For most kids growing up in the 1990s, their first on-screen exposure to J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan would likely have been through Disney's 1953 animated adaptation. Disney takes on classic stories have tended to become the penultimate versions that audiences come to associate with the original tales themselves.

A Winnie the Pooh slasher film is getting the sequel treatment, and the newly-minted “Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu)” is getting its first major crossover event.
Just months after Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain in 2022, Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios made waves for producing Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a slasher film depicting A.A. Milne’s beloved characters of the Hundred Acre Wood as feral, blood-hungry killers. Despite very, very negative critical reception (it has a 3% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film made $5 million at the box office on a $50,000 budget, and led to other planned horror films featuring children’s characters now in the public domain like Bambi, Pinocchio, and the characters of Peter Pan.
Now, a grand cinematic crossover event with these characters is imminent: Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble will hit theaters in 2025. As reported by Variety, the Avengers-style low-budget horror crossover will see Winnie the Pooh join villainous forces with Bambi,...

Some perceive Peter Pan as evil, with a theory suggesting he murders his Lost Boys. The narrative paints Captain Hook in a more sympathetic light as Peter Pan's former friend turned resistive enemy. Disney embraced the evil Peter Pan theory in their ripoff-centered movie Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers.
One particularly dark Peter Pan theory asks, "is Peter Pan evil?" suggesting that the beloved Disney character may be a murderous villain. Peter Pan has been delighting Disney fans for generations since its initial release in 1953 and the story—originally written by J.M. Barrie—has been adapted numerous times. In practically every incarnation, Peter Pan is the hero of the story, and the recognized villain is almost always Peter's sworn enemy, the feared pirate Captain Hook. The story of Disney's Peter Pan is more child-friendly than Barrie's original story, but the general premise remains the same.

There’s a character in Disney’s self-mythologizing movie Wish whose life dream is to inspire the next generation. He lives in Rosas, the fictional kingdom ruled by the self-taught sorcerer Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine). For reasons that remain murky, the wizard hoards his constituents’ wishes in his castle tower. When residents of Rosas turn 18, they relinquish their greatest dream in hopes that one day their benevolent dictator will fulfill it. Magnifico, like all authoritarian leaders, insists that it’s a small price to pay for their safety and eternal peace of mind.
The whole premise is very Disney, and Wish plays out as one would expect. Magnifico meets his match in Asha (Ariana DeBose), a 17-year-old girl who dares to question the order of things. Their encounter represents the generational crossroads that Disney finds itself at during its centennial. In him, a symbol of authority and empire. In her,...

Disney Lorcana cards have different strategic focuses based on their ink color, with Amber highlighting support techniques and Steel emphasizing combat strength. Some of the most iconic Disney characters are also some of the most powerful and desirable cards in the game, with unique abilities that make them valuable in gameplay. Song cards also have strong abilities that can be deployed for free and can disrupt opponents' strategies.
Disney Lorcana features a wide variety of cards in its First Chapter lineup, but some of these stand out from the pack as particularly powerful in play. Like any collectible trading card game, cards can be desirable for a number of reasons, from the appeal of the artwork to the rarity of their distribution. At the game table, however, none of these aspects are as relevant as actual utility.

Back in 2017, Warwick Thornton landed in Venice with a western that offered some corrective to the white-savior narratives of countless others in the genre. Sweet Country, his third feature, chronicled the real-life story of an Aboriginal stockman arrested and tried for the death of a white ranch owner in 1920s Australia. Hardly the first to foreground racial tensions within a period setting, the film stood as a refreshing departure from others that only ostensibly acknowledged Indigenous peoples’ experience under colonialism, but wound up prioritizing the redemptive arcs of their white heroes. Six years later, along comes The New Boy, a film that shares the same ethos of its predecessor. Here, too, Thornton digs up a chapter of his country’s past to subvert and ultimately reappropriate the white man’s iconography: where Sweet Country took on the western, The New Boy tackles colonialism through the prism of the Church. But...

As a retelling of both J.M. Barrie’s novel and Disney’s 1953 animated classic, Disney+‘s Peter Pan & Wendy is a mixed bag. But as a retelling via director David Lowery, it’s totally on-brand.
The first half-hour of the 106-minute movie (streaming now on Disney+) suggests a beat-for-beat retread (à la Jon Favreau’s The Lion King), but Lowery’s quirky preferences permit a more offbeat take. And once Peter, Wendy et al reach Neverland, the story takes on new life.

As written by J. M. Barrie in his original 1904 play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up,” the century-old name Peter Pan has always been synonymous with a severe case of arrested development. More expressly, the fear of adulthood, the immature reluctance towards embracing the responsibilities and pains of being a grown-up, unable to gauge the earned rewards of such hardships.
So what could a 21st-century version of such arrested development look like? One that has something to say to today’s grown-ups both mesmerized and puzzled by a fiery younger generation vastly different than them, and today’s kids, being raised by an unprecedented sense of individuality? With “Peter Pan & Wendy,” soulful auteur David Lowery tries to find an answer with mixed results that’s fascinating and refreshing in parts and somewhat wearisome on the whole.

