Ho99o9 Detail New Album, Unveil “Incline” Featuring Nova Twins, Pink Siifu, and Yung Skrrt: Stream
Image
Rap metal duo Ho99o9 (pronounced “horror”) have pulled back the curtain on their third album, Tomorrow We Escape, out September 9th, unveiling the tracklist, artwork, and another new song.

The band had previously released the grinding lead single “Upside Down,” and the new single, “Incline” — produced by David Sitek — follows in a similar vein, combining hip-hop, nu-metal, and industrial. Here the group is assisted by a trio of guest performers who are also known for experimentation: Nova Twins, Pink Siifu, and Yung Skrrt.

The rest of the album also features some other notable guest vocalists including Greg Puciato on the song “Tapeworm” and Chelsea Wolfe on the track “Immortal.” As Ho99o9 revealed in the initial press announcement, Tomorrow We Escape sees the duo toning down the politics in favor of a more emotionally-driven songwriting approach.

“It was a healthy challenge to focus on emotion,” stated the band in a press release.

The Heavy Metal Festival Aiming to Curb Teen Suicide
Image
When Nate Newton, bassist for the band Converge, first learned how steep the suicide rate among Native American teens was, he was shocked. “I was like, ‘That can’t be right. That’s so absolutely fucked up,'” he tells Rolling Stone. Native Americans have the highest suicide rate of any ethnic group in the United States, according to the CDC, and Indigenous high school students have “seriously considered attempting suicide” more than teens of any other ethnicity. “We hear anecdotes about how things can be bleak on reservations, but...

‘Superman’ Director James Gunn Created Spotify Playlists for Clark Kent, Lex Luthor and More | Audio
Image
Ahead of the film’s release next week, DC Studios Co-Chief James Gunn reveals what music his “Superman” characters listen to, partnering with Spotify to create personalized playlists for each character in the upcoming movie.

The curated playlists reveal what Clark Kent, Lex Luthor, Eve Teschmacher, Metamorpho, and The Engineer would listen to, with each selection hand-picked by Gunn himself. He also recorded commentary explaining his choices for every track.

“I’m obsessive about music so I am excited to have partnered with Spotify and created a character playlist: What the characters from Superman listen to,” Gunn said. “I probably had more fun doing this than anything else I’ve done in the past couple of years… I had to really think about who they were as people and imagine what kind of music they’d be into.”

.@Spotify asked me to create playlists for many of the characters in #Superman,...

Health and Chelsea Wolfe Release Collaborative Song “Mean”: Stream
Image
Health and Chelsea Wolfe have teamed up for the collaborative song “Mean,” their first-ever joint track.

Produced by Stint (who also produced Health’s Rat Wars LP) and mixed by Lars Stalfors, the single follows the same template as Health’s many collaborative tracks, as the group lay down a propulsive bed of electro-industrial that leaves a large creative opening for a guest singer. On “Mean” — a rather somber tune by Health’s standards — Wolfe fills in those spaces with her ethereal voice.

The single arrives following the launch of Health’s headlining “Rat Wars Expansion Tour,” including a current US leg that runs through a May 15th appearance at Welcome to Rockville. The band then heads over to Europe in June before embarking on a second stateside leg this fall. Get tickets here.

Meanwhile, the collab with Health marks Chelsea Wolfe’s first new music...

Chelsea Wolfe Performs Ethereal NPR Tiny Desk Concert: Watch
Image
Chelsea Wolfe is the latest artist to perform a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR, offering a stripped-down, four-song set showcasing tunes mostly from her latest album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She.

The singer is known for combining gothic rock, doom metal, and folk into a sound that is uniquely her own. Accompanied by longtime collaborator Ben Chisholm on piano, Wolfe played acoustic guitar on two of the songs (“Whispers in the Echo Chamber” and “Flatlands”), while setting it down for the other two tunes (“Dusk” “Place in the Sun”). Her voice sounded ethereal throughout the 15-minute concert.

