Besides this 4th movie, Despicable Me 3 and Minions have also occupied spots in the top five of the weekly top 10 global list. Despicable Me Kicks Shrek Off The Streaming Charts
Image
Despicable Me is already the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time based on its box office gross. Now, the series is also establishing its streaming dominance.

The franchise, which debuted in 2010, has since seen Gru's Minions branch out with their own films. With movies in the original series and two Minion-led spinoffs, the franchise has been a major hit, passing the four Shrek films and its two Puss in Boots spinoffs at the box office. Per Tudum, Despicable Me also beat Shrek on streaming, taking over the charts globally for the week between Feb. 17 and 23.

DreamWorks Animation announces the main voice cast for Shrek 5 and it includes Zendaya in a major role.

Just recently, the DreamWorks Adaptations Shrek franchise took over streaming with several installments ahead of the highly anticipated Shrek 5. The first three films stayed in the global charts for two weeks.

‘Despicable Me 4’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Steve Carrell, Joey King, Will Ferrell, Miranda Cosgrove | Written by Mike White, Ken Daurio | Directed by Chris Renaud, Patrick Delage

In the fourth instalment of the Despicable Me franchise, Gru (Steve Carrell) is officially a dad thanks to Gru Jr., who’s intent on tormenting him. However, peaceful family bliss soon comes grinding to a halt when criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) — and yet another archnemesis — escapes from prison and vows revenge against Gru.

It’s potentially the challenge of a lifetime to write a compelling, nay in any way descriptive, review of Despicable Me 4. If you are reading this and haven’t yet seen the movie, or even a single second of its latest trailer, you already know exactly what you’re about to read. The film is already one we’ve seen before, countless times over. This time, it’s that little bit worse. The light has faded,...

After the previous installment in the spinoff series pushed the franchise to a major financial milestone, Minions 3 is getting an earlier release date.

The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Universal is shifting some of its upcoming release calendar around. A $1 Billion Illumination Threequel Is Streaming for Free in January
Image
The third installment in Illumination's Despicable Me franchise will drop on Tubi in the New Year. Despicable Me 3 (2017), starring Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig, will stream for free starting Jan. 1, 2025.

In the threequel, which earned more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office, Gru, voiced by Carell, meets his long-lost twin brother, Dru (also voiced by Carell), who is pretty much the opposite of Gru with his charming and cheerful personality. Together, they decide to team up to take down the villain, Balthazar Bratt (voiced by South Park’s Trey Parker), a former child star from the 1980s seeking revenge on the world.

In its review of Despicable Me 3, Cbr said the movie had no shortage of plot, but it tends to leap from one topic to the next with a “hyperactive whimsy” so that even those who are easily distracted will not be bored with the film.

10 Best Illumination Movies, Ranked
Image
Though it was founded less than 20 years ago, Illumination has managed to produce some of the biggest animated films of the 21st century. From Despicable Me to Sing, these franchises have released a wealth of spin-off content and merchandise, exemplifying the lucrative nature of this production company. But the company's success doesn't stop there. Illumination is gearing up to release several elusive sequels in the next two years, all of which are expected to be box-office hits.

Alongside these box-office statistics, Illumination has managed to secure an army of avid fans. Though the company mostly aims its films toward children, adults can also appreciate its ability to captivate audiences. As such, it seems that Illumination is set to defeat its surrounding competition as it extends its growing catalog of colorful films.

'God, I Hope Not': Despicable Me Director on Making a Live-Action Minions Movie

Renaud went on to note that he had no knowledge of such a concept being taken seriously by either Illumination or Universal Pictures, saying, "I mean if there were conversations, I haven't been privy to them. Box Office: ‘Despicable Me 4’ Rules July 4th With $120M Opening, ‘MaXXXine’ Scares Up $7M-$8M
Image
Illumination and Universal’s Minions franchise isn’t getting any worse for the wear as Despicable Me 4 rules the Fourth of July box office with an estimated five-day opening of $120 million, including a three-day weekend haul of $72.4 million.

