Halloween is the time of year when horror appeals to all ages and backgrounds, but especially so for the young and young at heart. Luckily, there’s no shortage of family-friendly frights on streaming or network TV. If you’ve already grown tired of the familiar staples that include enduring favorites like Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Casper, Coraline, Don’t Look Under the Bed, Beetlejuice, and more, here’s the list for you.

This streaming guide is almost entirely dedicated to gateway horror titles released within the last decade, save for one deep-cut gem that’s finally found its way on streaming. Many of them are set on or around Halloween, ensuring proper spooky season viewing.

Monster High is a multimedia franchise that got off to a flying start, releasing six dolls, a novel, and a web series in 2010. The concept of fashionable high school girls who were daughters of popular monsters and creatures blew up in popularity, and over the last decade, there have been no less than 750 dolls, 60 novels, 9 video games, a new CGI animated series on Nickelodeon; and of course, 17 Monster High movies (each with a pun-based title), including a third-generation reboot featuring live-action actors.

Like several franchises, Monster High has rebooted itself a few times. As a result, there are technically a few films that could be considered origin stories. The ideal order of Monster High movies would be to watch the true prequel Welcome to Monster High, followed by the recent Monster High: The Movie, and then the web series. After this, it doesn't generally matter, as the movies are usually stand-alone stories.

Monster High 2 has become a global Netflix hit. The 2023 title is a sequel to the live-action horror-comedy musical movie about a high school for monsters, adapting the toy line of the same name. The movie originally premiered on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ and stars Miia Harris, Ceci Balagot, Nayah Damasen, The Other Two's Case Walker, and Love, Victor star Ana Ortiz. When it premiered on the platform, it didn't register on the Nielsen streaming chart and indeed was viewed less than the then 10-year-old Martin Scorsese movie The Wolf of Wall Street, which was also streaming on Paramount+.

Netflix has now calculated their global Top 10 most-watched English-language movies for the week of October 7 through October 13. The 2nd annual Children’s & Family Emmys got underway on Saturday night, starting with the Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmys at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. According to early results — pending final tallies — Disney+ and Netflix tied the lead with nine wins overall.

The most honored program of the evening was actually Netflix’s “Lost Ollie,” which scored five trophies. Disney+’s wins included multiple awards for “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” and animated series “Baymax!” Nickelodeon picked up five wins.

And it was also a good night for Disney via its linear Disney Channel, which picked up four wins.

Released last Halloween, Nickelodeon’s live action Monster High: The Movie was a hit for Paramount+, and the brand new trailer for Monster High 2 unveiled today promises school is back in session sooner than expected.

Monster High 2 is set to premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

The movie will also premiere on Nickelodeon on the same day at 7 pm Et/Pt. Encores air every weekend in October on Nickelodeon, as part of their Monster Movie Madness programming.

The new trailer below reintroduces our favorite Monster High students, along with a feisty new student, werecat Toralei Stripe (Salena Qureshi). Expect ghoulishly fun songs for the Monster High fan as Clawdeen, Draculaura, and Frankie find their groove back at Monster High for their sophomore year.

Released earlier this month, Nickelodeon’s live action Monster High: The Movie has proven to be a big time success, and just like that a sequel has now already been ordered up!

Deadline reports, “Nickelodeon and Mattel Television have given a green light to a sequel to the live-action movie musical. Based on the Mattel franchise about the children of famous monsters and creatures, the feature-length TV movie will begin production in January in Vancouver, Canada, and will air on Nickelodeon and stream on Paramount+ in 2023.”

The first live-action movie for the franchise, “Monster High: The Movie” premiered on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ on Oct. 6, 2022. A sequel to Monster High The Movie, based on the popular Mattel toy line, is in the works from Paramount+, Nickelodeon and Mattel Television.

The latest live action TV movie will once again be based on the Monster High Mattel toyline that features teenage children of monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman undergoing the trials and tribulations of high school.

The feature-length TV movie will also again be produced in Vancouver and will air on Nickelodeon and stream on Paramount+ in 2023. The first live-action movie for the franchise, Monster High The Movie, successfully debuted on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ on Oct. 6, 2022.

The sequel is being penned by Matt Eddy and Billy Eddy, based on a story they wrote with Todd Holland, who will direct and executive produce the sequel.

As the spooky, surprise-filled ride that was Jason Segel’s “Dispatches From Elsewhere” came to an end for viewers last month with a finale that actually incorporated some of those viewers. The final moments of the AMC series closed with a compilation of more than 100 self-recorded videos featuring people saying a crucial line from the show: “I am [insert name here], and I am you.”

Now the way Segel and the “Dispatches” team got these clips — made by people who did not originally know that they were going to be used in the show — was in true “Dispatches” fashion: through an alternate reality game (Arg).

Though the middle of the episode, titled “Cave of Kelpius,” led our heroes to believe that this was all a large-scale puzzle orchestrated by someone, the end of the hour brought Janice face to face with that someone, a woman who tells Janice that Clara is a real person and that she, the architect of this game, is responsible for her death.

You can't keep a good man down. In the wake of Mike & Molly's cancellation, star Billy Gardell is getting schooled. High-schooled, that is. The actor, who played Mike Biggs on CBS's cancelled Mike & Molly will appear in the second part of Girl Meets World's two-night season premiere, TV Line reports.
