Image
After almost two years off the air “So You Think You Can Dance” returned for its 18th season on Monday night, March 4, on Fox. So what happened on the first night of competition? Scroll down for our “Auditions: Day One” live blog, updating throughout the episode.

Cat Deeley is back as host of the show, but there are major changes around her as the series revamps its format for this latest edition of the competition. For starters, we have a refreshed judging panel. “Dancing with the Stars” Mirror Ball champion Maksim Chmerkovskiy is coming onboard “Sytycd” as a judge for the very first time, joining Emmy-nominated “DWTS” and “Sytycd” alum Allison Holker and returning “Sytycd” judge JoJo Siwa, who recently made “DWTS” history as the first celebrity to compete with a same-sex partner, Jenna Johnson; they ultimately finished second. During this year’s “Sytycd” auditions rounds, series All-Star Comfort Fedoke...

‘Naatu Naatu’ Oscars Performance Criticized for Lack of South Asian Representation
Following “Naatu Naatu”s historic Oscar win for Best Original Song the live performance at Sunday’s performance has come under fire for its exclusion of South Asian choreographers and ensemble dancers.

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, who recorded the song for the “Rrr” soundtrack, sang onstage alongside two lead dancers in place of stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. The telecast recreated the scene from the film in which their characters, Ram and Bheem, face off against a large party of white Brits using the power of Telugu dance.

Critics pointed out that the performance was choreographed by “So You Think You Can Dance” duo Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo, neither of whom are of Indian descent. Nor did the ensemble prominently feature dancers of South Asian descent, a missed opportunity for wider representation, critics said.

The Academy did not comment further on the backlash. In an interview with AMPAS’ magazine A.

How the Oscars Failed South Asian Artists with Its ‘Naatu Naatu’ Performance
Image
It seemed like a fairy tale. A commercial Indian movie and irresistible Telugu song made it to the 95th Academy Awards, where the performance of eventual Best Song winner “Naatu Naatu” should have been nothing but a celebration and a milestone for Indian artists.

But when it came to the televised performance, the Oscars opted to work with non-Indian choreographers Napoleon & Tabitha Dumo, who have an existing relationship with the show, and dancers they had prior experience with — none of whom are believed to be of South Asian descent.

According to the official AMPAS publication A.Frame, film stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr were originally slated to be part of the televised segment, reprising their roles as Ram (Charan) and Bheem (Rama Rao Jr). When they declined to perform onstage in late February, producers brought in lead dancers who strongly resemble the actors. The ensemble was already...

Image
American dancer Lauren Gottlieb, who was also seen as a runner-up in the sixth season of ‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa’, is excited to perform on the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ which has been nominated at this year’s Academy Awards as the lead female dancer at the Oscars 2023.

Talking about the opportunity, Lauren shared: “I feel so grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent India on such a global platform. Oscars are one of the biggest stages in the world and for India to be represented in such a big way and get nominated is incredible.”

She further mentioned, “The fact that I have been chosen to be the lead female dancer and connect Bollywood and Hollywood, both the closest things to my heart, is surreal. I feel a big sense of responsibility to make sure the piece is authentic and makes India proud.”

Lauren insisted that she is working...

Emmys 2013: Outstanding Choreography nominees present dance tribute to TV
If you've ever caught yourself wondering what Walt and Jesse would look like popping and locking while watching "Breaking Bad," then the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards were right up your alley.

For the first time ever, the nominees in the Outstanding Choreography category were challenged to all work together to create a special dance performance for the ceremony. In return, their category would be included during the big night, rather than the Creative Arts Emmys a week prior.

So what exactly did nominees Derek Hough ("DWTS"), Allison Holker ("DWTS"), Warren Carlyle ("Rogers & Hammerstein's Carousel"), Mandy Jo Moore ("Sytycd"), Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo ("Sytycd"), Travis Wall ("Sytycd") and Sonya Tayeh ("Sytycd") come up with?

Well, it was a tribute to the Emmys and several of the shows nominated for Outstanding Series that opened on host Neil Patrick Harris singing "Luck, Be A Lady" before devolving into a series of homages to the series,...

Emmys 2013: The complete winners list
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad (2008)
Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were upset in their respective acting categories, but Breaking Bad won the night’s top prize, taking home its first Emmy for Best Drama. It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

Not every category yielded a stunner,...

