The late Norman Lear’s life and legacy took center stage tonight at the 2023 Sentinel Awards at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.
The awards, which celebrate the storytellers behind some of the year’s most impactful stories, heard a statement from Lyn Lear read at the start of the show by Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center.
“I would have been there tonight if not for the passing of our beloved Norman. He was so proud of the work of The Lear Center and Hollywood Health and Society. And he would not have wanted all of us to mourn. He would want us to celebrate the important shows you are honoring tonight, and most of all… he would want us to laugh.”
The night celebrated Lear’s lasting impact on television and the world, underlining his strong advocacy that television and storytelling makes a difference.

In a sad bit of coincidence, the Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center honored its 2023 Sentinel Awards winners on Wednesday night, just hours after the passing of its namesake and inspiration, the legendary Norman Lear.
Emmy-winning comedian and writer Larry Wilmore hosted the event and introduced this year’s 11 winners, including writers behind the series “Mrs. Davis,” “Fleishman is in Trouble” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” But before the awards were handed out, Wilmore took a moment to pay tribute to Lear. And remarks from Lear’s wife, Lyn, were shared with the audience.
“Well you got to say this about Norman – the man knew how to make an exit,” Wilmore joked. “He knew his audience. And wanted us to make sure we were all listening.
“A giant has left us and we’re going to do him proud,” he added. “This evening meant a lot...

Netflix Launches Created By Initiative Offering Script Development Deals to Underrepresented Writers
As part of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, the streamer has announced its first-ever Netflix Created By Initiative, which aims to increase representation of underrepresented talent behind the camera and that, in turn, facilitates more wholistic on-screen portrayals. The program will host 14 mid-level film and series writers who will be offered script development deals.
To identify talent, the platform harnessed expertise from six leading organizations that are at the forefront of creating access to underrepresented creators within the industry, including The National Hispanic Media Coalition, Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment, Native American Media Alliance, The Black TV and Film Collective, Outfest and Inevitable Foundation. Each partner organization nominated candidates from their own writers programs, with the streamer selecting the final recipients.

Comedian Zach Anner tends to show up on our radar from time to time, and for his latest project, he is tackling an issue that is (literally) one of America's hottest topics. Anner is the host of Earth Your While, a series about climate change that is available through SoulPancake.
In Earth Your While, Anner embarks on a journey to learn more about the environment and gauge the positions of ordinary citizens. In the premiere episode, his research comes in the form of man-on-the-street interviews with men, women, children, and one pig. Hannah Cranston, the co-host of The Young Turks' ThinkTank channel, makes a guest appearance.
Earth Your While bears a strong likeness to Anner's previous partnership with SoulPancake, Have A Little Faith. In that series, which has spanned 29 episodes so far, the topic on the table is religion, but no matter the issue at hand, Anner brings a...

In 2014, the digital entertainment studio Rooster Teeth invited its fans to suss out the details of a murder-mystery when it launched a series called Ten Little Roosters. A sequel to that show has since been greenlit, and it is now just a few days away from its premiere date. A trailer The Eleven Little Roosters, a spy-mystery-thriller that looks to be bigger and bloodier than its predecessor.
The titular Roosters are international spies who must figure out which one of them is a traitor. In each episode, characters will be killed off, and the viewers who accurately predict plot points by synthesizing clues like hidden Qr codes, in-dialogue hints, and audio cues will win prizes.
Even for viewers who aren’t super sleuths, The Eleven Little Roosters will have plenty of entertainment value. Its offbeat characters will generate plenty of comedy, and Rooster Teeth aficionados will recognize many of their favorite personalities among the cast.

Zach Anner doesn't post videos to his YouTube channel as frequently as he used to, but the content he does release is always great. The comedian--now based in Los Angeles--has released a new episode of his Workout Wednesdays series, and it has received more than 700,000 views in two days. Anner, who has cerebral palsy, is a big hit on the Internet, and Workout Wednesdays--where he accomplishes athletic feats while delivering a comedic monologue--has scored more than a million views over its first 11 episodes. The 12th episode, which manages to be both self-depreciating and inspirational at the same time, is one pace to outdo every Workout Wednesday video yet. It features Anner's attempt to walk a twelfth of a mile while constantly cracking jokes along the way. Check it out, and don't forget to laugh; that's the entire point. Workout Wednesday #12 is also a personal milestone for Anner: It's the 100th video on his YouTube channel,...

Zach Anner came to national attention back in 2010 when he participated in Oprah Winfrey's Your Own Show contest by releasing a video stating the reasons he should be the next big thing in TV. Anner has cerebral palsy, and he quickly became an Internet favorite. Despite our fervent support, Anner didn't win Oprah's contest; however, that's not stopping him from rolling along. Anner has released the first episode of Riding Shotgun, in which Anner, his brother, and two of their friends go on a road trip across the Us (and Canada). Reddit will play a big role in Riding Shotgun. The show has its own subreddit, where fans previously voted for the cities they wanted Anner to visit during his trip. After Anner picked out eight choices from the nominees, fans were then encouraged to post the highlights of their favorite cities so that Zach would know what...

