Many medical dramas have attempted to replicate the success of Grey's Anatomy and ER. Many have failed, not coming nearly as close to the popularity that both series reached (with Grey's Anatomy still being renewed for more seasons to this day). They've set the standard, one that's tough to achieve and consists of a combination of great acting, excellent storytelling, and a loyal audience. This year, several medical dramas had close premieres, each vying for the attention of lovers of the genre. While Max's The Pitt has been the most popular, Fox's Doc, NBC's Brilliant Minds, and CBS' Watson have all snagged renewals, too. Netflix's Pulse, on the other hand, has received mixed reviews since its premiere on the streamer on April 3, 2025, and its fate has now been sealed.
According to Deadline, Pulse won't get another chance to prove critics wrong as the Netflix original has been cancelled after one season.

Netflix's first-ever original medical procedural has officially flatlined. Deadline announced today that Pulse, which premiered back in April, has been canceled after one season on the platform despite some modest streaming success. According to the report, the series's time of death actually came about a month ago, with the cast and crew already given the freedom to start pursuing other projects. It's just one of three Netflix originals given the bad news today, with comedic murder mystery show The Residence also axed after its inaugural run and No Good Deed put on hold with the potential for a new season for the darkly comedic anthology series sometime in the future.
From the beginning, Pulse was facing headwinds as it dropped in the shadow of a sea of new medical dramas, all of which were picked up for sophomore seasons. Of those shows, hype was still at a high for...

Netflix has canceled a pair of first-year series, The Residence and Pulse.
The two shows both premiered in the spring and had four-week runs in Netflix’s internal, worldwide top 10 rankings, with The Residence lasting a bit longer than than in Nielsen’s U.S. streaming charts. As usual, Netflix does cost-benefit analysis in making renewal or cancellation decisions.
The Residence is a White House-set murder mystery starring Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp, the “greatest detective in the world.” The series hails from Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland and creator/showrunner Paul William Davies (Scandal). Had the series gone forward, the plan was for it to become an anthology with Cupp taking on a new case each season.
The cast for the first (and now only) season also features Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Edwina Findley, Bronson Pinchot, Mary Wiseman, Julieth Restrepo, Al Mitchell, Mel Rodriguez, Ken Marino, Jason Lee and Jane Curtin,...

Freshman Netflix shows “Pulse” and “The Residence” have both been canceled, Variety has learned. Both series aired just one season at the streamer.
“Pulse” premiered on April 3 and debuted with 6.5 million views on the Netflix Top 10, followed by 8.5 million, 3.2 million and 2 million views in the weeks after that. The series received a ratings of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety’s review noting “a poorly formatted narrative, an appalling depiction of sexual harassment and a few insufferable characters [that] don’t exactly make for a pleasurable watch.”
The series also suffered due to the proximity of its premiere to the finale of “The Pitt” at Max, with the latter medical drama scoring much higher with critics and audiences alike.

Grey's Anatomy is not only a pioneer in the medical drama genre but also the longest-running scripted primetime show. It was recently renewed for one more season. Naturally, more competitors, including Netflix, are trying to replicate its success.
Grey's Anatomy led to other recent popular medical dramas like The Good Doctor and The Resident. Now, Netflix has added its own version called Pulse to the mix, with the show having premiered on April 4. Although the medical drama didn't have the best reviews when it began, according to Tudum, the serieshas attracted enough viewers to become a streaming hit. Although it only had two days to make an impact for the week between March 31 and April 6, Pulse debuted in the charts at number three globally, attracting 6.5 million views, with 52 million hours viewed.

After four days of watching Netflix's new medical drama series, critics and viewers have a prognosis, and it's not looking good. Pulse had a lukewarm debut on Thursday, April 3, when the entire season dropped on Netflix. "The biggest issue with Netflix's Pulse is its lack of identity," said Collider's Isabella Soares in her review. A new score on Rotten Tomatoes reveals that it's on the decline, currently sitting at a 47% critic score and 46% audience score. Some things are rare on the review aggregator, including an almost identical critic and audience score. Typically, each party sees things differently, but with Pulse, there is a shared one. The show had been likened to Grey's Anatomy before it premiered, but they couldn't be different, with Grey's Anatomy's score double that of Pulse.
Hailing from Zoe Robyn and Carlton Cuse, Pulse shows what happens when Miami's busiest Level 1 hospital faces a natural disaster.

