On a brisk April afternoon in the East Village, Griffin Dunne steps through a portal to his past. He has hustled up the stairs of an East Village tenement too old for elevators despite its gentrified gleam. The hallways are narrow but clean and the doors look modern, new — until we arrive at the apartment we’re seeking. Layers of chipped paint speak of the passage of decades. The threshold is uneven — an entry to an era of slanting wooden floors, fire escape patios and bathrooms the size of closets. Inside, hats of fantastic shapes and sizes dot the blue walls, and everywhere there are books and flyers about Blondie, the Pyramid Club, Candy Darling, David Wojnarowicz, etc. Here is the habitat of a performance artist, impeccably preserved for decades and in fact still very much in use.

You never see the color blue in “Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies,” an unassuming slice-of-life family drama in brittle black and white. But Edward Burns still dares you to imagine the soothing shade stretching over the nearly identical middle-class homes of a commuter town outside of New York, symmetrically assembled with unexceptional yards rubbing shoulders with one another. For a film that has more quiet distress than cheeriness in store, this resembles an ironically happy image once considered in color. But through a low-key rhythm that informs much of his fiercely independent work, including that of “The Brothers McMullen” (the actor-writer-director’s 1995 Sundance-winning breakout),
Attentively shot by William Rexer with elegant lighting and deep contrasts — a sweeping look in a modestly-scoped film that warrants a big screen — it all starts with alcohol inside a domesticated kitchen that could be out of a “Pleasantville”-ish 1950s. We watch as Tina mixes...

“Mozart in the Jungle” is ending its four-season run, marking the first cancellation under Amazon’s new chief Jennifer Salke, the streaming network said.
“We are so proud of the four seasons we made of this show and are grateful to the cast, crew, fans and Amazon for writing this symphony with us. We hope people will keep finding the show for years to come,” executive producers Paul Weitz, Will Graham, Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman said in a statement.

Salke — who stepped in to oversee all television and film production at Amazon in February after serving six years as entertainment president at NBC — has voiced her intent to pivot Amazon from niche projects to big-budget epics on the scale of “Game of Thrones.”
The comedy-drama series was inspired by “Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music,” the 2005 memoir of oboist Blair Tindall. Gael Garcia Bernal, Lola Kirke, Saffron Burrows, Hannah Dunne and Peter Vack also star.
The first season of “Mozart” was both a critical darling and a hit with viewers, winning two Golden Globes — one for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical and a second for Garcia Bernal for Best Actor — and scoring a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73 out of 100 on Metacritic.

Some thoughts on the latest episode of Horace and Pete coming up just as soon as we let the wine breathe... So what differentiates Horace and Pete's second act from its first? Alan Alda and Jessica Lange are still listed in the cast credits, after all (though Marsha could certainly return), and previous installments had already made clear that, as with Louie, an episode of this show can be about anything, and feel completely different from any of the ones before it. But some time has passed since Uncle Pete's funeral. Sylvia's hair is gone from cancer treatments, and she appears to be living with Horace — and, thus, reluctantly going along with his plan for the three of them to run the bar. And Pete, who's at the center of everything, is feeling healthy enough to give online dating a try, and is surprised — and, in a nice twist,...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s legion of fans will get their chance to see the filmmaker’s latest Inherent Vice – at least those in New York and L.A. after a long build-up of anticipation. Studio Warner Bros. is handling the director’s latest, set in a drug-laced L.A. in the 1970s. Amazon has announced the debut date for its original series, "Mozart in the Jungle." All 10 episodes from the dramatic comedy will being streaming on December 23rd and be available to all Amazon Prime members. The first episode of "Mozart in the Jungle" is, in fact, already streaming for everyone as Amazon put the pilot online as it does with all shows it is considering picking up. The ever-growing online outlet then utilizes audience feedback in their decision making about which projects should go forward. This series is based on the memoir "Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music" by Blair Tindell and stars Lola Kirke as a young oboist in the New York Symphony. It is through her eyes that we see a new conductor, played by Gael Garcia Bernal, take over the orchestra and utilize a radically different approach. Naturally, many are uncomfortable with the conductor and the pivot.