I'll never forget my first encounter with local comedian Zach Anner in 2004. He was trying to get the attention of Ron Perlman after the special SXSW screening of Hellboy, and I assisted him through the crowd. Born with cerebral palsy, Anner is wheelchair-bound, which can make it very difficult to navigate film festival crowds. Not only was Anner successful in his celebrity interview, but Perlman stayed until the wee hours of the morning talking with his fans -- what I refer to as "a South By Moment," where personal connections are made to ground oneself during the deafening roar of all things SXSW.
Now it's Anner's turn on the big screen at SXSW -- he gained local notoriety by winning his own show through a competition created by Oprah Winfrey, and has been busy directing and starring in his own films. You can see his work in foolproof, a short...

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.

I am a big fan of The Good Wife! I love Alicia, Will and the gang. I especially like Michael J. Fox, using his disability in his character -- we need more of this! But, it reminds me of the opportunities we are missing.
Recently, we see on Own a program about a young man Zach Anner hosting a traveling program -- in the trailer he is kayaking, zip-lining, going on the Price is Right, etc. It is wonderful there is a program with a Person with a Disability. But, it is equally appalling! What is the message to children with dramatic differences? Unless you can become a public "freak show" there is no value to society? It's entertaining, but not inspirational to People with Disabilities. I am proud of Zach, not of Own!

Zach Anner won over the Internet as he campaigned for a slot on the Oprah Winfrey Network's "Your Own Show" reality competition, then won over Oprah herself as he took home the title. Now, it's time for the rest of America to fall in love with the Texan.
"Rollin' With Zach" follows the 27-year-old comedian, who has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair to get around, as he pursues his dream of traveling the country. In addition to your typical sightseeing activities, he also goes rappelling and rides one of those crazy amusement park carousel/swing things that are way scarier than they look.
"For a guy who has cerebral palsy, I never thought I'd be doing this," he says.
Aside from his breezy, natural sense of humor, you can tell Anner is up for anything based on the sheer quantity of spandex and sequins he dons in the two-minute preview.

Aside from his breezy, natural sense of humor, you can tell Anner is up for anything based on the sheer quantity of spandex and sequins he dons in the two-minute preview.

EW readers largely supported Zach Anner back when he was competing to get a show on the Own network (even amid that purported voting “scandal”). Well, a few months later and all of that behind him, Anner, who has cerebral palsy (the “sexiest of the palsies”) is set to debut his new travel show, Rollin’ With Zach, for which the first promo was released today.
In the video, viewable at the Own site, it seems that Anner hasn’t lost an ounce of the wit and charm that first won our attention, votes, and hearts. He surfs and rides choppers,...

They got Oprah's blessing - and now they have their Own show! Kristina Kuzmic and Zach Anner, winners Winfrey's Your Own Show competition, will premiere their shows on the network in December. On Ambush Cook, Kuzmic helps people who typically rely on delivery, dining out or frozen meals for their meals learn to cook for themselves, helping them with everything from grocery shopping to food prep and serving. She makes mouth-watering dishes like braised short ribs and pistachio-crusted tilapia look easy. "Instead of going to grab a bite to eat, I say let's make a bite to eat," Kuzmic tells one participant.

The Oprah Winfrey Network's first competitive reality series, Your Own Show, ended its low-rated first (and thus probably last) season on Friday night with predictable ending: Oprah refused to pick between the two finalists, Zach Anner and Kristina Kuzmic-Crocco. She didn't even fake out one of them, she just said, "The truth is that both of you have given your heart, and the truth is that both of you really deserve to have your own...

Zach Anner’s journey to winning his very own show on Oprah’s Own cable television network and soon becoming the Winfrey of Generation Next hadn’t quite begun in 2008 in a convention hall at SXSW in Austin, Texas with an interview from yours truly about Anner’s mockumentary web series, but I’m mentioning all that as a selfish way for me to be able to say, “I knew the guy when...” Anner’s journey from Austin-based comic to cable television host actually began in June 2010 when he uploaded a video submission to be a contestant on the reality TV program Your Own Show: Oprah’s Search for the Next TV Star. 4Chan, Reddit, Jon Mayer, and then the internet at large almost immediately endorsed the video and championed Mayer as their feel-good TV host of the future. Your Own Show included a series of elimination tests, all of which Anner obviously aced,...

As far as successful Internet campaigns go, Zach Anner is the Betty White of Own.
Friday night, Oprah Winfrey announced that Anner, who became an early favorite on 'Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star' after his video submission went viral online, would get his very own show on her network. Winfrey also gave a show to fellow finalist Kristina Kuzmic-Crocco.
"Both of you have given your heart and the truth is that both of you really deserve to have your own show," Winfrey told the two winners. "I'm going to make that happen."

