that was "M3GAN 2.0," which isn't going to make a third of what the original "M3GAN" did. But while it's not nearly as bad in the early going for Sony Pictures, the studio's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" legacy sequel opened in theaters over the weekend and, sad to say, it fell pretty far short of expectations as well.
"I Know What You Did Last Summer" opened to an estimated $13 million domestically over the weekend, coupled with $11.6 million overseas. That gives it a $24.6 million global start against a reported $18 million budget. That's by no means a disaster but considering that pre-release estimates had "Last Summer" taking in between $16 and $25 million in North America, that's a disappointment. The re-introduction of the once-popular '90s slasher...

If you wait long enough, everything comes back around. Still, so much time has passed since the 1998 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer, fans might not know what they did last weekend, let alone 27 years ago.
But then six _Scream_s can’t be wrong, so back we go to Southport, North Carolina, for this glossy legacy sequel, which introduces likeable Ava (Chase Sui Wonders), ditzy Danica (Madelyn Cline), jock Teddy (Tyriq Withers), mopey Milo (Jonah Hauer-King) and odd-one-out Stevie (Sarah Pidgeon), whose defining characteristic is that she’s poor. A year after accidentally killing someone – on Reaper’s Curve, no less – they start receiving notes saying, “I know what you did last summer”, then getting picked off one by one.
What’s different this time? A fresh, largely female crew, headed by director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) and co-writer Leah McKendrick (Mfa). And the return of...

Well I Know What You Did Last Summer fans, she got us. And, while we’d usually be upset to have been gotten during the movie’s premiere weekend, we have nothing but the utmost gratitude and respect for director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who managed to keep the most hoped-for cameo under wraps. After literal months of telling journalists that Sarah Michelle Gellar would not be coming back from the dead to reprise her role as Helen Shivers from the original 1997 movie of the same name, the helmer and co-writer not only found a way to do it, but perfectly fit it into the storyline. The beloved Croaker Queen rose from the dead in a fully tasteful way during a dream sequence during which Madelyn Cline’s Danica Richards found herself communing with her fellow beauty queen and learning a thing or two about outrunning the past.

The director of the I Know What You Did Last Summerreboot explains why one original cast member did not appear. The slasher horror franchise is back this year, as a new group of friends are stalked by a hooked-handed killer who knows about a dark secret from their past. This installment is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
The cast of this horror reboot is full of a lot of new faces. This includes Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King. However, the 2025 I Know What You Did Last Summer cast also includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Jennifer Love Hewitt returning to their lead roles.
Now, Robinson explains to People why Ryan Phillippe did not return in I Know What You Did Last Summer. The writer-director explained that including Phillippe's character "just got to be too much," so Barry Cox was relegated to a shoutout.

“Nostalgia is overrated.”
Warning: This feature has Heavy Spoilers for 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Pop culture has reached a dangerous inflection point where everything old is new again. It’s no longer enough to franchise out IP and reboot beloved classics, but the past decade has been rich in legacy sequels that are largely dependent on the power of nostalgia. There are so many hollow legacy sequels that coast on inauthentic sentimentality that cinema has reached a point where these franchise extensions feel inevitable, rather than exciting. Legacy horror sequels like Exorcist: Believer, Halloween Ends, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) hit diminishing returns. A project like a new I Know What You Did Last Summer almost seems set up to fail by this metric, yet Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s movie becomes a powerful commentary on the benefits and dangers of nostalgia. A narrative tug-of-war takes over the...

