Maggie Betts Made the Kind of Sundance Hit We May Never See Again — Making Her Follow-Up Was Much Harder
Image
When filmmaker Maggie Betts premiered her feature debut, the stunning period piece “Novitiate,” at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, the drama starring Margaret Qualley as a young nun took a path many other films had already followed. It showed to strong reviews (including from this writer), earned Betts a Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Director, was bought at the festival by Sony Pictures Classics for an estimated 7-digit price, got a theatrical release in the heat of the fall season, and even picked up some awards buzz for co-star Melissa Leo.

These days, that once-traditional route is a vestige of the past, as the theatrical landscape continues to shift and festival buys grow slimmer. But while Betts readily admits she’s had to change her ambitions to suit the ecosystem, that hasn’t diminished her work. It has, however, altered it a bit. For one thing, it took her six years...

American Horror Story Fans Hoped That AHS: NYC Would Connect to a Previous Season in Week 3 — But Did It?
Image
FX promised a “season like no other” with American Horror Story: NYC, and it certainly has been. But does that also mean it won’t be connected to any of the previous 10 AHS installments?

Longtime fans certainly hope that isn’t the case, so when the silhouette of a winged woman appeared in the preview for Week 3 (Episodes 5 and 6), they allowed themselves to get excited. After all, who else could it be if not Frances Conroy as Shachath (aka the Angel of Death), last seen way back in American Horror Story: Asylum?

“American Horror Stories” Review – ‘Facelift’ Performs a Makeover So Wacky That It Works
Image
‘American Horror Stories’ targets the plastic surgery industry with a wild episode that hinges upon its transformative finish.

“What’s your secret?”

The world is a superficial place and it’s hard to not get caught up in physical appearances. It’s no surprise that a wealth of horror films and social satires focus on plastic surgery, the cosmetics industry, and the pursuit of “perfection.” Crimes of the Future, The Neon Demon, or a myriad of Tales From the Crypt episodes like “Beauty Rest,” “Only Skin Deep,” or “Judy, You’re Not Yourself Today” all attack the subject matter from uniquely creepy perspectives. In fact, “Facelift” is one of the episodes of American Horror Stories that most closely resembles a Tales From the Crypt installment, which is high praise for a series that occasionally feels like it’s phoning it in.

In “Facelift,” American Horror Stories has a lot of...

4 reasons why Ewan McGregor (‘Halston’) will beat the odds and win Emmy for Netflix
Image
As of this writing, Gold Derby’s 31 Experts can’t decide who will win Best Movie/Limited Actor at the 2021 Emmys. A leading 17 of these pundits predict Paul Bettany (“WandaVision”) will prevail on Sunday night, with 13 more picking Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and one going out on a limb for Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”). But I think they’re all wrong. Ewan McGregor (“Halston”) is my pick to win for playing famed American fashion designer Halston in Ryan Murphy‘s Netflix limited series. Even though the Scottish actor is a bit of an underdog at the Emmys, don’t count him out just yet. Read on to see my four reasons why I think McGregor will beat the odds.

‘Halston’ Emmy interviews: Watch our 7 in-depth chats with Krysta Rodriguez, Rebecca Dayan and more

The limited series “Halston” premiered on May 14 of this year, but the period drama about the fashion icon of the same name was more than two decades in the making. Series director Daniel Minahan first read a biography of the famed designer in 1996 and felt that it needed a film treatment. After multiple failed attempts to bring the project to fruition, he teamed with Killer Films co-founder Christine Vachon and superstar producer Ryan Murphy and the series found a home on Netflix.

“Halston” stars Ewan McGregor in the title role. The Iowa- born Halston first came to prominence designing high-end hats for women. After one of his hats is worn by Jackie Kennedy, Halston becomes a giant in the fashion industry, creating everything from designer gowns, to luggage and even perfume. The series is set against the backdrop of the New York party scene of the 1970s, replete with cocaine-fueled...

Designing ‘Halston’: Ewan McGregor and Jeriana San Juan in conversation
Image
It took some 20 years for Dan Minahan to bring the influential but ultimately tragic life of fashion designer Roy Halston to the small screen. The executive producer/director of Netflix’s five-part series “Halston,” Minahan initially thought he would do a feature film version of the designer who came to fame in 1961 designing the pillbox Jackie Kennedy wore for the inauguration and then transformed fashion and Bff Liza Minnelli when he created the evocative, colorful costumes for her 1972 special “Liza With A Z.” But he developed a cocaine habit and spent his nights at Studio 54; his world collapsed in the 1980s.

During a Deadline Zoom conversation, Minahan soon realized Halston’s story didn’t fit into a 90-minute script. “I think the world had to kind of catch up on this story,” he noted. “When we decided that would make it a five-hour limited series, it gave us the time...

