Michael Buchanan

Interview: Jason Winn Talks The Fat Boy Chronicles
People who are constantly struggling to lose weight can face cruel ridicule by their peers, particularly younger teens who are still learning to adjust to middle school and high school. The negative emotional effects bullying has on younger teens can be psychologically damaging, but the film industry has been teaching them recently that they’re not alone, and there are people who care about them. First time feature film director Jason Winn’s new drama ‘The Fat Boy Chronicles,’ which is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Diane Lang and Michael Buchanan, follows 14-year-old Jimmy Winterpock, played by Christopher Rivera. Jimmy, who weighs 187 pounds, is often bullied [ Read More ]...

Recap - 'The Event': 'And Then There Were More'
In the aftermath of Thomas's missile launch, President Martinez briefs his staff about the sleeper agents. They learn that the first line of Thomas's broadcast message has been translated, and that it reads, "Preparations are being made for your arrival". Following this development, Martinez orders Sterling to return to Inostranka and interrogate the detainees for new information. In the Himalayan mountains, Thomas and Isobel visit the site of the portal array, a huge device large enough to bring all of their people to Earth. Meanwhile, Sophia and Simon discuss using Michael Buchanan to track down Thomas. Though Sophia is reluctant to trust Michael, she eventually agrees and Simon breaks Michael out of custody while he is being transferred. Michael reveals that he was previously using his position at the airline to smuggle components for the portal array through customs, (more)...

Gabrielle Carteris wins 'The Event' role
Gabrielle Carteris
Gabrielle Carteris is to play a recurring role on NBC's The Event. TV Guide reports that the actress will appear in at least two episodes as an alien named Diane Geller. When her old friend Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) teams up with Sophia (Laura Innes) to track down rogue alien Thomas (Clifton Collins, Jr. ), Diana will be tasked with caring for his daughters Leila (Sarah Roemer) and Samantha (Anna Clark). 90210′s Gabrielle Carteris to Guest on The Event
Gabrielle Carteris, who is obviously best known for voicing Elektra in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance video game, is stopping by The Event for a 2 episode arc.

Ok, the Mua thing was a joke (though she really voiced Elektra), Carteris is, of course, famous for playing Andrea Zuckerman on 90210 back in the day. She also, by the way, just turned 50 years old last month.

In The Event, she’ll be playing Diane Geller, an alien that has been living with the human popoulation. She will be an old friend of Michael Buchanan who also survived the Inostranka crash in 1944.

You can expect to see Gabrielle in the March 14 and March 21 episodes of the show. The Event is expected to return from hiatus on March 7 with brand new episodes.

Gabrielle Carteris to Guest Star on The Event
Bringing back former Beverly Hills, 90210 cast members failed miserably for the new 90210. But The Event needs any spark it can get.

TV Guide reports that Gabrielle Carteris, forever known as Andrea from the classic Fox series, will appear on at least two episodes of the NBC drama.

The 50-year old actress will debut on March 14 as an alien named Diane Geller. Look for this character to be an old friend of Michael Buchanan. She's been living among humans and will take care of Michael's children when he embarks on a mission.

Carteris most recently appeared on an episode of Criminal Minds in 2010.

Gabrielle Carteris Heading to 'The Event' and 5 Other '90s Stars We Want Back on TV
Gabrielle Carteris

'Beverly Hills, 90210' veteran Gabrielle Carteris is returning to TV in several upcoming episodes of 'The Event.' Yep, Andrea Zuckerman will be playing an alien.

According to TV Guide, Carteris will play Diane, an old friend of Michael Buchanan. When Michael and Sophia decide to hunt down Thomas in the March 21 episode, Michael leaves his kids in the care of Diane.

Carteris' upcoming turn on 'The Event' got the old nostalgia wheel turning. With Carteris on 'The Event' and Larisa Oleynik of 'Alex Mack' fame on 'Hawaii Five-0,' it's like a 1990s renaissance! Here are five other '90s TV stars we want -- no, need -- back on our TV screens for a spell.

The Event (2010)
'The Event' star promises more twists
The Event (2010)
The Event star Scott Patterson has promised that there are more twists to come involving his character Michael Buchanan. In the show's mid-season finale, it was revealed that the pilot is secretly a member of the alien race led by Sophia (Laura Innes). Patterson told the Los Angeles Times: "There's more to come. There's big stuff happening now. We just finished [episode] 13 and we're getting into 14. The big stuff's starting!" He also confirmed that Michael's daughter Leila (Sarah Roemer) is "a half-breed" and "a hybrid". "We have to find out if (more)...

