Guillermo del Toro at an event for Splice (2009)
Frankenstein: Legacy (2024)
Guillermo del Toro at an event for Splice (2009)
Guillermo Del Toro is doing a version of the Mary Shelley story due next year. No stranger to remakes, interpretations of nostalgia, and comedy with Clive/Karloff or Lee/Cushing or perhaps even De Niro/Branagh or someone else as a reference point. Hammer Studios created its mythos which became more the story of the Baron than the creature.

Paul Dudbridge’s Frankenstein: Legacy is a pleasant well-crafted look at a pursuit of Victor Frankenstein’s’ diary of experiments in creation. This was a story element in Universal’s Frankenstein Meets The Wolf man (1943), Son Of Frankenstein (1939) and The Ghost Of Frankenstein (1942).

The film opens after Victor Frankenstein passes away on a schooner in the Arctic, his diary falls into the hands of a sailor, who passes the notebook on and on until it reaches the hands of Millicent Browning (Juliet Aubrey) a rebellious scientist and noble wife of the...

‘Dagr’ Review
Image
Stars: Riz Moritz, Ellie Duckles, Tori Butler-Hart, Matt Barber, Emma King, Graham Butler, Hattie Chapman, Luca Thompson | Written by Matthew Butler-Hart, Tori Butler-Hart | Directed by Matthew Butler-Hart

On-screen text sets the scene for Dagr, clarifying that the unfolding film is video footage from an ongoing homicide investigation that professional filmmakers have edited. The opening footage establishes central characters Louise (Riz Moritz) and Thea (Ellie Duckles), best friends who are fame-seeking YouTubers with a huge following. The pair disguise their faces in order to make their videos, where they commit crimes such as theft and graffiti in the name of justice.

For their next video, the pair arrive at a lavish house where a commercial is being filmed. As the duo intend to steal fancy items to donate to the poor, they are unaware that the filming crew have accidentally awakened a druid demon from the past. What unfolds are strange occurrences which threaten their lives.

‘Frankenstein Legacy’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Philip Martin Brown, Juliet Aubrey, Michelle Ryan, Matt Barber, Katie Sheridan, Charles Dale, Andrew McGillan, Alexandra Afryea | Written by Paul Dudbridge, Jim Griffin | Directed by Paul Dudbridge

There have been a whole host of movies featuring Frankenstein’s monster. The first appeared in 1910 and the most famous and best is still 1931’s Frankenstein. Its sequel in 1935 – Bride of Frankenstein – is another classic but there’s been probably more misses than hits since then. In 2013 Frankenstein’s Army had some cool ideas but didn’t hit the heights it perhaps should have while the following year’s I, Frankenstein was a fun, if throwaway, action horror. Bernard Rose directed 2015’s Frankenstein and I wish more people would check that out because it’s great. While this year brings Lisa Frankenstein and this, co-writer/director Paul Dudbridge’s Frankenstein’s Legacy.

Downton Abbey: 10 Best Romantic Relationships
Image
Downton Abbey enmeshed drama, historical events, and romance with each other in a way that few other television shows could. The story of the Grantham family and their lives after they lost their heirs in the Titanic disaster captivated fans, especially because the new and enigmatic Matthew Crawley stepped into the aristocracy out of nowhere.

However, this strange situation was softened massively by the romance of Downton Abbey. Lady Mary, Lady Sybil, and Lady Edith had some magical relationships throughout the show, as did the staff of the Estate, who lived downstairs. These slow-burn romances kept fans coming back for more, but some were better than others.

Frankenstein Legacy: Michelle Ryan stars in a follow-up to Mary Shelley’s story
Image
Earlier this year, we heard that Paul Dudbridge had directed a “period action thriller” called Fear the Invisible Man. That movie has since secured distribution, but a release date has not yet been announced. Since making Fear the Invisible Man, Dudbridge has moved on to directing another movie inspired by a classic horror tale. His latest film is called Frankenstein: Legacy, and 101 Films International is presenting it to potential distributors.

A century after Victor Frankenstein’s doomed experiment, his journals have traded hands for decades. Frankenstein’s secrets did not die with him. ‘The Sonata’: Film Review
Restoration wit William Congreve opined that music had charms to soothe the savage breast, but in “The Sonata,” it has power to summon the savage beast — you know, the one usually depicted with horns, tail, and a pitchfork. This handsome horror meller set primarily in France benefits considerably from location shooting in cheaper, but picturesque Latvia. It’s Looks 10, Personality 4, however, as director Andrew Desmond and collaborator Arthur Morin’s screenplay doesn’t quite provide enough incident to properly milk its own premise, making for a supernatural thriller that ends just as it’s beginning to work up a sweat.

