Nickelodeon has ordered Wylde Pak, a new 2D-animated comedy series that follows the daily life of a blended multigenerational Korean American family. Set for premiere this summer, it is the second short from Nickelodeon’s Intergalactic Shorts Program to be greenlighted to series.

Unprisoned has been canceled.

On Friday (Sept. 27), star Kerry Washington announced that Hulu had canceled the series after two seasons.

“Ladies & Gents, that is a wrap on Unprisoned. This beautiful show that we poured so much of our hearts and souls into is unfortunately not coming back for a Season 3,” Kerry, 47, wrote on Instagram. “But I wanted you to hear it from me because while we’re super duper disappointed, we’re also crazy deeply grateful. Making this show was a labor of love. And we know that so many of you found connection and healing with The Alexander Family – and that their impact will live on!”

“UnPrisoned” has been canceled after two seasons.

The show aired as part of the Onyx Collective brand on Hulu. Series star Kerry Washington made the announcement on her official Instagram account.

“Ladies & Gents, that is a wrap on Unprisoned,” Washington wrote in part. “This beautiful show that we poured so much of our hearts and souls into is unfortunately not coming back for a Season 3. But I wanted you to hear it from me because while we’re super duper disappointed, we’re also crazy deeply grateful.”

“Thank you to Abcs, Hulu & Onyx for giving us a creative home,” she continued. “And most importantly, we are grateful to You All – for watching, laughing, crying, yelling, dancing, eye-rolling, cheering (and all of the things between) along with us each episode.”

This year, Toronto International Film Festival was back. TIFF typically kicks off the North American fall festival season alongside Telluride, but it has had a rocky past couple of years. The pandemic in 2020 put a temporary pause on in-person festivities, and 2021-2022 featured a tentative rollout of hybrid festivities. Though 2023 committed to total in-person attendance, the SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 limited the amount of American celebrity presence on the red carpet; festival buzz too had been similarly muted. This year’s edition, however, witnessed the famed festival in full swing. With 278 films in this year’s programming, the 2024 edition of TIFF was jam-packed with Berlin/Cannes favorites, Awards season’s to-be-darlings, and of course, a good chunk of independent cinema.

Review: K-Pops! Is a rather charming debut for rapper Anderson .Paak who directs and stars in this loving satire of the Korean pop industry. Like the character he plays, Bj, Paak is half-Korean, with the movie examining the culture clash as the very American drummer is dropped into the zany K-pop industry, I must admit to having no knowledge whatsoever of the industry, except that it’s gotten huge over the years, and seems to really be having a moment in North America. In fact, it’s not rare for me, in my weekly box office reports, to include K-pop concert movies on the chart, with them reliably big money makers as bands like BTS go worldwide.

Paak’s movie attempts to serve both newcomers to Korean pop and fans.

Eight-time Grammy Award-winning musician Anderson .Paak made a star-studded directorial debut at Toronto International Film Festival with “K-pops,” which played as a part of this year’s TIFF Special Presentations. The world premiere in the Princess of Wales Theater buzzed with excitement. Fans of the musician-director and K-Pop alike squealed at each and every celebrity appearance (of which were many), and greeted the film with a standing ovation. More important to .Paak, however, is the film’s heart. During the introduction, he noted that the film was inspired by his son, Soul Rasheed. He joked, “Sure, Soul knows about BTS, but does he know about BET?”

Just like the director’s personal history, “K-pops” is a perfect Blasian mix where Black and Korean music come together, rather than collide. Here, .Paak himself plays Bj, a biracial Los Angeles-based musician in desperate need of a lucky break.

Anderson .Paak strode into the Variety studio at Toronto Film Festival wearing a radiant smile, and before the cameras started rolling he began spinning a pillow on his finger like a basketball.

“This is a couch potato trick,” he laughed, as his 13-year-old son Soul Rasheed watched in awe.

It’s fitting that .Paak can’t keep his hands still. With a thriving music career (both as a solo artist and as one-half of the four-time Grammy winning duo Silk Sonic), a lucrative alter ego in DJ Pee Wee and a side hustle (if you can call that) as a restaurateur, .Paak is constantly adding items to his resume.

The latest of which is “K-Pops!,” .Paak’s first feature film, which he directed and acts in alongside Rasheed.

“It was kind of tough sometimes for me to turn off the dad and put on the director,” the 38-year-old multi-hyphenate told Variety.

Speaking exclusively with Perri Nemiroff in Colliders Media Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), American singer and rapper Anderson .Paak discussed his directorial debut K-Pops!, before teasing what fans might expect from Michel Gondrys upcoming musical flick Atlantis. K-Pops! is the musicians first foray into feature-length directing, having also collaboratively written the screenplay alongside Khalia Amazan. .Paak will star in the film alongside Jee Young Han, Soul Rasheed, Kevin Woo, and Yvette Nicole Brown, who is best known for the role of Shirley Bennett on the popular sitcom Community. The film follows a washed-up musician who reconnects with his son, seeking to capitalize on his success in hopes of revitalizing his own. The film premiered during a special presentation at TIFF on September 7, 2024.

