Image
Finding pop and rock superstardom led Isabella Summers on an exciting journey. While the co-founder of Florence & the Machine (and current member), Summers helped break the band into the mainstream. With the world lifting Florence & The Machine to superstardom, new opportunities came knocking. Hitpig, a new animated film, continues Summers’s career in film and television. After a few hits, the singer/songwriter takes on the world of animation with the new action comedy. She sat down with FandomWire to discuss the exciting transition and the power of seeing her music on screen.

Adding levity to an animated action comedy.

Summers proves how excited she is to talk about Hitpig. “When I got invited to score this, I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ This was my chance to be John Williams!” she exclaimed. “It’s basically Pigs in Space, and we’re doing Star Wars. Everyone got on board with that.

Kaos Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Netflix's Kaos.

The soundtrack of Kaos mixes together contemporary genres with classical music, mirroring the dark comedic, contemporary take on Ancient Greek myths. Kaos is a hilarious, raunchy story that follows three humans who learn theyre destined to fulfill a prophecy that will bring down the Greek gods. The unhinged story thrives partly because it incorporates all the darkest and most twisted parts of Greek mythology but approaches them with a sense of humor. The narrator, Prometheus, helps set the sardonic tone for the series. However, another aspect of the show that contributes to its success is the soundtrack.

The episodes of the Netflix comedy show are packed with songs that shape the tone for the audience. The music that plays with each character in Kaos also reflects their personality. Scenes with Dionysus include eclectic music popular in the LGBTQ+ community. Zeus leans...

Cool Stuff: Listen To Lisa Frankenstein's Vinyl Soundtrack While Building An Undead Boyfriend
Image
Back in March of 2023, we reported on the death of the greatest boutique pop culture poster company, Mondo. Granted, the company still exists in name only underneath the Funko brand, but Mondo as we once knew it (including a majority of the founders and core staff that made the company possible) is over. Fortunately, a savior appeared in the form of ... the team that gave us Mondo in the first place and the wonderful weirdos (Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah) over at SpectreVision. Former Mondo creative directors Spencer Hickman, Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, and Mo Shafeek joined CEO Jenny Jacobi to form the new company, Mutant, which will produce limited-edition artwork, posters, soundtracks on vinyl, collectibles, events, and more.

One of Mutant's first releases is the original motion picture soundtrack for "Lisa Frankenstein," so you can relive all the glorious, creepy '80s goodness whenever the urge to build your own undead boyfriend beckons.

Tim Burton
Lisa Frankenstein Review: Love You to Death
Tim Burton
The story of a shy teenage girl who comes out of her shell after raising the boy of her dreams from the dead sounds like a job for the Tim Burton of yore. And yet, Lisa Frankenstein’s strengths are so specific to a weirdo female gaze that even the certified freak who made Beetlejuice would’ve failed to deliver on the potential of this film’s premise.

Diablo Cody’s script—operating on the same wicked, smirking wavelength as her now-cult classic Jennifer’s Body—is absolutely fearless in chasing the darkest implications of this story to its bitter end. The film gleefully lets its body count—in both the homicidal and sexual sense of the term, sometimes in the same scene—add up in gruesome, macabre fashion.

Getting there, though, is somewhat rough. Just as Lisa (Kathryn Newton) can’t seem to connect with the world around her at first,...

Former Mondo Creatives Form New Company with Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision
Image
Back in March 2023, the Austin-based collectibles and poster company Mondo was hit with a wave of layoffs from parent company Funko, including the company’s former co-founders and creative directors. Today, those leaders have announced their comeback.

Former Mondo creative directors Spencer Hickman, Eric Garza, Mitch Putnam, and Mo Shafeek have teamed up with CEO Jenny Jacobi to form a new company called Mutant, which will release limited-edition artwork, posters, soundtracks on vinyl, collectibles, events, and more.

The company is being formed underneath SpectreVision, Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s genre-bending production company. The company is kicking off its launch with a vinyl soundtrack for Netflix’s “Society of the Snow.” The LP features artwork from Mo Shafeek adorning the score from composer Michael Giacchino as well as liner notes from director J.A. Bayona.

Next up, Mutant will release vinyl for “Wonka” and is also teaming with Pressure Printing to...

‘The White Lotus’ Season 2 Finale Boosts HBO Series Into Nielsen U.S. Streaming Top 10
Image
Netflix had four titles with over 1B viewing minutes for the week of December 5 to December 12, according to Nielsen’s U.S. streaming charts.

Unsurprisingly, Wednesday was the top title of the week with another 3.3B minutes viewed. It far surpassed Firefly Lane, which was No. 2 on the list for the second week in a row with 1.4B minutes viewed. Bullet Train took third place, rising from No. 9 the week prior, with 1.34B minutes viewed — taking the spot from Dead to Me.

The first three episodes of Harry & Meghan debuted in fourth place with 1.26B minutes viewed.

A few other streamers were able to break into the Top 10, which is often dominated by Netflix. The White Lotus Season 2 finale managed to boost the series’ viewing on HBO Max by 37, according to Nielsen. That was good enough to earn the series No. 7 on the charts with 752M viewing minutes for the week.

How Florence And The Machine Co-Founder Isabella Summers Revved Up Into Film Scoring On Netflix’s ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ – Crew Call Podcast
Image
Here’s the downside to having an Oscar shortlist: Completely sidelining great contenders so early in the season.

One oversight by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Music branch this year was the “sexy and dangerous” original score, as the pic’s composer Isabella Summers puts it, of Netflix’s feature take on D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

And, yes, per Summers, Florence and the Machine is still together. As the British musician-turned-composer explains today on Crew Call, she was coming off a tour and got the chance to supply a song to indie pic Assassination Nation.

