Among the new age Star Trek shows, Strange New Worlds has definitely come out on top, but how well does it hold light to some of the Og shows? The episodic prequel to Tos sees the Enterprise headed by Christopher Pike, with a young Spock and a newbie Uhura also being on board the ship before they serve under Captain Kirk.
Despite being spun off from Discovery, Strange New Worlds has taken an identity of its own and has become the most anticipated show in the franchise. Coupled with the animated series Lower Decks, the Anson Mount-starrer has brought in a new era of Star Trek that blends nostalgia and the best parts about the franchise. Here are five reasons why Strange New Worlds is better than one of the most popular Star Trek shows.

Production is underway on season two of the Netflix hit comedy-mystery A Man on the Inside, and it will feature a pair of new co-stars who happen to be Star Trek veterans. Season one, which dropped in November of 2024, stars Ted Danson as Charles Nieuwendyk, a bored retiree who lands a job assisting a private detective attempting to track down a ruby necklace gone missing at a San Francisco retirement home. Season two will find Charles still working at the private detective agency and no doubt serving as the inside man again on a new case.
The actors from the Star Trek universe joining the cast of A Man on the Inside are Linda Park and Jason Mantzoukas. Park was a regular on Star Trek: Enterprise, portraying Ensign Hoshi Sato for all four seasons of the show’s run. Netflix has announced on their social media that Ted Danson’s bittersweet comedy A Man on the Inside is in production for its second season. Created by Mike Schur, the show was praised for its heartfelt portrayal of life in a retirement home and the realities of aging.
Loosely based on Maite Alberdi’s Academy Award-nominated documentary The Mole Agent, A Man on the Inside follows Ted Danson as Charles, a recent widower who goes uncover in a retirement home to catch a jewelry thief. Things get complicated at Pacific View retirement home as the amateur sleuth must balance his covert investigation with forming friendships with the residents.
Ted Danson told Tudum that the casting came around not long after the 77-year-old started considering what it was like to age on screen. “Even before they reached out to me, I was thinking I wanted to discover what it is to...

We're still not over the end of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and to be quite honest, we might never be. Every "Star Trek" fan loves "Lower Decks." Well, at least all of us here at /Film do -- I can't speak for any of the contrarian weirdos out there who hate fun or are somehow allergic to animation. Fans have become extremely attached to the cast, and their voices now rattle around in the dark recesses of our brains. Whenever I do a rewatch of "Craig of the Creek" (another show coming to an end too soon), I feel my heart break a little whenever Noël Wells' voice as Kelsey creeps into sounding like her "Lower Decks" character, Ensign D'Vana Tendi. I'm just not ready to admit that it's really over.

As far as television science fiction goes, no show has had such a legacy or enduring influence on the genre and medium as "Star Trek." With nearly a dozen shows since the start of the franchise in 1966, "Star Trek" has effectively blended social commentary with hard sci-fi concepts and earned millions of fans worldwide. However, not every "Star Trek" series has come out the gate on its best foot, with many needing to find their overarching direction over time. These first impressions are made through pilot episodes, with networks deciding to commission the series through the strength of this inaugural episode.
The various "Star Trek" pilot episodes are a fascinating look back at the shows' history, and in some cases, they're far from how each respective series would gradually evolve. The ensemble casts of each show tend to find their characters quickly, but maybe not quite fully grown into them yet.

Warning: Spoilers For Star Trek: Lower Decks' Season 5 Finale - "The New Next Generation"
In one particular way, Star Trek: Lower Decks is more realistic than Star Trek: The Next Generation. The adventures of the USS Cerritos just came to an end with the series finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount+, as Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) and the eclectic crew of the USS Cerritos came together to save the universe from an unstable quantum fissure. After the Cerritos created a permanent portal to infinite Star Trek timelines, Starfleet moved Starbase 80 to the wormhole's entrance and put Captain Freeman in charge of the missions to other quantum realities.
Following Captain Freeman's exit, Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O'Connell) accepted a promotion to become the new Captain of the Cerritos. Several other characters have been promoted throughout Star Trek: Lower Decks' five seasons, including all of the lower deckers. Lieutenants...