Travis Wall on Emmy Nom & 'Sytycd' As Live Therapy
Travis Wall in All the Right Moves (2012)
Travis Wall was a fan-favorite during season two (and that year's runner-up) of So You Think You Can Dance, but it wasn't until he began choreographing for the show that fans truly began to understand the depths of his talent. In the same instant that Jason caught Jeanine as she spiraled through the air, Travis snatched our hearts and hasn't stopped putting them through an emotional two-minute wringer for the last five seasons.

As a result of his groundbreaking work, Wall has earned three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Choreography, and this year, all the nominees in his category -- Derek Hough & Allison Holker, Warren Carlyle, Sonya Tayeh, Mandy Moore and Napoleon Dumo & Tabitha Dumo -- will combine their tremendous gifts to create a routine for the Emmy stage! I caught up with Wall to talk about his accomplishments on the current Sytycd season and find out what it means to be an Emmy nominee!

Harry Shum Jr. Invites Olympians to 'Glee'
Ryan Guzman
The New Directions won the coveted national championship title last season, but Harry Shum Jr. has set his sights on even higher horizons—Olympic glory. The Glee star and other recognizable faces in the dance community got in the Team USA spirit on Saturday at 2012 Dizzy Feet Foundation Celebration of Dance Gala.

Known for its A-list roster of guest stars, Harry told ETonline, "It would be fun to do a musical number with a whole bunch of gymnasts and swimmers… I'm sure the girls wouldn’t mind Michael Phelps coming in as a guest star." Something that might make a splash on the hit show is a viral rendition of Call Me Maybe.

Derek Hough’s movie shows that dancing has taken off
By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith

HollywoodNews.com: Yes, there are a lot of “Dancing With the Stars” fans missing popular pro Derek Hough this season. However, “He is off to Canada to film a movie, ‘Cobu 3D.’ He’s starring. He’s dancing and acting,” notes Julie McDonald of the dance romance in which Hough’s leading lady is Asian star BoA. “He wants to do other things, and this is a wonderful opportunity for him.”

Hough is among the elite group of dance talents represented by McDonald’s Msa agency — so she knows. The former dancer (whose own career was cut short by injury) has more than 20 years’ experience in working with dancers, stage director and choreographers, including “So You Think You Can Dance” choreography faves Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo. Tabitha and Napoleon happen to be choreographing “Cobu,” in addition to assignments like Fox’s “Mobbed” and “The Kids Choice Awards,...

'Sytycd': Ashley and Kent compare dancing with all-stars vs. contestants
"So You Think You Can Dance" Season 7's new format threw most of the fans for a loop.

With the all-stars in play, there were less finalists this time around, which we're still not thrilled about, but we'll take what we can get.

As the competition got underway the first few weeks, we weren't so sure about the all-star pairing since they mainly served to highlight just how untried the competitors were. Occasionally, an all-star and a contestant had decent chemistry, but it was still odd to watch a performance and still have our eyes drawn to the all-star.

The Alex Wong and Stephen "tWitch" Boss hip-hop number certainly changed perceptions of the benefits of pairing with an all-star. Perhaps it was a combination of chemistry, Wong's virtuosity or choreographer Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo's savvy, but all eyes stayed on Wong. The routine was the highlight of the whole evening.

Emmy Nominations Reveal Few Surprises
It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.

Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.

MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.

Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

'So You Think You Can Dance' Top 10 Recap: New Pairings, New Rules
As the competition gets down to the final 10 of "So You Think You Can Dance" season 5, new rules are set, placing the judges out of the decision-making and giving America a chance to vote for individuals. Though the dancers now have to fight for American votes individually, they will still perform in couples, but there's a twist: each week they will get different partner. For this week, Kayla was paired with Evan, Ade with Janette, Jeanine with Jason, Kupono and Randi, and Brandon with Melissa.

Before all of the couples took the stage, the top five girls opened the show by performing a Bollywood routine choreographed by Nakul Dev Mahajan. Working as a group instead of trying to outshine one another, the girls stayed with the music the whole time and earned praises from judges. Nigel thought the group's performance was fantastic and said they were "five of the most...
