Making movies is challenging, and making a splash at the box office is even harder. On paper, a John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas as a lethal soldier of the Ruska Roma sounds like a guaranteed money-maker. However, audiences are fickle, and going to the cinema is expensive, even if you’re sneaking snacks from the Bulk Barn and requesting sparkling water instead of Coca-Cola. Despite positive reviews and solid word of mouth, Armas’s Ballerina stumbled at the box office. Thankfully, Ballerina is already Jetéing to the top of the PVOD charts.
According to FlixPatrol, Ballerina finished second on iTunes in the United States on July 1 and July 2. The action-packed film finished third on Vudu and seventh on Amazon on July 2.
Produced on a reported $90 million budget, Ballerina danced to a $110 million take at the worldwide box office. These aren’t the numbers you’d expect from a John Wick spin-off,...

Four fresh faces have joined the cast of dark psychological thriller The Silence Game, from New Life writer/director John Rosman and producer T. Justin Ross.
Santiago Segura, Gabrielle Byndloss, Chris Webster, and Emily Rose have joined Tony Cavalero (“The Righteous Gemstones”), Sarah Yarkin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Nicholas Cirillo (Black Mirror) in the cast of The Silence Game.
It follows a disillusioned young man who, after following a mysterious woman into a camp of outsiders, falls under the influence of a charismatic leader preaching virtue through The Silence Game, an unnerving game with straightforward but terrifying rules.
Rosman writes and directs.
The director’s feature debut, New Life, became a film festival darling in 2023, earning critical acclaim for its fresh take on the thriller genre. The film was acquired by Brainstorm Media and is currently streaming on Hulu. I wrote in my New Life review that “Rosman’s assured debut deftly blends genres,...

It’s no secret that The Umbrella Academy has honed the art of balancing emotion with absurdity. Season 4 of Netflix’s sci-fi mystery dramedy garnered rather polarizing reviews for its alleged disappointing ending. But I’m still willing to defend the show with everything that I have for its convincing alternate timelines, dysfunctional sibling dynamics, and time travel.
Amid all the mayhem, though, there was one storyline I just could not stomach: the deeply disturbing romantic pairing of Five and Lila. For a show that rarely ever misses a beat, this unsettling arc stood out like a sore thumb. While we have previously endured Reginald and Kalus’ twisted love-hate relationship, this one feels much worse. Let’s break down what made this pairing seem so out of place.

It's Splitsville for one couple, and maybe two, in the first trailer for Michael Angelo Covino's new sex comedy. Dakota Johnson (Materialists) and Adria Arjona (Andor) star as a pair of women whose husbands make utter fools of themselves in the film, which mines comedy from the concept of an open marriage. Splitsville made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and will premiere in theaters on August 22. As the trailer opens, Ashley (Arjona) asks Carey for a divorce. To say he doesn't take it well would be an understatement: he gets out of the car and runs away, eventually ending up at the luxurious home of their friends Paul (Covino) and Julie (Johnson).
They reveal that the secret to the success of their own marriage is that they're non-monogamous. So that means Paul should be cool with it when Carey ends up in bed with Julie,...

If you’re open to it, Neon’s upcoming comedy “Splitsville” out of Cannes promises to examine the absurd inner workings of two couples who are opening up the relationship.
As seen in the new trailer out Monday, Kyle Marvin and Adria Arjona’s marriage isn’t working out so well — but luckily, their friends Michael Angelo Covino and Dakota Johnson are trying out non-monogamy and are more than happy to share what they’ve learned.
Unfortunately for everyone involved, though, they may not be as open to sharing as they appear, as evident by the blood on the carpet, the broken window and the broken table.
While the trailer paints this movie more as a double date, in his positive Cannes review of “Splitsville” for TheWrap, Ben Croll called the film “a bromance between creative collaborators looking to pique each other’s sensibility and screen-persona.”
“After rising with the 2019 bro-down ‘The Climb,...

Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona are continuing their respective indie reigns: After Arjona stole scenes in “Blink Twice” (and now appears in “Andor”), and just as Johnson is helping make box office history at A24 with “Materialists,” both actresses are adding in yet another critically acclaimed hit to their summer resume with “Splitsville.”
The comedy was first announced in 2024 and recently premiered at Cannes 2025. Michael Angelo Covino directs and co-writes with his “The Climb” collaborator Kyle Marvin; the duo also star alongside Johnson and Arjona as their respective spouses in “Splitsville.”