Star Trek: Lower Decks returned for season 5 in October 2024, which was also the animated comedy's final season on Paramount+. Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4's finale, "Old Friends, New Planets" ended on a cliffhanger, as Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) sacrificed her Starfleet career so that the USS Cerritos' crew could rescue Lt. Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome.) While Lt. Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) was sad about Tendi's departure, the rest of the Lower Deckers were confident that the lovable Orion would return to Starfleet in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5.
Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4's ending resolved why Lieutenant Beckett Mariner is so intent on remaining a Lower Decker: the tragic death of her idol and friend from Starfleet Academy, Ensign Sito Jaxa (Shannon Fill) from Star Trek: The Next Generation, instilled a desire within Mariner to avoid a rank that could mean sending another Starfleet Officer to their death.

After four years on the air and 50 episodes under its belt, "Star Trek: Lower Decks" finally signs off this week with a series finale that's as epic and exciting as anything the series has ever done. "Lower Decks" has had a rocky road to its moment of triumph; the show's adult humor and gentle ribbing of past "Trek" properties rubbed some traditionalists the wrong way before it even started, and many fans spent its first few seasons judging whether or not the show had properly proven itself as a piece of "Trek" canon.
But "Lower Decks" never wanted to be just like other "Star Trek" shows. The series is wackier than most of its predecessors, and lighter, too. In most cases, it forgoes Gene Roddenberry-style moralizing in favor of fun, bite-sized escapades, jokey commentary on the vast world of "Star Trek," and adventures that specifically benefit from its animated medium.

Spoiler Warning: This story includes plot developments of the series finale of “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
When “Star Trek: Lower Decks” premiered during the height of the pandemic in August 2020, it was seen as a somewhat radical experiment: It was the first animated “Trek” show since the 1970s. It was the first “Trek” comedy ever. And it was the first time a “Trek” show focused on the junior officers aboard a Starfleet vessel: ne’er-do-well genius Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), anxious tryhard Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Orion science officer D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and cybernetically enhanced engineer Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), all serving aboard the minor league starship the U.S.S. The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 9, "Fissure Quest," now streaming on Paramount+.
Star Trek: Voyager actor Garrett Wang reprises his fan-favorite role of Harry Kim for Star Trek: Lower Decks, but with a twist that only the animated series could pull off. Rather than portray the familiar Kim from the main Star Trek universe, Wang plays a whole host of Kims plucked from different corners of the multiverse to safeguard all of reality. He also lends his voice to an alternate universe Lieutenant Harry Kim, whose rare promotion overshadows his descent into villainy.
In an interview with Cbr, Garrett Wang talks about taking on this uniquely multi-faceted approach to reprise his role as Harry Kim. He also reflects on the evolving legacy of Star Trek: Voyager and his prominent role on that show. Plus, he shares his feelings about getting to add more comedy to the Star Trek world.

Nearly 70 years since the original series debuted, Star Trek remains one of the most durable franchises in pop culture, encompassing movies, books, comics, video games — and, of course, multiple TV spin-offs. Lately, Paramount+ has made it possible for Trek creators to try things out across timelines and phases. Bring back Picard for his own show? Why not? Reimagine a Starfleet captain as a parallel-universe villain, and cast Michelle Yeoh? Sure! Make a starship the backdrop for an animated workplace sitcom that honors Trek canon without being totally humorless about it? Yes.

In a sea of science fiction series that take themselves far too seriously, “Star Trek Lower Decks” has been a sweet and funny balm, a loving parody of the iconic speculative fiction universe that celebrates and pisses on its history in equal measure. Like all good sitcoms, however, “Lower Decks” is coming to an end, and the finale promises to be…maybe, possibly, moderately serious?