Of the four songs, only the set-closer “Flatlands” was not from She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She. Wolfe reached back to 2012’s acoustic album Unknown Rooms for that performance.

As noted in NPR’s YouTube description, Wolfe added a few personal...

Image
Spiritbox have shared a pro-shot video of their earth-shattering performance of “Soft Spine” with special guest Poppy at the recent Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky. The song highlighted a set that was a clear standout among the dozens of bands that performed at the multi-day fest.

“Soft Spine” is Spiritbox’s latest single, and it finds singer Courtney Laplante in full scream mode. During the Canadian metal act’s rain-soaked set at Louder Than Life, Laplante didn’t hold back as she delivered a crushing vocal in front of the massive crowd.

Halfway through the song, Poppy walked out onstage, having just performed her own set, and screamed her lungs out, as well. The two powerful screams then came together for the remainder of the song, whipping the crowd into a frenzy.

Venamoris (Paula and Dave Lombardo) Release New Song “In the Shadows”: Stream
Image
Venamoris, the duo of legendary drummer Dave Lombardo and his wife Paula, have dropped the new song “In the Shadows,” their first release after inking a fresh record deal with Ipecac Recordings.

The brooding track showcases the husband-wife duo’s post-metal sound.

Dave’s marching drums lie at the heart of the arrangement, repeating like a trip-hop style loop under waves of synth and distant, reverb-y guitars. Paula provides the melodic vocals, and her deeper register nestles in nicely with the musical accompaniment. The dark folk/metal of Emma Ruth Rundle and Chelsea Wolfe comes to mind.

“’In The Shadows’ is a song that arose from real-life feelings,” Paula shared in a press release. “The pulsating drum wholly evocative of marching forward even when internal unrest is still close-at-hand. It is a call for self-acceptance with the heaviness of a life well lived.”

Added Dave: “Venamoris is such an intimate...

Chelsea Wolfe Announces Remix EP, Unveils “Tunnel Lights” Featuring Chino Moreno: Stream

Chelsea Wolfe has announced the Undone EP, a collection of remixes, out August 30th via Loma Vista Recordings.

A remix of “Tunnel Lights” by ††† (Crosses) — the duo of Deftones singer Chino Moreno and producer/multi-instrumentalist Shaun Lopez — can be heard now. Lopez reimagines the track with a trip-hop treatment featuring elements of trance techno and electro-industrial, while Moreno adds vocal accompaniment to Wolfe’s lead singing, which is crushed-out with distortion on this version.

The Undone EP includes six remixes of tracks from Wolfe’s latest album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, with scene mates Full of Hell, Justin K. Broadrick (Godflesh), Boy Harsher, Forest Swords, and Ash Koosha each reworking a song from the LP.

“She Reaches Out felt like the perfect record to have official remixes for since itʼs themed so heavily with transformation,” commented Wolfe in a press release.

Pearl Makes Ti West’s X Even Better
Image
“No ma’am, we don’t need Hollywood,” would-be movie producer Wayne tells his crew at the start of the horror film X. “These types of pictures turn regular folks into stars.”

The type of pictures in question are pornographic films, for which Wayne (Martin Henderson) has assembled a small cast and crew and brought them to a secluded Texas farmhouse. Set in 1979, the slasher X not only pays homage to the decade’s grisly and low-budget horror movies but it also captures a moment in which loosening obscenity laws and increased home viewing options make pornography a profitable business.

A few months after X hit theaters, director Ti West released the prequel film Pearl, which he co-wrote with star Mia Goth. Pearl takes place in 1918, long before changing mores made pornography prevalent. In fact, pornography appears only briefly in Pearl, when projectionist (future Superman David Cornswet) tries to impress...

Chelsea Wolfe in Artbound Presents: Studio A (2013)
Chelsea Wolfe She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She Review: Gothic Sturm und Drang
Chelsea Wolfe in Artbound Presents: Studio A (2013)
Chelsea Wolfe’s music is heavy. Whether it’s the neofolk of her early releases or the doom metal of 2017’s Hiss Spun, the singer-songwriter’s work is always immersed in gothic touches. Wolfe’s seventh studio album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, finds her moving in yet another sonic direction—closer to trip-hop and industrial than traditional rock—but still channeling that same witchy, backwoods spirit.

