The glory days of peak TV, of blank cheque commissioning, open-ended series orders and blockbuster budgets, are well and truly behind us. But even with buyers tightening their purse strings, there’s still a hunger, and with the every-expanding global streaming market, a continually-growing demand for top-notch drama.
Ahead of MIPCOM Cannes — the number one global television market which runs October 21-24 — the supply side of the scripted business is also looking strong. From big-budget period pieces to quirky indie gems, from glossy period pieces to gritty urban drama, the offerings this year are broad and deep.
Budget constraints mean there will be fewer moon-shot deals at this year’s MIPCOM — proceedurals, thrillers and star-driven projects will have an edge over riskier, niche-focused fare — but for producers who know how to crunch the numbers, there is business to be done.

Outrageous is the story of six aristocratic sisters who refused to play by the rules, their often scandalous lives making headlines worldwide. Set against the gathering storm clouds of the 1930s, masked by the decadence, frivolity, and lavishness of British high society, Outrageous will bring the full, uncensored story of the Mitford sisters to the screen for the first time – a story of family bonds and betrayals, public scandal, political extremism, love, heartache, and even imprisonment.

Eleanor Coppola, who won an Emmy for the Apocalypse Now documentary Hearts of Darkness, directed Paris Can Wait and Love Is Love Is Love and was married to Francis Ford Coppola for 61 years, died Friday at her home in Rutherford, CA. She was 87.
She also is the mother of Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola and American Zoetrope president Roman Coppola.
Eleanor Coppola won an Emmy and a DGA Award for helming Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, the 1991 documentary about the making of her husband’s seminal Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now. The production of that 1979 classic – which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar – was plagued by problems related to budget, casting, script, the weather – a typhoon destroyed much of the set – and even an active insurgency in the Philippines, the battle with which pulled away helicopters on loan from the government.

Goodrem and Joshua Sasse lack chemistry as ‘opposites attract’ lovers jetting around tropical Queensland

Love is in the Air marks Delta Goodrem’s first film role since the 2005 high school dramedy Hating Alison Ashley, in which she plays a Sandy Olsson-esque student with holier-than-thou vibes. Goodrem is more salt of the earth and more bloody Strayan as a seaplane pilot in Netflix’s very corny and saccharine romance: a galumphing heffalump of a movie that is best – and perhaps only – enjoyed by devotees of the Sydney-born performer. Most audiences will emerge from this formulaic and hammily acted production feeling like they’ve inhaled a block of cheese the size of a car battery.

Three years into its local production effort in Australia and New Zealand, Netflix has greenlighted two new series, one feature film and one full-length documentary from Australia.
These are in addition to previously announced renewals of teen series “Heartbreak High” and “Surviving Summer” and the go-ahead for prestige book-to-series adaptation “Boy Swallows Universe” and kids animation “Eddie’s Lil Homies.”
Set in the Australian Outback, epic succession tale “Desert King” revolves around billionaire miners, traditional owners, cowboys and desert gangsters fighting over the world’s biggest cattle station the size of Wales. It’s a hot, dusty, sexy Outback Western with guns and helicopters.
It is directed by Greg McLean and created by Tim Lee and Ben Davies, with production by Paul Ranford. The series is a co-production between Easy Tiger and Ronde.

Fox needs new successful drama series. Last season, the renewals of some of the network's highest-rated drama series, came down to the wire. The network doesn't own them, so there's less profit. Monarch, however, is fully owned by Fox Entertainment, so even if the ratings aren't the best, this show could have a financial advantage when renewal time comes around. Will Monarch be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

Created by Melissa London Hilfers, the musical drama revolved around Dottie (Susan Sarandon) and Albie Roman (Trace Adkins), the heads of a country music empire, and their daughter Nicky Roman (Anna Friel), who does all she can to protect the family’s reign in country music while ensuring her own stardom. The drama also starred Joshua Sasse, Beth Ditto, Iñigo Pascual, Meagan Holder, Eva Amurri, Emma Milani, and Martha Higareda. It featured guest appearances...

Fox’s first-year series Monarch is finished.
The network canceled the family drama set in the world of country music after a single season. The show’s season — now series — finale aired Tuesday night.
Monarch had initially been slated to premiere in January 2022 with the NFL’s NFC championship game as its lead-in. A few weeks before its debut, however, Fox pulled the show from that spot and moved it to the fall, citing pandemic-related concerns that production might be interrupted.
It premiered following an NFL telecast Sept. 11 and pulled in decent ratings but was unable to keep that audience once it moved to its regular time period on Tuesday nights. Monarch was designed to have a shorter run than shows like 911 or its lead-in The Resident, but it was also Fox’s first fully owned scripted series since the network split...

“Monarch,” the country music drama starring Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins, has been canceled after one season on Fox, IndieWire has confirmed.
The show will not return for a second season and will end after Tuesday night’s season – now series – finale.
“Monarch” aimed to be a soapy character drama in the vein of “Nashville” about The Romans, billed as the first family of country music who have built a recording dynasty across generations. But when their dynasty’s reign is put in jeopardy, the family’s matriarch Nicolette Roman (Anna Friel) stops at nothing to restore their family’s legacy.
And though the season premiere was Fox’s most-watched scripted series debut in three years, seen by 3.8 million viewers with a 0.8 score in the key demo, its remaining 10 episodes struggled and averaged far below that initial high mark. The premiere got a big bump following an NFL double header...

