Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård opened up about his long-awaited return as Pennywise in the upcoming HBO spinoff series Welcome to Derry. Skarsgård first portrayed the shape-shifting demon clown in Warner Bros.’ blockbuster It franchise.
During a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Skarsgård revealed what it was like reprising the fan-favorite villain again, after five years since It Chapter Two made its theatrical debut. He explained that it was kind of weird to be working with the same people he worked with during the It movies. “It was strange to be back. [Producers] Andy and Barbara Muschietti were doing the show, and I adore them. Most of the crew was the same people that did the movies. So it was this weird thing of going back to this gang of people that you created this thing with.”

Patrick Hockstetter is a character in Stephen King's It who is depicted as a sociopathic killer more terrifying than Pennywise the clown. Hockstetter's disturbing crimes include murdering his newborn brother, torturing animals, and meeting a gruesome end at the hands of Pennywise. The It movies omit many of Hockstetter's dark deeds, but showcase his demise at the hands of Pennywise in a terrifying encounter.
This article discusses child abuse, bullying, and the murder of both infants and animals.
There are few monsters in Stephen King's canon as terrifying as Pennywise, the infamous clown from his classic horror novel It. A cosmic being millions of years old, he lurks in the sewers beneath the fictional town of Derry, Maine, rising every 27 years to murder children and wreak havoc before returning to a state of hibernation. He feeds on fear, using the faade of a clown to hide a whirling kaleidoscope of horrifying forms.

Welcome to Derry will be Warner Bros.' It franchise's first expansion, set decades before Andy Muschietti's two-part film adaptation. While not much is known about the prequel series, director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour recently teased that Welcome to Derry will be as scary as the movies.
In an interview with Screen Rant to discuss his work on the FX series, Shgun, Osei-Kuffour was asked about his involvement in the highly-anticipated It prequel series. While he noted that he couldn't "really talk about that," he did share that the television medium allowed for the show to focus "more about the characters, it's very, very character-driven." He added, "I've enjoyed preparing for that show, and I think audiences will be as scared as they are in the original movies, and Andy Muschietti's handprints are all over this series. So, I think people will be very excited for the series. [Mike Flanagan and Andy Muschietti] are quite similar.

“Shōgun” is officially in the drama race for the Primetime Emmys.
FX has confirmed that the once limited or anthology series heavyweight has been officially submitted and accepted in the drama categories, where it will compete against Netflix’s “The Crown,” Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Prime Video’s “Fallout.” In addition, the network has shared exclusively with Variety the complete list of 40 Emmy submissions, which includes six submissions for directing, four for writing, and two eligible guest actors. Welcome to Derry will focus more on character-driven storytelling than the It movies, according to director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr. The episodic TV format will allow for long-form storytelling and better character arcs, building a sense of dread and dramatic weight. The show has the opportunity to flesh out Pennywise's backstory, explore his origin story, and delve into his impact on the history and culture of Derry.
Welcome to Derry director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr. has teased how the It prequel show will compare to the movies. Following the box-office success of It and It: Chapter 2, director Andy Muschietti has joined with sister Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs to develop the Welcome to Derry prequel show for HBO. While the It movies served as adaptations of Stephen King's legendary horror novel, the prequel show is set to shed more light on the character of Pennywise the Clown and his backstory.

Official companion podcasts for popular TV series are not a recent phenomenon. Ever since networks realized that they couldn’t leave all the analytical fun to fans, big time TV shows have been accompanied by network-sponsored audio complements.
HBO has been a frequent producer with podcasts for its dramas like Watchmen, House of the Dragon, Succession, and more. Other networks have since gotten in on the action like Paramount Network with Yellowstone, Showtime with Dexter: New Blood, and Apple TV+ with For All Mankind.
The acclaimed American TV brand FX, however, never seemed too keen on official tie-in podcasting despite presenting many intriguing prospects over the years like The Bear and Fargo. That all changed this year when the Disney-owned company launched FX’s Shōgun: The Official Podcast to accompany the weekly release of its epic miniseries Shōgun.

This article contains spoilers for Shogun episode 8.
Nobody on Shōgun can accept that Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) has given up. The crises facing the great daimyo are overwhelming: his enemies are gathering in Osaka, his army has been decimated by an earthquake, and his own half-brother has betrayed him. But this is Lord Toranaga we’re talking about here! Surely the soft-spoken falconer has a plan to come out on top.
Well it turns out that Toranaga does indeed have a plan to come out on top. It just can’t proceed until everyone has well and truly accepted that he’s been defeated. And to pull off that grand trickery, something truly tragic has to happen…and happen it does in Shōgun‘s heartbreaking eighth episode “The Abyss of Life.”
No, we’re not referring to the accidental death of Toranaga’s son Nagakado (Yuki Kura), though that is quite tragic.

Of all the shows Mike Flanagan and his production company Intrepid Pictures made for Netflix – The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and the upcoming The Fall of the House of the Usher – the Christopher Pike-inspired The Midnight Club was the only one that was designed to be an ongoing series. The finale left the story wide open to continue… so of course Netflix went ahead and cancelled it. But Flanagan had said that if the show wasn’t renewed, he would go online and spill all of the details on what they had planned for season 2. True to his word, Flanagan took to Tumblr to reveal the Midnight Club season 2 plans soon after Netflix confirmed the show is over.