I Know What You Did Last Summer's director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson discussed the major cameo in the mid-credits scene and explained how it could potentially set up a sequel. While Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie and Freddie Prinze Jr.'s Ray were the main characters from the original movies to return in the legacy sequel, Brandy Norwood also appears as Karla in the mid-credits scene.
Even though reviews for I Know What You Did Last Summer have been quite disappointing, many fans were delighted to see Karla appear at the end of the film. Brandy previously played Julie's roommate and best friend in the sequel to the original film, 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

Freddie Prinze Jr. is "glad" he was able to keep quiet about Sarah Michelle Gellar's secret cameo appearance in I Know What You Did Last Summer. The actor returned for the new sequel almost 30 years after he starred in the original 1997 slasher opposite his wife Sarah and film fans initially thought the Buffy The Vampire Slayer star would be unable to join him onscreen because her character met an untimely end in the first film. However, it has since been revealed Sarah's beauty queen alter-ego Helen returned for a dream sequence and Freddie was thrilled to have been able to keep it secret until the movie hit cinemas.Freddie told People he "knew from jump" that Sarah would be in the new film, adding: "We were all really excited for audiences to get to see that and get a little bit of extra love that they weren't expecting."It's nice to know a secret,...

I Know What You Did Last Summerstar Madelyn Cline explains the new movie's last minute changes.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cline opened up about the fact that test audiences were overtly upset by the death of her character, Danica, in the newly-released I Know What You Did Last Summer threequel. According to Cline, she "only got the news that I was coming back about two-and-a-half weeks ago," leading to a round of reshoots in which it is shown that Danica did indeed survive her ordeal with the latest murderous Fisherman.
Directed by Robinson from a screenplay co-written with Sam Lansky, I Know What You Did Last Summeris a sequel to 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer, completely ignoring 2006's much-maligned supernaturally-charged direct-to-video threequel,...

The buzz surrounding the legacy sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, which released this month with the same title, has reached a fever pitch, and not just because fans have been eager to see Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) return. Wild speculation recently suggested that Hewitt and Prinze Jr. had off-screen issues that made the two returning actors film all of their scenes for the summer slasher separately.
Thankfully, the film’s director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, has stepped in via social media to clear up the rumors before too much stock begins to be placed in them. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Robinson responded to a fan account who attempted to “spark a debate” about the topic, referencing "cuts and separate shots" that give the appearance the actors may have filmed the scenes separately. The below contains spoilers for “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” now in theaters.
Major, major spoilers for whoever hasn’t seen “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (the 2025 one) yet. Madelyn Cline, who portrays Danica Richards in the film, has a brutal would-be-death scene at the movie’s climax. With Danica seemingly at the bottom of the ocean, it would appear that there was no coming back to the franchise for the “Outer Banks” star. But instead, right at the end, Danica washes ashore. She’s alive against all odds.
In an interview with THR, released July 20 but conducted on June 28, Cline revealed that the ending was a last-minute revision. “I only got the news that I was coming back about two-and-a-half weeks ago,” she said — meaning the scene was shot just about a month shy of the release.

Update July 20, 2025: Superman is still flying high at the box office.
DC Studios and Warner Bros.' James Gunn-led reboot soared to another box-office victory over the July 18-20 weekend, earning $57.3 million domestically — marking a 54 percent drop from its opening weekend. Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth roared into second place with $23.4 million in its third week, while new releases from Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer ($13 million) and Paramount's Smurfs ($11 million) struggled with underwhelming openings. Warner Bros.' F1: The Movie rounded out the top five with $9.6 million.
Superman is just the latest success story for Warner Bros. this year — the studio's sixth number-one movie following Mickey 17, A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and F1. Warner Bros. currently ranks as the top studio of 2025, with $1.32 billion in domestic receipts. However, that position may shift as Disney's highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps is...

It’s been an especially busy summer for Madelyn Cline.

And that’s not even half of it. Just one month ago, she happily carved out time from her existing shooting schedule and flew from South Carolina to Los Angeles in order to film a new ending for her character in Robinson’s slasher.

