Rio Open: Comeback win helps Alcaraz set up final rematch with Norrie
Image
Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Feb 26 (Ians) Spanish former World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz twice came back from the brink of defeat and also braved a niggle to his upper left leg to overcome qualifier Nicolas Jarry of Chile in three sets in the semifinals of the Rio Open Atp Tour event here. He will next face Briton Cameron Norrie in the final.

Alcaraz, who is on a perfect run following his return from injury that kept him out of the Australian Open, was facing a really tough time against Jarry, who was giving the Spaniard all he could handle in Saturday’s Rio Open semifinals.

The Chilean was twice within two games of victory at 4-4 and 5-5 in the second set, with Alcaraz receiving treatment on his upper left leg after holding on both of those occasions.

But just when he seemed at his most vulnerable, not having seen a...

Rio Open: Alcaraz, Norrie reach semis, remain on course for a rematch of Buenos Aires final
Image
Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Feb 25 (Ians) Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz continued his perfect record in 2023 with a fighting 6-4, 7-6(0) win over Serbian Dusan Lajovic and advanced to the semifinals of the Rio Open here on Friday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard, the former World No. 1 who has recently returned from an injury break, rallied from 2-4 down in both the first and second sets before putting away the World No. 80 for the second time in as many weeks, having beaten the 29-year-old 6-4, 6-2 in the Buenos Aires quarterfinals.

Second seed Cameron Norrie kept alive the possibility of a final showdown with Alcaraz for the second consecutive week after he rallied from a set down to defeat Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

But Norrie will be looking for a good start on Saturday against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who reached his second consecutive semifinal after taking out countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas...

Tennis: Home favourite Monteiro takes out Dominic Thiem in Rio Open
Image
Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Feb 21 (Ians) Local star Thiago Monteiro reached the second round at a tour-level event for the first time this season when he clawed past former champion Dominic Thiem 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(2) at the Rio Open here.

In a hard-fought clash in the Atp 500 event on Monday night, the home favourite raced out of the blocks, winning the first five games before sealing the set on serve.

After the former World No. 3 Thiem levelled scores by winning the second set 6-3, Monteiro held his nerve in the third set, saving all four break points he faced to advance after two hours and 46 minutes in their first Atp head-to-head meeting.

The 28-year-old Monteiro, currently No. 80 in the Atp Live Rankings, is making his seventh appearance at the clay-court tournament in Brazil, with his best result being a quarterfinal run in 2017. Monteiro will look to reach that stage again...