Jerry O'Connell thinks Star Trek: Lower Decks saved the best Jack Ransom moment for last.
"My favorite Ransom scene comes in the finale. It's good, and people are going to be satisfied with it," O'Connell told Bleeding Cool ahead of Lower Decks' penultimate episode's release, with the animated Trek show concluding its five-season run on December 19. While he didn't reveal too much about its plot, O'Connell described the series finale as "a bridge episode that takes place on the bridge... getting out of the musty, moldy lower decks and coming up to the bridge where all the action is, finally! [We're] giving the people what they want, no more hanging out in those…I got to tell you, I've been on the lower decks. Everybody smells like feet down there. You don't want to be hanging out down there. Come up to the bridge! It smells great! We have candles lit.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 8 - "Upper Decks"V'Ger, the villain from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, has received two surprising callbacks in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5. In its fifth and final season on Paramount+, Star Trek: Lower Decks has the USS Cerritos fixing fissures in space that lead to alternate Star Trek timelines. However, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 8, "Upper Decks," takes a break to focus on the Cerritos' bridge crew. Amazingly, "Upper Decks" also has two references to V'Ger 45 years after Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
V'Ger is unforgettable in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Introduced as an impossibly vast energy cloud that destroys everything in its path on a direct course for Earth, V'Ger's secret was unlocked by Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and the crew of the USS Enterprise. V'Ger was a massive, sentient starship built from Earth's Voyager 6 space probe,...

Nearly five full seasons into "Lower Decks" and Trekkies might have noticed that some of its most integral characters have remained a bit of an enigma so far. No, we're not talking about our usual crew, all of whom have transformed from some of the franchise's biggest upstarts when the animated series first debuted to fan-favorite additions to the canon. We're not even referring to the simmering rivalry between the delta shift and beta shift on the USS Cerritos, which was first introduced way back in the season 1 episode "Terminal Provocations." No, this team has been hiding in plain sight all along, going about their duty on a daily basis while rarely ever receiving the credit they deserve. Beam us up and away from spoilers. This article discusses major plot developments from the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
"Lower Decks" has been getting a whole lot of mileage out of alternate universe antics during its fifth and final season, starting with the premiere episode that threw our Cerritos crewmembers alongside their mirror selves and kickstarted Ensign Boimler's (Jack Quaid) obsession with growing out that fugly-looking facial hair. That pattern continues in episode 7, titled "Fully Dilated." The action kicks off when Boimler and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) clumsily drop their obnoxious martinis all over the delicate transporter controls, dooming the away team to months (if not years) on the surface of a nearby planet currently undergoing severe time dilation. While Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Tendi (Noël Wells), and T'Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) are trapped indefinitely, they continue to investigate the reason they embarked on the mission in the first place: a purple-colored,...

Spoiler shields up! This article discusses plot details from the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
If "Star Trek: Lower Decks" must end with its fifth and final season (which /Film's Jacob Hall reviewed here), it might as well go out swinging for the fences. That seems to have been the approach from creator/showrunner Mike McMahan and the writing team as a whole so far in this series, in all fairness, but season 5, episode 6 takes this Mo to even greater heights. Titled "Of Gods and Angles," the story sees the crew of the USS Cerritos having to don their diplomacy hats in order to mediate between two disgruntled factions of photon-based lifeforms: alien races made up of cubes and spheres, hilariously enough. Yet, as ridiculous and silly as this gets, the main plot doesn't even take the title for the nerdiest moment of the episode. No, that honor...