“Superman” remains up, up and away at the box office. The superhero reboot retained its crown as three new releases, “Smurfs,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” failed to pack a punch in theaters.
In its second weekend of release, “Superman” collected $57.3 million from 4,774 venues — a standard 54% decline from its $125 million debut. After strong weekday holds, the Warner Bros. comic book adventure has earned $236 million domestically and $406 million globally.
“A 54% second weekend drop is indicative of a marketplace that’s embracing the film,” says senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

I was in high school when I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters in 1997. Like many teens, I was excited by the sudden revival of the teen slasher genre, spearheaded by Scream and its many sequels. I Know What You Did Last Summer, while never quite on the level of Scream, was a solid enough slasher that made a lasting impression. It catapulted Jennifer Love Hewitt—already popular thanks to Party of Five—into full-fledged “It Girl” status, while Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Phillippe quickly became rising stars. Sarah Michelle Gellar, of course, was already a household name thanks to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, flopped, as did the direct-to-video third film, and a poorly received Prime Video series that ignored the original films altogether.
Now, Sony is hoping to revive the franchise with I Know What You Did Last Summer...

“Superman” is still atop the hierarchy of power at the box office in its second weekend, flying above new wide releases “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Smurfs” and “Eddington.”
The DC Studios universe-rebooter earned $16.6 million on its second Friday to boost its domestic total to $194.4 million. Factoring out preview screenings from last week’s opening day gross, that’s a 50% drop. The Warner Bros. release has pushed ahead of fellow superhero feature “Thunderbolts*” ($189 million) to now rank as the eighth-highest grossing North American release of the calendar year.
“Superman” should fly to a $235 million domestic total through its first 10 days. Comic book adaptations have become susceptible to hard plummets, given how fans can front-load sales by flocking to opening weekend screenings. The James Gunn-directed “Superman” looks to avoid that fate and resonate beyond its property’s built-in groupies. As comps, Gunn’s three “Guardians of the Galaxy” films had second-weekend drops,...

Although three new movies opened in wide release this weekend, none of them caught the audience’s fancy. They’re all expected to deliver modest numbers at the box office, on the back of audience reviews that can only be described as unimpressive. Director Ari Aster’s latest, the Western black comedy Eddington, earned a C+ grade on the polling platform CinemaScore, as did Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. The horror reboot is eyeing a $15 million haul in its domestic debut, which is hardly the sort of situation that a franchise film of its size should find itself in.
Although a C+ is standard for a horror picture, it’s much lower than the A grade that Ryan Coogler’s Sinnersdebuted with some weeks ago, before grossing over $360 million worldwide. I Know What You Did Last Summer finds itself in the company of recent horror films such as Barbarian,...

This article contains spoilers for "I Know What You Did Last Summer."
If you're a casual fan of slasher films, you may think an article about who the killer turns out to be in the latest "I Know What You Did Last Summer" movie is fairly standard. Yet the property, despite its resemblance to other slasher franchises, has a few subversive tricks up its sleeve. For one thing, even though it's technically a whodunit film series carrying on the template that began in Lois Duncan's source novel, the reveal of who the killer or killers are in each film isn't typical. To wit: Ben Willis (Muse Watson) was the killer in both the original 1997 movie and its sequel, 1998's "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," which added Willis' son Will (Matthew Settle) as his accomplice. In the direct-to-video sequel "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,...

While both Ari Aster’s Eddington and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot earned disappointing C+ grades on the polling platform CinemaScore, fellow debutante Smurfs fared only slightly better. It earned a B+ grade on CinemaScore, which is weak for a family movie. Smurfsdidn’t receive much of a marketing push from the struggling Paramount, echoing what happened with the recent Pixar flop Elio. But even that film managed to earn an A grade on CinemaScore, although it still hasn’t come close to recovering its reported $200 million production budget.
Smurfs’ B+ CinemaScore grade puts it on par with The Garfield Movie, which debuted last year and grossed over $250 million worldwide. Featuring the voice of Chris Pratt, the movie recently scored a sequel announcement. Smurfs comes with its own A-list voice talent; Rihanna voices Smurfette in the movie, which has been directed by Chris Miller...