That’s in line with expectations and a strong start for the fourth outing in the main franchise, and the sixth in the Despicable Me/Minions series, which ranks as the top-grossing animated franchise of all time.

The first Despicable Me opened over the July 9-11 weekend in 2010 to $56 million. The series then shifted its release earlier and became a Fourth of July staple. 2013’s Despicable Me 2 likewise opened on July 3, a Wednesday, and posted a five-day debut of $143 million. That was followed by a $120 million five-day holiday start for the threequel in 2017.

Why Isnt Dru in Despicable Me 4?
Image
Quick Links What Is Despicable Me 4 About? Who Is Dru Gru? Why Isn't Dru in Despicable Me 4?

Released theatrically in the U.S. on July 3, 2024, Despicable Me 4 has received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike. While most agree the film doesn't push the boundaries of the animated film franchise forward, the divisive summer film offers plenty of nostalgic entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. However, those anticipating the return of Felonius Gru's hilarious twin brother, Dru Gru (both voiced by Steve Carell), are bound to face disappointment.

Before explaining Dru's conspicuous absence from Despicable Me 4, it's worth noting that the character is mentioned in passing at least once in the movie. Some of those who've seen the movie also claim Dru briefly shows up at the end in Gru's backyard, possibly teasing the next prequel, sequel, or spin-off. Regardless of his silent cameo length,...

Gru and his mischievous minions are hoping to fulfill their patriotic duty and once again set off major fireworks at the Fourth of July box office.

Illumination and Universal’s Despicable Me 4, which opened Wednesday in theaters across the U.S., posted an opening day gross of $27 million for an estimated five-day holiday debut of $120 million at the domestic box office, including $70 million for more for the three-day weekend, according to early returns. That’s in line with expectations and a strong start for the fourth outing in the main franchise, and the sixth in the Despicable Me/Minions series, which combined ranks as the top-grossing animated franchise of all time.

DM4 — earning a glowing A CinemaScore — will have no trouble wresting the box office crown from Pixar and Disney blockbuster Inside Out 2, which is now in its fourth weekend.

Despicable Me 4 – Review
Image
As we approach the big extended (four days) holiday weekend the big Summer movie season dashes past its halfway point with a new entry in a fourteen-year-old film franchise. No big surprise, but this one is hoping to “ride the wave” generated by a sequel that caused an unexpected near-seismic tsunami at the box office, only a few weeks ago. Oh, did I mention that both flicks are animated? Yes, Inside Out 2 exceeded all the financial forecasters to be the first billion-dollar movie of 2024. So, will “lightning strike” again, as this is the first installment of the series in seven years, not counting a couple of prequel spin-offs. Perhaps Gru and his gang, including lotsa’ manic Minions, can lure some families at the multiplex away from another visit in Riley’s noggin with Despicable Me 4.

The story does start with the “Dm’ himself, Gru (voice of Steve Carell) as he attends,...

‘Despicable Me 4’ Review: Gru’s Family Grows in Illumination Animation That Serves Up Familiar Antics
Image
In Despicable Me 4, the latest installment of Illumination Studio’s popular franchise, Gru (a winning Steve Carell) confronts the subtle villainy of suburban life. There’s something about the charmed aesthetics of Mayflower that doesn’t sit right. Maybe it’s the near-identical cottage-style homes, all painted the same shade of eggshell white and retrofitted with pristine pools; or perhaps it’s the residents, a wealthy and entitled bunch bent on excluding the unfamiliar. Whatever the reason, the vibes are certainly off.

Directed by Chris Renaud from a screenplay by The White Lotus creator Mike White and franchise stalwart Ken Daurio, Despicable Me 4 is a reliable follow-up for this financially dependable series. A new setting, new villain and new characters, including Gru and Lucy’s newborn Gru Jr., serve up enough fun and antics that will satisfy existing fans. The plot can sometimes feel like a chaotic melange stretched too thin,...

