They’re Huge on TikTok. Is That Enough to Make It as a DJ?
Image
It was the Friday of July 4th weekend and, as expected, the Montauk crowd was partying. At Gurney’s Beach Club, 20- and 30-somethings danced to “Where You Are” by John Summit and Hayla, screaming along to the lyrics. The espresso martinis were flowing as gaggles of club-goers approached the DJ booth, asking the woman behind the turntable for a selfie.

Soundtracking the party was Christina “Tinx” Najjar, a social media creator with 1.5 million TikTok followers. She’s written a bestselling book, “The Shift: Change Your Perspective, Not Yourself,” secured...

The MaXXXine World Premiere Had A-Listers and 'Protesters'
Image
The MaXXXine world premiere in Hollywood featured A-list stars, epic red carpet moments, and a meta celebration of fame and celebrity. Director Ti West emphasized the importance of experiencing the film in a theater setting during the jam-packed screening at the TLC Chinese Theatre. MaXXXine, the third part of a horror trilogy with Mia Goth, intertwines fame, secrets, and a deadly game of survival against a backdrop of Hollywood's dark past. It hits theaters Fourth of July weekend.

MovieWeb just attended the June 24 world premiere of MaXXXine world premiere in Hollywood, where director Ti West, star Mia Goth, and plenty of other A-listers were in attendance. Breaking Bad alum Giancarlo Esposito put on a clinic on the red carpet, where protesters were also seen waving disparaging signs about the dangers of Hollywood. After a closer glance, however, it became clear these demonstrators were just one of many aspects that the premiere had gleefully organized.

How Electronic Musician Aluna Went From Being a Feature Artist to The Main Event
Image
With more than 40 shows under her belt this year, electronic music artist Aluna Francis had one aim for Miami-based music festival III Points: to reconnect with her Black, queer fanbase. An hour before stepping on stage Saturday, she stopped to snap pictures, give hugs and later invited the Edm enthusiasts backstage as she cooed over a thunderous bass line.

“Connecting the Black ravers with a meet-up seems like a small thing, but today it’ll be everything to me,” Francis tells Rolling Stone from a III Points lounge. “Because the...

The Best Things We Saw at Electric Zoo 2023
Image
Electric Zoo returned to Randall’s Island Park this Labor Day weekend, but not without some conflict. The first day of the festival was canceled on Friday, hours before gates opened, due to incomplete construction of the main stage. Agitated crowds breached the gates Sunday after being informed the venue reached its capacity. Despite stage design errors and start time delays, the artists who were able to perform during the remaining two days electrified audiences with bass-heavy hits and hypnotic visuals.

Erick the Architect Reunites with James Blake on New Song “Parkour”: Stream
Image
Flatbush Zombies member Erick the Architect has returned with “Parkour,” his first new single of 2023 which is produced by James Blake. Stream the track below.

A reflection of Erick’s journey after moving to Los Angeles from his native Brooklyn, “Parkour” starts with pitched-up vocals that are then slowed down to a sinister tone before the rapper’s normal voice cuts through Blake’s spacy production. On the track, Erick describes coming up in New York City with lyrics like, “When I was growing up, we all had different crews/ I always knew what’s up/ If you down to bust a move.”

Back in 2020, Blake produced the Flatbush Zombies loosie “Afterlife,” after which Erick returned the favor by contributing to “I Keep Calling” on the producer’s EP Before. Prior to “Parkour,” Erick’s most recent solo singles were 2021’s “Self Made” and last year’s “No Ice” featuring Akthesavior.

Image
Life Is Beautiful kicked off on Friday in the heart of Las Vegas, with thousands of festival-goers scurrying to the Sin City for the buzzy three-day show that turns Vegas’s eclectic downtown into a psychedelic desert amusement park.

The Life Is Beautiful footprint takes up 18 blocks of downtown Las Vegas, an area of town once known for cheap drinks, seedy motels and a string of pawn shops. However, this slice of Vegas has turned into a hipster haven known for funky art installations, home-grown farm-to-table restaurants and, cheap drinks.

New Trailer for 'Underplayed' Documentary About Female Edm DJs
Tygapaw, Alison Wonderland, Olivia Nervo, Miriam Nervo, TokiMonsta, and Rezz in Underplayed (2020)
"We've been missing a voice... And we don't even know what that is." LevelFilm in Canada has released an official trailer for the indie documentary titled Underplayed, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Filmed over the summer festival season, Underplayed presents a portrait of the current status of the gender, ethnic, and sexuality equality issues in dance music. The doc film profiles a number of different female Edm DJs and musicians, examining how underrepresented and underplayed they are in the Edm (Electronic Dance Music) community. It's an attempt to right the wrongs and highlight great talent shaking things up. The film features Nervo, Rezz, Alison Wonderland, Tygapaw, TOKiMONSTA, with an original score composed by Kate Simko. It's available on VOD now for anyone to give this a look if they're interested in watching. Alas, as much as I love the Edm scene, I really did not...

