In celebration of its 10th anniversary in 2025, Jane Tranter‘s production firm Bad Wolf (Doctor Who, His Dark Materials) is launching the Blaidd Writers Program, a “rolling six-month paid development and training initiative to find and nurture the next generation of Welsh drama writers, in association with Screen Alliance Wales.” Participants will be mentored by screenwriters Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, National Treasure), Russell T. Davies (Doctor Who, It’s A Sin) and Marnie Dickens (Gold Digger, Wilderness)

The scheme, unveiled Tuesday, will see three writers develop, with Bad Wolf, an original, contemporary Wales-set returning drama. They will also take part in master classes with industry professionals, including the co-creators of HBO and BBC’s hit drama Industry, Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, and screenwriter and In My Skin creator Kayleigh Llewellyn.

Channel 4 has opened its Edinburgh TV Festival commissioning roster with a comedy about a hotshot director who scours the country for everyday people who have an idea for a feature film. Laced into the scripts of Amazon Prime Video’s new limited series “Wilderness” are the blueprints of a vast revenge saga set against the backdrop of America’s National Parks. But among those finer points, writer and creator Marnie Dickens also embedded the songs she envisions playing alongside the action. A curated playlist for retribution, if you will.

Based on the book by B.E. Jones, “Wilderness” follows Liv (Jenna Coleman), a British expat living in New York City, who learns her charming husband Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) has been having an affair essentially since they touched down on American soil. Shaken by the resurfaced trauma of her father’s own infidelity, Liv begins plotting to kill her husband when they embark on a delayed honeymoon road trip through America’s natural wonders like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon.

The opening shot of Amazon’s Wilderness features a disproportionately huge spider — probably, for thematic reasons, a black widow, but I’m not an arachnologist — tentatively starting across a stretch of asphalt leading out to a picturesque Southwestern vista.

So why did the black widow cross the road?

We’ll never know, because within two seconds, the spider is squished — don’t worry, representatives of People for the Ethical Treatment of Spiders, it’s clearly CG — by the powder-blue vintage Ford Mustang carrying Liv (Jenna Coleman) and Will (Oliver Jackson-Cohen).

Reader, I laughed. Hard. At least half of why I chose to review this six-episode adaptation of B.E. Jones’ novel is because the opening five seconds portended something appealing pulpy and silly, perhaps in a good way.

It’s no accident that Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” plays over the opening credits of Prime Video’s new limited series Wilderness. The song, which appears in its rerecorded version, came at the suggestion of writer-producer Marnie Dickens, who felt that the vengeful lyrics mirrored the show’s storyline perfectly.

“Marnie wrote that song into the script for Episode Two, but then Prime asked Marnie if there was a young female artist she wanted [over the credits],” recalls So Yong Kim, who directed all six episodes. “Of course she said Taylor Swift.

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of U.K. public broadcaster BBC, has taken full ownership of Firebird Pictures, the scripted production company set up by former BBC executives Elizabeth Kilgarriff and Craig Holleworth in 2019.

BBC Studios previously held a 25 percent stake in the company and has now increased its investment to buy the rest for 100 percent control. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Firebird “works with and champions top-level and emerging talent to create high-end character-led series for British and international audiences,” the company said. “It has recently had two major series green-lit: Wilderness, a six-part series for Amazon Prime Video, written by Marnie Dickens and based on B.E. BBC Studios has taken full control of Firebird Pictures, the British drama indie behind Prime Video’s Wilderness and BBC One’s Wahala.

The BBC’s commercial arm already had a stake in the company, which former BBC execs Elizabeth Kilgarriff and Craig Holleworth run together.

Firebird now sits in a stable of BBC Studios indies that include Gentleman Jack firm Lookout Point, Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow Productions, Sherwood maker House Productions, The End of the F*cking World indie Clerkenwell Films and Killing Eve‘s Sid Gentle Films. The BBC also has minority stakes in the likes of Various Artists Limited, Expectation, Curve and Mothership Productions and is backing YouTuber Joe Suggs’ new venture Final Straw Productions.

Malachi Kirby (Small Axe) has been set to play the dual leading roles of brothers Charles Nancy and Spider in Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s bestselling novel Anansi Boys.

The six-part show will begin filming in Scotland later this year. Delroy Lindo is also in the cast as Mr Nancy. Gaiman and Lenny Henry will write for the series. Hanelle M.Culpepper will direct the pilot. Gaiman and Douglas Mackinnon will serve as co-showrunners.

Exclusive: Numan Acar, who appears in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far from Home, is set to play opposite Sam Worthington and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Seacole, the Charlie Stratton-directed indie based on the true-life story of Mary Seacole.

Acar was most recently seen in Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake and is currently shooting the last season of Homeland after spending four seasons on the Showtime series.

Seacole follows Mbatha-Raw as Mary Seacole, a pioneering Jamaican nurse who became known during the Crimean War for her care of wounded British soldiers. Seacole’s self-sacrifice on the front lines and fierce, adversarial relationship with Florence Nightingale during the war made her famous in her time.

Acar will play The Pasha, a high-ranking officer in the Turkish army, a lover not a fighter who helps Mary build her hotel.

Sylvia Hoeks and Sean Delaney also co-star.

Producer Billy Peterson has formed a new production company, Racing Green Pictures, and announced production on “Seacole,” his first feature with the banner.

Former Ink Factory partners Alexei Boltho and Rhodri Thomas, executive producers on The Night Manager, launched TV and film banner Ray earlier this year.

At Tessa Ross and Juliette Howell’s film and TV indie House Productions, Phillips worked with writers and directors such as Sean Durkin, Peter Straughan, Clio Barnard and Rebecca Lenkiewicz. She previously held posts at See-Saw Films, Film4 as Creative Executive and WestEnd Films as Head Of Development and Acquisitions.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw will star in the humanitarian drama “Seacole,” based on the life of pioneering Jamaican nurse Mary Seacole, Variety has learned exclusively.

Charlie Stratton will direct from a screenplay he’s written with Oscar-nominated Dianne Houston (“Tuesday Morning Ride”) and Marnie Dickens. The project is to be co-produced and financed by Epic Match Media and UMedia. Producers are Brunson Green (“The Help”), Hilary Shor, Peter Bevan (“Mandy”), Karl Richards, and Billy Peterson of Epic Match.

The Exchange will introduce “Seacole” to buyers at next month’s European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival.

Seacole became known during the Crimean War for her care of wounded British soldiers, described in her 1857 autobiography “Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands.” The film will focus on the action on the Crimean battlefield, Seacole’s desire to work with Florence Nightingale, and her dedication to care for the British soldiers during and after the war.

Backed by Endeavor Content and MediaNet Partners the company will develop, finance and produce for film and TV but will focus on scripted drama.

The London and La-based company’s first projects include a feature film adaptation of John Boyne’s novel, A Ladder to the Sky, with filmmakers to be announced shortly, and a Tokyo-set TV series, Occupied City, written by Ben Hervey (Taboo) from the novel by David Peace. Currently casting is feature film Aquarium adapted from David Vann’s book by Marnie Dickens (Gold Digger), to be directed by debut feature director Lauren Caris Cohan and set to star Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle).
