Exclusive: Republic Pictures has snapped up rights to The Image of You, a recently wrapped thriller starring Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars) in dual roles. Pic is set for release via Paramount Global Content Distribution at a date that hasn’t been disclosed.

Parker Young (United States of Al), Nestor Carbonell (The Morning Show), Michele Nordin (Justified) and Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino (Shining Vale) also star in the film from Mpca — an adaptation of the same-name novel from UK-based bestseller Adele Parks MBE, which Jeff Fisher (Killer Movie) directs from a script by Chris Sivertson (Monstrous).

The first project to emerge from a multi-picture deal between Mpca and Parks, The Image of You has Pieterse playing identical twins Anna and Zoe, who share a bond so close that nothing — and no one — can tear them apart. While Anna is romantic and trusting, her sister Zoe is daring and dangerous.

“Ivy and Bean” director Elissa Down gushed over working with “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, describing him as her “spirit animal,” at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Monday.

“We were shooting [during] a heat wave in Canada. The set was hot, but [Jesse] wasn’t waiting in his trailer — he came straight in and he goes, ‘I’ve got a joke to pitch,'” Down told Variety on the red carpet at Harmony Gold. “He just loves improvisation and he was such a generous actor.”

Based on the children’s book series by Annie Barrows, the upcoming film trilogy follows the adventures of unlikely best friends Ivy (Keslee Blalock) and Bean (Madison Skye Validum), from hunting down ghosts to enrolling in dance lessons. Ferguson plays ballet teacher Monsieur Joy in the third installment, “Ivy and Bean: Doomed to Dance.”

Lily James leads a cosy tale about a writer visiting a book club in the Channel Islands

This film’s semi-masticated mouthful of a title is a useful flag. Some will find the chintzy fussiness of it insufferable. To those people I say, trust your instincts. This film is not for you. Others, evidently individuals blessed with a higher tolerance of whimsy than I could ever dream of, will forgive the unwieldy word soup. But even fans of the source novel, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, might struggle with this photogenic but laboured adaptation.

The acting style is in large print; the plodding storytelling relies on large chunks of exposition. And while the Guernsey tourist board couldn’t hope for a better advertisement (the fact that it was largely shot in Cornwall and Devon notwithstanding), the growing passion between writer Juliet Ashton (Lily James) and Guernsey pig farmer...

While many readers from around the world feel a certain affinity to The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society, nervous about seeing how it’s been adapted for the big screen – nobody will feel that more than the novel’s co-author Annie Barrows, who we had the pleasure of meeting to celebrate the release of this production.

We ask Barrows about the importance in delving into the wartime setting from a female perspective, while also lingering on the notion of hope, and not death. She also tells us how she can’t help but be precious over the material she co-penned with her aunt Mary Ann Shaffer, and just how involved she was, if at all, during the film’s shoot.

She goes on to discuss her own passions in life, the last good book she read, and how she can struggle to view other pieces of literature without having her author’s hat on.

If your first instinct upon seeing the title “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” is to say, “Well, that’s a mouthful,” rest assured that Mike Newell’s film has you covered, for a secondary character does the very same. Indeed, pretty much everyone in this crumbly oatmeal biscuit of a movie does and says exactly what you’d expect of them: based not on the logic of real life, of course, but the cozy conventions of umpteen twee heritage Britpics before it. For Sunday-afternoon comfort-viewing purposes, it’s no problem that “Guernsey” — which follows the post-wwii escapades of a winsome London writer (Lily James) on the eponymous isle — doesn’t stray from its inevitable course as a town-versus-country love triangle. That it offers no surprises as a nominal wartime mystery, however, is rather more bothersome, particularly as what should be a perky trifle trudges past the two-hour mark.

Mike Newell made his name with a story of lovable English eccentrics in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and his latest mines a familiar seam of hot-toddy Britannia. Based on the posthumous novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece Annie Barrows, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society stars Lily James as Juliet Ashton, a writer on the promotional hustings in 1946 London. This evening the film destined to win the imaginary Oscar for Strangest Name for a Film had its World Premiere in London Town. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is based on Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’ best-selling novel, and is directed by Four Weddings and a Funeral and Harry Potter director Mike Newell.

