‘Welcome To Chechnya’ wins three at virtual Thessaloniki Documentary Festival

David France’s Welcome To Chechnya has won a hat-trick of awards at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, which moved online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The film, which chronicles the ongoing anti-lgbtq persecution raging in the Russian republic of Chechnya, won the festival’s top prize – the Golden Alexander award – which comes with a cash prize of €15,000. It also won the Mermaid Award, presented to the festival’s best Lgbtqi-themed film, and the Fipresci prize.

Idfa: Female-Focused Fest to Open With Mehrdad Oskouei’s Iranian Prison Doc ‘Sunless Shadow’

Shoring up artistic director Orwa Nyrabia’s commitment to showcasing more women’s stories and platforming more women’s voices, Idfa has announced that this year’s festival features the highest percentage of female filmmakers in the event’s 31-year history: 64% of competition titles and 47% of the total program.

“Reaching a fairer representation was much easier than it seemed to be,” noted Nyrabia. “We only had to keep our goal in mind. The outstanding films that found their way to us this year was a humble reminder that we are in the presence of exceptional female filmmakers.”

The festival opens with the world premiere of Mehrdad Oskouei’s “Sunless Shadows,” which depicts five young Iranian women complicit in the murders of abusive husbands, fathers, or brothers-in-law. Themed programme to include discussions with 15 leading female directors including Kim Longinotto.

The International Film Festival Amsterdam (Idfa) is to investigates the role of women in documentary as part of its next edition (Nov 19-30).

The Female Gaze will comrise a programme of titles by women directors as well as discussions with filmmakers at the festival.

A total of 15 female directors, including Pirjo Honkasalo, Barbara Kopple and Kim Longinotto, have compiled a programme of old and new documentaries by themselves and others.

Idfa will also investigate the share female directors have had of the festival’s own selections during the past ten years, and attention will be devoted to the question of how women are represented in documentaries and of whether a ‘female gaze’ can be said to exist within the documentary genre.

The festival will organise a debate on the role of women for the documentary industry on Nov 22.

MoMA’s film exhibitions for June include a look at the influence of melodrama and soap opera on cinema, as well as some of Finland’s best documentaries.

Good to note is that the price of a film ticket may be applied toward the price of a Museum admission ticket with the presentation of the film ticket stub within 30 days of the date on the stub!
