The Unexpecteds (2024) Review — A Caper Comedy That Doesn’t Quite Reach It’s Potential
Image
The Unexpecteds is one of those films you wish they would remake instead of a classic. That’s not to put the film down. Far from it. You see the potential in writer and director Alejandro Montoya Marin’s first feature-length film. The story is timely and engaging, and the script has some well-timed jokes. However, this comedy caper never quite reaches its potential.

The reason is glaring and obvious—the cast’s flat and wooden performances. And that’s a shame because this “Dumb Money Light” could have been something embraced. If only the cast could have found the heart of the matter, at least enough for the audience to embrace the characters from The Unexpecteds and care.

Carrie Coon Boards Postpartum Comedy ‘Another Happy Day’; Natasha Leggero Among New Additions To Action Comedy ‘The Unexpecteds’ – Film Briefs
Image
Exclusive: Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age) is set to appear opposite Lauren Lapkus in Another Happy Day, a postpartum depression comedy marking the feature debut of writer-director Nora Fiffer, which wrapped production last summer in Chicago and will make its world premiere at the Vail Film Festival this Saturday, December 9th.

The film centers on Joanna (Lapkus), a “total nut” who is wearing new motherhood so awkwardly that she remarks candidly “I’m not really a mom, I just have a baby, you know?” This new mom is also an artist who isn’t making any art, and feels truly terrible at taking care of her newborn, as she stumbles through her days. She can’t get her old job back, her old friends have moved on without her, her husband thinks he’s a better mother than she is, she’s terribly sleep deprived, and her baby won’t look at her.

Meet She-Hulk's Supervillain Support Group & Their Comic Book Counterparts
Image
This article contains spoilers for the seventh episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law."

The latest episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law" expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some significant ways with obscure parts of the comic book canon. When Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is called upon to visit her client Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), she encounters a supervillain support group. The reformed "Incredible Hulk" antagonist is now dishing out treatment for fellow villains who want to turn their life around. Instead of an episode where She-Hulk battles some baddies, Walters is forced to reconcile with her own insecurities with the help of a close-knit group of supervillains that are pulled straight from the source material.

"She-Hulk" uses a bevy of lesser-known characters from the Marvel Comics canon to fill out the roster seen in the seventh episode. From Man-Bull to the Porcupine, there is a lot to unpack (and...

Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Robert Rodriguez Returns to His Low Budget Roots for Next Movie
Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez helped give birth to the "indie film" movement with his iconic 1992 film El Mariachi, which he shot on a budget of just $7,000. To help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of this indie classic, the filmmaker is going back to his roots to make a new $7,000 film, along with five new filmmakers as part of his upcoming TV series Rebel Without a Crew, which will air on his own El Rey Network. Not only do the filmmakers have to make their film on such a meager budget, but they must also do so literally without a crew.

Robert Rodriguez will join filmmakers Scarlet Moreno, Alejandro Montoya Marin, Bola Ogun, Bonnie-Kathleen Ryan, and Josh Stifter in this endeavor, which is designed to mentor and inspire a new wave of independent filmmakers. Rodriguez created his first feature-length film El Mariachi on a budget of just $7,000. To mark the 25th anniversary of the film,...

Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Robert Rodriguez Will Return to His Low-Budget Roots for New Feature With $7K Price Tag
Robert Rodriguez in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez infamously made his first feature, the lauded 1992 indie “El Mariachi,” for the paltry sum of just $7,000. Even twenty-five years ago, that was hardly the kind of budget filmmakers dreamed about, but Rodriguez managed to turn limited money into a signature feature that helped launch his career. And now he wants to do the same for other rising stars — with a big twist.

On the upcoming unscripted series “Rebel Without a Crew,” producer Rodriguez will challenge five filmmakers — including Scarlet Moreno, Alejandro Montoya Marin, Bola Ogun, Bonnie-Kathleen Ryan, and Josh Stifter — to make their own films for just $7,000, with zero crew to be found. It’s a wild enough idea, but one that comes with a real kicker: per a new press release, Rodriguez himself will participate in the challenge and also make a new film for just $7,000.
