One of the most important elements of delivering a memorable movie monster is the reveal. It’s a pivotal moment that finally sees the threat reveal itself in full to its prey, often heralding the final climactic confrontation, which can make or break a movie monster. It’s not just the creature effects and craftmanship laid bare; a monster’s reveal means the horror is no longer up to the viewer’s imagination.
When to reveal the monstrous threat is just as important as How, and few contemporary creature features have delivered a monster reveal as surprising or as cool as 2020’s Underwater.
The Setup
Director William Eubank’s aquatic creature feature, written by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) and Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan), is set around a deep water research and drilling facility, Kepler 822, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, sometime in the future.

Underwater is a movie that has been rising in popularity in the years since its initial release in 2020, and that may open the door for a potential sequel to happen.
When Underwater was released, the Kristen Stewart-led failed to light the box office on fire. It bombed with less than $41 million earned worldwide, and it was also met with mixed reviews from critics. Over the past four years, it has grown to be better appreciated, and it recently made a splash on Netflix with high viewership on streaming. If the film is becoming a cult classic, then there may be a growing interest in fans for a sequel. In a new interview with ComicBook.com, Underwater director William Eubank teased his desire to continue the story in another film, admitting his hopes that it will happen one of these days.

Listening to the audio commentary to Underwater, you can hear director William Eubank gush about the set design, the costumes, the creature effects, the title sequence, and so on, and you realize it’s about all that and not the story and characters. Any time you take your eye off the story and characters, you’re in trouble.
Underwater, out now from 20th Century Home Entertainment, is a complete misfire of a horror thriller, effectively remaking Alien and setting it under the sea. It wastes an engaging enough cast anchored by Kristen Stewart, looking as fetching in her underwear as Sigourney Weaver did, and never builds enough original suspense to be worth sitting through.
She plays Norah, a mechanical engineer deep down in a corporate mining facility and of course, the corporation has ignored warnings of strange sightings, leaving the small crew vulnerable. So of course, things go wrong, one after the other,...

What are you afraid of? For many it is the dark. For some it is clowns. However, for this writer’s money, few things send shivers up and down the spine as the vastness and unknowns of the deep blue sea. Most of the globe is populated by these waters and there is something particularly terrifying about those dark, unexplored, and rather alien, depths. This is a fact a few films have picked up on but with Underwater, which is the last film to be released under the 20th Century Fox name following Disney’s acquisition, director William Eubank (The Signal) resurges the aquatic horror genre.
Living up to its title, the film is set entirely beneath the oceans, as a Marianna Trench drilling station is rocked by a mysterious disaster. As the walls begin caving in and water pours into the facility, the remaining crew attempt daring and dangerous ways to escape and survive,...

The new horror film Underwater is a piece so devoid of entertainment value that you may find yourself yearning for the understated elegance of a film like DeepStar Six (1989) or even the subtlety of similar fare like Leviathan (1989). In the end however, this is little more than a collection of nods to far superior films and an examination of what happens when everyone making a movie seems to have lost interest in doing so before the opening credits have even been completed.
The plot of Underwater follows a group of scientists as they try desperately to get to safety when their underwater laboratory complex is damaged by an apparent earthquake all while avoiding a recently awakened subterranean monster.
Director William Eubank, who previously delivered forgettable fare like The Signal (2014) and Love (2011), fails to find anything surprising within himself here and, in fact, seems bored from the onset as the film...

The reason most movies take about 20 minutes or so to get to their "inciting event" is to establish the characters, the stakes, the world, etc. Director William Eubank and writers Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad decide to skip past those 20 minutes in their thriller Underwater and cut right to the action. Unfortunately, this leads to life-and-death decisions with characters we don't really know. If you're going to focus on six people and we know that not all of them are going to survive their perilous journey, then there needs to be a reason to …...

If wishing could make it so, Underwater would be Alien on the ocean floor. Instead, this brazen carbon copy of Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi landmark is just all wet. Shot three years ago, this soggy horrorshow gives credence to the belief that January is the month Hollywood uses to bury its mistakes.

