There was a time, not too long ago, when Dan Harmon shared absolutely everything.

His bowel movements inspired tweets and Tumblr entries, his dysfunctional relationship with his then-partner powered hours of podcasts, and his firing from Community, his own cult TV creation, fueled a 21-city bus tour and later a documentary. A life of transparency, he reasoned, was therapeutic, healthy even for a guy who’d routinely describe himself as self-loathing and self-destructive.

Then the culture changed. “It stopped being punk rock to just say anything,” says Harmon. And he changed, or at least he tried to change. He embraced actual therapy and largely retreated from the public eye, shuttering both his popular podcast and his prolific Twitter feed. He found love in his personal life and balance in his professional one, and then he watched it all come dangerously close to vanishing as his past caught up to him.

Ellation-owned Vrv, the streaming platform that aggregates over-the-top video services into one destination, has announced that it is bringing back HarmonQuest for a third season.

Produced by Universal Cable Productions and Starburns Industries, the series is a mix of adult animation and live improvisation. Created by Dan Harmon, the man behind the breakout hit “Rick and Morty,” and longtime partner Spencer Crittenden, production for the new season will begin this fall in Los Angeles.

Spencer Crittenden went into “HarmonQuest” a game master and came out a showrunner. Long the trusted guide of the adventures of Fondue (Dan Harmon), Beor (Erin McGathy), and Bone Weevil (Jeff Davis) on the hybrid animated/live-action series and in other Harmon-led projects, Crittenden has taken a larger role than ever on “HarmonQuest” Season 2. That means not only continuing the ongoing deeds of Fondue and Co., but bringing in a new batch of week-to-week one-off characters to join the fray.

“A big part of role-playing games is that every group is different, every table is different, every player has different values and ideas of what the game is,” Crittenden recently told IndieWire. “They’re all kind of right and kind of wrong, but everyone is still having fun. I think they all highlight the correct way to play and show that you don’t necessarily have to be an expert.

Dan Harmon began playing Dungeons & Dragons with his pals as a kid. Now he’s turned a life-long affinity for role-playing games into a full-fledged TV show.

“HarmonQuest,” which premieres July 14 on Seeso, features Harmon and pals on stage as they improvise through the Pathfinder Roleplaying World, with much of their interaction and gameplay then set to animation.

Harmon told IndieWire that he was inspired by HBO’s “The Ricky Gervais Show,” which took Gervais’ podcast with Karl Pilkington and animated their conversations. “I was endlessly entertained by impromptu audio coupled with animation, with the animation bringing what was being said to life, especially when what was being said was absurd,” Harmon said.

“In TV or all things creative, it’s your job to follow your own laughter,” he added. “When I was watching that show I’d be laughing so hard my sides would hurt, which is a rare thing.

I'm sure most of you are already familiar with who Dan Harmon is, but if not, he's the creator of shows such as Community and Rick and Morty. The guy is a huge geek who, like many of us, enjoys the sci-fi and fantasy genre. The guy also loves to play Dungeons & Dragons and that's what this new series called HarmonQuest revolves around.

The series features Harmon playing Dungeons & Dragons with some of his comedian friends that include Aubrey Plaza, Paul F. Tompkins, Chelsea Peretti, Ron Funches, and more. We're not sure if there's been a figure in the history of television quite like Dan Harmon. The "Community" creator has over the past few years become one of the bigger celebrity showrunners, and whose fiiter-free, headline-grabbing antics and rise-and-fall-and-rise again narrative, have seen him become, if not a household name, then a serious cult figure. Neil Berkeley's documentary "Harmontown" investigates that cult, and the man who leads it. The film follows the writer taking his "Harmontown" podcast on tour in early 2013, six months or so after he was fired from "Community" at the conclusion of the show's third season. For the uninitiated, the podcast is a rambling, chaotic, mostly improvised couple of hours that features Harmon, actor/comic Jeff B. Davis, Harmon's girlfriend Erin McGathy, and Spencer Crittenden, a fan who was picked out of the audience during the tour to play "Dungeons & Dragons" onstage and now serves.

This doc chronicles Harmon bringing his Los Angeles-based podcast on a live tour several months after he was famously fired from Community in 2012.

Filmmaker Neil Berkeley followed Harmon, his girlfriend Erin McGathy, the show's 'comptroller' Jeff Davis and resident Dungeons & Dragons expert Spencer Crittenden on a tour of the Us.

Harmon was subsequently re-hired as the showrunner of Community after finishing the live tour, and will oversee the programme's move to Yahoo Screen for season six.

Harmontown contains interviews about Harmon's triumphs and eccentricities from friends and co-workers including Sarah Silverman, Joel McHale, Jack Black and Gillian Jacobs.

The documentary – which was screened at the SXSW Film Festival – will receive a limited theatrical release and debut on VOD on October 3.