This story contains Spoilers for Ballerina.
Ballerina director Len Wiseman shared one of his original ideas for the John Wick spinoff’s ending sequences, which would have introduced another character. The filmmaker is no stranger to the action genre, after previously directing two Underworld movies, 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard, and 2012’s Total Recall.
During a recent interview with EW, Wiseman opened up about his alternate ending idea, which involves Eve’s supposedly dead mother. This scrapped ending’s surprising twist will not only reveal that Eve’s mother was alive all along, but it would have also shown Eve’s mother as the one who ordered the hit on her.
"At one point I had [in the script] that she meets her mother, and we never got there,” he said. “We were maybe going to shoot the scene, but that's always something that we hear, her mother's dead, but in this world,...

Warning! Spoilers for "Ballerina" follow.
The villains of the "John Wick" films are largely incidental. They can be effective challenges for Mr. Wick (Keanu Reeves), but no one goes to these movies for the bad guys. We go to see John blow them away. Does the new spin-off "Ballerina" change that?
The primary villain of "Ballerina" is a man called the Chancellor. True to his title, the Chancellor leads a community of assassins based in the Austrian mountains. Eve's (Ana de Armas) late mother was a member of the Chancellor's community but tried to leave with her husband, Javier (David Castañeda). The Chancellor came to retrieve Eve and murdered Javier, but Eve escaped to be raised by the Ruska Roma mafia.
Our Ballerina now wants revenge on the man who murdered her father. It's a tale as old as time — definitely much more old hat than tearing through the New...

The following contains spoilers for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, now playing in theatersBallerina director Len Wiseman already has plans for a potential sequel. The fifth movie in the John Wick franchise diverges from Wick's (Keanu Reeves) story to focus primarily on Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), as she attempts to avenge her father (David Castañeda). Though Eve does manage to achieve her revenge, she is left in a precarious position in its final scene, as the Cult elects to place a bounty on her head, due to her involvement in the Chancellor's (Gabriel Byrne) death.
While the movie teases Eve's next steps, Wiseman has thoroughly planned out where Eve's story will take her. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director explained that "you don't walk off into the sunset very easily," so Eve will have to "deal with the consequences of her actions." It’s been 11 years since John Wick introduced us to a grieving hitman who just wanted to mourn his wife and pet his dog in peace. That small film, directed by Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad, sparked a full-blown action franchise, resurrected Keanu Reeves’ career, and added “gun-fu” to the pop culture dictionary. Now, after four adrenaline-drenched films and a misfired detour in the form of The Continental, we’re back in that violent, suit-tailored universe with Ballerina, a new spin-off that gives Ana de Armas all the powers of Baba Yaga. Just like the first film in the franchise, the story here is straightforward. Eve Macarro lives with her father, Javier Macarro (David Castañeda), near the coast, protected by the surrounding waters and the army of guards around their home. But things take a turn for the worse when The Chancellor (Gabriel Byrne) comes looking for Javier.
Plot: Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), an assassin who’s part of the notorious Ruska Roma, seeks vengeance on the network of killers who murdered her parents.
Review: Ballerina is one of the more satisfying franchise spin-offs in recent memory. In this era of IP, every studio is desperate to max out the potential sequels and spinoffs their key franchises can handle, and Lionsgate has a whole slew planned around the John Wick franchise. Yet, what makes Ballerina different is that this doesn’t feel like much of a derivative of the franchise, given that Keanu Reeves was coaxed back to reprise his role. While his contribution to the film is mainly limited to the last act, his involvement is far more than a cameo, with him having a legitimate supporting role, giving the movie a welcome sense of legitimacy.
The movie takes place between the third and fourth John Wick movies.