, William Eubank’s “Underwater” is a film out of its time. For one thing, it was shot almost three years ago, back when bonafide disaster artist T.J. Miller was still vaguely cast-able (i.e. before he became so toxic that Mucinex fired him as the company’s spokes-snot). For another, it’s an expensive, original, multiplex-ready B-movie in an era when virtually anything with an $80 million budget has to be about superheroes or new subscribers. In fact, the project’s anachronistic nature is so pronounced that even its profoundly screwed characters can sense it bubbling up around them.
“Underwater” is gasping for air from the moment it starts. Set almost seven miles below the ocean surface aboard a deep-sea drilling complex that’s exclusively populated by hot millennials, the movie dives right into the abyss with nary a hint of set-up. At its center is Norah (Kristen Stewart), a mechanic...

After Underwater‘s first trailer emerged from the Mariana Trench, feedback was mostly “it’s Alien but in the ocean, so what?” Well, you were all right! Underwater is most assuredly William Eubank’s submerged take on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece – which isn’t a negative. Have we forgotten how most movies are reinventions of existing inspirations? Writers Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad owe much thanks to extraterrestrial influencers from the aforementioned The Sphere to Pitch Black, but their seabed storytelling suffers not from copycat syndrome. In space no one can hear you scream, underwater no one can hear you scream, but one thing’s for certain – you *will* scream.

There’s a really strong film to be made with the exact same subject matter as Underwater. In fact, it’s hard to argue that they could have cast it any better, either, as Kristen Stewart is a rock solid central force. However, in a rush to get to the monster movie aspect of the tale, the flick forgets to really invest you in the characters. So, when the terror begins, there’s no real sense of worry for the humans. When it’s focusing on surviving a disaster and the issues with being that deep under the sea, there’s something interesting here. When things begin going bump in the dark, however, it begins to sink. Opening this week, Underwater is a missed opportunity. The movie is a combination of action and horror, filtered through the lens of a survival tale. Taking place deep down by the ocean’s floor,...

I felt frustrated walking out of “Underwater”: Here’s a movie with good production values, a great leading actress, and a fantastic score, yet it gets so lost trying to figure out what story it wanted to tell that it completely forgets to form a connection with the audience.

Universal could not have set it up any better for the wide release of Sam Mendes’ “1917.” After grossing over $2 million from a two-week limited release run, the DreamWorks-produced World War I film is set to go wide on Friday days after winning Best Picture and Best Director at the Golden Globes.
The most recent round of tracking has the awards contender projected to earn around $25 million this weekend, with Universal eyeing $20 million. But the Globes victory has kicked audience awareness and word of mouth into overdrive, and a $30 million-plus start is very possible if interest expands beyond its core demographic of audiences over age 55. The title Underwater is as bland as it comes and yet it’s the perfect moniker for this utterly derivative action/horror hybrid. Kristen Stewart stars as Norah Price, an electrical engineer who works nearly seven miles under the ocean on a drilling platform in the Mariana Trench. As the film opens, Norah is pondering what seems to be a shaky relationship--in a voiceover that only pops up two or three more times over the next 90 minutes--when something causes the Kepler Station underwater rig to collapse around her ears.

Kristen Stewart will go to any length to distance herself from the sun. The upcoming survivalist movie Underwater shows the Twilight star leagues away from her past horror endeavors. They say in space no one can hear you scream, but what about beneath seven miles of water?
In 20th Century Fox’s upcoming horror film “Underwater,” Kristen Stewart tries to escape evil forces not from the depths of the galaxy but at the bottom of the ocean. The cast’s futuristic diving bells still look a lot like space suits, however, giving William Eubank’s film a haunting “Alien” vibe even thousands of leagues under the sea.
Stewart stars alongside T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr. Jessica Henwick, Mamoudou Athie and Gunner Wright as part of a team of researchers who scramble for their survival after an earthquake ravages their ship.

Just a few weeks after Suicide Squad 2 was put on the fast track, a new filmmaker is coming aboard. Warner Bros. has finalized a deal for Gavin O'Connor to write Suicide Squad 2, while also engaging in talks for him to direct the superhero sequel. Still, while the project looks to be finally moving forward, this report claims that filming isn't scheduled to begin until the fall of 2018, giving Gavin O'Connor plenty of time to perfect the story.
The news comes from Variety today, with the report claiming that, after it was confirmed original Suicide Squad director David Ayer won't be returning, this sequel directing gig was among the hottest jobs in town. It did seem at one point that the project was on the fast track, with the studio eyeing Jaume Collet-Serra to direct, with The Legend of Tarzan writer Adam Cozad also coming aboard this summer to write the script,...