The SVoD service has picked up rights for Us, Canada, Latin America, Italy, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, while Studiocanal will distribute in its territories the UK, Australia, New Zealand, France and Germany. The film has now sold out worldwide and the roll-out commences with Australia on April 19, the UK on April 20 and New Zealand on April 25, followed by France on June 13 and Germany on August 9.

Based on Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows's novel, the story follows a writer as she forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island in the aftermath of World War II when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war.

The likes of Kate Winslet, Lily James and Rebecca Ferguson have been attached to the project at one point or another. Don Roos adapted the script while Mitchell Kaplan and Paula Mazur are producing.

Actress Kate Winslet will have to wait another year to reunite with her Hamlet co-star Kenneth Branagh - their forthcoming war tale has been postponed until next year.

The Titanic beauty was due to begin shooting actor/director Branagh's next film, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, this spring, but the project has been delayed due to "continued casting and timing issues", according to a representative for Guernsey's Commerce and Employment Department.

And the movie's creative producer Paula Mazur is convinced the postponed schedule will work in the crew's favour.

She says, "It really is important to get the right cast on board... It (the delay) will also allow for the shoot to take place when the wild flowers and vegetation are at their best in Guernsey, which personally was my ultimate goal."

The movie is based on Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows' bestselling 2008 book, about a group of Guernsey islanders who outsmarted their German occupiers during World War Two.

The project is based on the novel by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Schaffer, which centers on a group of London residents who are displaced to the island town of Guernsey after World War II. Kate Winslet will portray a magazine columnist who begins corresponding with a man from Guernsey, and learns how they used the book club to outsmart the Germans occupying the island. The writer takes a journey to Guernsey, where her life is forever changed.

Don Roos (The Other Woman, The Opposite of Sex) is adapting the novel for Kenneth Branagh to direct from. Production is scheduled to begin in March.

Save for a few exceptions here or there, I don’t normally pay a lot of attention to what roles an actor ends up taking — unless they’re crashing and burning, a la Matthew McConaughey a couple of years ago. Kenneth Branagh is said to be interested in directing an adaptation of Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows' best-selling novel "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" at Fox 2000 reports Variety.

Set on a German-occupied island in the English channel during the Second World War, the story follows a group of eccentric locals who form a book club and how they come together and help each other during that difficult chapter in history.

Don Roos ("Marley & Me") penned the script. Branagh has also been attached to an adaptation of Henning Mankell's novel "Italian Shoes", and is slated to shoot the third season of "Wallander" for the BBC during the next few months.

Kenneth Branagh shocked superhero fans - as well as actor Chris Hemsworth - when he walked away from Marvel after directing its first Thor film.

It appears the thought of another long period at the helm of an FX-heavy blockbuster was too much and so Branagh amicably declined to be involved in the planned sequel.

We've all been wondering what he will do next, and it turns out that he is considering directing another film but this time on a smaller and more grounded scale.

Although I enjoyed Thor, I felt Branagh's influence was often lost beneath the need for visual spectacle and the overriding Marvel formula, where the demand for Avengers links often came at the expense of heart and soul.

Kenneth Branagh may have found his first directing gig since Thor. Variety reports that 20th Century Fox is circling the director to helm The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Dan Roos penned the script for the film, which will be produced by Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan.

The film is based on the Publishers Weekly and New York Times bestseller by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. Tale has been described "as a love story set in London and on the island of Guernsey shortly after WWII." Branagh is great with directing historical period films, so this is a great news. He will next be seen on the big screen as Sir Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn.

Thor director Kenneth Branagh has signed on to direct an adaptation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for Fox 2000.

The project is based on the novel by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Schaffer, which centers on a group of displaced London residents who settle in the island town of Guernsey in the English Channel after World War II. They start up a book club on Guernsey and write to a famous author who takes a journey to the island in 1946.

Don Roos is writing the screenplay adaptation for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. No production schedule was given for the drama at this time.
