Don't Be Fooled: Metamorpho Is One of DC's Best Characters And They're Overdue For the Spotlight
Image
The newest Superman movie will be willing to share the spotlight with the Man of Steel, as Metamorpho makes his big screen debut, proving he's one of DC Comics' most underrated characters. With an appearance in the first Superman teaser trailer and a new ongoing solo series, 2025 is about to be the year of Metamorpho.

Metamorpho used to be decently popular as a character but slowly fell out of favor. He's appeared in tons of comics, even headlining his own - like the new Metamorpho: The Element Man by Al Ewing and Steve Lieber, which includes a celebratory variant cover by Erica Henderson - and has appeared in several cartoons, most notably Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

But right around the time of the New 52, Metamorpho slowly but surely became less and less important in DC's comics. It's a bit surprising that DC lost interest in him, considering how long he's been around.

Superman Director James Gunn Reveals An Interesting New Detail About Anthony Carrigan's Metamorpho
Image
Metamorpho is one of several DC Comics heroes that will be joining the Man of Steel in the upcoming Dcu Superman reboot, but Anthony Carrigan is the only actor who wasn't spotted on set when the movie was shooting earlier this year.

This understandably led to speculation that the character would be brought to life via CGI, but director James Gunn has now revealed that Carrigan will don a practical costume to play the Element Man.

Some have taken this to mean that Metamorpho will be an entirely practical creation, but we're sure at least some VFX will be utilized to bring his unique powers to the screen. In the comics, Rex Mason has the ability to transmute his body into a wide variety of elemental compounds and form them at will. This allows him to - among other things - stretch, bounce, elongate, and reform himself like rubber or plastic.

5 Young DC Heroes the Dcu Must Use (and 5 It Can Skip)
Image
The DC Universe by James Gunn and DC Studios will be hitting the ground running by introducing classic DC characters in a semi-established shared universe in its first several projects. This opens the door for various DC teams and groups to appear, including the Justice League, the Justice Society and the Teen Titans. The latter is poised to have a movie project of their own.

This sense of legacy will be strong in the Dcu, and it already is in the comic books. While there are several great young heroes in the DC Comics universe that might work well in its cinematic counterpart, there are others that likely might not fit as well. For this reason, James Gunn and Peter Saffron could still be selective about which young heroes fight alongside the most iconic superheroes in upcoming projects.

10 Weirdest Aquaman Villains in DC Comics History
Image
Aquaman's strange villains include the Awesome Threesome, Aquamarines, and Dead Water. Aquaman has faced absurd enemies like Iceberg Head, an Amoeba, Karla, Octopus Man, and Aquabeast. The Human Flying Fish was one of Aquaman's most bizarre foes, capable of flying and outswimming him.

Aquaman is an incredibly powerful DC character, but despite this, he's very rarely given the same respect as characters like Batman or Superman. Part of the reason why Aquaman is rarely respected could be because of his history of fighting truly absurd villains far more than Batman or Superman have ever had to contend with.

Aquaman spends the majority of his time in the deep ocean. Because he is the King of Atlantis, Aquaman's enemies often revolve around deep sea creatures. This has led to some truly bizarre enemies that have challenged Aquaman over the years. Plenty of people know about Aquaman's more famous villains, like Black Manta or Ocean Master,...

Teen Titans Live-Action Movie Planned
Image
A DC comics staple for decades (truly becoming popular in printed form in the 1980s), the Teen Titans have since exploded in cultural awareness mainly thanks to the various animated series, especially the zany, meta Teen Titans Go! series, which spawned its own movie spin-off in 2018. Now a big screen live-action take is in the works at DC Studios.

The squad, primarily comprised of sidekicks to older, more famous heroes, was created by (at least in team form) by Bob Haney, George Kashdan and Bruno Premiani and normally features the likes of Robin, Raven, Aqualad and Kid Flash, among others.

Ana Nogueira, who is already at work on the Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow script that will bring Kora Zor-El (played by House Of The Dragon's Milly Alcock) back to cinemas, will write the screenplay.