‘Underplayed’ Review: Doc on Women in Edm Dances Around Toxic Sexism, But Finds Its Rhythm in Celebrating DJ Heroines
Image
It’s no secret that nearly every genre of music outside of pop itself suffers from a moderate or severe gender imbalance problem, but the spotlight rarely falls on how women fare in electronic dance music. So students of sexism in the arts may take a ready interest in “Underplayed,” a handsomely photographed documentary from Amazon Prime that argues persuasively for women getting more seats at the table — or standup spots behind the turntable — even if it’s better at offering up underdog tales of individual female DJs who’ve triumphed than it is at getting at root causes of why they might’ve been held down.

In lieu of narration, director Stacey Lee peppers “Underplayed” with a lot of flash cards with deeply discouraging statistics about how many women are making it in this corner of pop culture. In 2019, the 15 highest paid DJs made $261 million, and they were all dudes,...

Suzanne Ciani
TIFF Review: Underplayed Takes a Resonant Look at Gender Inequality in the Edm Scene
Suzanne Ciani
Like every industry built under the watchful eye of a global patriarchy, the Edm scene is grossly tilted in favor of its male artists. And like many of those same industries, this fact exists despite the presence of women pioneers at the inception of electronic sound as a medium. For every Robert Moog that acknowledged their genius (he enlisted Clara Rockmore’s expertise to better the advancement of his synthesizer), there were unfortunately countless others like Don Buchla, who agreed to sponsor a class for recent grads like Suzanne Ciani before declaring it closed to women—of which she was to be the only one. So gatekeeping manifests at the level of education, the level of access, and ultimately the level of success.

The numbers don’t lie. Less than three percent of the field’s production and technical roles are women. Less than three-tenths of a percent are women of color.

Tribeca-Bound ‘Underplayed’ Puts Spotlight on Gender Inequality in Electronic Music
TokiMonsta
Among the documentaries premiering at this year’s TriBeCa Film Festival is Stacey Lee’s debut feature-length project, “Underplayed,” about the gender inequality in electronic music. No stranger to the festival, Lee’s documentary short, “Live Fast, Draw Yung,” about a seven-year-old rap portrait artist and his relationship with his father, premiered at TriBeCa in 2015.

“Underplayed” was initiated by Bud Light Canada and presented to Toronto native and music video veteran Director X, who put Lee’s name forward. Shot over a period of six months, Lee brings viewers into the professional and personal worlds of established superstars like TOKiMONSTA and Alison Wonderland, newcomers like Sherelle and hardworking underground artists like Tigerpaw. Beautifully shot and creatively edited, “Underplayed” was made with an all-female crew.

“I’m a female filmmaker in an industry that is also underrepresented,” says Lee. “My own trajectory to being taken seriously was long and hard.”

Chicano indie-pop star Cuco joined forces with electronic producer Dillon Francis to release their new track, “Fix Me.” The two debuted the track on Wednesday, via Zane Lowe’s World Record show on Beats 1.

In true sad- boy fashion, Cuco begs his crush for a shot at love in both English and Spanish — and though he may be fragile, he warns, he’s willing to front all the cutesy texts and FaceTime calls he can to win her heart. The lyric video sees Cuco and Francis, molded like G.I. Joe dolls,...

Ariana Grande to Make Surprise Appearance at Coachella (Exclusive)
Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande will make a surprise appearance at the Coachella music festival on Friday night, Variety has learned.

The performance will occur on the same day the pop star released her newest single, “No Tears Left to Cry” (read Variety‘s review here). The song was inspired by the May 2017 bombing at a Grande concert in Manchester, England that left 23 people dead, including the bomber.

Headlining Friday’s weekend two lineup is The Weeknd, whose latest album “My Dear Melancholy,” was released earlier this month. The Weeknd and Grande previously collaborated on the hit single “Love Me Harder,” which Grande released in 2014 as part of her album, “My Everything.”

The pair have since made multiple joint appearances to duet on the sultry track, including a performance on “Saturday Night Live” and a viral live acoustic rendition posted to Grande’s YouTube page that has garnered more than 17 million views.