You’ve got to love Anjelica Huston, wearing pounds of power jewelry and Cher-strength makeup as a Ruska Roma crime queen known only as “The Director,” putting a young ballet student through her pirouette paces until her toes have bled clean through her satin pointe shoes. “Tend to your wounds before you get sepsis and we have to cut off your feet,” the Director intones in a lugubrious Belarusian accent. If the dizzying crescendo of intricately choreographed fight scenes is the main attraction in Ballerina, it’s those occasional moments of dry humor that make it a welcome extension of the John Wick universe.

Michael Angelo Covino’s open marriage comedy “Splitsville” brought much-needed laughter to Cannes on Monday night, earning a warm six-minute ovation.
As the applause roared, director Covino teared up and Dakota Johnson comforted him with a hug as he kissed her on the cheek.
It was Johnson’s first time in Cannes, but as a Venice Film Festival veteran she’s no stranger to applause. Even still, she humbly waved off the cheers when the camera panned to her first. Then, when Arjona got her roar of approval, her boyfriend Jason Momoa could be seen clapping enthusiastically in the row behind her. Covina and Marvin shared a brotherly embrace as they celebrated another well-received collaboration.
“We need to keep making comedies for Cannes, plain and simple. Because laughter should be seen in a theater, not on a television screen,” said Covino.

When it comes to blockbusters, it's not uncommon to hear about big movies undergoing reshoots. Whenever that happens, we immediately think that it means bad news and that studio heads are having second thoughts about the story, but that's certainly not always the case. During a new press junket to promote Ballerina, Ian McShane (Deadwood) spoke to Collider's Perri Nemiroff about his experience with reshoots and what it meant for the story of the upcoming spin-off movie.
During the interview, McShane explained to Nemiroff how the Ballerina reshoots helped define Winston's relationship with Ana de Armas' titular character. We've seen different versions of McShane's character in both the John Wick film series and The Continental TV show, but this time we will see him looking out for a newcomer. When asked about whether Winston's relationship with Eve (de Armas) unlocked a new layer of the character, McShane stated:

Early box office projections for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina have been revealed. While, at a quick glance, the opening weekend tracking is nothing remarkable from the franchise, a closer look will tell a much different story.
Per Deadline, Ballerina is currently tracking for an opening weekend between $35 million and $40 million at the domestic box office. The bad news is that a $40 million opening would mark a steep drop for the John Wick franchise, given that Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 debuted with $56.8 million and $73.8 million back in 2019 and 2023, respectively. However, the good news is that spinoffs typically open lower than main entries, with Ballerina's current projections similar to fellow offshoots The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ($44.6M) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ($42.1M). Lionsgate also has three more weeks to promote Ballerina with stars Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves, which will likely...

Lionsgate has released the final trailer for Ballerina and it's easily the best one yet as we finally get to see Ana de Armas step into the fire and unleash her rage on a wide range of killers, including the legendary John Wick (Keanu Reeves).
In the film, she plays Eve Macarro, a young woman training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma. However, when she learns the truth behind her family's murder, she embarks on a one-woman mission to avenge her fallen loved ones or die trying.
Tickets are now on sale, with early premium large format screenings taking place on Wednesday, June 4! The runtime has also been confirmed, with the film clocking in at 125 minutes.
Early tracking numbers are currently projecting an opening weekend in the $39 million to $48 million range, with $45 million being the current target launch. If that holds, it would be the third-largest opening weekend for the franchise,...

Lionsgate has released the final trailer for its hotly anticipated John Wick spinoff movie Ballerina. Ana de Armas headlines the upcoming spinoff, which takes place concurrently with 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
"When you think of me, you should think of fire," warns de Armas' Eve Macarro at the beginning of the trailer, which sees the young assassin staring at Keanu Reeves' John Wick, who is staring back at her through the scope of his gun. Past marketing for Ballerina has teased the fight sequence between Eve and John that promises to delight longtime fans of the action franchise. However, while the Wick vs. Eve fight is featured yet again, the final trailer is framed around the idea of "fire," with the title assassin shown wielding a flamethrower in one clip and fighting in a burning building in another. Check out the final Ballerina trailer below.

