Freaky is one of the few major motion pictures that has been released in the last few months of the year (at least in the United States) and is a fun mix of Freaky Friday and Mean Girls with a dash of the Scream franchise. Vince Vaughn looks like he is having fun playing not only a serial killer but also a 17-year-old high schooler while the rest of the cast, including Misha Osherovich in a breakout role, does a solid job creating a fun and unique film.

The horror genre loves its tropes — sets of rules that dictate survival based on stereotypes around morality, class, race, gender and sexual orientation.

Much of the game in modern horror comes in examining and subverting those tropes, perhaps none so recent and notable as “Freaky,” Christopher Landon’s body-swap film from Universal Pictures that hits PVOD on Friday.

Dressed up as a gory comedy, “Freaky” offers liberating and honest portraits of young women and queer people, free from tokenism and broad generalizations to which the genre can often resort.

In “Freaky,” a struggling teen girl Millie (Kathryn Newton) and a menacing serial killer (Vince Vaughn) switch bodies thanks to a supernatural artifact. In Christopher Landon’s “Freaky,” 6-foot-5-inch-tall actor Vince Vaughn, who plays a serial killer, body swaps with 5-foot-5-inch-tall Kathryn Newton — and as it turns out, Vaughn had some tricks up his sleeve to help Newton embody that physicality.

“Vince is so great — it was such a collaborative experience and he gave me so many great ideas and I got so inspired from him,” Newton told TheWrap. “We talked a lot about the physicality of both characters. Millie is all over the place, and her center of gravity is like the top of her head, and she’s hunched over and insecure and talks with her hands way too much. And I was like, ‘well, I do that, so I think Millie should do that and have these nervous tics.’ I was like, ‘we need to change me. I can’t be like Millie at all and the butcher.

76 Days, from directors Hao Wu, Weixi Chen, and an anonymous filmmaker,is a heartbreaking work of documentary vérité investigating the emerging Covid-19 outbreak at a single hospital in Wuhan, China, and their response from early February to April 2020, when Wuhan lifted their initial lockdown. Eschewing contextualizing features, 76 Days places viewers alongside doctors and nurses as they struggle to control the spiraling implications of Covid-19, dealing with an influx of scared patients, a virus they do not fully understand, and diminishing resources. Though 76 Days proves a hard watch, it’s a profoundly visceral look into how one hospital dealt with the raging virus. – Christian G.

The Croods: A New Age easily won the holiday box office weekend after taking in $9.7 million in three days. For the 5-day totals, the movie earned $14.2 million and then $35 million globally. This marks the highest debut since the public health crisis started and theaters reopened their doors. Warner Bros. was only able to take in $9.35 million with Christopher Nolan's latest movie Tenet, and that was the 3-day Labor Day weekend. Though the numbers for this weekend are pretty dismal, they are some of the best that we've seen in 2020.

It was originally thought that families would be slower to visit movie theaters after they reopened, but the studio was able to promote The Croods: A New Age enough that it got some families in to keep a Thanksgiving tradition alive. We've been excited for Daily Dead readers to see Christopher Landon’s new horror comedy Freaky ever since Heather Wixson gave it a 4.5 star review at Beyond Fest. The film was released in theaters on November 13th, but if you're avoiding public places during the latest Covid-19 surge, we're pleased that you'll soon be able to enjoy the new film from the comfort and safety of your own home, as Universal will release Blumhouse's Freaky on VOD beginning Friday, December 4th.

The VOD release date announcement was made on Twitter, including a link to the various VOD platforms the film will be released on.

Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler is just trying to survive the bloodthirsty halls of Blissfield High and the cruelty of the popular crowd.

The switching bodies cinematic legacy is full of entries, and it just scored a worthy addition with the Vince Vaughn-starring Blumhouse thriller Freaky.

Freaky Friday has nothing on Freaky—after all, no one involved in that classic body switch flick was a serial killer. Sure, one half was a teenage girl, that much is similar. But that is where the similarities begin and end.

First off, Blissfield could not be a better moniker for the town that hosts our yarn. Right? A serial killer is about to march through this municipality, on Homecoming weekend no less, and everything the killer does is at the other end of a blissful spectrum.

As Freaky commences, Millie (Kathryn Newton) is a somewhat moody teenage girl who feels her “friendship” with her mother is the only thing keeping the family matriarch (Katie Finneran) from completely drinking herself to death.

Now, she just drinks herself to sleep every night.

Finding the right balance between horror and comedy is one of the hardest things to pull off successfully on film, but writer/director Christopher Landon has done it twice with Happy Death Day (2017) and its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, in which a college student played by Jessica Rothe keeps reliving the same day on which she dies…and then gets to relive it in a different dimension.

Slasher horror and comedy can co-exist, as most recently demonstrated by director Christopher Landon with “Happy Death Day” and its underrated sequel, “Happy Death Day 2U.” That same lightning doesn’t quite strike again with Landon’s latest, “Freaky”; some of the laughs and some of the scares definitely land, but overall, the two genres resist blending into a successful mix.

The unspoken joke of the title is that this movie really wants to be called “Freaky Friday the 13th,” which is not a bad starting point, but the line dividing gory violence and farcical hilarity — which Landon has skillfully walked in the past — gets too blurry for the movie’s own good.

Within the span of just six years, he’s proven that he’s one of the most innovative and fun-loving filmmakers working within the genre space, and with Freaky, Landon demonstrates once again that he has an uncanny ability to create entertaining horror hybrids that not only celebrate everything that we love about genre storytelling, but also elevate those elements by finding new ways to explore them through the magic of moviemaking.