Right now, the DC Extended Universe is one giant question mark — and most notably, The Batman may be the biggest question mark of all. Initially, Ben Affleck was set to write, direct, and star in the Caped Crusader film. However, last year saw him backpedaling from the responsibility, and earlier this year, we saw him leave the role of director altogether. So with Affleck free from the obligations of helming that picture, what would be another film we’d see him take on next?
It sounds like, in true Affleck form, he’s headed for a much more grounded project. The Tracking Board is reporting that the two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker is currently in talks with Sony to direct Red Platoon, a film based on the memoirs of the same name from Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha.
The outlet is describing the project as follows:

Ben Affleck may be set to direct Red Platoon, starring his brother, Casey Affleck...
Ben Affleck’s next film as director, following Live By Night, was supposed to be the new standalone Dark Knight adventure, The Batman. There’s still speculation as to whether Affleck is stepping away from the cape and cowl entirely, in spite of his insistence that he’s committed to the role. Away from Gotham City, though, he’s found another project to interest him.
He’s in talks to direct Red Platoon, a war film set in Afghanistan, and based on the memoir by Clinton Romesha. The story is a true one, set in 2009 and around the battle of Kamdesh.
Adam Cozad has been working on a screenplay for this one, although if Affleck does sign on the dotted line, then that’s likely to be rewritten. Ben’s brother Casey is...

Last year we heard that Lionsgate planned to debut The Divergent Series: Ascendant on television rather than in theaters. The intention was then to launch a TV series with the same post-apocalyptic setting. Shortly before the announcement was made, Lionsgate announced a deal to acquire the Starz premium cable service. That deal was finalized last December. Now comes word via Deadline that Starz will be the home for the series, based on Veronica Roth's novels. Here's what we know so far. Who will write and develop the series? Adam Cozad (Tarzan) will write the series; Lee Toland Krieger (The Age of Adaline) will direct. Both were previously attached in those capacities for the planned fourth movie in the big-screen series. They will also serve as executive...

The series began life on the big screen in 2014 with Divergent, based on the hit novels by Veronica Roth, which wowed audiences as part of the young-adult explosion at the time and grossed almost $290million at the worldwide box office. Then in 2015 the sequel,...

The Divergent franchise is inching closer to continuing on the small screen.
Premium cable network Starz is developing a TV take on Ascendant, which was to be the fourth movie in the Divergent franchise.
Writer Adam Cozad (Tarzan) is attached to pen the script as producers Lionsgate look to its newly acquired full stake in Starz to mine the stalled feature franchise. Cozad will executive produce alongside Lee Toland Krieger (Age of Adaline) after they were both previously set to write and direct what would have been the fourth film in the Divergent franchise.
Ascendant is in its early stages of development. It's unclear if the project would reunite any of the stars of the films including Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort. Lionsgate TV and Starz declined comment.

Looks like it’s one and done for Cara Delevingne and the DC Extended Universe…and we can’t say we’re surprised.
The Valerian actress played the part of June Moon (Aka The Enchantress) in 2016’s Suicide Squad, and quickly became the common enemy of Task Force X. A bloated script and clichéd dialogue arguably reduced Delevingne’s supernatural menace to a bland, wholly forgettable villain though, and that’s certainly disappointing, particularly when you consider her performances across Paper Towns and Face of an Angel.
But those holding out hope that Cara Delevingne will get another crack at the Dceu through Suicide Squad 2 needn’t bother; while doing the press rounds for Luc Besson’s Valerian, the model/actress told USA Today that she’s “pretty sure” her time playing June Moon/Enchantress has come to an end.

