As Mister John gets set for it’s UK theatrical release, we had the opportunity to sit down and discuss the forthcoming feature with its director – and married couple – Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy.
Mister John tells the story of Gerry (Aidan Gillen), who flies out to Singapore following his brother’s untimely death to take over his business and accompany his grieving family, where a crisis of identity ensues. Lawlor and Molloy discuss the casting of Gillen for the lead role, as well as how working so closely together affects their personal lives, while the former also tells us exactly what he thinks of Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln…

Joy is a popular college-age girl with a handsome boyfriend, loving parents, and many friends and band-mates. Helen’s the same age but an awkward, unsmiling outcast who’s grown up in an orphanage. Joy vanishes in a park one day, presumably the victim of foul play, and Helen is chosen to play Joy in a video reenactment the police are making in hopes of solving the case. Joy’s fate is replaced by the reality of Helen’s life and that is the premise of the new Irish film Helen, an interesting variation on the idea of duality that is hampered by a deliberately slow pace, wooden performances, and vague storytelling.

'Helen', the feature by Irish film making team Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, has scooped two awards at the Festival Premiers Plans in Angers France. 'Peacefire' produced by MayFly Entertainment also picked up an award. The Premier Plans Festival puts a spotlight on new European filmmakers with screenings of 100 first European films, presented in 5 competitive sections.Produced by Desparate Optimists, 'Helen' is based on a 17 year old girl who becomes mixed up in her own life and a police reconstruction that she is hired for. The film scooped the Prix Du Jury Long Metrage and lead actress Annie Townsend won the Prix Mademoiselle Ladubay Long Metrage.
