Tom Hanks' Forgotten Historical Drama Makes Streaming Comeback
Image
Tom Hanks' acclaimed historical drama series John Adams is becoming a hit all over again thanks to a streaming resurgence. Paul Giamatti played the title character — one of America's founding fathers and second president — in the 2008 HBO series.

Per FlixPatrol, John Adams has rocketed back into Max's top 10 streaming shows as of Sunday, July 6. While the sudden streaming surge may have been sparked by the July 4 holiday weekend, it's still an impressive feat considering John Adams is 17 years old.

Hanks executive produced John Adams along with his long-time Playtone partner Gary Goetzman. The pair enlisted screenwriter Kirk Ellis (Anne Frank: The Whole Story) to adapt author David McCullough's 2001 biography John Adams, which won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography.

Director Tom Hooper also had his international breakthrough on the series, after getting his start working in British TV. He would later win a Best Director Oscar for...

Fourth of July
2025 marks the 249th anniversary of the 'Declaration of Independence', signed July 4, 1776, when the 'Continental Congress' declared the original thirteen American colonies as united, free and independent states:

The 'Continental Congress' declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject and subordinate to the monarch of Britain, 'King George III'...

...and were now united, free, and independent states.

"It will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America,"…

…said US 'Founding Father' John Adams at the time of the Declaration.

"I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations…

“… as the great anniversary festival.

"It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance…

“…by solemn acts of devotion to 'God Almighty'.

"It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade...

...with shows, games, sports…

...bells, bonfires and illuminations...

"...from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

What Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” Does, And Does Not Do, For Hollywood
Image
Updated: When Donald Trump signs the “Big, Beautiful Bill” on Friday, it will be a starting point for a big messaging battle with an eye on the 2026 midterms.

Hollywood activists are likely to play a big part in that, particularly on the left, where the concern is not only on the major cuts to Medicaid and nutrition programs but a huge increase in funding for immigration enforcement. The legislation also has a large-scale rollback of clean-energy initiatives, to the dismay of everyone from climate activists to Elon Musk.

Overall, Republicans’ goal in passing the legislation was to extend the tax cuts that were put in place in 2017, during Trump’s first term, as well as to add billions to border security and defense spending.

The legislation also makes across-the-board tax changes to things like deductions for highly compensated employees and to charitable giving. One of the most hotly contested was...

One Historically Accurate AMC+ Show with 85% Audience Score Is a 4th of July Must-Watch
Image
In recent years, historical and period dramas have taken up significant space on television and streaming, including those with a more fantastical edge than archival accuracy. Shows like Carême and The Crown that stylistically merge documented notes from the past with a flair for histrionics have quickly racked up a steady viewership count alongside proper ratings.

On the other hand, there exist shows like Band of Brothers and Chernobyl that leave no space for argument regarding their factual accuracy and realism. Among such heavyhitters lies Turn: Washington’s Spies – a mostly forgotten drama hidden within the folds of history that has all the love of its niche fan base but none of the access offered by modern streaming.

‘The Gilded Age’ Seasons 1-2 Recap: Everything To Know Before Season 3
Image
The Gilded Age is like the Downton Abbey of America. Set in the titular time period, the show tells the story of a bunch of families living in New York’s most expensive neighborhood and competing to be the most poncy family there. While shows such as Bridgerton and even The Buccaneers focus more on young lovers, which we all love, The Gilded Age is more focused on those approaching middle age trying to stay relevant in society. It’s an intriguing game of politics, not just between the men who believe they are doing all the work to keep society afloat, but also the women who have such a key role to play. It’s fascinating, really, but more importantly, the show also focuses on the Black community and how they fought for their place at this time of the “new,” too. With that said, though, let’s jump straight into the recap.

The 10 Best HBO Miniseries, Ranked
Image
HBO has long been a cornerstone of consistently compelling and well-made programming, whether it's movies, documentaries, TV shows, or, perhaps the best of both worlds, a miniseries. The premium network is well known for their particularly impressive roster of miniseries since its inception in 1972, and they've continued to up the ante with what they've produced even in just the last five years. In fact, it seems like every year there's at least one major miniseries achievement for the channel.

