Punning title aside, Salvador Litvak’s film promises a serious look at antisemitic violence, inspired by the 2019 shooting (which killed one person and injured three more) at Chabad of Poway Synagogue in San Diego County. Alas, the convoluted screenplay written by the director and spouse Nina Litvak bears little resemblance to that real-world incident, locates the criminal motivation well outside the realm of antisemitism, and somewhat awkwardly attempts to balance straight suspense with a persistent comedic streak.

Yellow Veil Pictures has bought North America rights for Addison Heimann’s offbeat horror “Touch Me,” following its festival run at Sundance Midnight and SXSW.

“Touch Me” follows “two co-dependent best friends become addicted to the heroin-like touch of an alien narcissist who may or may not be trying to take over the world.” Olivia Taylor Dudley stars alongside Lou Taylor Pucci (“Evil Dead”) and Jordan Gavaris (“The Lake”) from a script from Heimann. It’s produced by Heimann, John Humber and David Lawson Jr and executive produced by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead for Rustic Films.

The scattershot new media satire “Vengeance” might have been merely a toothless provocation replete with both-sides false equivalences were it not so well-scripted and well-directed on a scene-to-scene basis.

This post-truth black comedy, about a wannabe podcaster who investigates the death of a fair-weather romantic partner, benefits from writer-director B.J. Novak’s experience and command of sitcom-style humor. Novak also plays Ben, the smarmy, if basically sympathetic lead, but he fares much better behind the camera.

There’s consequently a genuine playfulness and appreciable back-and-forth rhythm in even the most obnoxious and played-out comedic routines, like an introductory scene where presumptuous New Yorker magazine writer Ben commiserates with John (John Mayer) about hooking up with random women. They frequently complement each other’s shallow talking points with “100,” which gives a little snap to an otherwise unpleasant...

Each year, the Fantasia International Film Festival is full of stories about supernatural horrors and fantasy worlds, but sometimes the most horrific experiences occur in real life, especially when people become overwhelmed and find it difficult to tell reality and fantasy apart. Addison Heimann’s directorial début puts its cards on the table at the outset with the legend ‘based on a real breakdown’. The film utilises several key elements from Heimann’s own life, but its narrative is slightly different and its characters fictional, so there’s no reduction in tension as a result.

The film opens when its hero, Will (played for most of its duration by Zach Villa) is just a boy. His mother (Marlene Forte) spirits him away to a motel one night, distraught about the idea that people are tracking them, and at first it seems as if they might be in real danger, perhaps from an abusive.

“Hypochondriac” informs viewers right away that it is “based on a real breakdown,” which certainly provides a new wrinkle on the now-wildly-overused “true story” proviso. Nonetheless, clarity of hindsight is not a major virtue in this adventurous first feature by writer-director Addison Heimann.

The offbeat indie drama features Zach Villa as a Los Angelean whose troubled past threatens to unravel his domestic partnership and his very sanity. The combination of gay protagonists, mental illness exploration, horror tropes, and surreal elements that gesture toward “Donnie Darko” make for an ambitious mix that holds attention, even if the uneven, somewhat muddled results are ultimately more effortful than insightful.

Following a festival tour that includes a midnight berth at SXSW and fitting slot in genre-focused Fantasia, XYZ Films will open the film in limited release on July 29, with digital and VOD release following Aug. 4.

The rom-com follows movie star London Clash (Baker) after the love of his life Apple (Becky G) breaks up with him via text. The timing couldn’t be worse as London has the most important meeting of his career on the same day. Compounded by chaotic roommates and wildly unpredictable twists and turns, London’s day keeps going downhill until, ultimately, he is forced to choose between pursuing his one true love and landing a life-changing, starring role in a major motion picture.

Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun have a new collaboration in the works, and it's not a musical one. On April 14, the pop-punk musicians announced their new movie, "Good Mourning," a stoner comedy stacked with a star-studded cast. The film will be Mod Sun and Mgk's feature-length screenwriting and directorial debuts and will star both musicians as roommates in a chaotic living situation. For the project, Mgk will be billed under his legal name, Colson Baker. "Bold in their approach, [Colson and Mod] have assembled a troupe of top-tier talent to join them on this hilarious ride. A debut like Addison Heimann's "Hypochondriac" turns heads, the same way Richard Bates Jr. once did with "Excision" — an intentional comparison because "Hypochondriac" channels the energy of Bates Jr. doing a "Donnie Darko" riff about mental health. It's impassioned, embraces LGBTQ+ authenticity, and feels fresh despite nearly cloning Donnie's pal Frank except with a wolf costume instead of a bunny. There is nothing funny about having a nervous breakdown, so it’s extremely admirable when someone can not only share their story with the world, but also manage to insert humor into a difficult situation. Writer/director Addison Heimann’s feature film debut, Hypochondriac, is an intimate, and sometimes hysterical, glimpse into his own personal experience with mental illness and the film is premiering at this year’s SXSW Film Festival.

