‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Announced by Universal
Image
Turn on the security cameras, because Freddy Fazbear is on the loose again. “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” one of 2023’s most unexpected box-office sensation, is getting a sequel from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse.

Jim Orr, Universal Pictures President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, announced the news on Wednesday, during the company’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. No other news about the film — such as a release window, creative team, or cast — was unveiled.

The announcement comes six months after “Five Nights at Freddy’s” became a hit at the October box office, where it grossed $297.2 million on a mere $20 million budget. A sequel film was probably greenlit by Act 3 of the first one.

The success of the film, an adaptation of the viral indie horror video game franchise by Scott Cawthon, was especially impressive given Universal’s decision to release it simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service Peacock. The...

But Blumhouse’s luck turned around three weeks later. That’s when their video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) reached theatres – and that movie has officially become their highest-grossing production!

The Five Nights at Freddy's movie includes Easter eggs from the game Sister Location, hinting at the possibility of future films set in different locations. Five Nights At Freddy's Review: Josh Hutcherson Brings Heart To A Mediocre Horror
Image
Five Nights at Freddy's is a basic horror film adaptation of the popular video game, with a simple story and lukewarm jumpscares. The film focuses on the relationship between the protagonist, Mike, and his sister Abby, while exploring the theme of letting go of past trauma. While not a great horror film, Five Nights at Freddy's has heart, some mystery, and can be enjoyable if expectations aren't too high.

Five Nights at Freddy’s adapts the video game of the same name from creator Scott Cawthon. In what seems like the first entry in a franchise, Five Nights at Freddy’s is a simple story grounded by a solid performance by Josh Hutcherson as Mike, who gives a committed performance. The film’s backstory is pretty dark, but the horror itself isn’t particularly scary, with typical, lukewarm jumpscares and only the occasional pop of blood. Directed by Emma Tammi from a...

Five Nights At Freddy's Review: A Campy, Gruesome, And Gloriously Funny Good Time
Image
Kids are generally smarter than we give them credit for. For the most part, they're curious, open-minded, and understand the most fundamental truth about the world far better than adults do: that life simply makes more sense through the prism of dream logic. For every children's movie that gets this right, it feels like there are a half-dozen more that fatally underestimate their own intended audience. "Five Nights at Freddy's" can safely count itself among those in the former category, thankfully, and it weaponizes this strength to deliver the year's most charming and unabashedly kid-friendly horror flick just in time for spooky season.

Director Emma Tammi clearly recognizes the appeal of adapting a property with the unique sensibilities and labyrinthine lore dictated by this film's source material, a video game franchise that can only be generously described as "idiosyncratic." Still, the basics have been streamlined enough for even the most casual viewer to grasp.

Nycc 2023: Emma Tammi Talks Five Nights At Freddy's & Scott Cawthorn's Input

Collaboration with Scott Cawthon was key in incorporating Easter eggs into Five Nights At Freddy's movie, with department heads also involved in the process. The movie aims to capture both the childlike wonderment and the terrifying elements of the game, focusing on the character of Abby and her perspective. Witness a hellish vision of 1999 as social isolation, analogue technology, and disturbing home videos fuse into a nightmare of found footage savagery that explores the dark side of 1990s nostalgia. With roots in Rock n’ Roll, Maggie Levin‘s ‘Shredding‘ tells the story of a dare that turns deadly… meanwhile ‘Suicide Bid‘ from Johannes Roberts (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, 47 Metres Down), explores the concept of college hazing through a claustrophobic horror tale that’s sure to terrify viewers.

‘V/H/S/99’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Steven Ogg, Alexia Ioannides, Emily Sweet, Dashiell Derrickson, Melanie Stone | Written by Maggie Levin, Johannes Roberts, Zoe Cooper, Flying Lotus, Chris Lee Hill, Tyler MacIntyre, Vanessa Winter, Joseph Winter | Directed by Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus, Tyler MacIntyre, Maggie Levin, Joseph Winter, Vanessa Winter

There’s a certain charm to the V/H/S franchise that I have never quite been able to put my finger on… until now. It’s that retro-style feel blended with the chilling horror elements that culminates in it feeling like both a warm hug and a rush of blood at the same time.

Are all of the movies in the franchise good? Certainly not. I’d argue that the first film is honestly the only truly great one… until now. V/H/S/99 is not only easily the best in the series since the first, but it’s also a legitimately chilling found footage horror anthology that comes...

On the eve of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Patchwork, director Tyler MacIntyre reflects on body image issues. twisting audience expections and his admiration for current female genre directors.

Patchwork finally gets its UK TV premiere on Horror Channel. Excited or what?

You were in attendance when Patchwork, your directorial feature debut, received its European premiere screening at FrightFest Glasgow 2016. What are your abiding memories?

I met a lot of awesome filmmakers and made some really good friends on that trip, particularly Joe Begos, who had The...

Bryan’s Favorites of 2017
Look, I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn when I say that 2017 was a garbage year for a lot of people, but it’s important to note that periods of turmoil often produce meaningful horror movies. For what it’s worth, it looks like 2017 has done just that, with a myriad of terrific movies from a variety of sources. So, without further ado, here are some of my horror highlights from the last 12 months:

It: I’m going to get this one out of the way early, not because I didn’t love it, but because I’m sure it’s on a lot of people’s lists, and you’ve already heard a ton about it. The huge hype over It actually kept me from watching it at first, as I have that rare disease that repels me from things that a bunch of people enjoy.

Fantasia Review: ‘Tragedy Girls’ is a Horror Comedy With Contagious, Biting Satire
You’re a couple of horror-obsessed high school seniors living in a boring town where the most salacious thing happening is an affair between your teacher Mrs. Kent (Nicky Whelan) and fire chief Big Al (Craig Robinson). You’re vlog/Twitter account searching for gore to capture and build an online presence is frequented by one of your mothers and no one else. And you’re forced to pretend to enjoy cheerleading and prom committee if for no other reason than to stay under the radar as sweet, wholesome kids in case you decide to partake in some excitement of your own through unsavory and illegal means. You can only stay composed for so long before stalking and luring a serial killer home, right? I mean self-control doesn’t grow on trees.

Patchwork is a Vanity Project that Hits the Mark: A Film Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the distributor, The Orchard. **there are a couple of minor spoilers here. Director: Tyler MacIntyre. Writers: Chris Lee Hill and Tyler MacIntyre. Cast: Tory Stolper, Tracey Fairaway, Maria Blasucci, James Phelps and Corey Sorenson. Patchwork has been completed since at least 2015. From director Tyler MacIntyre and writer Chris Lee Hill, the film has recently released through Video-on-demand, via The Orchard. A festival favourite, Patchwork involves a three-in-one deal, in which three women are sewn into one. The results should be horrifying, but they are more laugh worthy. Some of the awkward kissing scenes are laugh out loud funny. Meanwhile, a sub-villain and villain are pushing the action forward. One of the evil wretch's identity is only revealed near the end of the film. Also, the writers take the topic of cosmetic surgery to the point of hyperbole. What would...