Opening on 11 U.S. screens Jan. 10 (simultaneous with on-demand release), it’s a watchable if ultimately underwhelming exercise. Perhaps the most notable element here is one of the late Rutger Hauer’s final performances, though he completed several other projects after this late-arriving import, which has played festivals and theatrical...

Frightfest 2019: ‘The Sonata’ Review
Stars: Freya Tingley, Simon Abkarian, James Faulkner, Rutger Hauer, Catherine Schaub-Abkarian, Matt Barber, Christopher Brand, James Kermack, Myster Jo, Laine Ligere Stengrévica | Written by Andrew Desmond, Arthur Morin | Directed by Andrew Desmond

While horror movies and classical music aren’t complete strangers, it’s not like they know each other very well. Films like The Shining, Candyman and The Exorcist have used this style of music in their movies but not many have their storylines centered around classical music. This is exactly what The Sonata does.

After her father’s passing a young violinist discovers that her parent was involved in much more darker occurrences than the music he wrote. Finding his last ever piece of music, she is lead into a world she never knew existed.

It felt that, for a long time, The Sonata was building and building to a big final scene where all the horror and...

Why Princess Diana’s Niece Lady Kitty Spencer Slept on the Street in London
Princess Diana
Lady Kitty Spencer slept on the street last week —but she is quick to note that her experience was nothing like that of the homeless youth for which she was raising awareness.

It is a completely different scenario.”

“This was about giving people a glimpse into this reality and enforcing just how difficult...

Armstrong will play Stowell, the butler of Lady Rose's husband Atticus Aldridge and his family, while Lapotaire stars as the much-discussed Princess Irina, the lost wife of Prince Kuragin (played by Rade Sherbedgia).

The episode sees Rose's father-in-law Lord Sinderby rent out Brancaster Castle for grouse shooting season, inviting the Crawley family for a shooting party. It soon becomes apparent that butler Stowell has a serious axe to grind, while a scandalous secret threatens to ruin the holiday for everybody.

Back at Downton, where the servants are holding the fort, Bates is forced to take drastic measures in order to save his beloved wife Anna from...

Downton Abbey: 8 stories we want for series 6
Downton Abbey has come and gone for another year, but fear ye not, as we still have the Christmas special to look forward to!

Last week, ITV confirmed that Julian Fellowes's period drama will return for a sixth series in 2015.

The Christmas special is most likely to take place a year later in 1925, so chances are that the sixth series will travel to 1926 - the year of the General Strike, the first televisions, the first British Grand Prix and Winnie-the-Pooh.

While it is not currently known whether this could be the final series, we have picked eight things that we would definitely like to see happen next year.

1. A quick conclusion to the Anna storyline

This will hopefully be settled by the end of the Christmas special, but, if not, we hope that Anna (Joanne Froggatt) will be back safe and sound at Downton by the start of the sixth series.

The promo teases the changes that are coming to Downton, including a marriage and potential departures.

Anna (Joanne Froggatt) and Bates (Brendan Coyle) appear to be in a difficult situation as they find themselves in jail, while there appears to be trouble for Rose (Lily James) and Atticus (Matt Barber) at their wedding.

Robert (Hugh Bonneville) is also starting to deduce that something seems odd about Edith's (Laura Carmichael) obsession with her adopted daughter.

Downton Abbey concludes on Sunday (November 9) at 9pm on ITV.

Downton Abbey's Matt Barber: 'Atticus is the nicest man on the planet'
While many of Downton Abbey's characters remain stuck in the past, Lady Rose (Lily James) has always been the constant bright spark to bring them into the 20th century, and now she finally has a serious love interest to join her.

Matt Barber joined the cast of the ITV period drama this year as Atticus Aldridge, the Jewish son of Lord and Lady Sinderby, whom she meets after bumping into him in town.

The 31-year-old actor has built up an impressive theatre credit list - including Pygmalion opposite Downton's Michelle Dockery in 2008 - and has since appeared in the likes of Being Human, Bert and Dickie and NBC's Dracula.

Digital Spy had a chat with Barber about playing one of the most pleasant characters on television and where his story may lead.

Is Atticus everything that he seems?

"I think he is genuinely the nicest man on the planet!