Hypochondriac follows a young, gay man named Will, played by Zach Villa (American Horror Story), who gives a wonderfully authentic performance. When Will was a child, his mother (Marlene Forte) began acting strangely and after becoming violent, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Will then cut off all communication with his mother, partially on the advice of a therapist, played by Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds), and eighteen years later, he has a boyfriend and a job as a potter for an exclusive gallery.

Exclusive: XYZ Films has acquired North American rights to the LGBTQ horror-thriller Hypochondriac, starring Zach Villa (American Horror Story), Devon Graye (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore), Madeline Zima (Californication), Chris Doubek (Boyhood), Marlene Forte (Knives Out) and Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds), ahead of its world premiere in the Midnighters section of the 2022 SXSW Film Festival on March 14. Exclusive: Zach Villa, Devon Graye, Madeline Zima, Chris Doubek, Marlene Forte, Paget Brewster, Adam Busch, Michael Cassidy, Peter Mensah and Debra Wilson have signed on to star in Addison Heimann’s feature directorial debut, Hypochondriac.

In the LGBTQ-themed horror-thriller, a young potter’s life devolves into chaos as he loses function of his body while being haunted by the physical manifestation of his childhood trauma.

Bay Dariz is producing through his Minutehand Pictures banner alongside John Humber, with Michelle Lewitt handling casting.

Exclusive: Colson Baker (aka Machine Gun Kelly) and Mod Sun are set to co-direct Good Mourning With A U for Chris Long and David Ayer’s Cedar Park Studios. This will be their theatrical directorial debut. The film was also co-written by Baker and Mod Sun.

The cast includes Baker, Megan Fox, Dove Cameron, Whitney Cummings, GaTa, Becky G, Zach Villa, Mod Sun, Jenna Boyd and Boo Johnson, with a special appearance by Pete Davidson.

“We’re just happy to be bringing our vision to life,” said Mod Sun and Colson. “We’re humbled by the trust we have from our cast members and crew.”

Open Road Films, recently re-launched by Raven Capital and Tom Ortenberg, has taken U.S. rights and will release the film theatrically. Producers are Jib Polhemus, Long and Ayer. Executive producers are Raven Capital Management’s James Masciello and Matthew Sidari.

Principal photography is under way in Los Angeles.

Dubbed creepy nicknames such as "Hotel Death" and "The Suicide," the Cecil Hotel harbors a dark history as a hotbed for death, suicide, and murder. A magnet for crime, it was formerly home to serial killers such as Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger. In 2013, its notoriety hit off once more when 21-year-old Canadian traveler Elisa Lam was found dead in the hotel's water tank days after police released a chilling video of her in an elevator.

Lam's story is now the focus of Netflix's Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, which interviews experts and hotel workers to clarify the context around her case. But this docuseries isn't the first time we've seen the Cecil or Lam's story referenced on the small screen. Back in 2015, the Cecil actually inspired Ryan Murphy to create American Horror Story: Hotel, which focuses on the disturbing events at the fictional Hotel Cortez.

The 2020 Emmy ballots have been released by the Television Academy, so we now know which shows, actors, etc. are in contention for this year’s golden statues. FX’s “American Horror Story: 1984” accounts for a whopping 29 entries across all competitive ballots, including 10 actors for their roles as counselors/workers at the hauntingly tubular Camp Redwood. This ninth season of the popular anthology series welcomed back fan favorites like John Carroll Lynch (as Mr. Jingles) and Emma Roberts (as Brooke Thompson) while also introducing some new blood in the form of Angelica Ross (as Nurse Rita) and Gus Kenworthy (as Chet Clancy).

This installment, which aired last September-November, is also notable for producing the show’s landmark 100th episode, which flash-forwarded a year after the massacre at Camp Redwood. Will “Ahs: 1984” continue the franchise’s winning streak at the 2020 Emmys? The first eight cycles took home 16 trophies, including acting wins...

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups). Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Three years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.

While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series recently, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But there has been an uptick as of late, with 33 such shows submitted in 2018, 35 last year and 41 for this awards cycle. Even so, with five nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below is pretty good.

It’s finally, mercifully, time for me to move on from “Ahs: 1984.” The season ended this week, after a season that somehow managed to establish a new standard for being all over the place for a series that is best known at this point for being all over the place. That’s quite an accomplishment, but not really a good one.

Before I can forget all of this ever happened, I have a laundry list of things that happened in “Ahs: 1984” that were super irritating and frustrating to watch, and I feel like I’m gonna go crazy if I don’t try to share this madness with our dear readers.