Despicable Me 4 Will Prove The Minions Are Box Office Gold Once Again
Image
For nearly 15 years, the Minions have been gracing the silver screen, dating back to the original "Despicable Me" in 2010. In the years since, a multi-billion-dollar industry has sprung up around the little troublemakers, from anchoring Illumination's slate of animation to tons of merchandise; they're basically little yellow pieces of gold. The Minions are set to once again prove their worth as "Despicable Me 4" will open in theaters just in time for the Fourth of July holiday. With the help of Steve Carrell's Gru, we are likely going to see one of the year's biggest box office debuts.

"Despicable Me 4" will hit theaters on Wednesday, July 3. Universal Pictures is releasing it mid-week to get in on the long holiday weekend. Across the five-day Wednesday to Sunday stretch, the film is expected to pull in at least $100 million, per Deadline. That is pretty much in line with more recent industry estimates,...

Despicable Me 4 Review: A Tired Franchise Crams Too Much Story, Forgets The Jokes [Annecy]
Image
It's been almost 15 years since "Despicable Me" burst onto the scene, heralding the arrival of a new powerhouse in American animation, a new money-printing machine, and the most popular animated characters in decades — the Minions.

Now, after several spin-offs, we're back to the main series, absent for seven years. And yet, in that time, not much has changed. Felonius Gru (Steve Carell) is still a reformed villain with zero temptation to return to his evil ways. He is still very much in love with his family — wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), and adopted daughters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (newcomer Madison Polan) — and doesn't seem to be doing anything with his army of hench-minions. The only new thing in this movie and Gru's world is the addition of a new child. Gru Jr. looks like a mini-Gru, but with slightly more hair. The addition of a child...

‘Despicable Me 4’ Review: Illumination Adds a Baby and Five Mega Minions to Gru’s Already Overcrowded Family
Image
Seven years have passed since the last “Despicable Me” movie, and the only thing that’s changed in Gru’s world is the addition of another child, Gru Jr., who’s the spitting image of his dad: hook nose, shifty eyes, squatty head — just with slightly more hair. The addition of a biological son to a family of three adopted daughters (not to mention a platoon of unmanageable Minions) would be plot enough for “Despicable Me 4,” but whatever drama the new kid might cause goes underexamined in Illumination’s overstuffed sequel. At times, it feels less like a feature than a collection of Looney Tunes-y shorts piled one on top of another.

Returning director Chris Renaud crams in a new villain, a teenage protégé, several visits to Gru’s old boarding school, a heist (to steal a ferocious honey badger) and a hasty attempt to put the family...

‘Despicable Me 4’ Enjoys Homecoming Welcome As It Makes French Premiere In Annecy
Image
Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 received an ecstatic homecoming welcome as it made its French premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Thursday.

The Annecy screening was arguably as special as its starry world premiere in New York on June 9 – with cast led by Steve Carell, Will Farrell and Kristen Wiig in attendance – but for different reasons.

“This franchise has a long history with Annecy,” festival director Marcel Jean told the crowd gathered in Annecy’s 1,000-seat Bonlieu cinema theatre.

“All four episodes of the franchise have been screened at the festival in this theatre,” he continued to applause.

The cast were not present on Thursday, but director Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage took to the stage and more than 60 members of the Illumination crew were in the audience. This meant that for once, the audience stayed until the end of the credits.

“I’m actually here hoping I don’t get emotional,...

Despicable Me 4 Promo Pokes Fun At Black Adam Star The Rock, Warner Bros., And The McU's Slate Reveals
Image
There's less than a month to go until Despicable Me 4 arrives in theaters, and Illumination has released a new promo which takes a shot of Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Warner Bros.' tax write-offs, and the MCU.

The pro wrestler and actor vowed to change the "hierarchy of power" in the DC Extended Universe with the 2022 movie, only for it to flop at the box office and bomb with critics and fans alike. From there, Johnson's plans to take over the franchise failed and he was promptly ousted when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.