The Hollywood Reporter's story on the new development naturally had no details on the potential plot,...

Live-Action Teen Titans Movie Coming From DC Studios
Image
The "Teen Titans" are headed back to the big screen — in live-action form. THR is reporting a live-action "Teen Titans" movie is on the way from Warner Bros. and the James Gunn and Peter Safran-fronted DC Studios. Ana Nogueira is tackling the script. Nogueria is also writing the "Supergirl" movie for DC Studios, and was previously attached to write a different "Supergirl" movie that ended up getting scrapped. Got it? Good.

The Teen Titans first appeared in the pages of "The Brave and the Bold" comic back in 1964, created by Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani. Since then, they've appeared in various forms of media, including animated series and animated films, including the fun "Teen Titans Go!" franchise, as well as the gritty live-action series "Titans," a show primarily known for letting Robin say the f-word.

This new movie is likely to be a whole new take on the characters,...

“Superman” Movie - Enter ‘Metamorpho’
DC Comics character ‘Metamorpho’ aka ‘Rex Mason’, a man made of a shifting mass of chemicals, is played by actor Anthony Carrigan, in the upcoming live-action feature “Superman”:

“…created in 1965 by writer Bob Haney and illustrator Ramona Fradon, ‘Rex Mason’ is an adventurer…

‘…who is hired by ‘Stagg Enterprises’ to retrieve a rare Egyptian artifact, the ‘Orb of Ra’.

“Shortly after hiring him, company CEO ‘Simon Stagg’ learns that Mason has been dating his daughter, ‘Sapphire Stagg’. This and other incidents begin to fuel in Stagg a dislike for Mason that ultimately leads in a plot to kill him.

“ In an Egyptian pyramid, Mason is knocked unconscious by Stagg’s bodyguard ‘Java’ and deliberately exposed to a radioactive meteorite that is the source of the Orb of Ra, transforming him into ‘Metamorpho, the Element Man’.

‘Superman: Legacy’: How Rachel Brosnahan Reacted When She Saw The Suit
Image
“I’m still preparing,” Rachel Brosnahan said Saturday on the SAG Awards red carpet about her big role as Lois Lane in James Gunn’s DC movie Superman: Legacy.

“I’m talking to some journalists, I’m reading a lot of comics — so many I hadn’t read before,” added the actress. “It’s been really fun to dig into this universe.”

Watch the conversation below.

Deadline’s chat with Brosnahan on the red carpet tonight comes in the wake of Gunn assembling the entire cast for a photo at the first script reading in Atlanta earlier this week. One of the big surprises was seeing Nicholas Hoult having already shaved head for his turn as Lex Luthor.

A big deal for Brosnahan during that get-together: “I got to see the suit — and I was blown away!,” said. Suit, meaning not Lane’s but rather the Man of Steel’s...

1 Iconic Dceu Villain Is Taking Harley Quinn's Place as DC's Best Anti-Hero
Image
Warning: Spoilers for DC Power 2024 #1

Black Manta is becoming DC's top anti-hero, showcasing his complexity and family-oriented nature. Black Manta's treatment of both his estranged son and his own crew reveal the depths of his humanity. DC has re-invented Black Manta, making him a prominent and compelling character in recent storylines.

The DC Universe is home to a number of characters of varying alignments, with Harley Quinn being the most successful modern villain-turned-hero of the franchise. However, one of the Justice League's best villains is claiming the Gothamite's spot as the franchise's best antihero: Black Manta.

A vengeful son of a pirate killed by the Aquaman's hand, Manta sails the seas looking to defeat his rival, though he works as a hired gun along the way — including in the story "Lost at Sea" by Deon Bennett and industry legend Denys Cowan from DC Power 2024 #1. In recent years, DC has...

