Norm Macdonald’s ‘Dirty Work’ Gets Even Dirtier Almost 30 Years After Its Release
Image
In 1998, “Saturday Night Live” colleagues Norm Macdonald, Frank Sebastiano, and Fred Wolf teamed up to write “Dirty Work,” a vehicle for Macdonald in which he played a prankster who put his talents to professional use by opening up a revenge-for-hire business. The comedy, directed by comedian Bob Saget, quickly came and went from theaters but found its audience on home video, where it became a beloved cult classic with famous fans like Kevin Hart, who declared it one of his favorite movies of all time on his “Comedy Gold Minds” podcast.

Yet for the filmmakers, “Dirty Work” always felt like a compromise, because commercial considerations dictated that it be released with a PG-13 rating even though it was written as an R movie. “When we wrote the movie, they told us not to worry about the rating,” Sebastiano told IndieWire. “If we had been a little more experienced, maybe we...

'New York Ninja' the '80s Martial Arts Gem Is Streaming Free on Tubi
Image
The '80s are a beloved era for many cinema fans. It is often considered the golden age of horror, the decade defined by coming-of-age films like Stand by Me and The Breakfast Club. The action genre is no different, having delivered such classics as Die Hard, The Terminator, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Still, another side of the '80s has aged like fine wine: camp. And when it comes to camp, '80s action delivers some of the most memorable and entertaining films.

New York Ninja embodies '80s camp, unlike any other film, with its fascinating history — discovered, remastered, and released decades after it was initially shot — and its delivery of absurd action in a dystopian New York landscape. The best part? This unearthed gem is currently streaming for free on Tubi.

8 New Horror Movies Releasing This Week Including ‘Barbarian’ in Theaters
Image
With summer (unofficially) over and the Halloween Season now in full swing, these weekly roundups are about to get very packed with fresh new horrors both at home and in theaters!

Eight brand new horror movies are releasing in this first full week of September, and trust me when I say even that makes for a quiet week compared to what’s coming soon.

Here’s all the new horror arriving September 6 – September 11, 2022!

First up, Dread’s Tiny Cinema was just unleashed On Demand yesterday, a horror anthology of multiversal madness that’s also coming to Blu-ray on October 11 of this year.

Sit back, relax, and get uncomfortable…

From the makers of Butt Boy, Tiny Cinema is said to be “a twisted tale of seemingly unconnected strangers whose lives will change in incredible and bizarre ways forever. As reality unravels, each person must battle incredible challenges from a multiverse seeking...

‘The Dead Girl in Apartment 03’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Bryan Manley Davis, Laura Dooling, Jennie Osterman, Jasmine Peck, Frank Wihbey, Adrienne King, Michael Schantz | Written and Directed by Kurtis Spieler

Let’s clear one thing up before we start, The Dead Girl in Apartment 03 is billed as being “From the director of New York Ninja”. But it’s directed not by John Liu who actually shot the footage. Instead, it’s the work of Kurtis Spieler, the man who oversaw the dubbing and assembled Liu’s footage into an actual film. So if you’re watching and expecting that film’s epic lunacy, you may be disappointed.

The film opens in an NYC police station with Christian being interrogated about the events that led to three dead bodies being found in an apartment and the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend Laura. He prefaces his story with “Do you believe in ghosts?” as the scene shifts to several hours...

Review: New York Ninja, Goofy Action, Genuine Heart
Image
It was probably the moment in New York Ninja in which the titular vigilante digs a bullet out of his chest with a custom engraved "N Y Ninja" throwing star that truly made me think, "Yeah, this is the good stuff," and if you aren't sold by that, I'm sorry friend, I don't wanna know you. With a backstory almost as amazing and perplexing as the story onscreen, John Liu/Kurtis Spieler's New York Ninja is an absurd, outré, completely unbelievable cult classic in the making. A vigilante ninja romp through classic grimy '80s New York written, directed by, and starring Liu, one of Hong Kong's king kickers, New York Ninja was an attempt to break through to the American audience in 1985, only to be...

‘New York Ninja’ Review (Vinegar Syndrome)
Image
Stars: Don ‘The Dragon’ Wilson, John Liu, Leon Isaac Kennedy, Linnea Quigley, Ginger Lynn, Cynthia Rothrock, Michael Berryman | Directed by John Liu, Kurtis Spieler

The story behind New York Ninja is almost as incredible as the film itself. In 1984 Taiwanese martial artist and actor John Liu came to New York City with the intention of filming his latest movie there. While he did shoot it, he was so unimpressed by the results he abandoned the project and left the unedited footage in a vault and retired from filmmaking. An there it sat for thirty-five years later the footage came into the hands of film restoration specialists Vinegar Syndrome. They had the technology, they could rebuild it, all except for one critical element. The film’s soundtrack was missing, as was the script.

So they wrote a new one, not a spoof but authentic-sounding 80s style dialogue. And they hired a...

‘The Devil’s Well’ Review
Stars: Bryan Manley Davis, Anne-Marie Mueschke, Chris Viemeister, Lauren Sowa, Kris Manners | Written and Directed by Kurtis Spieler

The Devil’s Well and living in New England, it seems. The found footage subgenre shows no signs of giving up the ghost – but, on this evidence, it’s showing plenty of signs of stagnation.

Karla Marks (Anne-Marie Mueschke), a paranormal activity enthusiast, went missing during a trip to visit the fabled “Devil’s Well”, a supposed gateway to Hell hidden in a creepy abandoned building. The first half of the film is mostly comprised of talking heads interviews with local police officers, lawyers and the main suspect himself: Bryan (Bryan Manley Davis), Karla’s husband, who was with her when she vanished. There’s a lot of dry and frankly dull speculation about what might have happened. The script is flavourless.

Then, like Cannibal Holocaust, which also left its found footage stuff for the second half,...