Peter Pan & Wendy debuted on Disney+ today and it is already dividing critics and audiences. The film, which is the latest live-action remake from Disney, is a retelling of the classic J.M. Barrie story that was originally adapted into the animated feature Peter Pan in 1953. This outing - which was directed by Pete's Dragon 2016's David Lowery - stars Jude Law as Captain Hook, Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell, Alexander Molony as Peter Pan, and Ever Anderson as Wendy Darling.

Disney's new live-action Peter Pan & Wendy ends a little differently than the original play, book, and 1953 animated film. In J.M. Barrie's original story (which was first a play and then a novel), Wendy decides to take the Lost Boys back home with her to London, England. Peter flies ahead of the group to bar the window, but changes his mind when he sees Mrs. Darling crying. The Darlings agree to adopt the Lost Boys and offer to adopt Peter, but he refuses. He does promise to return for Wendy every spring. An epilogue sees Peter returning for Wendy's daughter, Jane, and then Jane's daughter, and so on.
Disney's live-action Peter Pan & Wendy remake doesn't stray too far from the original book and play. The Lost Boys stay in London with Wendy, John, and Michael, and it's implied that the Darlings will adopt them. Peter and Wendy talk...

Disney refuses to let any stone go unturned when it comes to remaking its animated classics into live-action, so ahead of this May's The Little Mermaid, the Mouse House is slipping in an additional remake. Peter Pan & Wendy, which flies to Disney+ rather than theaters, aims to put a deeper, more grounded spin on the 1953 animated flick that was solely named after the male hero and based on J.M. Barrie's iconic written works. Director David Lowery (Pete's Dragon) brings a more mature sensibility to the tale of a boy who never wants to grow up, and it ultimately yields some mixed results. While Peter Pan & Wendy is strangely lacking some magic, it is saved by a scene-stealing Jude Law and a narrative that forces one to reckon with Peter's more negative traits.
Peter Pan & Wendy begins in a very familiar place: The nursery of three children living in Edwardian London.

With “Peter Pan and Wendy,” Disney sets out to bring the boy who refused to grow up into the 21st century — not literally, like those taxing live-action/cartoon hybrids, where computer-generated Smurfs get loose in Manhattan or Tom and Jerry wreak havoc in a high-end hotel. The studio’s latest remake is still set in Edwardian England, the way both J.M. Barrie’s play and the animated feature it inspired were. But the sensibility is very much of the moment, as director David Lowery (who did an admirable job of updating “Pete’s Dragon” for Disney) refreshes the 1953 classic according to contemporary priorities.

The question you may be asking is ‘do we really need yet another take on Peter Pan? Ever since J.M. Barrie published his book “Peter And Wendy” in 1911 there have been countless film, TV, and stage versions of one stripe or another, starting with silents, and of course NBC’s live musical in the 50’s with Mary Martin, and later versions with Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, and just a few years ago another NBC live attempt at it with Allison Williams. Of course there have been big screen spins, neither quite magical, like Joe Wright’s messy 2015 Pan and Spielberg’s overblown Hook with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. Up to this moment even Broadway has a new Tony contender in the farcical take, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. But for me the one version that resonates the most, to this day, is the Disney 1953 animated feature classic.

In the summer of 2016, writer/director David Lowery pulled off what feels like a magic trick in retrospect: he made a Disney remake that was actually quite good. His take on "Pete's Dragon" may not have set the box office aflame, but his tender approach to a story about an orphaned boy in the forest with only a mammoth dragon for a friend resulted in a low-stakes but wonderful family adventure. Of course, the major reason why "Pete's Dragon" worked so well as a remake is that it eschewed almost everything aside from the aforementioned logline that's present in the 1977 original, from big musical numbers to con-artist bad guys. And "Pete's Dragon" was able to eschew those aspects because while the original has some fans, it's by no means one of Disney's biggest titles.

American Idol season 21 is heading toward its finale, with less than a month to go before the new champion is crowned, and there are just six episodes left in the season. AI season 21 began with the auditions, during which the judges decided which contestants deserved tickets to Hollywood. Disney's latest live-action riff on a classic is "Peter Pan & Wendy," a new adaptation of the classic "Peter Pan" story. Ever since first taking center stage in J.M. Barrie's 1904 stage play, Peter Pan and the magical land of Neverland have captured imaginations all over the world. The whimsical story with a hint of darkness has inspired plenty of movies, plays, and books over the years, each with a slightly different take on the Boy Who Never Grew Up. Here's a brief look back at all of the notable movie adaptations and how they each made the Neverland mythos their own.
"Peter Pan" (1924)
The first authorized movie adaptation of "Peter Pan" was this silent film version, starring Betty Bronson as Peter Pan, Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook, Mary Brian as Wendy Darling, and Virginia Brown Faire as Tinker Bell. J.M. Barrie personally worked on a screenplay for this one,...