There have been so many excellent series over time that it actually seems quite daunting to choose only 10 in a list of the best HBO miniseries, but honestly, if we didn't, this list would just end up encompassing quite literally most of the HBO miniseries catalog. Plus, it can at times feel impossible to put them in a definitive order because they're all so good, but someone's gotta do it.

Here are the 10 best HBO miniseries,...

Shudder Immortalized 10 Years of Horror with a Friday the 13th Tattoo Party [Event Report]

Celebrating Shudder’s 10th Anniversary with Tattoos, Memories, and Community
Image
Over the weekend, I flew roughly 5,500 miles roundtrip to get a new tattoo. A cross-country journey that started in Los Angeles and granted me 20-ish hours in New York City. That sounds looney tunes, right? In most contexts, I'd agree with you—but this was a landmark weekend. On Friday the 13th of June, 2025, horror watchers, creators, and other industry folks gathered at Wild Heart Tattoo Shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to celebrate Shudder's 10th birthday.

Senior Vice President of Programming and Acquisitions Sam Zimmerman explains why AMC's nightmare factory chose to honor a decade of streaming screams with ink and artistry:

"Something we cherish about Shudder is how much of it is driven by the taste and passion of the team. That taste extends beyond our films, to the way we [and our guest curators] present ourselves, and well, many of us are tattooed. We also knew the folks at Wild Heart were horror and Shudder fans,...

Hollywood Flashback: When Paul Giamatti Was Elected to Win an Emmy
Image
Seventeen years ago, Paul Giamatti earned his first Emmy for playing the second president.

The actor portrays the titular politician in director Tom Hooper’s seven-part HBO miniseries John Adams, which chronicles the initial 50 years in American history. Adapting author David McCullough’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, John Adams continued Hooper’s collaboration with HBO that began with the Emmy-winning 2005 miniseries Elizabeth I, starring Helen Mirren.

Hooper, who would later win the best director Oscar for 2010’s The King’s Speech, was looking for an actor to properly convey the demons surrounding the Founding Father known for helping to draft the Declaration of Independence and serving as the nation’s first vice president under George Washington before being elected to a single term as commander in chief. “[Giamatti] fit the sense I had of Adams as an antihero, to explore the flaws of the man in addition to his greatness,” the director has said.

Right-Wingers Are Struggling to Cope With the Trump-Musk Feud

Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s bromance appears to be over after the president and the world’s richest man went after each other with a vengeance on Thursday. Musk called Trump “sad,” alleged the president is on the Epstein list, and even suggested he should be impeached.

Paul Giamatti Says He Finally Got on the Phone With Cher After Years of Missed Calls – Here’s What She Wanted to Talk About | Video
Image
Paul Giamatti and Cher finally connected and spoke last year after years of phone tag.

While appearing on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” Thursday, the actor reminisced about the host being on his podcast and mentioning that his number one dream guest was Cher. Colbert admitted to putting some of his weight behind the proposal and asked on Giamatti’s most recent visit to his show if he managed to track the singer down. Apparently the two finally connected after years of missed calls at the end of 2024.

“Cut to me working in Toronto, I’m in a hotel room and the phone rings,” Giamatti said. “I’m watching ‘Rockford Files’ or something on the television and the phone rings, it’s an unknown number, it’s from California. I pick it up and a voice says, ‘Hey, it’s me.'”

Colbert asked if Giamatti knew who it was and the actor exclaimed,...

Mike Flanagan Loves this Gory and Gorgeous Free-To-Stream Chiller Critics Call “An exquisite cinematic experience”
Image
I’ve been keeping tabs on Mike Flanagan via Letterboxd for some time now. I’ve perused his lists and read quite a few of the critiques he’s penned for the platform. From all of that, two things are clear: the Oculus director has great taste, and he’s a champion of under-seen indie gems. Speaking of which, I’ve got a Flanagan-approved indie recommendation to share with you today.

