In marriage, like in horror movies, rituals are important.
Dave Franco and Alison Brie, partners in work and life, have been on the road for months preparing for this weekend’s release of their co-dependent body horror flick “Together.” The highest seller at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the project has made waves for its terrifying advance marketing – all merging flesh, crushed bones and other invisible forces proving that Franco and Brie’s fictional couple have bigger problems than who did or did not lower the toilet seat.
Off-screen, their own rituals have been sweeter. Variety asked the pair to reflect on their 2017 Los Angeles wedding, an intimate affair gleefully devoid of the horrors of “Together” (unless you count an uninvited guest showing up). Here, they discuss a confusing but endearing proposal, a simple (non-occult) ceremony and a party that still nets them compliments 8 years later.

Several months ago, Tesla dealerships in several Western states were under attack from gunfire and arson in response to company owner Elon Musk’s role in reelecting President Donald Trump and then working on his behalf to dismantle a slew of federal government agencies. Now, in his own attempt to Make America Great Again, he’s opened the first retro-minded Tesla Diner in Hollywood, where the line is hours-long around the clock.
The world’s richest man first publicly floated this nostalgia play in a 2018 tweet — before his hard-right political turn, before his purchase of Twitter and before he decamped from his Los Angeles home base for Texas. This predated Hollywood liberals’ widespread rejection of him, often by either dumping their Teslas or else affixing bumper stickers to assure fellow motorists “I Bought This Before Elon Went Crazy.”
In this way, the Tesla Diner is both a utopic throwback to L.

The Lincoln Lawyer premiered on Netflix in 2022 and has become a major hit ever since. Season 3 left fans wanting more with the major cliffhanger, but the legal drama has just received an exciting update.

The new season will have Mickey Haller defending himself, and will be surrounded by many familiar faces, but also several newcomers. One of them, Constance Zimmer, has just shared an exciting update on Instagram: that The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 wrapped production.

Phil Rosenthal may be many years out from his last sitcom, but the Everybody Loves Raymond creator keeps damn busy. In the wilds of Alberta earlier in June, where he accepted the award of excellence at the annual Banff World Media Festival, the star of Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil sat down to go through his packed schedule. There’s the eighth season of his culinary travelog, out today, a Paley Center retrospective of Raymond, his upcoming speaking tour and, if the red tape finally permits it, a mid-summer launch for his and Nancy Silverton’s Los Angeles diner, Max and Helen’s. The famously cheery TV writer is psyched about it all… though he is not above indulging a few digressions about the horrors of American life at the moment.

“I’m cutting back on the bread and sugar,” Phil Rosenthal says with a pained look.
The “Somebody Feed Phil” creator has just wrapped up the eighth season of his Netflix series, which will debut on June 18. The filming process was an epic jaunt through the best pastries, meats, and cheeses of Amsterdam, Tbilisi, Manila, Boston and other far-flung, food-obsessed destinations. Shortly after he returned from his journeys, Rosenthal made the mistake of getting his annual physical.
“If you saw my cholesterol levels right now, you’d go, ‘How is he alive?'” Rosenthal says. “There’s always a period of correction, but this time the fasting is doctor’s orders.”
It’s a Sunday morning in February, and we’re at Old John’s Diner on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Rosenthal’s made the trek to the Big Apple to attend “Saturday Night Live’s” 50th anniversary celebration.

You know you loved How I Met Your Mother, right? The cast was incredibly good, and oddly, only the actor who played the lead role of Ted, Josh Radnor, has not achieved notable success since. So, what a great idea it is to have a tinge of How I Met Your Mother added to the fourth season of Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer.
It won't be Radnor who will be joining the Netflix series, though. Instead, Variety recently reported that Cobie Smulders, who played Robin on the NBC program, will be coming to your favorite streamer. And not in a small role. She will play a pivotal character named Allison.
Allison is somehow connected to Mickey, the lawyer that the show's plot revolves around, but in what way we don't yet know. There appears to be a good chance that Smulders' Allison has more than a one-season arc, too. Rumors...

Netflix’s legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer is reviving its courtroom sessions once again, but this time, viewers in the backseat will have a view of some new faces. Yes, season 4 of the stylish legal thriller is underway, with Mickey Haller in serious trouble after the wild cliffhanger ending, where a client turned up dead in his trunk. Of course, it is not the best day at the office, but fear not, help or chaos is on the way.
Well, a fresh set of guest stars is stepping into the legal mess. The upcoming season will feature a gutsy paralegal-in-training, a no-nonsense cellmate with international flair, and a real-life TV reporter playing, well, herself, and others. With the courtroom heat rising too high and the Lincoln wheels still spinning, season 4 is definitely going to have a bumpy legal ride.