'The Event': Thomas phone home
Say this for the last new episode of "The Event" for three months: The two big developments at the end of the episode weren't ones we exactly saw coming.

The twin revelations that Thomas wasn't planning an attack on the United States (at least not directly) and of the reason why Dempsey was after Leila and her little sister gave the show a nice note on which to go out. But they were more "Hmm" than "Whoa!" as these things go, and while they worked, it's hard to say whether they worked well enough to keep fans on the hook until late February.

That the show won't be back until then is not "The Event's" fault, of course, and if it were coming back sooner, then this would have been a fine bit of teasing to tide us over till, say, mid-January. But that's not what's happening, and NBC's decision...

The Event s1e10 review
“Everything Will Change”

Sophia finds out that Thomas is hiding money from her, so Thomas and Isabelle head for the hills to execute their endgame – launching a missile within range of the Us West Coast. The President and Creepy scramble to stop the launch, but can’t, only to find out that it’s not a missile at all, it’s a satellite. A communications satellite, facing the wrong way. But who would they be talking to… aha! Et just phoned home!

Sean and Leila head off to the mental hospital where the girls are being held; or were - the bad guys moved about five minutes before they got there. All of the files in the basement were burned, except for the only two relevant ones, with pictures dating back to the 1940’s, of the subjects not aging.

After a weird, alien tea ceremony with Sophia, Thomas and Isabelle...

The Event S1E8 review
"For the Good of Our Country"

We get to the bottom (okay, the middle) of the conspiracy to assassinate the President with an airplane. The President does some investigative work and finds that one of his advisors was in on it – and it’s the VP, Jarvis! (So much for building dramatic tension, hey?) Hal Holbrook tells Vicky to kill Jarvis but she talks him into confessing and selling out Hal, and he almost does, but he gets blown up in a car bomb instead. Sean gets shot but escapes capture, and Leila kidnaps a doctor to take care of him.

The President interrogates Michael Buchanan and gets a new tip - the plane crash was almost called off. The timing of the go-ahead call means that one of the President’s advisors sold him out when he wouldn’t agree to call off the alien prisoner release. VP Jarvis...

The Event Season 1 Episode 8 Review & Recap: For the Good of Our Country
Besides pacing and brooding about Blake (Zeljko Ivanek) for weeks, viewers have been wondering what Vice President Jarvis’ (Bill Smithrovich) role is in The Event. In episode 8, “For The Good of Our Country,” they wondered no more. President Martinez (Blair Underwood) questioned Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) about the assassination attempt in hopes of understanding why and who put him up to piloting the plane. But the only thing that Michael could recall was that the plan was almost cancelled but received the go-ahead call shortly before the plane took flight. The night’s first flashback revisits the pilot at Coral Gables, when the mysterious man known as Dempsey (Hal Holbrook) is revealed to be talking with Jarvis who calls in the order to prevent Martinez from announcing to the world the existence of the aliens and from closing down the facility holding them. Flashing back two years, Dempsey is seen...

The Event Review: "For the Good of Our Country"
Thomas and Sophia were surprisingly missing in this week's episode, "For the Good of Our Country."

But it's okay because The Event was still able to bring all the action and suspense that I've come to love about this show.

We learn that the government is trying to cover up what happened aboard that plane to great lengths. Even saying that Michael Buchanan is dead.

Random thoughts: What will happen if Michael is able to escape? Would the government issue him a new identity or do you think they'd rather him be killed to cover their tracks?

The President meets with Michael and finds out that he got the go ahead around 1:08 p.m. to fly the plane. This is the first clue that lets the President know there are greater forces out there working against him.

Did anyone suspect that it was the Vice President that was in on it?...

Recap - 'The Event': 'For the Good of Our Country'
The episode begins with a television report claiming that Avias flight 514 was subjected to a chemical terrorist attack. The report names one casualty - the pilot, Michael Buchanan. President Martinez meets with Blake Sterling and Vice President Jarvis to discuss recent events. While the location of Sophia and Thomas is still unknown, Blake claims that the very-much-alive Michael could provide them with answers regarding the assassination attempt on the President. Martinez insists on interrogating Michael himself and learns from the pilot that the attempt on his life was almost called off. However, a phone call at 1.08pm gave the conspirators the go-ahead. Martinez claims that the new time-frame has provided him with a clue. Jarvis asks his secretary for a transcript of the President's talk with Michael, but the file has been sealed. He retreats to his office, clearly distressed. In (more)...

The Event - Current Events - Episode 1.06 - Recap
“Oh, my!” says George Takei. What a lot to ponder from this weeks episode. Let’s go!