But first, allow me to provide a little context. Flanagan has carefully assembled a list of his favorite horror films on Letterboxd. The ranking of which I speak is three pages long and features some exceptional selections. I was perusing that very list when one of his picks caught my eye. Accordingly, I felt compelled to spread the good word. The film is none other than Where the Devil Roams.

The setup for this Mike Flanagan-endorsed shocker goes like...

16 worst awards moments of 2024, from Jo Koy’s Globes to double Emmys to Taylor Swift’s inevitable Grammy
Image
We tune in to awards ceremonies for the soaring moments — the history-making wins, upset victories, redemption stories, heartfelt speeches, and killer performances. But mixed in with all those highs are some dreadful lows. And 2024 had its fill, from the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys (under-recognition for Curb Your Enthusiasm and Better Call Saul), and the Grammys (Taylor Swift‘s Album of the Year victory).

Enjoy (or cringe at) the 16 moments Gold Derby has chosen as the year’s lowlights:

Having two Emmy ceremonies in one year

Look, we get it: The combined actors’ and writers’ strikes threw a significant wrench into the awards-industrial complex. And the right decision was canceling the 2023 Emmys. But the wrong decision was blind adherence to “the show must go on” and staging an Emmys ceremony in early 2024 — five months after the votes had been cast, and setting the stage for two Emmy ceremonies in the same year.

The Gilded Age and The Boys spinoff Gen V add cast members ahead of new seasons
Image
You might think that The Gilded Age, HBO's mannered period drama about feather-light conflict between members of the upper crust in 1880s New York City, doesn't have anything in common with Gen V, a spinoff of The Boys where college students get their heads lasered off by sociopathic superheroes. And you'd be right...except for one thing: both of them are greatly expanding their casts ahead of their new seasons: that's season 3 for The Gilded Age and season 2 for Gen V.

Let's start with The Gilded Age, which counts the likes of Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denee Benton, Taissa Farmiga, and Harry Richardson among its cast. Deadline reports on six new cast members coming aboard for season 3, some of them playing real-life figures from the time:

Dylan Baker (The Good Wife) is Dr. Logan, who treats super-fancy high society familiesKate Baldwin is Nancy Adams Bell, the older sister...

Golden Globe predictions: ‘Shōgun’ out front in 3 top categories
Image
Is “Shōgun” about to pull a “Succession” at the 2025 Golden Globes?

Currently at Gold Derby, the FX historical epic leads three top categories in our Golden Globe predictions: Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, and Best Drama Actress for Anna Sawai. If it also manages to pull off a fourth victory in a supporting race, it would match “Succession’s” total of four from last year.

For its final season, HBO’s family drama won the series prize at the Golden Globes and it also took home trophies for lead actors Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook, plus supporting player Matthew Macfadyen.

If “Shōgun” rides off with only the three top categories for series, lead actor, and lead actress, it would still be in good company indeed, as only a handful of dramas have done so. Besides “Succession” in 2023, “The Crown” most recently accomplished this feat in 2020. Before that,...

Emmys Final Recap: A Night of Firsts, As ‘Shogun’ Streaks, ‘The Bear’ Makes History and ‘Hacks’ Surprises
Image
Awards shows are often only as memorable as the winners and their acceptance speeches. Heading into the 76th Emmys, the conventional wisdom was that Television Academy voters would make it a predictable sweep for “Shōgun” and “The Bear.” And indeed, both series did well, making history with their victories. But there were still enough surprises during the telecast, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, to make for an interesting night.

The biggest shocker, of course, came at the end of the broadcast, when “Hacks” pulled off an upset win over frontrunner “The Bear” in the outstanding comedy series category. That was a clear flex by the writer flank of the TV Academy to reward a beloved show that revolves around the business of comedy — as a point of contrast to shows that tip to the drama side of the dramedy equation. For producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay,...