How Krysta Rodriguez Learned to ‘Pump Up the Liza’ for ‘Halston’
Krysta Rodriguez
This story about Krysta Rodriguez and “Halston” first appeared in the Limited Series & TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

The role of the best friend can be a thankless and colorless one, but not if the best friend is Liza Minnelli. That’s the part that theater and TV actress Krysta Rodriguez plays in the Netflix limited series “Halston,” which stars Ewan McGregor as the iconic fashion designer and features Rodriguez as the diva who became his lifelong friend and confidante through success, drug addiction and rehab, up to his death in 1990 from AIDS-related cancer.

Playing Liza from her days in small nightclubs through her Oscar-winning performance in “Cabaret” and her party-girl phase during the heyday of New York’s Studio 54 disco, Rodriguez nails all the Liza mannerisms — the flutter, the laugh, the open-palmed gestures — but also has the musical-theater chops to handle material like “Say Liza,” the...

In our exclusive video interview with Dayan (watch above), Dayan discusses the importance of getting Peretti’s story right and the significance of playing such a strong and independent woman.

The role required Dayan to learn to speak with an Italian accent, something that didn’t come easily for the French-born actress. Dayan describes how she worked with friends who are native to Italy, sometimes recording conversations with them to help her master the accent. She also relied on more conventional methods,...

Ewan McGregor and Gian Franco Rodriguez in Halston (2021)
‘Halston': Did A Woman Really Die in the Studio 54 Vents?
Ewan McGregor and Gian Franco Rodriguez in Halston (2021)
(Some light spoilers ahead for the fourth episode of the Netflix series “Halston”)

The life of Roy Halston Frowick, better known simply as Halston, was not boring. That simply is not a word you could accurately throw around about anybody who was super rich and frequented Studio 54 during its brief reign of glory in New York in the late 1970s.

As we see in numerous scenes on “Halston” — as well, of course, from the many, many stories that folks have shared about it over the past four decades — that place was crazy. An absolute madhouse of debauchery. And certainly too chaotic to last.

Halston himself (Ewan McGregor) was a well known Studio 54 attendee in real life, partying there as often as he could, and the show reflects that — he, Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez), Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez), Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan) and Joe Eula (David Pittu) go there all the time,...

Halston: Glamorous Photos of the Real - and Really Iconic - Elsa Peretti
In the early days of his career, fashion designer Halston developed a close relationship with another one of the greats: Elsa Peretti, the iconic Italian jewelry designer. In Ryan Murphy's Halston, Rebecca Dayan portrays the legendary jeweler, who first came up in the fashion world as one of Halston's models and best friends in the Studio 54 disco scene. Peretti collaborated with Halston extensively, helping him design his first iconic perfume bottle and creating trinkets for him. Eventually, Tiffany & Co. discovered her work and gave her the position of an in-house designer - not too long later, her rapport with Halston unfortunately broke down, as we see on the miniseries.

Peretti recently passed away on March 18, but her legacy in jewelry design will always be remembered. Do Dayan's style and appearance on Halston match the real-life designer's? Scroll ahead for photos of Peretti and see for yourself.

First Look: How the ‘Halston’ Costume Designer Built Iconic Tie-Dye Collection
Image
Fashion designer Halston’s tie-dye collection first dropped in the late 1960s. Silk chiffon was draped over the body and revolutionized fashion as stylish New Yorkers and celebrities such as Anjelica Huston donned the iconic couturier’s caftans.

That collection is one of the looks that’s faithfully re-created by costume designer Jeriana San Juan in the Netflix miniseries written by Ryan Murphy and starring Ewan McGregor in the title role.

“Halston,” which debuts May 14, traces the life of Roy Halston Frowick, the Bergdorf Goodman milliner who got his start as a Chicago hatmaker and shot to fame in the ’60s, becoming mononymic after designing First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s pillbox hat for her husband’s presidential inauguration in 1961.

Over the series’ five episodes, San Juan’s wardrobes focus on several eras as events follow Halston from the late 1950s to the 1990s. Settings include a re-creation of the 1973 “Battle...

Halston Family Calls Netflix’s Upcoming Series ‘Inaccurate’ and ‘Fictionalized’
Image
The family of late fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, professionally known as Halston, has issued a statement against Netflix’s upcoming series based on his life, calling it “inaccurate” and “fictionalized.”

“The Halston Archives and Family were not consulted on the upcoming Netflix series involving an inaccurate, fictionalized account of famed fashion designer, ‘Halston,'” the family said in a statement to the Associated Press. “The Halston Archives remains the only definitive and comprehensive source on the man and his legacy as the personally appointed custodian of his private papers and effects.”

Lesley Frowick, director of the Halston Archives and Halston’s niece, told Variety that the family was “never contacted” about the series, and were “collectively disappointed” by its production.

“I would like to let you know that in no way was the Halston family ever contacted about this production,” Frowick wrote in a statement to Variety. “Halston’s...