Walk like an Angel

Simon remarks that he is far from an angel, The seems to imply fallen angels. As mentioned previously, this is interesting.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallen_angel The origin of the term lies in the Hebrew word for "giant". The Hebrew word translated as "giants" here is nephilim, a plural, which itself derives from the root word Naphal, which means to fall.[improper synthesis?] The apocryphal Book of Enoch explains that a group of rebellious angels "left their first estate" (heaven, or the sky) and came down (fell) to Earth to marry human women and have children with them. Jude makes mention of these angels in the New Testament:

“ Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in...

Sic Transit Gloria Theatri: A Review of The Event 1.06 by Pearson Moore
Simon Lee saved the day.

Simon was at the centre of the episode from beginning to end. His coffee shop ruse was brilliant. His dedication to President and Country was admirable. But it was his unrequited love for Violet that stole our hearts and left us misty-eyed. Their love in 1954, rediscovered in 2000, proved that passion never dies and even elementary errors can be forgiven.

Simon Lee saved the day. He saved the episode. I am not sure, however, that his efforts will save the series. The series may have suffered irreparable harm, not from Simon, but from a journalist breaking a police cordon. Here is my take on The Event, Episode 1.06.

Ex Uni Plures: The Scandium Scandal

I am Spartacus!

I enjoyed seeing Simon deploy a clever solution to the problem of a radioactive tracer embedded in his leader’s digestive system. The solution was not unique, but it’s...

Scott Patterson on The Event and The Possibility of a Gilmore Girls Movie
When Gilmore Girls went off the air in 2007, Scott Patterson hung up the iconic flannel shirt and backwards baseball cap that defined his character Luke Danes and tried out a few other television roles that didn't stick: The father of a teenager on Aliens in America, a sheriff in a Lifetime movie and an ex-convict on the new 90210. Things have changed though for the Philadelphia-born actor with his juicy network job on NBC's The Event. As Michael Buchanan, a pilot dragged into a government conspiracy after his daughter goes missing, Patterson has not only found a role that lets him explore his full range of emotion on-screen for the first time, but also a stable home, as yesterday's full-season pick-up can attest.

Nothing New Under the Sun: A Look at The Event 1.05 by Pearson Moore
“I need you to gather the able-bodied.”

Thomas and Sophia reprised the Inostranka Conference, as they had in Episode 1.03 and in Episode 1.02 before that. The Avias passengers suffered nosebleeds, as they had in Episode 1.04. Michael Buchanan demanded to know what was going on, as he had the episode before. Thomas, as usual, was on his mobile phone. He was disobeying Sophia, as usual.

There’s nothing new under the sun, and there was very little new on Inostranka. Sean and Leila reunited after an unlikely decision by Vicky, Blake Sterling presented his final solution to the Inostranka problem, President Martinez showed a dark side to his character, and Sophia revealed a humane outlook.

Last night’s episode was weak. Perhaps some episodes must serve to “put the pieces in place”. This is a nearly axiomatic truth in serial fiction, but even so, we cannot be faulted for some expectation of novel technique,...

The Event Season 1, Episode 4 Recap: A Matter of Life and Death
Originally thought to be dead, the survivors of the Avias 514 woke up at the end of last week, a terrific cliffhanger that kept The Event questions stirring all week. They are questioned one-by-one, but it seems that the only thing they remember is getting on the plane in Miami and then waking up in the hangar lined up next to one another. None of them recall Sean trying to hijack the plane, crash landing in Yuma, nor who or what wiped their memories. The most important survivor is Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) who, much to the dismay of Vice President Jarvis (Bill Smitrovich), chief advisor Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek) is already questioning him. Sterling doesn’t find out much, except that Michael was forced to fly the plane after his wife was killed and his daughters were taken away. We also get an icy chill between Sterling and VP Jarvis.

'The Event': Leila gets away ... or does she? (Dun-dun-dun!)
After three episodes of heavy forward movement, Monday's (Oct. 11) installment "The Event" slowed down a little to set up the next bit of business. Which leaves us more time to notice things like the incredibly convoluted baiting of a trap for Sean.

Vicky and Carter's endgame in this episode was to have Leila contact Sean. But rather than, say just leaving a phone down in the basement for Leila to find, they instead:

- Purposely left a shard of broken beer bottle in the basement so Leila could saw through the rope binding her hands. Good thing she didn't use it as a weapon when she attacked Vicky.

- Loaded their guns with blanks so that when Leila wrestled the gun away from Vicky and shot her, Vicky wouldn't get hurt.