In a twist you would only find on an Oprah show, both finalists Kristina Kuzmic-Crocco and Zach Anner both won their own show on Oprah's television host search "Your Own Show: Oprah's Search For the Next TV Star."
"You get your own show, you get your own show," Oprah said to both finalists, who were narrowed down from a group of 10 who faced challenges with celebrity guests along the way, including Dr. Phil, Suze Orman, and O herself.
Zach Anner, who has cerebral palsy, won the hearts of viewers with his humor and spirit. In his show, "Rollin' Around the World," the wheelchair-bound host will travel around the world coping with everything that could possibly go wrong on vacation.
Kristina Kuzmic-Crocco wants to invite viewers into her "Fearless Kitchen," where she wants viewers to drop their excuses and their bad eating habits and get back into their kitchens.

Of all the shows coming up on Own, the one that screams “become obsessed with me!” is definitely Your Own Show. The who-wants-to-be-the-next-Oprah series taps into some of the best parts of reality contest shows: The contestants are vivacious and well-matched, and the ability to host a show is one we can all easily judge. Sure, it’s a lot of people kissing Oprah’s butt, and it gets a liiiiitle bit schlocky. But! There’s something so upbeat and loving about everyone trying to be their best selves, etc etc.

hollywoodnews.com: Oprah Winfrey has been on television for over 25 years, but made her first appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour as the creator of Own, the Oprah Winfrey Network. Her mandate for programs is to encourage people, with the philosophy she’s brought to The Oprah Winfrey Show over the decades.
“After The Color Purple, I learned that God can dream a bigger dream for you than you can dream for yourself,” Winfrey said. “I try to live in that space that is the universe’s dream for me, the bigger dream. As you heard me say to Barbara Walters, my prayer is: use me. I see myself really as a messenger for a message that is greater than myself. The message is: You can. You can. You can. You can do and you can be and you can grow and it can get better and it...

Ten people have eight weeks to become Oprah. But no pressure!
Oprah Winfrey launched "Your Own Show" because, in her words, she "wants to give somebody else the chance that was given to me over 25 years ago." Executive producers Mark Burnett, along with hosts Nancy O'Dell and Carson Kressley ("I'm Suze Ormond," quipped Kressley) stopped by the TCA Press Tour on Thursday to introduce the 10 contestants.
One of the contestants, Zach Anner, has been the subject of some controversy due to some of the online voting, but Burnett impresses upon us that that controversy shouldn't overshadow the winner of the online poll. "The true web celeb is Dr. Tony Roach," he says, referring to one of the contestants, a minister who looks to spread a message of self-esteem. "Because he won the online poll to find his place within the past. I can't really even remember what the issue was.

In less than 48 hours, Oprah Winfrey is hoping her fans will consider nursing their New Years Eve hangovers with some fresh cable programming. The Oprah Winfrey Network will officially kick off at noon on New Years Day with an introductory special dubbed Oprah’s Guide to Own: The New Oprah Winfrey Network. Hosted by the Queen of Daytime herself, the hour-long program will recap Winfrey’s mission to “entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives” on what used to be the Discovery Health Channel (Own’s a joint venture between Harpo Inc. and Discovery Communications).

As Reddit goes, so goes the Republican Party? Today both Rush Limbaugh and Mike Huckabee have gone on record as saying that President Obama should send his family through a Tsa screening as a sign of good faith, which is the same thing a popular Internet campaign was saying last week. Who would have guessed that conservatives were actually getting their talking points from Reddit? Forget Sarah Palin. Lets look forward to Zach Anner in 2012!

After rocketing to internet stardom thanks to his audition video for Oprah Winfrey’s Your Own Show reality TV series — and unwittingly finding himself in the middle of a possible vote-rigging kerfuffle (see below) – the irrepressibly charming Zach Anner has taken his idea for “a travel show for people who never thought they could travel” to YouTube. Anner, who has cerebral palsy (which he calls “the sexiest of the palsies”), posted a series of videos about his current home town of Austin, Tex. back in June. But since he didn’t really need to travel all that far to shoot it,...

The final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show will air September 9, 2011. After that date, every time Oprah screams a celebrity's name it won't be broadcast by network television, but by her very own cable channel. Oprah announced the beginnings of the Oprah Winfrey Network way back in 2009, but with an imminent launch date scheduled for January 1, 2011, she's now starting to publicly wrangle programming and talent. And what better, more inexpensive way to find hidden gems across America and drum up publicity for your network's launch than with a good old fashioned online video contest. Last week, Oprah asked America to help her find the next Oprah. Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star solicits video submissions from individuals that have "it" (aka "infectious energy, unique sense of humor, and personality galore"). The top five entries with the most votes will become finalists, at least one finalist...

Created by Brad Anner, Zach Anner, Jordan Crowder, Chris Demarais, Aaron Marquis and Marshall Rimmer (all but Brad star in the show) The Wingmen suffers from a few things, not the least of which is the length of each episode. It’s quite possible that the several creative voices making this show also creates a preciousness that allows things to stay in that should be long gone or at the very least cut way down. The show has its fans out there though, with enough of them rallying behind the boys to net it a Streamy nomination earlier this year for the Audience Choice award.