The album’s inspirations are immediately apparent on opener “Whispers in the Echo Chamber.” The timbre of Wolfe’s voice evokes that of Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, and the beat is strikingly similar to the trip-hop pioneers’ aptly titled “Machine Gun.” Throughout the track, Bryan Tulao’s metallic lead guitar helps to elevate the tension.

Wolfe and producer David Sitek give the music more space to breathe on the album’s second half. Backed by ominous piano, “Salt” is restrained but just as menacing,...

The Body and Dis Fig Announce Collaborative Album, Share “Holy Lance”: Stream
Image
Noise auteurs The Body and electronic artist Dis Fig, aka Felicia Chen, have announced the collaborative album Orchards of a Futile Heaven, arriving February 23rd via Thrill Jockey. The lead single “Holy Lance” can be streamed now.

The mysterious track offers a glimpse into the full breadth of the collab, as Chen’s voice cuts through a haze of droning noise. The tension builds to a climactic drop of feedback squalls and pulverizing guitar, with the vocals of Chen rising to match the sonic swell. Overall, the track recalls the post-metal adjacent music of Chelsea Wolfe, Myrkur, and Big|Brave, among others.

The Body and Dis Fig found common ground in their desire to make heavy music that defies “the tropes of metal and electronic music.” As heard on “Holy Lance,” they instead merged the two genres to create something altogether their own.

“I always wanted the heavier stuff but...

Chelsea Wolfe Announces New Album, Unveils “Whispers in the Echo Chamber”: Stream
Image
Chelsea Wolfe has announced her new album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, arriving February 9th as the first release on her new label home Loma Vista. Wolfe also shared the video for the album’s second single, “Whispers in the Echo Chamber.”

The new song follows the same experimental post-metal path as the LP’s lead single, “Dusk,” but features a more tangible industrial stance. A pulsing electronic drum beats sets a sparse and methodical pace, as Wolfe’s voice shimmers and sways against the dark musical backdrop. According to a press release, the vocal effect was achieved by running her voice through producer David Andrew Sitek’s modular wall and was “meant to reflect those persistent intuitive voices that start rising up within you when it’s time to step out of the old and into the new.”

The elegant black-and-white video for “Whispers in...

Chelsea Wolfe Makes Her Return With New Album ‘She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She’ on Feb. 9, 2024
Chelsea Wolfe in Artbound Presents: Studio A (2013)
At long last, Chelsea Wolfe is returning with a brand new album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, set for release on February 9, 2024, through Lomas Vista (pre-order).

Horror fans would know Wolfe as she collaborated with Ti West on the score for X and created an original track for the credits.

To kickstart the hype, Wolfe has released a gloomy new music video for the track “Whispers in the Echo Chamber”, the lead single off the album.

“Wolfeʼs seventh studio album is a rebirth in process. Itʼs a powerfully cathartic statement about cutting ties and an important reminder that healing is cyclical, not a simple linear process,” hypes the release.

As Wolfe explains, “Itʼs a record about the past self reaching out to the present self reaching out to the future self to summon change, growth, and guidance. Itʼs a story of freeing yourself from situations and...

Denzel Washington and John Lithgow in Ricochet (1991)
Doomgazers Iress Crush With New Single “Ricochet” [Listen]
Denzel Washington and John Lithgow in Ricochet (1991)
One of my favorite underground bands over the past few years is Iress, a Los Angeles-based doomgaze band that’s reminiscent of Alice in Chains with a heavy dose of 90s grunge.

Vocalist Michelle Malley has been dubbed the “Adele of Doom” by her LA music peers

Iress has generated a tremendous underground following since their 2nd self-released album, 2020’s must-hear Flaw.