- Killed a couple of cops so their guys could pick Leila up and take her to the station,...

A House Divided: Cultural Loyalties in The Event 1.02 by Pearson Moore
"Their patience is running out."

Sophia's statement was not made from a position of stable authority. Such a statement is an admission of instability, disequilibrium, looming chaos. She might as well have said, "I cannot control my people's actions"; the meaning would have been approximately the same. President Martinez should have known her words were a statement of weakness and not "a threat". Sophia rules a house divided.

In fact, the 97 and the dozens among us are split into no less than three factions. If only the president understood this. He could exploit the knowledge to improve his position. But by next week the President of the United States will understand only one thing: two hundred innocent civilians were murdered by a foreign entity possessing super-human intelligence and superior weaponry. He will not understand this as a threat. President Martinez will understand this as a declaration of war.

The Event Season 1 Episode 2 Review: To Keep Us Safe
Lots of questions were answered on Monday’s episode of The Event. The pilot left viewers wondering what happened to the plane as it vanished into thin air. It was headed on a suicide mission towards President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood) and was being piloted by Michael Buchanan (Scott Patterson) who had locked himself in the cockpit, while his future son-in-law, Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) was trying to stop him. The plane reappears in a desert near Yuma, Arizona and all of the passengers safely exit, including Michael who stumbles to the ground and tells Sean to find Leila (Sarah Roemer) before she is killed. Several helicopters arrive on the horizon, already expecting where the crash site would be. Leila and her younger sister are being held at gunpoint, which forced Michael’s hand to hijack the plane in the first place. Leila and Sean’s snorkeling buddy, Vicky (Taylor Cole...

The Event Review: "To Keep Us Safe"
My feelings for The Event did not change from its opening episode through its follow-up: I really like this new drama.

It was nice that the writers showed us within the first 45 seconds where the plane disappeared to in "To Keep Us Safe," and within the hour we found out that the prisoners at Mount Inostranka Detention Facility are not human, but instead are aliens.

Oh, how I love me some good ol' alien TV shows! I've always been a huge fan of 4400, along with the the current remake of the miniseries V, so The Event is right up my alley!

What makes this show different is the fact that half of the aliens that landed here have been trapped in the detention facility for over sixty years. Sophia stated to the President that her people can't wait any longer. They have been patient enough and want out. What do you think this could entail?...

Scott Patterson Obsessed With Frogs
Actor Scott Patterson has a secret obsession for petrified frogs. The "Saw IV", "Saw V" and "Saw VI" star has a collection of fossilized baby frogs. He says, "It's not something I ever really discuss in detail. They are prehistoric. There's a group of underground collectors around the world of which I am one."

"We're a fairly eclectic group and we get our hands on some pretty rare stuff. I'm now in the process of acquiring something of which there is only one in the world, so I'm pretty excited about that." And Patterson's odd collection isn't something that never leaves his home. He tells WENN, "It was on display at The Louvre in Paris."

On the small screen, Scott Patterson is currently starring as Michael Buchanan in the NBC drama series "The Event".

'The Event': Some answers, and some more questions
The second episode of "The Event" did not shy away from moving the plot forward, and it also eased off on the frenetic jumping around in time that occurred in the premiere. There were flashbacks, yes, but they weren't as numerous and served the present-day story -- where most of the episode took place -- pretty well.

After seeing episode two Monday (Sept. 27), we're a little more confident that the show has a handle on what it's doing. But even as it answered some of the questions from the premiere, it raised some others. But that's just how shows like this work -- if we knew everything now, then there wouldn't be much reason to tune in next week.

So let's look at some of the answers, and the new questions those answers raised.

Question: Where'd the plane go?

Answer: Into a massive electromagnetic field (per the military guys briefing...

The Event Will Not Be Like Lost – Will Begin Answering Questions Tonight
After a moderately intriguing series premiere last week, NBC’s new sci-fi thriller drama, The Event, will begin answering questions about the mysteries of the show sooner rather than later. Show creator and co-executive producer, Nick Wauters (Eureka, The 4400) promised viewers that answers “will start coming soon,” saying:

“One of the goals we set for ourselves (is) whatever mysteries we set up, to try to solve them pretty quickly so that the audience can join the party any time.”

In fact, answers will begin to emerge in tonight’s episode where the mystery of who the ninety-seven detainees are and what their “purpose” is. Wauters stated that what “the Event” is will be revealed “early on in the life of the show”. If networks learned anything from last season’s canceled show, FlashForward, it’s that fans’ attention spans are not as sustainable as it used to be. Will...

