A Severance Theory Will Have You Looking Twice At Ricken And His Friends
Image
On Dan Erickson's hit sci-fi series "Severance," the lead characters have all had specialized computer chips implanted in their brains that can manipulate their memories. When they're in the office, they have no memories of their outside lives, unsure if they even have families or last names. On the outside, they have no memories of being in the office. This bifurcation of their memories means that the "innies" lack certain basic experiences. None of them know what it's like to be asleep, for instance. Because they were created to crunch numbers on Lumon computers, none of the innies have ever read a book.

On the outside, Mark is mourning the death of his wife, having fallen into drinking and despair. He shares a close bond with his sister, Devon (Jen Tullock), although he doesn't get along as well with her emotional self-help guru husband, Ricken (Michael Chernus). Ricken has recently authored his masterpiece,...

2024 Brooklyn Horror Film Festival Unveils Audience and Jury Award Winners (Exclusive)
Image
The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival has unveiled its audience and jury award honorees for its 2024 edition, which ran from Oct. 17-24 at Nitehawk Cinema’s Williamsburg and Prospect Park locations.

Taking home the best film and best ensemble awards from the Dark Matter Jury was “Dead Talents Society” from writer-director John Hsu. The comedy horror, starring Bo-lin Chen, Sandrine Pinna and Gingle Wang, follows a ghost who joins a supernatural talent agency in hopes of becoming an urban legend.

Emma Benestan won best director from the Head Trip Jury, which honors films that deviate from the typical horror formula. Her film, “Animale,” follows a young bullfighter who begins noticing disturbing changes after a violent incident in the ring. Cast members include Oulaya Amamra, Damien Rebattel and Vivien Rodriguez.

For the Shorts Jury, Grace Rex’s script for “The Shadow Wrangler” took home best screenplay. Following an audiobook narrator tortured by...

Watch: A Soap Opera About Rocks - 'The Quarry' Animated Short Film
Image
"Blemish, you don't even like music!" "Who ever said that?" Time for something a bit funky and tons of fun. The Quarry is an 11-minute animated short film comedy made by the illustrator / animation filmmaker Graham Mason based in NYC. it was originally created for Adult Swim Smalls, their short films spin-off featuring all kinds of wacky, weird creations. The Quarry is described as a "soap opera about rocks" though it's much more of a sitcom about rocks working at a quarry. One of them tries to ask out his co-worker on a date, and things don't go as planned. Featuring the voices of Brad Howe, Matthew Maher, Grace Rex, and Peter Smith. It likely won't be turned into a primetime sitcom anytime soon, but it's a fun escape into the wacky world of rocks trying to, uh, have a solid life. I laughed the most at the rock keyboard at the start.

First Trailer for True Crime Podcasters Indie Comedy 'Women Who Kill'
"Hottest female serial killer ever? That's a tough call." FilmRise has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Women Who Kill, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. The film is inspired by podcasts like "Serial" and tells the story of two women who run a podcast about serial killers called "Women Who Kill". Writer/director Ingrid Jungermann stars as Morgan, and Ann Carr plays her co-host Jean. They used to be in a relationship but not anymore. When Morgan meets a new girl at the local Food Coop, she falls for her but it turns out she may actually be a serial killer. The cast includes Sheila Vand, Annette O'Toole, Deborah Rush, Tami Sagher, Grace Rex, and Shannon Patricia O'Neill. This looks quirky and entertaining in a very Brooklyn way, with some deep Brooklyn humor, but that's cool. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster...

Trailer for ‘Women Who Kill’ Introduces a Rom-Com With a Serial Killer Twist
One of our festival favorites of the past year-plus is finally getting a release. “Morbid curiosities make for unusual romantic comedy fodder in Ingrid Jungermann’s perceptive and often very funny Women Who Kill,” we said in our review from last year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Now set for a debut later this month, the first trailer has arrived for the film which follows ex-girlfriends who host a serial killer-obsessive podcast and when a mysterious woman joins the mix, mystery begins.

“The overarching joke of the film is that it’s in the suspense or horror genre — because it’s actually just a queer romantic comedy,” the director tells EW. “I grew up in Florida as a Jehovah’s Witness, so my introduction into romantic relationships included anxiety and guilt and dread and fear. The foundation of the movie is comedy with layers of suspense and horror. And we took the suspense very seriously,...

Ben Stiller
Actor-filmmaker Ben Stiller returns to the director's chair for the first time since 2008's Tropic Thunder with his adaptation of the James Thurber short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The story follows Ben Stiller as the title character, a daydreamer who ends up losing an important photo negative, sending him on a journey to track down the photographer who sent it, played by Sean Penn. The director recently held a Q&A session after a Los Angeles screening, where he revealed details of his original opening sequence that he cut out of the final version.

"We used to have an opening to the movie I ended up cutting. A little montage at the beginning of the movie of Walter's morning routine. And it started out with him on this exercise bike - I like talking about this because I miss it - the first image was the Led...

Gay Girl's Goggles – "The Good Wife" SnapCap 3.10: Follow-through
What a strange episode of The Good Wife. I got brain whiplash from trying to connect the random stories. Yet, somehow, it worked — and turned out to be one of the better eps of the season.

Afterellen Bait

Kalinda is made of awesome — and we see her in action this week, even though she doesn't get a lot of screen time. Dana is still trying to play Kalinda to get information. But Kalinda is getting a little tired of Dana's game.

Give me a player with follow-through any time.

We also get a glimpse of how much Kalinda genuinely cares for Alicia, when she overhears that Grace is missing. Kalinda jumps into action, getting a trace on Grace's phone and tracking her down.

On a hunch, she finds Grace at church being baptized. She tells Grace not to let Alicia know who found her, but I'm hoping this is the first step toward reconciliation.

Question: Is there any truth to the rumor that the title of Glee‘s Episode 7, “I Kissed A Girl,” has something to do with Rachel and Quinn? We’re dying to know. —Bobbie

Ausiello: If you’re asking me whether Rachel and Quinn go to first base, the answer is no. The episode focuses on Santana coming out to her family, so I’m guessing the title — and accompanying Katy Perry cover — refer to that.