The new medical drama series from Netflix has been teased as having some resemblance to the early years of Grey's Anatomy. While this made for some promising hype, the show has been met with a disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score — and the audiences agree.
Currently, Netflix's Pulse has an approval rating from critics of 47%. The rating is equally matched by the audience score on the Popcornmeter, which is tied at 47%. It's clear that the show is polarizing, and while it's been getting some praise, there are enough reviews to firmly make the series considered "rotten" by the review aggregator website. Some critics have verified that the series is reminiscent of Grey's Anatomy, and while THR critic Angie Han felt that the show wasn't perfect, it shows a lot of promise, resulting in a positive review.
"[Resembles Grey's Anatomy] with its mix of medical drama and soap operatics," Han wrote in a review.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Pulse” Episode 10.
“Pulse” may have kicked off with a big focus on the complicated romance between Danny Simms and Xander Phillips, and by the end of Season 1 the messiness between them seemed to fade into the background thanks to a long-awaited apology and an admission of guilt.
After Danny (Willa Fitzgerald) rescinded her sexual harassment claim against her ex, her future at the hospital remained under threat by Xander’s (Colin Woodell) influential parents, who hoped to get her out of their son’s way. When Danny confronted the disgruntled parent of a patient of her sister Harper’s (Jessy Yates), Natalie Cruz (Justina Machado) told Danny that she now had cause to fire her from the residency program.
Natalie faced pressure of her own: either fire Danny or give up control of the hospital’s emergency room. In the end she chose her pupil,...

Netflix’s new medical drama Pulse immediately brings viewers into the world of Maguire Medical with two major developments: a catastrophic hurricane and the show’s main character Danny (Willa Fitzgerald) having filed a sexual harassment claim against chief resident Phillips (Colin Woodell).
“It’s perfect to start us off with this season because we have the stakes already as high as we think they can go from the jump,” Fitzgerald tells The Hollywood Reporter of the show’s choice to drop viewers in the middle of a literal hurricane.
“Something that I really love about this show is that from the first episode to the last, your understanding of these characters and what they’re experiencing radically changes,” she adds. “Our understanding of [Danny] becomes so much more complicated over the course of the 10 episodes. For over 20 years, Grey's Anatomy has dominated as the most popular medical drama and one of the most popular drama shows ever. As a result, any new medical drama is benchmarked against it. Shows in this category are seeing a resurgence as streaming platforms develop their takes on it, and for Netlflix, that comes in the form of Pulse. Set in Miami's business Level 1 Trauma Center, the show explores the challenges of the medical field amid workplace drama. Even if the creators don't want that, Pulse has been compared to Grey's Anatomy. However, the show has not received as much acclaim from critics or the audience. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Pulse Season 1 has earned a measly 53% critic score. The audience side is not better at just 54% percent. The show has brought critics and viewers together, who normally don't see things from the same perspective. In contrast, Grey's Anatomy...

Twenty years ago, “Grey’s Anatomy” opened with the premise: What if a pretty surgical intern hooked up with her hot neuro attending and romance ensued? “Pulse,” a new medical drama created by Zoe Robyn, attempts a twist on this premise: What if a resident hooked up with her chief … and then she accused him of sexual harassment?
It’s a compelling spin on a problematic trope (work romance between people with a significant gap in power dynamic), but does it work? The answer is: Sort of.
Created by Zoe Robyn with Carlton Cuse as co-showrunner, Netflix’s “Pulse” drops us in the midst of two separate storms. One is the very literal Hurricane Abby, which is about to hit Miami’s fictional Maguire Medical Center. The other is the revelation that Maguire’s chief resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is being investigated over the harassment claims made by his underling,...

Medical dramas just aren't meant for network TV anymore. With series like The Pitt garnering solid reviews and dominating the Max streaming service, a crisis in the medical field doesn't just need to be told on ABC or CBS. Not one to be left out of the game, Netflix has premiered a new medical drama on their platform, and if you feel like Grey's Anatomy has finally overstayed its welcome, this new series may provide something fresh for your viewing pleasure, even though it feels very familiar.

Due to an unfortunate quirk of timing, you might initially take Netflix’s Pulse for a pale imitation of Max’s The Pitt. Here, once again, is a drama set in the emergency room of a teaching hospital in a major American metropolis; the first several episodes even unfold, Pitt-like, over the course of a single day.
The comparison is not especially flattering to Pulse. This new series is less thrilling and less moving, less grounded in the realities of the job and more invested in the tangled interpersonal lives of its suspiciously photogenic doctors.
In fact, the Zoe Robyn-created series is much more reminiscent of a different hit: Grey’s Anatomy, with its mix of medical drama and soap operatics, its steady hum of romantic tension, its endless supply of metaphorically convenient cases. And seen that way, it’s not half bad — entertaining enough to scratch the same itch,...