Ballerina opens in just about a month, and as the marketing campaign ramps up, we've received a handful of new stills from the actioner, featuring Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a young new Ruska Roma assassin that is out for revenge.
Like with any John Wick film, this one will also showcase extensive stunt work and larger than life action set pieces, none bigger than a sequence that will see the film's Academy Award-nominated star wield a flamethrower to take on a horde of baddies.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, de Armas detailed her rehearsal for the flamethrower sequence and how the whole experince absolutely shook her to her core. "I remember the first day the stunt team was practicing with the fire, and they told me to go do it before the shoot, and I said, 'No, no, no, I'll be fine,' and they got the main fire guy that gets burned,...

Was Jake Gyllenhaal stuck in a chair while shooting The Guilty? (Photo Credit – Netflix)
Shot in only 11 grueling days, the Netflix thriller pushed Jake Gyllenhaal to his absolute limit, and it all started with a chair. Speaking to The Wrap during TIFF 2021, Gyllenhaal shared how being locked into one seat for the entire shoot felt suffocating. “It was 20 pages a day shooting 20-30 minute takes. And I thrive in that space, but I was trapped in a chair. Antoine trapped me in a chair,” he recalled. Known for his full-bodied performances, Gyllenhaal struggled with being still. “Every time I wanted to move…to only be in a chair and having to express ended up doing a number on me as we got farther and farther into the story.”
The Guilty, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2021, told the story of Joe Bayler — a police detective reassigned to 911 operator duty.

Hot on the heels of those awesome Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning posters, Lionsgate has debuted twelve kickass new character posters of their own for their upcoming actioner Ballerina, which stars Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a young new Ruska Roma assassin that is out for blood as she attempts to avenge her fallen family.
Standing in her way, however, will be an entire horde of top-level killers, none bigger than the legendary Baba Yaga himself, John Wick (Keanu Reeves), who it seems will be tasked with dissuading her conquest or taking her out... permanently.
While you'll have to wait until June to find out what ultimately happens when the two square off, the film is easily one of this summer's most anticipated offerings as Ana de Armas tackles the most physically demanding role of her career - and her deadliest role since playing the fan-favorite...

"Rules and consequences."
Lionsgate has finally launched the brand new trailer for their upcoming action-thriller Ballerina, offering a killer new look at Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas (Knives Out; No Time to Die; Ghosted) heading into action as Eve Macarro, and it looks like her mission just got considerably more difficult than we imagined as she'll soon find herself up against Baba Yaga himself!
Yes, as the trailer reveals, The Director (Anjelica Huston) will send John Wick (Keanu Reeves) after Eve, in a last-ditch effort to stop her vendetta. John will offer her a choice, leave or die, and the battle commences. It certainly adds an interesting wrinkle to the film, as we were all previously under the assumption that Wick and Macarro would be allies and fight together, which could obviously still happen, but it looks like things will head into a different direction before the credits roll.

The upcoming John Wick prequel film, Ballerina, sees Norman Reedus transition from The Walking Dead to running with assassins. New images from the neo-noir thriller teases Reedus' mysterious character in the hard-hitting spinoff.
Via Lionsgate, visuals previewing Ballerina showcase Reedus' character, Daniel Pine, holding a gun and looking ready for battle in a scene from the action thriller. Other images tease Ana de Armas' eponymous protagonist, Eve Macarro/Rooney, including one scene with Eve and New York Continental Hotel owner Winston Scott (Ian McShane) in tense conversation.

Netflix has seen great success in backing supernatural dramas, with series like Stranger Things becoming absolute tentpoles for the streamer. Recently, they have commissioned Jesse McKeown – the writer on another supernatural hit, The Umbrella Academy – to write a new show in that genre.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, McKeown, who, aside from The Umbrella Academy adaptation, has written for the crime drama19-2, will head up the efforts on the untitled creature thriller. Norman Reedus has opened up about how different it was to film fight scenes for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina compared to The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
Speaking with Collider at Brazil's Ccxp, the actor shared how Ballerina's fight scenes were way more choreographed than anything he has ever had to do on The Walking Dead. "It’s a different fighting style, totally. The Walking Dead’s very sloppy, this is very choreographed and a lot of people put it together to make it safe and look spectacular," Reedus stated. "I’m pretty good with weapons after all this time, but it’s always a math problem, even on the TV show. Everything’s math. The fighting’s math. You show an arrow, bend out of frame, you come up without the arrow digitally, and you show another arrow. There’s a math there."