Haaaaaave you met Cobie Smulders in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4? Well, we haven't yet, but we're going to whenever the hit legal drama returns to Netflix. Variety reported on June 2 that Smulders has been added the fourth season of the Netflix original series, and while a lot of mystery continues to surround the How I Met Your Mother star's role, it seems to be a potentially big one.
According to a tease from Deadline about Smulders' role in The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 finale, there's a possibility that her character could return in the currently unconfirmed season 5. Again, there's not much known about who she's playing, but Deadline shares that Smulders plays Allison, "an important character connected to Mickey." I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pivotal role!

Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) is set to appear in the Netflix and A+E Studios hit series The Lincoln Lawyer in the Season 4 finale, Deadline has confirmed. Sources reveal she will play Allison, an important character connected to Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), whose storyline could continue into Season 5.
The storyline was teed up at the end of the Season 3 finale when Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) was pulled over and arrested when the body of a client was found in the trunk of his Lincoln. Next season will see Mickey defending himself as he goes on trial for murder. He will face off with the prosecutor on the case, Dana Berg (Constance Zimmer), who has ties to his first ex-wife, Maggie (Neve Campbell).
The season is based on The Law of Innocence, the sixth book in Michael Connelly’s The Lincoln Lawyer series.

Two years after her shocking exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cobie Smulders has found a new franchise to call home. The actor has been cast in the latest season of The Lincoln Lawyer, the Netflix drama series based on Michael Connelly's Mickey Haller book series.
According to Variety, character details for Smulder's role remain under wraps at this time, which is somewhat surprising considering that all the other Season 4 casting announcements revealed who they would be playing. For instance, Constance Zimmer (Entourage) has been cast as Dana Berg, a new adversary for Mickey Haller, while Jason O'Mara (Fire Country), Emmanuelle Chiriquí (Superman & Lois), and Javon Johnson (American Soul) will portray Jack Gilroy, Jeanine Ferrigno, and Carter Gates, respectively.
Returning as series regulars for The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 are Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Mickey Haller), Neve Campbell (Maggie McPherson), Becki Newton (Lorna Crane), Jazz Raycole (Izzy Letts), Angus Sampson (Dennis "Cisco...

Even though The Lincoln Lawyer will be down a fan-favorite character in season 4, the hit Netflix original legal drama has added four more new cast members to the fold. Superman & Lois alum Emmanuelle Chriqui, The Man in the High Castle star Jason O'Mara, The Oval favorite Javon Johnson, and chef Nancy Silverton will make appearances in the upcoming fourth season.
Chriqui might have the most pivotal role of the bunch as Jeanine Ferrigno, a local gangster's girlfriend and a figure in a criminal enterprise who supplies Mickey with some pressing info in support of his defense strategy. Meanwhile, O'Mara plays Jack Gilroy, Maggie's (Neve Campbell) current boyfriend, who could be standing in the way of Mickey and Maggie's rekindling.

Walking around UTA’s annual bash in Washington D.C. Friday night during this weekend of the White House Correspondents Dinner, many of the expected scenes abided.
The CNN personalities Dana Bash and John Berman jokingly pretended to introduce themselves to each other before posing for a party photo taken by their colleague, D.C. bureau chief David Chalian.
The U.S. senator Amy Klobuchar stood deep inside the crowd in the giant space of Osteria Mozza, the DC offshoot of Nancy Silverton’s Hollywood staple, greeting a slew of well-wishers.
And as a deejay blared Whitney Houston and bartenders poured bespoke cocktails, hundreds of sharply dressed media insiders circulated, laughed and even sometimes danced in a tableau that repeated itself more than a dozen times throughout the capital this weekend.

Marta Kauffman didn’t think twice about signing on as a co-host for Cooking for Kamala, a fundraiser for the vice president featuring an “intimate dinner” designed by celebrity chef Nancy Silverton. The evening, set for Sept. 14 in Los Angeles, includes an appearance by Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona.
“Nancy is my neighbor and I may have been the first person she asked to come,” the “Friends” and “Grace and Frankie” co-creator says. “She simply said, ‘Would you do this with me?’ and I immediately said, ‘Yes!’”
While Kauffman is optimistic that Harris will win the White House, she’s also staying cautious after having watched Hillary Clinton lose to Donald Trump in 2016.
“I got complacent and thought, ‘You know, all the polls say it’s going to be Hillary,” Kauffman recalls. “And this is going to be a tight race. Now is when we have to start doing everything we can — sending postcards,...