Just a few months after rumors of Mel Gibson directing Suicide Squad 2 surfaced, it seems the studio has set their sights on another filmmaker. Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed Unknown and Run All Night for Warner Bros., is reportedly the studio's top choice to take the helm on this sequel. Warner Bros. reportedly looked at a number of directors, including Mel Gibson, for this coveted directorial gig, but sources claim the studio is focused on putting Jaume Collet-Serra in the director's chair for this superhero sequel.
Deadline broke the news of Jaume Collet-Serra's potential involvement today, which comes just four months after the studio locked in a new Suicide Squad 2 writer, with Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan) coming aboard to write the screenplay. Original Suicide Squad director David Ayer revealed last summer, just days after the first movie hit theaters, that he was already working on the story for the sequel.

Bane, Scarecrow, and Maxwell Lord – three supervillains that have reportedly been shortlisted for Suicide Squad 2, according to a report compiled by 4chan.

It has been nearly a year since Suicide Squad first invaded theaters and, while we do know what Suicide Squad 2 is definitely happening, Warner Bros. hasn't given us much in the way of solid information about the sequel. At least, based on what we do know, it doesn't seem like the studio is rushing things, which is probably good. It looks like the sequel is coming together, though, as Joel Kinnaman has revealed that, as far as he knows, Suicide Squad 2 will be shooting next year.

As with many projects that are part of the DC Extended Universe, what exactly’s going to happen with Suicide Squad 2 is a bit of a mystery to us. Who will direct it? Which characters from the original will reappear? Which new characters will be added in? And, the biggest question of all, when will it arrive?
While we’re still far from finding out a release date for the movie, one of Suicide Squad‘s stars has revealed when they believe the film will go before the cameras. Rick Flag himself, Joel Kinnaman, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter recently and dropped the following tidbit:
“As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.”
Kinnaman’s reply squares with what we know about the movie so far.

The Shallows director Jaume-Collet Serra is the latest candidate in the mix for Suicide Squad 2, according to a report from Meet the Movie Press (via Screen Rant). Should a deal place, the filmmaker will be working from a script penned by Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan).

The Legend of Tarzan screenwriter Adam Cozad will be taking on the challenge of writing Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros. Cozad hasn't really done anything that impressive; both The Legend of Tarzan and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit were mediocre films with weak scripts.
He has a relationship with Warner Bros., though, and they obviously liked whatever it is that he pitched to them. There's no director attached to the film yet, but the studio is hoping to get Mel Gibson on board. I would really like to see that work out because I think Gibson would do some great things with the movie.
David Ayer wrote and directed the first movie, which turned out to be a lot of fun, regardless of its faults. Ayer is now set to direct Gotham City Sirens with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn.

Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad sequel hasn’t quite landed on which director can handle its damaged little corner of the DC movie universe, but Mel Gibson is apparently still in the running. So, while the studio figures that out, it might as well put together an actual script for the film that goes beyond “Harley Quinn is there.” To accomplish that, Warner Bros. has hired Adam Cozad, who previously wrote last summer’s largely boring The Legend Of Tarzan—which also featured Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie.
This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that Cozad co-wrote 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and worked on an adaptation of the Valiant comic book series Bloodshot, so he has some experience with comic book stuff and disappointing, big-name action movies. Beyond Cozad’s involvement, we don’t know much of anything about Suicide Squad 2, but we do know that ...

The DC Extended Universe is certainly at an interesting point in its life. All of its films have been financial successes, but despite that fact, there are plenty of folks who are almost ready to swear off the universe altogether. So despite their overall financial victories, Warner Bros seems to be making fast, seemingly random decisions, going forward with such films as Gotham City Sirens, Man of Steel 2, The Batman, and of course, Suicide Squad 2, despite their slate already being full.
Not too long ago, it was reported that Harley Quinn would be moving forward with her own female-centric Gotham City Sirens, but that didn’t necessarily ring the death bell for the Suicide Squad franchise. Things stayed quiet for a bit, but soon after, we learned that directors Mel Gibson, Jonathan Levine, and numerous others were in early talks and/or consideration to helm the anti-hero sequel.

Suicide Squad, the now Oscar-winning comic book movie about a bunch of bad guys kind of becoming good guys, is getting a sequel. And it is a big priority for Warner Bros. But before they can move ahead and really get things going, they need to have a story in place. And they are apparently on top of that. The studio is reportedly in negotiations to have Adam Cozad write the script for Suicide Squad 2.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Cozad, who is best known for writing last summer's The Legend of Tarzan, is in talks to pen the Suicide Squad sequel.