The band returned from a long pandemic show break with a sold-out headlining show at LA venue The Echo and have now shared “Ricochet”, the first track on their forthcoming EP, Solace, arriving May 12 via Dune Altar Records!

“I feel emotional every time I sing ‘Ricochet’,” the singer told Buzz Bands. “I started writing it a couple years back during a really rough time in my life. When the band got their hands on it, it really transformed into something powerful. It’s a song about loss and...

The Best Movie Scores And Soundtracks Of 2022, Ranked
Image
For me, the score or soundtrack is one of the most vital pieces of a film. It doesn't just set the tone for the story — it shapes the way you feel about it. Music can pull you right out of a scene if it doesn't fit or push you over the edge if you're on the verge of tears. It can fill your heart with happiness or punch you right in the gut. Music can also make you feel completely and totally understood.

None of us would be writing for /Film if we weren't compulsive in our love of movies and TV, but of all my obsessions — which also include books and comics — music is the one that I've always had the deepest ties to. I listen to music when I do literally anything. It's my gospel, the altar at which I worship, my lifeline. I truly believe my life...

Vowws Team With Chelsea Wolfe for Haunting Ballad “Wait” [Listen]
Image
Vowws, the Los Angeles-based Australian duo heavily inspired by Quentin Tarantino and horror movie scores, has been dropping single after single as they tour alongside Deftones.

While the new album isn’t due until March, they’re offering up another taste of what’s to come with the chilling ballad, “Wait”, featuring the forever haunting Chelsea Wolfe.

Written during the height of pandemic isolation, dealing with the sadness of watching humanity turn on itself – it is a love song, a desperate call to no one, and a melancholic reflection on a time that has seemingly disappeared as we rush to forget what we may never understand.

“This is the most direct, honest song we’ve written,” the band explained. “It wasn’t meant to be a Vowws song originally, it was just an expression of feeling during a difficult time. But it took on a life of its own, especially...

‘Pearl’ – Ti West’s Prequel to ‘X’
Image
Photo: 'Pearl' In March 2020, Ti West made the 1970’s horror-inspired film ‘X.’ It is a movie that is inspired by movies like ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ Others will be reminded of Paul Thoman Anderson’s ‘Boogie Nights.’ A group of young people choose to make a pornographic film in a farmhouse owned by an elderly couple. The film is not for the faint of heart. However, those who have a strong interest in the slasher genre will succumb to its homage to 1970s grindhouse flair and the social commentary on sexuality and youth. The movie also contains a powerful score by Tyler Bates and experimental goth rock musician Chelsea Wolfe. ‘X’ captures how a murdering couple Pearl and Howard envied the youthful filmmakers who take advantage of their youth by having hardcore sex with each other. Pearl became so envious, she and Howard decided to kill the young adults one by one.

Jeff Tweedy has released a cover of Roky Erickson’s “For You (I’d Do Anything),” from the upcoming compilation, May the Circle Remain Unbroken: A Tribute to Roky Erickson, set to arrive July 17th via Light in the Attic (a special vinyl version will be released as a Record Store Day exclusive).

Tweedy offers a wholly unique take on “For You (I’d Do Anything),” doing away with the tender country pluck of Erickson’s original, and instead using a mix of synths and pianos to craft a sweet and meditative soundscape.

Supergroup Saudade Preview New Ep with Devastating Instrumental ‘Crisis’
Saudade, the supergroup/collective with a revolving door of musicians (which includes bassist Chuck Doom, Deftones’ Chino Moreno and Bad Brains’ Dr. Know), unveiled a new song, “Crisis,” from their forthcoming Ep Shadows & Light/Sanctuary Dub, out later this year.

“Crisis” is a staggering instrumental that sweeps gracefully between swaths of mesmerizing synths, pummeling double kick drums and jazz-inflected noodling that lends the track a particularly spiritual edge.

Doom — who founded Saudade — helmed the track, writing it, co-producing it with Chris Bittner and performing it with keyboardist John Medeski, guitarist...