In fact, the show is already being referred to as the streaming service's take on Grey’s Anatomy. That's a pretty big claim, but early buzz suggests it might just live up to the hype.
The show is called Pulse, and it's the streamer's first-ever English-language medical series. That being said, there's a significant amount of anticipation surrounding its release, and people are eager to see if it can capture the same magic that made Grey's Anatomy a global phenomenon. I guess we'll have to wait until it releases to see if Pulse can live up to the comparisons, but this is definitely not a show you want to miss!

Netflix has debuted the trailer for the upcoming hospital drama series ‘Pulse.’
As a hurricane barrels towards Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center, third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms (Willa Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly thrust into a promotion when beloved Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell) is suspended.
Amid the worsening storm and an onslaught of trauma cases, the hospital goes into lockdown. Danny and Phillips must find a way to work together – even as the bombshell details of a complicated and illicit romance between them spill out. The rest of the ER is left to process the fallout of their relationship while balancing their own challenges, both personal and professional, as they work under the pressure of life-or-death stakes. For this tight-knit group of doctors, saving their patient’s lives is often less complicated than living their own.

Netflix's upcoming new medical drama Pulse is certainly giving off Grey's Anatomy vibes if you ask me. Right down to the central relationship too. But, that doesn't mean I'm not going to watch it! I'm actually really looking forward to the upcoming series. And I think you fellow medical drama fan s will be excited about it too.
Pulse premieres Tuesday, April 3, 2025 on Netflix. There's a total of 10 episodes to look forward to. You might think that something as intense as a medical drama might be too much as a binge. Though with Grey's Anatomy doing so well streaming on Netflix, it's clear there's an audience for it. And I think that's why the streamer is clearly trying its hand at its own version. I'm definitely willing to give it a chance.
I can already tell based on the newly released trailer that I'll also be shipping Danny Simms and Xander Phillips.

It might come as a surprise that Netflix has never had its own English-language medical drama. Not that those shows are easier to make than any other genre, but there sure have been enough of them on television over the last several decades that Netflix might have made making one a priority. They didn't, but they are now.
Given a network-level budget, Pulse, starring Willa Fitzgerald and Colin Woodell, will debut on Thursday, April 3. There will be a first-time creator, Zoe Robyn, in charge with the help of veteran showrunner, Carlton Cuse. Cuse might be best known for his work on the iconic series Lost.
The plot line involves a hospital in Miami that is beginning to deal with the effects of a hurricane hitting the area. The issue is that there is drama among the doctors. Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips, played by Woodell, has been suspended, and third-year resident Dr.

With Grey’s Anatomy on its last legs, Netflix could have just what the doctor ordered.

One of the projects we’ve been crowing about coming up on Netflix in 2025 is the streamer’s first-ever medical procedural series, Pulse. The series has had the lid lifted on it with an April 2025 release date set. Here are all those first looks and a recap of everything we know so far.
First announced publicly in March 2024 (although in development for at least a year before that), the series marks a first for Netflix, at least when it comes to its English-language programming. Although it’s licensed plenty of medical dramas over the years, it’s never made one itself—at least not a procedural.

Jessie T. Usher recently discussed Netflix's upcoming series Pulse, likening its feel to the early seasons of ABC's acclaimed, long-running medical drama series, Grey's Anatomy. Usher, most well-known for playing the superhero A-Train in the fan-favorite Prime Video series The Boys, will play the Emergency Medicine Resident Sam Elijah in Pulse.
Usher made the Grey's Anatomy comparison in an interview with Screen Rant. The actor refused to give away key story points but called the upcoming Netflix show sexy, romantic, and dramatic. He also expressed that Pulse was a nice change of pace from his experience filming The Boys. "Yeah, Pulse is a medical drama, so Netflix, it'll be airing sometime this spring," he began. "I play Dr. Elijah. I can't give away story points on it, but it has the feel of early Grey's Anatomy. It's sexy, and it's romantic, and it's dramatic in a lot of ways.

2014's Vampire Academy was based on a bestselling young adult novel series, and poised to kick off the next hit YA movie franchise, but Vampire Academy 2 never happened. Directed by Mean Girls' Mark Waters, the Vampire Academy movie adapts the first book in the series by Richelle Mead. It follows best friends Rose Hathaway (Zoey Deutch), a Dhampir (human-vampire hybrid), and Lissa Dragomir (Lucy Fry), a Moroi (a breed of peaceful vampires), who run away from their boarding school, St. Vladimir's Academy, only to be caught and forced to return.
The first Vampire Academy novel was published in 2007, a time when young adult book series, particularly those centered around the supernatural, were booming in popularity. This was the same year that both Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Eclipse, the third book in the Twilight Saga, were published. Both of those series went on to become such huge movie...