Mike Flanagan typically shies away from jump scares in his horror, but he’s breaking all the rules with Netflix’s “The Midnight Club.”
The premiere episode of Flanagan’s latest series, co-created with Leah Fong, just set a Guinness World Record for the most scripted jump scares in a single episode of television.
“The Midnight Club” is available to stream now on Netflix.
The episode that earned the distinction, “The Final Chapter,” clocks in 21 jump scares in rapid succession during a very J-horror inspired tale. Flanagan and his creative team were presented with a certificate by a Guinness representative for the accomplishment.
Flanagan told Deadline in a statement, ““I thought, ‘We’re going to do all of them at once, and then if we do it right, a jump scare will be rendered meaningless for the rest of the series.’ It’ll just destroy it. Kill it finally until it’s dead,...

Plot: At a hospice with a mysterious history, the eight members of the Midnight Club meet each night at midnight to tell sinister stories – and to look for signs of the supernatural from the beyond.
Review: It probably goes without saying that at this point, people are going to watch The Midnight Club simply because Mike Flanagan’s name is attached to it. After the acclaim for The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor was met with a slightly less enthusiastic welcome. But, Flanagan’s Midnight Mass was a masterpiece of storytelling. If the pattern holds, The Midnight Club would be a weaker entry into the horror maestro’s oeuvre of shows. Luckily, I am glad to say that the series has broken expectations. The Midnight Club is nothing like any of Flanagan’s previous films or series but impresses nonetheless by combining an original...

The name "Mike Flanagan" might as well be a license to print money these days, with "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," "Gerald's Game," "Doctor Sleep," and just about anything else he's ever put his name on developing massive and dedicated fanbases. For the most part, Flanagain deals with the horrors of adulthood, but his new Netflix series "The Midnight Club" has him firmly in the teen sphere. Based on the book of the same name by prolific YA horror author Christopher Pike, "The Midnight Club" sees a group of terminally ill youngsters sharing scary stories with one another in hospice to pass the time, coming face to face with the ghastly horrors of their own creation.

Nobody's telling horror stories quite like Mike Flanagan right now. His films and TV shows are equal parts heartbreaking and terrifying. His characters are often holding onto deep-seated emotional wounds, many of which are brought painfully to the surface in the face of some monstrous threat or supernatural danger. Even when he's adapting the works of literary titans like Stephen King and Shirley Jackson, Flanagan carefully re-works and re-purposes the source material, making it firmly his own.
His latest Netflix series, "The Midnight Club," once again sees Flanagan adapting someone else's work, this time that of Christopher Pike's 1994 young adult horror novel of the same name, with "Once Upon a Time" alum Leah Fong serving as the show's co-creator. Flanagan was among the young readers who took to Pike's book upon its release and he's been hoping to adapt it to the screen ever since. With its premiere...

Netflix and Mike Flanagan introduce “The Midnight Club” this Halloween, a series adaptation of Christopher Pike‘s 1994 novel that will also adapt other Pike stories. “The Midnight Club” is set to premiere on October 7, and Empire Online has just shared a new image along with fresh insights from Flanagan.
“One of the big things we assumed was that the younger viewers could handle scares,” Flanagan tells Empire, indicating that the terror of his latest series hasn’t been toned down for a younger audience. He says of Pike’s work in general, “He wrote some pretty advanced stuff for his younger readers, and it was not at all uncommon for his teenage characters to die, pretty shockingly. His books were full of things I found really exciting and thrilling and dark.”
“So I became a bit of an addict,” Flanagan adds.

For much of the world, 2020 has embodied the exact traits of a well-crafted horror movie: twisted, uncompromising, and something nobody really saw coming. If nothing else, the unsettling nature of a year that has been hobbled by both a global pandemic and a divisive election cycle (among other eerie twists) is a reminder that scariness comes in many forms, and the traditional horror formula that many of us celebrate on Halloween is just one piece of the equation. Many of the movies released this year are scary in unexpected ways, either because they tap into timely anxieties or illustrate the precise nature of terror in these uncertain times.
Here are 13 recent disturbing highlights. Don’t watch them alone.
“Antebellum”
Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz’s feature debut may lack subtlety, but often makes up for it with a bone-chilling terror that suggests everything onscreen is very real. The Janelle Monae-starring...

The Brain That Wouldn’t Die: Osei-Kuffour Explores Emotional Resonance in Savvy Medical Thriller
Horror and science-fiction have often been stomping grounds for exploring fantastic ideas with miraculous medical and technological breakthroughs, often displaying a suspension of disbelief in B-movie trappings which sometimes eventually seem prescient.
From Jules Verne to Paul Verhoeven, what were once lofty incredulities have either been surpassed or are morphing into helpful or insidious advancements. In the case of Black Box, the assured directorial debut of Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, the experimental treatment at the heart of the narrative seems eerily plausible, even if previously explored in something which once seemed more frivolous in Total Recall (1990), for instance.…...

This week, Amazon Prime Video welcomed two of the first installments of their Welcome to the Blumhouse film series, The Lie and Black Box. The latter, which was co-written and directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, is centered around a father (Mamoudou Athie) struggling with amnesia who undergoes a radical medical treatment being overseen by the ambitious Doctor Brooks (Phylicia Rashad) that will hopefully help restore his memories, but his experiences inside the titular contraption leave him questioning his identity and more.
During the recent press day for Black Box, Daily Dead spoke with Osei-Kuffour about how this project initially came together, as well as his experiences collaborating with Rashad and his approach to Black Box’s unique visual style.
Congratulations on the film, Emmanuel. Was this project brought to you, or was this something that you sought out? I'm just curious how Black Box initially came together.