The Stranger: A Cultural View of Mount Inostranka by Pearson Moore (The Event)
The Stranger:

A Cultural View of Mount Inostranka

Analysis of The Event, Episode 1.01

by Pearson Moore

She doesn't know everything.

This was the primary revelation tonight. The disappearance of Vice President Jarvis and CIA Director Sterling an hour before the assassination attempt carried little importance in comparison. The disappearance of Flight 514 into an unearthly blue glow was as nothing.

"They saved us," she said, looking into the sky, surprised. Sophia. Wisdom. Holy Wisdom. Святая София. She is the wisdom of President Martinez and the wisdom of the ninety-seven on Mount Inostranka. "I haven't told you everything," she told the President. Those last five words were not the contrite admission of a woman caught in deception. They were words intended to obscure the fact of her surprise, her lack of control, her ignorance.

She doesn't know everything.

It was the greatest revelation, the stuff from which great stories are drawn. This story has depth,...

The Event Series Premiere Review: What is Going On?!?
We finally got to watch one of the most hyped up and anticipated shows for the fall season and one thing's for certain: I Loved it!

Before I get to my review of The Event, let's go over some of the main characters we were introduced to in the pilot episode:

Sean Walker: Quite possibly the antihero of the show. His girlfriend, Leila, disappears while aboard a cruise before he can even pop the question. We learn that he is being targeted for the terrorist threat against the President, but in reality, he is just an average Joe wanting to find his true love. Michael Buchanan: Leila's father, who is somehow connected to the disappearance of his daughter. We also find out that he is the one that hijacked the plane that Sean is on.

Elias Martinez: President of the United States that learns about the top secret...

What is The Event? That is the question plaguing everyone as NBC gears up for its newest genre series for the upcoming Fall 2010 TV season. At this year’s Comic-Con, NBC showed a premature version of the pilot to many fans, making it the most well-received TV screening there. So is this series with its namesake an “event” to get into on Monday nights each week?

Well, certainly the show is a a very capable romp in conspiracy, intrigue and science -fiction. It’s sort of a genre fans dream to combine elements of 24, Lost, Fringe and X-Files into a convincing show that is as interesting as it is ambitious. The pilot episode works like many ensemble series today by introducing a plethora of characters, while working different narratives in an out of order sequence to try and conceive that feeling of mystery.

It’s hard to try and describe...

'The Event' review: The new 'Lost'? Or the new 'FlashForward'?
"Lost" and "24" left some pretty big serial mystery show shoes to fill after their departures last season. Can "The Event" fill in? Maybe.

It's hard to tell after only one episode. Certainly the show raises several interesting questions, but will it mete out enough answers to keep viewers tuning in? And can it sustain the mystery all season? We're dubious, but we're already engaged enough that we'll give the show a chance

We don't want to give too much away, but basically "The Event" is about, well, an event. The first episode doesn't get into the details, so right away there's one mystery to get viewers to return. What the first episode does reveal is a prison camp (think Gitmo North) where Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes) and 96 others are being held.

Until President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood) decides to close the camp, release the prisoners and apparently introduce them to the world.

The Event Series Premiere Review
When a network touts a series calling itself The Event and launches a marketing campaign intent on capitalizing on the fact that nobody knows what the series and the event lying therein is about, it better deliver in 45 minutes or less. While there’s enough mystery and intrigue amongst a non-linear and somewhat confusing storyline, people looking for an immediately satisfying and equally compelling replacement for the recently retired Lost may not be so pleased. Hit the jump to find out why The Event has potential, but may not be the event for which viewers have been waiting.

While Lost had a two part pilot to draw in viewers, The Event is stuck with only 45 minutes to convince viewers that this mystery is worth following (for who knows how long). However, the reason for the lack of a long pilot becomes clear with a lack of substantial characters and content...

Exclusive Interview: Scott Patterson - NBC's 'The Event'
During Comic-Con last week, we spoke with actor Scott Patterson (Gilmore Girls, Saw IV, Saw V), who was in San Diego to promote NBC's The Event. Patterson plays Michael Buchanan, who is part of the assassination conspiracy and also the father of Sean Walker's (Jason Ritter) missing fiancee, Leila (Sarah Roemer). We were a bit pressed for time, so our conversation was brief, but he gives us what he can on his character and how he's tied into the overall show. Of course, he dishes no spoilers, but does say that Episode 2 will reveal a lot.  Besides that, he mentions that The Event is the best project he's been privileged to work on. [jambovideo id="230597" wide="yes" /] You can catch The Event on NBC when it debuts on September 20th.
