Chile’s Leonardo Medel directs the drama starring Mariana Di Girolamo.

Berlin-based Films Boutique has picked up world sales rights to La Veronica, a new social media-themed drama directed by Chile’s Leonardo Medel, which is being introduced to buyers during the virtual Cannes market.

The film, produced by Santiago-based outfit Merced, is in post-production and led by rising Latin American star Mariana Di Girolamo, last seen in Pablo Larraín’s Venice competition title Ema.

Girolamo plays the wife of a famous football player who spends her days by the pool, at photo shoots and taking care of her Instagram account.

The brilliant Yolande Moreau, Gustave Kervern and François Morel topline this Loin derrière l'Oural production, which will be sold by Films Boutique. Les Sans-dents (lit. “The Toothless”), the fourth feature by Pascal Rabaté, following Wandering Streams (2010), Holidays by the Sea (Best Director Award at Karlovy Vary in 2011) and Patchwork Family (also in competition at Karlovy Vary in 2014), is currently in post-production. Seven world premieres and five international premieres include an animated movie for the first time in competition; Us drama Low Down starring John Hawkes and Elle Fanning; and Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson’s follow-up to Either Way.

The 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (July 4-12) has revealed the line-ups for its Official Selection Competition, East of the West Competition, Documentary Films Competition and Forum of Independents Competition.

Kv artistic director Karel Och said: “This year’s selection of competing films offers an exciting mixture of outstanding films whose completion has been eagerly anticipated.

“Many of the filmmakers, who explore less frequently trodden paths of cinematic expression, come from the countries of the former Eastern Bloc, which the Kviff has long focused on.”

In the main festival section, renowned Georgian filmmaker George Ovashvili (The Other Bank) will introduce his long-anticipated film Corn Island, a psychological drama that uses captivating imagery and visuals to present a highly topical subject...

Exclusive: German sales company Films Boutique has snapped up world rights to several new titles.

Here at the Cannes market, the company is unveiling Monument To Michael Jackson, which will have a closed screening for buyers.

Directed by Darko Lungulov, the bittersweet comedy is set in a dying town in Serbia, where daydreamer Marko is on the verge of divorce from the love of his life.

When an old communist-era monument is removed front he Main Square, he comes up with the idea to build a monument to Michael Jackson in order to save his town and seduce his wife again. But the town’s mayor has his own plans.

During the festival, Films Boutique will also be introducing buyers to Directors’ Fornight title Next To Her, the debut feature by Asaf Korman who worked as editor on The Slut by Hagar Ben Asher. The film stars Dana Ivgy and Liron Ben-Shlush.

Exclusive: Comedies dominate Films Boutique’s line-up of market premieres at next week’s Marché du Film in Cannes.

The Berlin-based sales outfit will be presenting three comedies among its latest pickups.

These include Serbian writer-director Darko Lungulov’s Monument To Michael Jackson. It follows his award-winning feature Here And There and was pitched at various co-production events, including Sofia Meetings and Moscow Business Square; the film was co-produced by Macedonia’s Producer on the Move, Ognen Antov of Dream Factory Macedonia;T

The other two titles are Belgian film-maker Geoffrey Enthoven’s Halfway and Pascal Rabaté’s Patchwork Family, to be released in France on July 9 by Ad Vitam Distribution, as buyers-only screenings.

Halfway is the second film by Enthoven to be handled internationally by Films Boutique after the sales company had sold Come As You Are, a drama about three disabled youngsters going to Spain to get laid, to 42 territories...

The German sales company based out of Berlin nabbed a pair of spots in this year’s Critics’ Week for David Lambert’s Hors Les Murs and one of our most anticipated films of the fest, Sofia’s Last Ambulance – the documentary first film from Ilian Metev. They don’t have anything listed for their future slate, but they’ve managed to rep Sundance/Berlin items in Keep the Lights On and Four Suns.

Funny Balloons - the French sales company (founded in 03) has created a small niche of repertoire films, and are the folks behind some of my breakout favorites such as Chile's Tony Manero and Mexico's Lake Tahoe (both Cannes products). This year they'll be presenting Benda Bilili! in the Director's Fortnight (opening night slot) and they've got a promo reel for Pablo Larrain's Post Mortem (see pic above) - which I would now say is lining up for Venice preem.
