Avenged (2013) Review

Director: Michael S. Ojeda

Writers: Michael S. Ojeda, Deon van Rooyen (additional dialogue)

Stars: Amanda Adrienne, Tom Ardavany, Ronnie Gene Blevins

This is how it is: An attractive and deaf woman by the name of Zoe (Amanda Adrienne) is on a road trip to her boyfriend when she comes across a bunch of local yokels tormenting some Native Americans. Zoe does the valiant thing in trying to save their lives and in turn, gets captured and taken back to the local’s shack where she is repeatedly brutalized.

Yeah, it certainly sounds like your typical revenge horror-thriller, only it isn’t: Avenged takes a strange turn when our heroine is brutally killed, only to be brought back to life a few days later (expertly edited here to show the passage of time, by the way) by a local witch-doctor. The catch? She...

Avenged Review
Who knows why it took so long for Michael S. Ojeda’s spiritual remake of The Crow to hit wider audiences, but after two long years of festival screenings and showcases, Avenged (formerly Savaged) has become a valuable example of perseverance and gritty determination. It’s not often that I’m completely taken aback by visual brutality, but credit Ojeda with knocking each redemptive slaughter out of the park when it comes to confident, 80s-style effects work. You’ve got to admire a filmmaker who relies on good ol’ fashioned practical gooeyness whenever his violent vixen screams her wicked war cry, and Avenged showcases some of the most creative bodily chaos I’ve seen in a good while. It’s I Spit On Your Grave with a Native American twist – talk about reparations!

Amanda Adrienne stars as Zoe, a deaf woman en route to a new life with her patiently-waiting lover.

Review: Savaged
Revenge films are one of the gold standard sub-genres in horror, especially ones with female protagonist committing all manner of gruesome violence against the people, usually men, which have assaulted her. Director Michael S. Ojeda crafts his version a little different this time with a supernatural twist that involves the possession of a deaf, and left for dead, woman by the spirit of a Native American warrior who is seeking revenge. Ojeda doesn’t try to reinvent the genre, but instead makes a vicious and inventive film that is a recent standout in the over-saturated category.

Zoe (Amanda Adrienne) is on a road trip across the desert, making her way to an eager boyfriend, when she witnesses a young Native American man running for his life from a gang of men chasing him in a truck. Zoe intervenes, trying to get the young man into her car, but is halted...

Wff 2013: Savaged Is Brutal [Review]
I love a good revenge thriller as much as the next person but I'm tired of the rape/revenge thriller, especially ones that bring very little of interest or new to the table and though Savaged does play in The Crow wheelhouse with the addition of a supernatural element, it's an incessantly violent mess that only gets worse after the opening act.

Amanda Adrienne stars as Zoe, a mute woman travelling across the desert to start the next phase of her life with her fiancé. While on route she comes up on a group of hicks hunting down a pair of Indian men and being the nice woman that she is, she stops to help the victims only to find herself a victim as well - like they were just going to stop and let her get away with their prey. She eventually escapes, is killed and then [Continued ...]...

FEARnet Movie Review: 'Savaged'
Avenged (2013)
If you only judged by the first 25 minutes of the colorfully harsh new indie horror movie Savaged, you'd probably be tempted to dismiss it as yet another effectively ugly, bleak, and unpleasant "rape / revenge" movie -- but that'd be a pretty stupid thing to do. Who the hell judges a whole film on the first 25 minutes?

As a person who has a pretty short attention span for movies that wallow in rape and degradation, I was pleased to notice that Michael S. Ojeda's Savaged had more on its mind than just sexual abuse. Sure, the film starts out much like films called I Spit On Your Grave or The Last House on the Left (a pretty young woman is brutally attacked by a gang of scummy backwoods hicks), and, yes, it ends Act I with a quick, disturbing rape scene, but even at the peak of its gruesomeness, there's...