Fans of Enchanted have finally gotten the sequel they’ve waited years for, Disenchanted, courtesy of the streaming-waves of Disney+. Both Enchanted and its sequel used every opportunity to deconstruct the familiar tropes and conventions of traditional fairy tales. Since fairy tales are some of the oldest and most well-worn stories ever told, they’re ripe for satire.
From Shrek to Hook to The Princess Bride to The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, plenty of beloved fantasy movies have poked fun at the time-tested traditions of the fairy tale genre.
Disenchanted (2022)
Fans have waited for over a decade to see a sequel to Disney’s fairy tale parody Enchanted, and the Mouse House has finally delivered that sequel. In Disenchanted, Princess Giselle disrupts the balance between the real world and her old animated kingdom.
Instead of just rehashing the formula from the first film like most sequels, Disenchanted puts a fresh...

Disney's D23 Expo is currently underway, returning fully-fledged for the first time since before the pandemic. That means that Disney is bringing out the big guns and making a big show, not just for those in attendance, but for those of us at home as well. During the Disney and Pixar presentation, we were treated to the first look at one of the upcoming live-action remakes of an animated classic in the form of "Peter Pan & Wendy."
This, much like the recent "Pinocchio" live-action remake, is looking to update a familiar story for the Disney+ era. David Lowery ("The Green Knight") is in the director's chair for this one, which makes it an instantly intriguing prospect. So, what does a Lowery live-action "Peter Pan" movie look like? /Film's own Ethan Anderton was on hand at the convention to preview the footage.

Weekend Box Office

As expected, Hop continued to dominate the box office over the weekend with an estimated $21.6 million take. It should continue to do well over the next few weeks as the holiday approaches.
Meanwhile, Arthur, Russell Brand's other effort, opened to a disappointing $12.6 million - well under the projected $18 million from the studio. This may lead to the end of Hollywood's love affair with Brand as he just doesn't seem to be leading man material as he can't open a movie. His Get Me to the Greek opened to $17.5 million and it was rated R - Arthur's PG-13 should have helped the film reach a broader audience but for once taste prevailed and moviegoers decided to pass. Studios will probably think twice before...

Predicted Weekend Box Office
Hop $23 millionArthur $16 millionYour Highness $12 millionSource Code $10 millionHanna $7 millionInsidious $6.6 millionLimitless $6.3 millionDiary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules $5 millionThe Lincoln Lawyer $4.5 millionSoul Surfer $3.4 million
I hope you are a Russell Brand fan because he's likely to take the two top spots at the weekend box office. His turn as the reluctant Easter Bunny in Hop should be able to retain its winning streak for another week. Family films often don't suffer the same box office drop week to week since the audiences for such fare aren't as likely to show up opening weekend. It's projected to be on top of the heap with around $23 million.
Russell Brand is also starring, this time in the flesh not just the voice, in the remake of Arthur. This remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore/Liza Minnelli chestnut has reviewers asking "Why" and me very angry because why doesn't Liza even have a cameo in this?...

Former DC Comics and Marvel comic book artist Chris Walker gives us a inside perspective on fanboy culture with Anti-Matter, an original web series comedy "about a NY comic store, its staff, and the regulars that drive them crazy." The series, starring Jill Butterfield, Christina Calph, Shannon Coffey, Kaite Johnson, Julie Katz, Aaron Kheifets, Pedro Lee, Kirstan Perry, Davram Stiefler, Justin Tyler, and Walter Vincent, is written and directed by Walker, who produces Anti-Matter on nights and weekends out of real-world New York comic book store Jim Hanley's Universe. “The basis for the humor in Anti-Matter is that as a comic fan, you’re hanging out with your buds and probably being an ass at someone’s place of business,” Walker told Wired.com. “I know because I was that guy. I’d come by Hanley’s and talk smack on new comics every Wednesday with everyone in the store right up until closing,...

A picture has been released by Splash News of Russell Brand in full costume and make-up from the NYC set of Arthur, a remake of the 1981 comedy which starred Dudley Moore as Arthur and Liza Minnelli as Linda.
And yes, he has no hair on that English face of his. It feels so weird seeing him looking clean shaven and serious, but that’s before we know what his role is.
Brand plays a jubilant drunk that lacks ambition in life, sounds a bit like Aldous Snow if you ask me. Much of this demeanor has to do with the fact that he is vastly wealthy and the heir to a large fortune. But there is some fine print that goes along with the inheritance and that is that Arthur must marry the ‘Susan’ character, played by Jennifer Garner, in order to get it.

"When you're an actor, I feel like you're always putting yourself out there, and you're doing everything to become that person or that character," actor-model Lauren Francesca says of her approach to onscreen comedy. "So it's really not about 'Are people going to make fun of me?' It's more 'Am I going to make people laugh? Is it going to be a funny video that people are going to enjoy?' "When Francesca saw a casting notice for "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" at BackStage.com, she applied immediately to be a backup dancer for the show's parody hip-hop music video. "It's 'The Daily Show,' and I was pretty confident that it was going to be a great video," she says. "It was really cool. I got books thrown on my head."Francesca was cast as a dancer in the video "Still a Boss," the second...
