Tori Matsuzaka and Shota Sometani lead the film as Togashi and Komiya, respectively. This story delves into the madness and passion of those captivated by the fleeting brilliance of the 100-meter dash—an athletic moment lasting less than 10 seconds. It has resonated with readers, sparking reactions like “It fired me up!” and “A feeling I’ve never had from a sports manga,” and has maintained a passionate fanbase even after its conclusion.

In the voice cast, we have Tori Matsuzaka as Togashi, a naturally gifted sprinter, and Shota Sometani as Komiya, who becomes obsessed with the 100-meter sprint after meeting Togashi. Both are renowned actors with strong reputations for their voice work,...

Tôri Matsuzaka in Call Boy (2018)
Film Analysis: Love’s Whirlpool (2014) by Daisuke Miura
Tôri Matsuzaka in Call Boy (2018)
Daisuke Miura, although not particularly celebrated, is one of the most interesting filmmakers working in Japan today. The fact that he frequently writes his own scripts, which occasionally are based on his own stage plays, but most of all, that he also deals with erotic movies are definitely among the elements that make him stand out. Furthermore, that in an industry like the Japanese, where nudity, particularly of women actors can be a huge issue, he manages to have big names in his cast adds to his whole ‘legacy'. Before the rather successful “Call Boy” which featured names like Tori Matsuzaka and Ami Tomite, he managed to come with another erotic movie, “Love's Whirlpool”, featuring Sosuke Ikematsu, Mugi Kadowaki, Tasuku Emoto and Hirofumi Arai. Let us see what it is all about.

Premiering Via VOD, Digital Platforms & Film Movement Plus On June 14, 2024

The movie is based on the novel “Ai...

Film Review: We’re Millennials. Got a Problem? The Movie (2023) by Nobuo Mizuta
Image
Context is something that's probably needed before stepping into Nobuo Mizuta's “We're Millennials. Got a Problem? International” for two reasons. Firstly, it is the spin-off film of the comedy-drama television series of the same name which first aired in 2016. This would explain some of the backstory and in-jokes established form the start, alluded to in numerous meta flashback moments. Secondly, the ‘yutori' generation to which the Japanese title (“Yutori desu ga nani ka”) refers to those born between 1987 and 1996, when educational reforms intended to reduce the burden on students, allowing for greater creativity. This is, therefore, a generation with the stigma of being afforded some more breaks that those before them. So, a little more than just millennials in age.

Let's Get Divorced (2023)
“Let’s Get Divorced” is a Japanese series on Netflix starring Tori Matsuzaka, Riisa Naka, Ryo Nishikido, and Yuka Itaya.

The show is a comedy that prioritizes entertainment, amusement, and distraction from everyday life. It explores the problems of divorce, but without moralizing. The show is enjoyable, straightforward, and it’s almost impossible not to like the two main characters despite their differences.

The plot revolves around a couple who no longer love each other and wants to get a divorce. Despite their optimism, external circumstances make it challenging to achieve their goal. They must work together to navigate these obstacles and reach their desired outcome.

The show offers a pleasant view of modern Japan, where characters are caught between traditional and modern ways of life. It’s a comedy that lets two great actors do what they do best, making the audience laugh with their eccentric performances and comedic situations.

Film Review: Whisper of the Heart (2022) by Yuichiro Hirakawa
Image
Based on a manga by Aoi Hiiragi, Yoshifumi Kondo’s anime “Whisper of the Heart” was one of the most popular anime titles of the 90s, even becoming the highest grossing Japanese film of 1995. Yuichiro Hirakawa presents his own version now, again drawing inspiration from the original story, but moving into different narrative paths.

Whisper of the Heart is screening in select theaters in the US, courtesy of Capelight Pictures

The film unfolds in two axes, one in the present, when our main heroes, Shizuku and Seiji, are 25 years old, and one in the past, ten years before. To take things from the beginning, during their middle school years, both protagonists are extreme bookworms, who compete for who will first get the new novel from the school library. Following Shizuku’s investigation on her adversary’s identity, the two eventually meet, and realize that they have too much in common,...

Film Review: Wandering (2022) by Lee Sang-il
Image
I consider Lee Sang-il one of the best filmmakers working in the Japanese movie industry at the moment, with titles like “Villain” and “Rage” highlighting the fact in the most eloquent fashion. As such, that he had not shot another feature since the latter in 2016, came as a surprise. Thankfully, last year, we finally saw another work of his coming out, with “Wandering” not disappointing at all.

Wandering is screening as part of Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2023

9-year-old Sarasa spends her day in the park, having run away from her aunt’s house. On a rainy evening, 19-year-old student Fumi Saeki stumbles upon her, and seeing that she is soaking wet, takes her to his apartment. The two hit it off immediately, and end up living together for the next two months. The police, however, are searching for the girl, and when they finally get to her, Fumi is arrested for kidnapping,...

Trailer for the Live-Action Gatchaman Movie!
The first full trailer for Japan's live-action adaptation of the anime series Gatchaman has been released! The original series was produced in Japan in 1972 and was eventually brought to the states in the '80s and retitled Battle of the Planets. A few years ago a CG animated adaptation of the series was being developed by the animation studio Imagi, but when they went out of business the movie died, which is a shame.

I would have loved to see the animated film they were working on, but the live-action movie still looks cool, and I'm sure it will be really fun, especially for those of us who are fans of the original series. Here's the synopsis:

Set in the near future, Gatchaman follows the story five special agents of the International Science Organization in Tokyo as they try to protect the world from the mysterious terrorist group who call themselves Galactor.