Ryan Murphy at an event for Eat Pray Love (2010)
“Halston for your today. Halston for your every day. Halston for your world”

Netflix dropped the trailer for Ryan Murphy’s limited series “Halston” starring Ewan McGregor in the title role of the iconic fashion designer. And seeing as the five-episode show is about how Halston became Halston, it’s only appropriate that this sneak peek begin with McGregor uttering these lines: “I have a vision. I’m going to change the face of American fashion.”

Set to Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence,” the rest of the 2-minute, 27-second trailer introduces us to Murphy’s take on Halston through his bold choices in both his career and his personal life.

7 New Netflix Shows in May 2021 and the Best Reasons to Watch
Image
1. “Master of None” Season 3

Why Should I Watch? By the time Season 3 premieres, it will have been more than four years since “Master of None” last dropped new episodes. Obviously, a lot has changed — as has the new season, which moves Lena Waithe’s supporting character from Seasons 1 and 2 into the spotlight. Season 3, subtitled “Moments in Love,” follows Denise and her partner Alicia (played by Naomi Ackie) as they work through long-term relationship highs and lows, including fertility challenges and divergent personal growth.

Co-creator and executive producer Aziz Ansari will still appear in the series, but his main duties have shifted to writing and directing; he helms all five episodes and co-writes the scripts, as well. Can Season 3 capture the old spark that saw “Master of None” honored with three Emmy Awards and 12 nominations?

Bonus Reason: Ansari’s investment in romance is far from a fleeting endeavor. The former “Parks and Recreation...

Tesla Review — Tesla (2020) Film Review, a movie directed by Michael Almereyda and starring Ethan Hawke, Eve Hewson, Josh Hamilton, Lucy Walters, Kyle MacLachlan, Jim Gaffigan, Donnie Keshawarz, Rebecca Dayan and Jameal Ali. “Tesla” Sees Ethan Hawke Play The Groundbreaking Inventor
Ethan Hawke at an event for One Last Thing... (2005)
Ethan Hawke is an actor capable of doing just about anything. We’ve seen him tackle, over the years, nearly all genres and all sizes of production, winning acclaim consistently. Here, with Tesla, he’s apparently going the prestige biopic route, though looks can be deceiving. While the appearance here is of an independent take on what would usually be considered Oscar bait, instead we have a rather off-beat and even daring at times remix of a biographical tale. There are missteps from time to time, but the willingness to buck convention, as well as Hawke’s committed work, make it something to seek out. The film is, on the surface at least, a biopic of Nikola Tesla (Hawke), the inventor whose eventual breakthroughs in transmitting electrical power and light would change the world. However, he’s long been portrayed as a pawn in a battle for power (no pun...

Contemporary Color: Michael Almereyda on "Tesla"
Image
“When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in the eternity before and after, the little space which I fill, and even can see, engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces of which I am ignorant, and which know me not, I am frightened, and am astonished at being here rather than there; for there is no reason why here rather than there, why now rather than then. Who has put me here? By whose order and direction have this place and time been allotted to me?” —Blaise Pascal, PenséesA master without a masterwork: such, one might say, is the peculiar, paradoxical position of American filmmaker Michael Almereyda. Spanning over three decades, his career is vigorous, accomplished, and frequently inspired, intriguing not just for its eclectic breadth of focus, but also for its doggedly exploratory bent—ranging from sundry experiments with the Pixelvision camera, to a turn-of-the-millennium Hamlet adaptation,...

‘Tesla’ Review: A Postmodern Biopic for a Modern Genius
Image
If you want to be bored breathless by how Serbian inventor Nicola Tesla (1856-1943) figured into the feud between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse over direct and alternating currents, try 2019’s The Current War. It’s biopic trolling at its dullest. Or you may want to consider Tesla, which is both a corrective and a mesmerizing showcase for Ethan Hawke, playing the futurist who harnessed AC to light the eventual spark for our contemporary wireless world. Google searches, a Macbook and a cellphone make anachronistic cameos as Tesla mixes it...

Tesla Trailer: Ethan Hawke Is Legendary Scientist Nikola Tesla
Image
IFC Films has released a new trailer for Tesla. The biopic is set to chronicle the life of famed scientist Nikola Tesla, who is responsible for alternating-current, which paved the way for the modern age in many ways. Ethan Hawke is playing the iconic figure in the drama which, per the studio, "like it's subject, defies convention." As we can see from the trailer, that statement seems to be rather accurate.

The trailer kicks off by presenting Ethan Hawke as Nikola Tesla, "the greatest inventor of the age." We then get a feel for the unique way the biopic is being presented. Which is, to say the least, not a straightforward approach. The footage touches on the murky history surrounding the important figure, as well as his relationship to Thomas Edison, which is complicated and contentious. It paints Tesla as a visionary, but a complex one and the nature of...