See Chelsea Wolfe’s Aimee Mann-Inspired Video for ‘American Darkness’
Chelsea Wolfe in Artbound Presents: Studio A (2013)
Chelsea Wolfe has released her latest video for “American Darkness,” a track from her forthcoming album Birth of Violence, out September 13th.

The moody, black-and-white clip, directed by Karlos Rene Ayala, features disparate people – mostly women – dancing and expressing themselves in solitude. Wolfe says the video was inspired by the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia, where in one montage the separated characters sing along to “Wise Up” by Aimee Mann.

“I wanted our version to be explored through the lens of The Tarot,” says Wolfe. “I’ve been reading tarot...

Chelsea Wolfe Announces Witchy Return With Forthcoming Album ‘Birth of Violence’
Chelsea Wolfe in Artbound Presents: Studio A (2013)
Neofolk singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe has announced a new forthcoming album, Birth of Violence, her first record since 2017’s Hiss Spun, out September 13th.

The new album will see Wolfe stepping into “a more folk leaning sound,” according to a press statement, and her lead single and opener “The Mother Road,” described as “a harrowing ode to Route 66,” certainly suggests so. Over a haunting strumming pattern of acoustic guitar, Wolfe compares herself to “a spider in Chernobyl” and repeats a morbid resignation: “Guess I need someone to break me/Guess I...

Watch Deafheaven, Chelsea Wolfe Duet in Eerie ‘Night People’ Video
Chelsea Wolfe in Artbound Presents: Studio A (2013)
Deafheaven singer George Clarke sings with Chelsea Wolfe in the band’s “Night People” video. Director Ben Chisolm maximizes every nuance of the duo’s faces, utilizing jittery editing and dreamlike blurs as they harmonize.

The brooding piano ballad highlights Deafheaven’s recently issued fourth LP Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. The post-metal quintet are currently promoting the album on a headlining North American tour that stretches through mid-August; their next date is August 1st in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Deafheaven have concerts booked throughout the summer and fall, including a series of European/U.

Review: Deafheaven’s ‘Ordinary Corrupt Human Love’ Is a Wide-Ranging Post-Metal Fusion
Deafheaven fancy themselves as a modern-day Bad Brains, but instead of blending hardcore punk and reggae, they combine vicious black metal with expansive space rock. They alternated between the two on their 2013 breakthrough record, Sunbather, and indulged Pink Floyd proclivities like secretly recording a drug deal, before abandoning a lot of the psychedelia that made them interesting on their third record, 2015’s too-heavy-for-its-own-good New Bermuda. Now they’ve returned to their original muse and are splitting the difference between the battering-ram riffage of Darkthrone and the sparkly, soaring melodies of...

Album Review: Deafheaven’s ‘Ordinary Corrupt Human Love’
Few bands are as suitably named as Deafheaven, whose explosive mixture of black-metal ferocity, majestic melodies and complex song structures makes for a volatile and continually shifting sound. Blistering riffs, blast beats and George Clarke’s throat-shredding snarl morph into serene instrumental passages that recall Radiohead or the calmer moments from avant-metal outfits like Pelican and Mono; they’re the kind of band where you’ll adjust the volume multiple times over the course of an album or even a single song (and Deafheaven’s songs regularly break the 10-minute mark).

Those extremes are thrown into more dramatic relief than ever on the veteran Bay Area outfit’s fourth album, “Ordinary Corrupt Human Love,” which opens with a bucolic, piano-driven instrumental section (including a female spoken-word voiceover) that doesn’t shift into aggro mode until the end. Indeed, the band’s quiet side is more prominent here than on any...

Chelsea Wolfe doubles down on darkness for Hiss Spun
Chelsea Wolfe’s music has made a steady progression to darker and heavier sounds. Her last record, 2015’s Abyss, came across like an assured embrace of the doom-metal tendencies that had always infused her gothic drone-folk sounds since the lo-fi arrival of The Grime And The Glow. It lent thundering percussion and…