As for the 100-year slate of "Mega Minions" movies, it's a tongue-in-cheek dig at Marvel Studios and its habit of revealing slates of movies and TV shows years before they're released.

It's all meant in good fun, though we're sure Johnson doesn't appreciate being made fun of in this way.

10 Most Anticipated Movies of Summer 2024 From ‘Inside Out 2’ to ‘Twisters’
Image
With the unofficial beginning of summer — Memorial Day — come and gone, the season has entered full swing. Several of the summer weekends will be crowded at the box office with sometimes three releases competing on similar dates. With action films like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters taking us through July, some animated adventures like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 will provide fun for whole families.

Deadpool 3 will cap off July with a new Marvel installment from Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, making way for more sinister films ahead of fall like M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Alien: Romulus. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice deserves an honorable mention although it won’t hit theaters until September to lead into spooky season and October.

This Is A Very Serious Review Of The New Despicable Me 4 Minions Popcorn Bucket
Image
This summer, "Despicable Me 4" is coming to theaters, bringing back Steve Carell as Gru, the super-villain who has since become an agent of the Anti-Villain League. Over the years, Gru and his girls Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan) have been through plenty of wild adventures, and now that they're joined by Gru's wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), they're welcoming a little bundle of joy into the family: Gru Jr., who is apparently intent on tormenting his dad.

However, the family will be forced on the run, as Gru is forced to deal with a new nemesis in the form of Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara). Of course, the little yellow Minions will be joining them, ensuring there will be plenty of chaos (and bananas and farts) in theaters this summer.

Since the "Despicable Me" franchise is obviously very serious,...

Despicable Me 4: The Minions Get Superpowers In Fun New Trailer For Animated Sequel
Image
The Despicable Me movies always do very well at the box office (even if the reviews haven't remained quite as positive), so it came as no surprise that a fourth instalment in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's animated franchise was on the way, and a new trailer and poster have now been released.

Though Gru will appear, the Minions have really become the main focus of these movies, and there's plenty of fun to be had with the little yellow fellas in this latest teaser, which sees several "volunteers" transformed into super-powered Mega-Minions.

One gains stretchy abilities like Mr. Fantastic, another is a clear not to The Thing, and there's also a Minion with Cyclops-like optic blasts.

Check out the new trailer and poster below, and let us know if you plan on catching this one on the big screen.

Despicable Me 4 | New, possibly final trailer lands
Steve Carell, Chris Renaud, Jemaine Clement, Miranda Cosgrove, Pierre Coffin, Elsie Fisher, and Dana Gaier in Despicable Me (2010)
Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have released the final trailer (we think?) for the latest entry in the Despicable Me series, Despicable Me 4, premiering in July.

With the release of The Fall Guy last week, summer blockbuster season has officially arrived, which means lots of eyes are looking at the year’s biggest and splashiest projects and watching how they perform commercially. One such set of eyes will be those of Universal Pictures, who will be keen to retain its crown as the studio that grossed the most money last year and as such, the performance of its biggest movies will play a key role.

Whilst the jury is still out on whether The Fall Guy will be numbered among its successes, hopes will be high that Despicable Me 4 – set to release in July – will be a strong addition to Universal’s balance sheet. After all, 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru...

The Best Universal Theme Park Rides Based on Movies, Ranked
Image
It's not unusual for a popular movie to inspire merchandise and spinoffs, but Universal knows that the best way to celebrate its best creations is by giving them a theme park ride. Many are familiar with Disneyland and the many adventures it has to offer, but Universal stands as a competitor on the up and up, building its own fascinating theme park empire.

With locations across the globe, including one, Universal Orlando, close to Walt Disney World, they're arguably tied for popularity. Still, Universal has some incredible movie-based rides that don't get as much attention as they deserve. The theme park company boasts many attractions, from Shrek-based adventures and an immersive Jurassic Park experience to a tour of the magical world of Harry Potter.

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.

In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.

Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).

“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.