"Is this the beginning of something crumbling, or is something that's gonna strengthen [the restaurant industry]." Gravitas Venture has already released this documentary film on VOD already - but we're just now catching up with it. Directed by Peter Ferriero, Sorry We're Closed takes a look into the personal trauma, mental health, and livelihood of some of the best chefs during the hardest time of their careers. In the summer of 2020, restaurants are hit doubly hard by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the aftermath of George Floyd's murder. Chef Elizabeth Falkner checks in with her restaurateur colleagues across the country to see how they're coping, and whether or not they're able to keep on cooking. The film features appearances by Chef Elizabeth, Dominique Crenn, Nancy Silverton, Ann Kim, Gerald Sombright, Maneet Chauhan, and many more chefs from around the nation. This won the Best Feature Documentary award from the Pasadena Film Festival a few months ago.

Losing a lead actor is a nightmare scenario for any series, especially when the circumstances are as fraught and the voice work is as recognizable as Justin Roiland’s. Season four of Solar Opposites opens with Korvo getting shot in the throat by a voice-changing ray. It’s initially jarring to hear the stumbling, extremely Roiland-esque narration read by Dan Stevens, but the actor’s plummy English tones are actually a perfect fit for the uptight alien. And while a “voice-changing ray” might sound like a laughably perfunctory solution to the problem, it’s likewise a perfect fit for a show that never takes itself too seriously.
The new season begins with Korvo suggesting that his family rein in their zany antics to prevent their young Pupa (Sagan McMahan) from going berserk again. With this in mind, Korvo and Terry (Thomas Middelditch)—the parental figures in this odd alien household...

“Singapore is Asia for beginners,” says Cher and the Loneliest Elephant director Jonathan Finnigan, “because it’s so safe, it’s so organized, and English is the national language. Everything works, and you’re never going to struggle for good food — there’s too much almost.”

MasterClass, the education streaming platform, is lowering the price of its annual subscription from $15 a month to $10 a month as it adds new programming from talent like Amy Poehler.
The pricing change bucks the trend in streaming, where major streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ and Hulu have introduced price hikes over the past few years to increase revenue and keep up with rising content costs.
“By continuing to innovate the approach to our portfolio of content and making the platform more accessible, we’re not only unlocking potential in our members, we’re enabling them to realize it,” David Rogier, the founder and CEO of MasterClass, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Upcoming programs on the service will include an improv course led by Poehler that she said will “help anyone who is looking to be open, curious and ready for an unprepared life.” The class, released in the fall,...

Seconds after hitting the red carpet outside NeueHouse Hollywood on Thursday night, Jennifer Garner stopped posing momentarily to ask the row of photographers a quick question (or two).
“What do you think? Is she doing a good job?” Garner asked, referring to the woman standing to her left, power publicist and Lede Company co-founder and co-ceo Meredith O’Sullivan. Garner then turned to face O’Sullivan, adjusted the lapels of her black tuxedo jacket and faux-straightened her white dress shirt, like a publicist might do for a client ahead of a gala like the one about to unfold.
The gesture perfectly telegraphed how the tables turned for the special event as Garner showed up to honor O’Sullivan, her longtime publicist and “dear friend,” someone used to shining a light on her A-list clients, not the other way around.

After a nearly three-year hiatus due to Covid, the California Spirit Gala tasting event returned to the Sony lot on Sunday to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
Hundreds of guests gathered on a breezy afternoon to enjoy food provided by over a dozen different chefs from some of Los Angeles’ hottest restaurants. Attendees enjoyed oysters from The Lobster courtesy of chef Govind Armstrong, fried chicken from Howlin’ Rays, chocolate monkey shoulder in a whiskey torte by pastry chef Sherry Ward and marinated peppers with tuna from Osteria Mozza served up personally by L.A. restaurant legend Nancy Silverton.
As they have for several years now, Phil Rosenthal and Sherry Lansing served as the gala’s honorary co-chairs, and Rosenthal spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the importance of using food to unite people.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Betty Gilpin is in the desert. She’s there filming “Mrs. Davis,” Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez’s Peacock drama series, but doesn’t give a specific location — “We’re shooting in the middle of nowhere,” she says — because the project is still mostly under wraps.
Gilpin does share that playing a nun on the show has been quite uncomfortable. “The costume designer is very much British and put me in a wool habit, and we are shooting in the absolute desert, and it’s so hot,” Gilpin tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I don’t know how these nuns do it. I hope that when they’re at the convent and they have no visitors, they’re like, ‘Should we just wear boxers today?’ Because this is insane.”
Gilpin then teases about the series, “It’s so weird.