Dcu: Why Teen Titans Should Be Part of The New Slate
Image
When there's trouble, you know who to call. Teen Titans! For an entire generation of kids, these were the lyrics that greeted them as they sat down to watch the popular DC animated series Teen Titans. While originally dismissed by comic book fans at the time of its release for being both different from the source material and also a drastic departure in tone and art style from the popular Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League series, Teen Titans quickly found an audience and is fondly remembered today. Yet despite this popularity, Warner Bros. never capitalized on it with a big-budget live-action feature film.

Just after the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-heads of DC Films, it was announced that DC would be telling a long-form, McU-style story across its films, television shows, and other media. This would kick off with Superman: Legacy, written and directed by Gunn.

10 Great Batman Christmas Stories That Are Surprisingly Full of Holiday Cheer
Image
Quick, name a superhero with a more cynical perspective than Batman. Okay, sure there’s Spawn, but I meant in mainstream comics. Yeah, Punisher, but how about in DC Comics? Sure, there’s John Constantine. But I mean a character less suitable for Christmas stories. What’s that you say? Constantine once crushed the bones of St. Nicolas and snorted them into a powder? And Lobo murdered Santa?

Okay, the point is that Batman doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would make for a good Christmas story. Spider-Man can deliver presents while swinging across New York City and Superman has carried Santa’s slay more than once, but Mr. Vengeance doesn’t even like leaving Gotham. Why would he bother with the North Pole?

And yet, Batman has been at the center of several Christmas stories over the year, and some of them are pretty great. Here...

Doom Patrol Has Had the Strangest DC Canon Journey
Image
All good things must end, and that axiom rings especially true for the quirky, fan-favorite Max original series Doom Patrol. The show releases the second half of its fourth and final season this October, with six brand-new episodes after a nine-month mid-season hiatus that began this past January. Adapting the DC Comics’ superhero team of the same name created by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani, Doom Patrol has leaned into the most absurd possibilities of the genre, combined with the heartbreak that comes with being transformed into a misfit hero through horrifically weird science.

However, more than just examining the peculiarities of being a superhero, Doom Patrol has the bizarre distinction of being a program caught between shuffling streaming platforms, confusing shared universe connections, all while trying to tell its own story across four seasons. And frankly, for a team as unorthodox and weird as the Doom Patrol is,...

Aquaman 2 Just Hinted at the DC Hero’s Darkest Storyline
Image
“I’m gonna kill Aquaman and everything he holds dear,” promises Black Manta in the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “I’m gonna murder his family and burn his kingdom to ash.”

Such boasts are par for the course among supervillains like Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), and most people watching the trailer dismiss it as usual bad guy bluster. After all, the first Aquaman movie earned over $1 billion in 2018 because of its lighthearted tone. Director James Wan and writers David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, working off a story they wrote with Wan and comics scribe Geoff Johns, crafted a fun script that took advantage of Aquaman’s role in the popular imagination and star Jason Momoa‘s undeniable charisma. The movie had plenty of genuinely cool sequences, such as an epic undersea battle and a duel between Aquaman Arthur Curry and his half-brother Orm the Ocean...

Following his Emmy nomination for ‘Barry’, Carrigan, who has alopecia, had an interest in playing Metamorpho even before he got the role.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter he said: “I like comic books, but I’m not a diehard, but I did when all my hair fell out, go through the kind of pantheon of all of these bald superheroes and supervillains and made note of all of them.”

He added: “I remember seeing Metamorpho and I think he had a giant hammer for a hand and I was like, that guy’s badass. Noted. We’ll store that one away.”

Carrigan further said that playing the character...

‘Superman: Legacy’ is currently in active pre-production, and writer/director James Gunn announced that filming is set to start in January 2024. Metamorpho was created by Bob Haney and Ramona Fradon in 1965. Also known as Rex Mason, the character was originally an archeologist, but later became a detective and a founding member of The Outsiders after gaining his abilities. The eclectic look of the character and his unique powers are exactly the type that James Gunn loves to work with. Playing Metamorpho in Superman: Legacy will be the biggest movie Anthony Carrigan has taken on, but it’s not like the actor is unknown. His work on the final season of Barry recently scored him an...