The second season of UnPrisoned finds Paige, Edwin, and Finn still navigating their family dynamics in the aftermath of Edwin’s time in prison. Creator Tracy McMillan draws from her own experiences in crafting this moving portrait of a family striving to reconnect despite past mistakes and traumas.

Paige is a therapist who helps others while struggling to manage her own anxieties. Viewers see her vulnerable side through Kerry Washington’s nuanced performance. Edwin, too, is coping with his return to the outside, played brilliantly by Delroy Lindo. Their young son Finn deals with his own pressures, as portrayed with insight by Faly Rakotohavana.

This season sees the family reconnect while seeking counseling from an eccentric new therapist, John Stamos. His unorthodox methods create humor but also drive home challenging truths. Through it all, the heart of the show remains Paige, Edwin, and Finn’s commitment to healing old wounds together.

UnPrisoned is back for a second season of shenanigans, humor, heartfelt moments and more. The Hulu and Onyx Collective series debuted in March 2023 with eight episodes and high ratings for an Onyx Collective premiere.

Based on the life of creator Tracy McMillan, the series follows Paige Alexander (Kerry Washington) as she welcomes her dad Edwin (Delroy Lindo) back into her life after his release from 17 years in prison for dealing drugs. The last season began on Edwin’s release day, and the story continued because Paige decided to let him live with her and her teenage son Finneas (Faly Rakotohavana).

UnPrisoned, Hulu’s Onyx Collective dramedy starring Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo, has been renewed for Season 2, TVLine has learned.

Inspired by the life of creator Tracy McMillan and showrun by TV vet Yvette Lee Bowser (Living Single, Dear White People), UnPrisoned centers around the complicated relationship between family and marriage therapist Paige (Scandal‘s Washington) and her father Edwin (The Good Fight‘s Lindo) following his release from prison. The series premiered March 10 on Hulu with all eight episodes.

Kerry Washington has renewed her overall deal with ABC Signature — and will also continue with the studio’s Hulu dramedy UnPrisoned.

The streamer has picked up a second season of UnPrisoned, which stars Washington as a single mother whose world is upended when her father (Delroy Lindo) is released from prison and moves in with her and her son. The series comes from Disney’s Onyx Collective and ABC Signature; Washington and Lindo are also executive producers.

Under the renewed deal, Washington’s Simpson Street company will continue developing and producing TV projects for ABC Signature. Simpson Street has been based at the studio since 2016 and has previously produced Hulu’s limited series Little Fires Everywhere and Reasonable Doubt, which has been renewed for a second season.

“Kerry is the gold standard for a what a multihyphenate should be — passionate, prolific and endlessly kind,” said Tracy Underwood, executive vp creative affairs at ABC Signature.

Exclusive: Jee Young Han (Perry Mason) has been tapped for a major role in K-Pops!, the dramatic comedy marking the directorial debut of eight-time Grammy winner Anderson .Paak, in which he also stars opposite son Soul Rasheed.

Deadline reports that HBO has canceled Perry Mason after just two seasons, which is sure to upset fans as the recent season finale ended on something of a cliffhanger.

The drama series starred Matthew Rhys as Perry Mason, the iconic criminal defence lawyer. “We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement. “While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are excited to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.“

Perry Mason was executive produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey through their Team Downey banner. Just prior to the second season finale, Downey Jr. had discussed bringing the series back for a third season. “I mean wouldn’t that be nice?...

Exclusive: “I’ve always boiled it down to there’s something very simplistic to Mason,” Perry Mason star Matthew Rhys admits about the iconic and haunted lawyer he portrays on the HBO prequel series. “It’s not necessarily his sense of justice but sense of right and wrong,” the Emmy winner adds. “What is right and wrong, and how he goes about righting that, righting that wrong, is, at times, very questionable. But fundamentally, his sense of pure form justice is so strong that everything else becomes very difficult, and the playing of that was just magic.”

She’s an author, realtionship expert, TV writer and now the creator of “UnPrisoned,” a half-hour dramedy based on McMillan’s life adjusting to her now-late father re-entering her life after being freed from prison. The series stars Kerry Washington, who plays Paige, the “UnPrisoned” version of McMillan. While Paige’s father’s (Delroy Lindo) transition out of incarceration establishes the show, viewers eventually peel back even more layers of her life, which involves traumatic memories from prison visits and living in foster homes.

The cast of Hulu’s latest dramedy “Unprisoned” kept the family spirit alive at the show’s premiere at the Hollywood Legion Theater on Thursday night.

The show’s cast and crew — including Kerry Washington, Delroy Lindo, Faly Rakotohavana, Marque Richardson, Jee Young Han, Jordyn McIntosh, showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser and creator Tracy McMillan — examined what it means to be a “traditional” family on the red carpet before a screening of the first two episodes.

The series follows relationship therapist and single mom Paige (Washington), “whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad (Lindo) gets out of prison and moves to her house to live with her and her teenage son,” according to the show’s official synopsis.

“I wanted to show a family that every person in America would identify with, even though they’re facing very specific circumstances,” McMillan told Variety. “This is at its heart, a father-daughter story.

When you watch enough movies and shows, you start to pick up on certain little recurring trends. Chief among them has to be the instinct to create new adaptations of classic, pulpy characters ... but with a dark, brooding, and adult-only sheen layered on top.