From there she was encouraged to make her foray into scoring, first working with Mark Isham on the Hulu limited series Little Fires Everywhere, on which they notched an Emmy nom for original dramatic limited series score. Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the first of four film scores by Summers to be unveiled.

‘They said I’m a badass and Hollywood needs me’: how Florence’s Machine took Tinseltown
Beyoncé
As the other half of Florence + the Machine, Isabella Summers plays stadiums and works with the likes of Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson. Now the film world can’t get enough of the musical sensation

On her Instagram account in 2020, Isabella Summers posted a screenshot of a question from the quizshow Pointless: “What is the nickname of Florence Welch’s musical collaborator, Isabella Summers? A) Magician B) Machine C) Maestro.” Underneath, Summers supplied her own answer: “All three, mother****ers”.

She wasn’t wrong. As the co-founder and keyboardist alongside Welch, she was the Machine. Still is, in fact. Despite her absence from this year’s Dance Fever album and tour, she hasn’t officially left the band – nor, it seems, officially explained her absence to Welch, but more on that later. Magician? Well, she may have written, produced and remixed tracks for Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson and Juliette Lewis, among many others,...

Kanye West, 50 Cent, Mick Jagger and Imagine Dragons Are Among Musicians Vying for Emmy
Image
The number and range of superstars vying for Emmys this year – everyone from Kanye West and 50 Cent to Mick Jagger and Imagine Dragons – is staggering.

More than 600 entries in the seven Emmy music categories were unveiled today as voting began for the nominations round. Nominations will be announced by the Television Academy on July 12.

The most star-studded category is that of best song. “Euphoria” star Zendaya and composer Labrinth, who won Emmys for the series in 2020, have entered two songs from this past season as co-writers and could score again given the huge popularity of the HBO series. Labrinth has also entered in the series-score category.

Country stars Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert are up for songs in “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Queer Eye,” respectively. Music docs are included too, as Sheryl Crow has entered a song from the new Showtime documentary on her life and Mary J. Blige...

Emmy Music Nominations Shut Out Superstars Like Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Cher and H.E.R.
Image
The TV Academy music branch is clearly not impressed by big names.

None of the superstars who entered the 2020-21 Emmy competition in the music categories — including H.E.R., Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Sara Bareilles, Dolly Parton and Cher — were rewarded Wednesday when the 73rd annual Emmy Award nominations were announced.

Rather, the majority of nominees in the seven music categories were largely familiar composers, songwriters, music directors and music supervisors within the scoring community.

The biggest musical names nominated were Marcus Mumford for the theme for “Ted Lasso,” Grammy president-ceo Harvey Mason Jr. for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” jazzman Branford Marsalis for a History Channel documentary, two-time Oscar winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for their hummable songs for “WandaVision,” and Tony winner Marc Shaiman for a song on a YouTube special.

Missing from Tuesday’s lists were songs for “Safety,” by H.E.R.; “Black Is King” by Beyoncé; both “Girls5eva...

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Composers Mark Isham & Isabella Summers Talk Moment Of Creative Breakthrough On Hulu Miniseries
Image
It took ample trial and error for composers Mark Isham and Isabella Summers to get to the heart of Little Fires Everywhere.

Created by Liz Tigelaar, the Hulu miniseries centers on a Shaker Heights matriarch and her family whose lives are upended, when a mysterious mother and daughter come into town. The drama called for a score that would “capture the essence of these women,” Summers says, who had become completely entangled with one another. “We had an intellectual description in mind. We wanted to embrace big rock drums, chamber strings. Burning piano had become a sound,” Isham adds. “I literally have a sample of a piano that’s been set on fire, which seemed apocryphal and cool.”

But to translate intellectual understanding into an emotional, sonic experience, the pair first had to learn how to work as collaborators. One of the driving forces behind English indie rock band Florence and the Machine,...

How Mary Ramos Musically Got Inside The Heads Of ‘Mrs. America’ & ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Characters – Crew Call Podcast
Image
She’s set the hip tone before the Bride’s bloody samurai battle in the House of Blue Leaves in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 1 with “Woo Hoo” from Japanese girl band The 5.6.7.8’s and she’s made Margaret Qualley’s hippie character Pussycat jump for joy to Neil Diamond’s “Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show” in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

During her 25-year-plus career, Mary Ramos has worked in various capacities as a music supervisor for Quentin Tarantino over a dozen movies, and this Emmy season she’s the music supervisor on Hulu’s Kerry Washington-Reese Witherspoon limited series drama Little Fires Everywhere and the Dahvi Waller-created FX limited series Mrs. America about the 1970s liberal feminist crusaders of the Equal Rights Amendment, i.e. Gloria Steinem, Brenda Feigen-Fasteau, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Azbug, and Betty Friedan and their conservative foe Phyllis Schlafly.

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ composer Mark Isham on blending strings with pop alongside Isabella Summers [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Emmy-winning composer Mark Isham infused a pop sensibility into his score for the Hulu limited series “Little Fires Everywhere,” which stars Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Composing the score with Florence + the Machine’s Isabella Summers, the pair blended their individual backgrounds to create something fresh. “There’s a lot of intricate string writing which is part of my background but there’s a very pop sensibility to the whole thing at the same time which she brought to it and then of course just fabulous drums and percussion,” Isham says in an exclusive new webchat with Gold Derby. “A great song, a great pop moment, is a very simple idea.” Watch the video interview above.

Starting with the main theme music, Isham wanted to create a sense of building momentum, not unlike how the series proceeds.