However, Lt. Brad Boimler remains obsessed with becoming more like the alternate universe bearded Boimler he met in Star Trek: Lower Decks' season 5 premiere, "Dos Cerritos." In Netflix’s A Man On The Inside, Ted Danson stars as Charles a retired professor who goes undercover in a retirement community to solve the mystery of a resident’s family heirloom that’s disappeared.
Based on the Maite Alberdi’s documentary The Mole Agent, the series, which launches today, could be seen as a limited project, a one and done investigation, but Danson and showrunner Mike Schur are hoping for more cases.
In the finale episode [Spoilers Alert], Danson’s Charles answers his phone from private investigator Julie, played by Lilah Richcreek Estrada. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but I have another job for you,” she says.
“Say no more,” replies Charles before hanging up the phone. “Hey, sorry I do need you to say more but whatever it is, I’m in,” he adds as he calls her back.
The setup is designed for a second season.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Star Reflects on 'Really Emotional' Meeting With Inspiration Nichelle Nichols
One of the stars of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Dawnn Lewis, who voices Captain Carol Freeman, of the U.S.S. Cerritos took inspiration from another StarTrek actor, the late Nichelle Nichols, who played the iconic Nyota Uhura on Star Trek in the 1960s. Lewis told CinemaBlend that what she saw being portrayed in the original series, the respect and collaboration, wasnt something she was used to seeing as a child.
I saw myself in the show in Nichelle Nichols and saw the possibility of all kinds of different people from all kinds of different places working together, respecting each other, collaborating with each other. And thats not what I would see when I would watch any other show or particularly the news growing up in, in the sixties, Lewis said.

For five years, the biggest Star Trek alien villain crossover has been gradually happening on Star Trek: Lower Decks, but in the animated comedy's opening credits. Created by Mike McMahan, Star Trek: Lower Decks is set in the late 24th century of Star Trek: The Next Generation's era. This means everything Star Trek up to that point, from Star Trek: Enterprise, to Star Trek: The Original Series, Tng, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and the first 10 Star Trek movies are ripe for homage or parody. And this includes the numerous aliens Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets have faced.

Star Trek: Lower Decks has teased a surprising possible future for the Ferengi. Although the Ferengi were originally intended to be the main villains of Star Trek: The Next Generation, they came across as too comical during their earliest appearances. After popping up a few times on Tng, the Ferengi finally got more depth on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine thanks in large part to Armin Shimerman's portrayal of Quark. Quark embraced the profit-focused nature of Ferengi culture and made his fair share of mistakes, but he ultimately proved to have a good heart.
Since their introduction, the Ferengi have been depicted as a greedy and cunning species who are often underestimated. They value earning a profit above all else, and their society is built around this concept, meaning the most powerful Ferengi are usually the most savvy businessmen. Star Trek: Lower Decks puts a hilarious twist on a famous quote spoken by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Following the adventures of the USS Cerritos, Lower Decks focuses on the lower-level officers like Lieutenants Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), and their friends. Picking up about about one year after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, Lower Decks continues Star Trek's Tng era. Because of this, several characters from previous Trek shows have popped up on Lower Decks, including Tng's Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes).

Paramount has been cranking out new Star Trek shows like crazy over the past several years, including Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy and Picard. Just last week, Paramount+ started airing new episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated comedy set during The Next Generation era. This is the show's fifth and final season, and according to showrunner Mike McMahan, it's the best one yet.
"Watching any Star Trek, you get a couple seasons in and you’re like, oh, it just clicked," McMahan told StarTrek.com. "They grew the beard. You know what I mean? This is the season where we grow the beard a little bit, and it feels like a nice culmination of everything we’ve been doing so far."
McMahan is very confident, going so far as to promise that the series finale "Will make a lot of people tear up."

Netflix has released a trailer for its upcoming comedy series A Man on the Inside, which features a reunion of star Ted Danson and creator Mike Schur after they worked together on The Good Place.
The show, which Netflix gave a straight-to-series order in March 2023, is based on the Oscar-nominated documentary The Mole Agent. Danson plays Charles, a retired professor who’s in a rut following the death of his wife, having grown distant from his daughter, Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis). Netflix describes the show this way:
“When Charles spies a classified ad from private investigator Julie (Lilah Richcreek Estrada), he’s inspired to roll the dice on a new adventure.