“Monarch’s” Luke Roman (Joshua Sasse) found himself dealing with a diva situation in last week’s episode of the Fox country music drama, when backstage at his mother’s memorial service, Shania Twain (playing herself) refused to perform. Twain didn’t want to hit the stage because she and the late Dottie Roman (Susan Sarandon) were frenemies after – in this universe – Dottie stole “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.”
“Your mother was never nice to me. Bitch stole my song,” Twain quipped to Sasse’s character Luke. And the whole scene ended up being a very unique experience, Sasse said.
“It was hilarious. It was just fantastic,” Sasse told TheWrap. “We didn’t really talk before we went in, she’d just flown in from Switzerland, where she lives. And as the day happened, I was already in the dressing room waiting for it to happen, and so we...

Fox kicked off a country music game of thrones on Sunday with a sneak peek at the premiere of Monarch, a twisted family drama where the only thing bigger than the hair… are the secrets.
Episode 1 introduces viewers to the Romans, the self-described “first family of country music,” led by egomaniac Dottie (Susan Sarandon) and her husband Albie (Trace Adkins), who’s basically the human equivalent of a dirt road. On the surface, Dottie and Albie have the perfect life, assuming you look past her terminal cancer diagnosis, his history of cheating, and the fractured relationships they’ve cultivated with their understandably screwed-up kids.

Fox heads to the heart of Texas on Sunday night, blending country music with family squabbles and raw ambition in its new primetime drama “Monarch.”
Debuting the first of its two-episode premiere right after the Fox NFL doubleheader, “Monarch” follows the Roman family members as they strive to maintain their first family of country music status, established by matriarch Dottie Cantrell Roman (Susan Sarandon) and Albie Roman (Trace Adkins).
“So the original inspiration was I thought, ‘What if I reimagined the Romanov dynasty as a family of country stars in Austin, Texas?’” executive producer and creator Melissa London Hilfers told TheWrap of the show’s inspiration. “And I wanted it to be a big, opulent, multi-generational drama.”

Shania Twain is still the one. On the new Fox drama Monarch, premiering Sept. 11, Twain and fellow country superstars Martina McBride, Tanya Tucker and Little Big Town make guest appearances as themselves throughout the season. Monarch stars Susan Sarandon as fictional country music legend Dottie Cantrell Roman, the head of the powerful Roman family whose scandalous dealings in and outside of the music industry are the talk of Nashville. While working with Sarandon—and an ensemble cast featuring Trace Adkins, Anna Friel and Beth Ditto—provided the bulk of the juicy drama, for Joshua Sasse, who plays Dottie's son and the CEO of Monarch Entertainment Luke Roman, it...

It’s more a public service than a spoiler to reveal that no matter how Fox is promoting the show, polarizing Oscar winner Susan Sarandon is truly not the primary star of the new musical soap opera Monarch.
Armed with this knowledge, everybody comes out ahead. Sarandon haters can tune into Monarch without fear of an excess of Susan Sarandon; Sarandon fans, the real winners here, can safely skip Monarch entirely.
Although it obviously and rather desperately wants to be Empire only with country music, Monarch is actually just protracted mediocre karaoke. Any karaoke aficionado can tell you that mediocre karaoke is the worst karaoke of all. Bad karaoke is drunken, trashy fun. Great karaoke is entertaining and musical. Mediocre karaoke? It’s that movie with Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis. (Duets. It’s called Duets.) And Monarch wishes it was even that good.

Dottie Cantrell Roman and Albie Roman, played by Sarandon and Trace Adkins, are the parents to three children, two of them rival vocalists (Anna Friel and Beth Ditto); Dottie and Albie’s son (Joshua Sasse) must try to...

Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Little Big Town and Tanya Tucker are headed to Fox’s new country music soap, “Monarch”, it was announced Wednesday.
The country music stars will all make special guest appearances throughout the upcoming musical drama’s first season.
“Monarch”, which debuts Sunday, Sept. 11, follows the Roman family, headed by the talented but tough-as-nails “queen of country music” Dottie Cantrell Roman (Susan Sarandon) and her husband, “Texas Truthteller” Albie Roman (Trace Adkins).
Dottie and Albie have created a country music dynasty, but even though the Roman name is synonymous with authenticity, the very foundation of their success is a lie. When their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, heir to the crown Nicolette “Nicky” Roman (Anna Friel) will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy, while ensuring her own quest for stardom.

In the trailer for the new series, which stars Susan Sarandon as fictional country music superstar Dottie Cantrell Roman, the Nashville icons—who seem to be playing themselves—appear alongside regular cast members, which also include Trace Adkins, Anna Friel, Beth Ditto and Joshua Sasse. Monarch follows Dottie and her husband Albie Roman (Adkins) as they build a country music empire—but the rise to the top is filled with enough drama to fill a ten gallon hat. "I...
