Happy as Lazzaro (2018)
The Polish film festival will open with ’Capharnaum’ and close with ‘Happy As Lazzaro’.

Nadine Labaki’s Capharnaum will open and Alice Rohrwacher’s Happy As Lazzaro will close the New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw in Poland which runs from July 26 to August 5, 2018.

Bold, uncompromising films by artists seeking new forms of expression are the hallmarks of this year’s main International Competition line-up of 12 titles which includes films from China, the Dominican Republic, Portugal and the Us, said artistic director Marcin Pieńkowski.

Italian-Irish project 'Wolf' triumphs at 2018 Sofia Meetings
Sofia Film Festival winners also announced.

Dublin-based Italian writer-director Nathalie Biancheri’s second feature film project Wolf was awarded the Danny Lerner Grand Prix for best international project at the 15th edition of the Sofia Meetings co-production market this weekend.

The Nu Boyana Film Studios’ CEO Yariv Lerner handed over a prize of €50,000 in services and a cheque for €5,000 to Biancheri and her producer Jessie Fisk for what the director describes as “a high concept, absurdist arthouse drama”.

Budgeted at €1.2m, Wolf is set to be the first project to go into production by Fisk’s production company Feline Films.

The TorinoFilmlab has revealed the nine projects that will take part in the 2016 edition of FrameWork, the initiative’s flagship lab for first and second feature film projects.

Amongst the first and second-time filmmakers is Iranian director Massoud Bakhshi, whose first feature A Respectable Family debuted in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2012, and Israeli director Tom Shoval, whose 2013 drama Youth was named best Israeli feature at the 2013 Jerusalem Film Festival.

This year’s mentors include Israel Film Fund executive director Katriel Schory, script consultants Franz Rodenkirchen, Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten and Anita Voorham, film director Thanos Anastopoulos, cinematographer Marko Brdar, post-production expert Niko Remus, producer Didar Domehri, acting coach and casting director Tatiana Vialle, sound designer Peter Albrechtsen and film promotion consultant Joanna Solecka.

When East Meets West (Wemw) co-production forum received record number of submissions.

New films by Daniel Ribeiro (The Way He Looks), Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov (The Lesson) and Tudor Giurgiu (Of Snails And Men) are among 22 development projects - 12 fiction feature films and 10 documentaries - which will be presented at the sixth edition of Trieste’s When East Meets West (Wemw) co-production forum (Jan 24-26).

According to Wemw’s organisers, a record 301 projects were submitted by producers to participate in the event which will be attracting 150 international decision-makers including representatives from Wild Bunch, Fandango, Latido Films, Zdf/Arte, Loco Films, New Europe Film Sales, Eurimages and East West Film Distribution.

A total of 18 countries are represented in the 2016 line-up of projects ranging from Turkey and Lithuania through Serbia and Poland to Romania and Italy as well as the ‘guest countries’ of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.
