The biggest struggle that Tarot-based horror films suffer from, apart from the fact that none of them seem to understand how Tarot works, is how to translate prophetic doom into a compelling story. Inevitably these films take a page from Final Destination: an omnipotent threat that can’t be seen or touched picks off a group of friends until they finally get wise and confront the individual who dealt the cards. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Alas, Tarot Curse writers Dean Loftis and Mary O’Neil do very little to shake up the formula and the result is a frustrating 90-minute film that plays it far too safe.
Much like last summer’s theatrical release Tarot, this film features a loosely connected group of friends who have their fortunes read and then are systematically killed according to the cards. Here it’s students attending Robson, a private high school, and includes...

San Diego’s Comic-Con International is the biggest event in the world devoted to genre pop culture. While the big Hollywood movies get the most mainstream press, there’s also a large, lesser known and promoted Independent Film Festival devoted to genre short films tucked away within the overall convention.
The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.
The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.
Programming blocks are broken up by genre and the full film lineup below gives the exact starting time of each short film. There’s also one feature film screening this year,...

People who are constantly struggling to lose weight can face cruel ridicule by their peers, particularly younger teens who are still learning to adjust to middle school and high school. The negative emotional effects bullying has on younger teens can be psychologically damaging, but the film industry has been teaching them recently that they’re not alone, and there are people who care about them. First time feature film director Jason Winn’s new drama ‘The Fat Boy Chronicles,’ which is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Diane Lang and Michael Buchanan, follows 14-year-old Jimmy Winterpock, played by Christopher Rivera. Jimmy, who weighs 187 pounds, is often bullied [ Read More ]...
