On Hgtv's "Design Star," a dozen designers have the dream, but only one (per season) can realize it.
That artistic cheese who stands alone is Emily Henderson, who takes home the title on the "Design Star" finale Sunday night (Aug. 22).
In the episode, both Emily and Michael Moeller get their final challenge: Using their perspective to create a new space for their client and tape a show segment to follow the process from beginning to end.
Aiding them are the previously eliminated contestants. Emily chooses Dan, Casey, Stacey, Tom and Alex. Michael has Courtland, Nina, Trent, Tera and Julia to help him out.
The fun part is that each designer gets to pick one teammate to be their "client."
Emily initially selects Dan, but after reevaluating, realizes he's too similar to her taste. She throws him over for buttoned-up, Halston-y Tom, whom she describes as "dangerous" -- not Tom, but her aesthetic risk-taking probably.

Can Emily Henderson and Michael Moeller bring themselves to destroy each other?
The former teammates go head-to-head on the Season 5 finale of Hgtv's "Design Star," airing Sunday, Aug. 22 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt.
The fifth season was tougher than ever, thanks to a new format that challenged the contestants up for elimination to tape a presentation of their designs so they can be judged on their hosting skills.
For the finale, the designers will have to present their (possible) future shows.
The final two:
Emily - She started out dismally by being in the Bottom Two of the first episode after failing the "white box challenge." She's nevertheless bounced back a bit, placing highly in many of the challenges, although she did fall in the Bottom 2 once again. Her quirky and bohemian style brings in surprises every now and then, and she definitely isn't afraid to use color or print.

Rooting for Team Gay on Hgtv's Design Star can be a rough gig. After out Miami designer David Bromstad won the crown in the show's first season and went on to become one of the network's most popular designers, all the other out contestants have either fizzled out early or come tantalizingly close only to get squeezed out in the end.
So which is it going to be this year? Out designer Michael Moeller has made it to the final four. Can he be the next gay Design Star?
Moeller, 30, is a New Yorker, and hoping to bring some hometown mojo to the series' seventh season, set in Manhattan and directed by reality show superstar Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Apprentice). He's been a designer for almost 10 years, and owned his own business for the last two years.

Why is Hgtv's Design Star like Noah's ark? Because the gays go two by two.
It seems like almost every season, they give us two out gay male contestants to interview and feature in our coverage of the interior design reality competition show. Season before last, we ended up with a third, stealth member, but my prediction is that no one in this season's cast is a gay cop who's also an ex-adult film star.
One thing I'm sure of, though: If you watch Design Star for the design, you'll enjoy the premiere episode. They skip the big intros and backstage drama and go right to most people's favorite challenge, the white room, with the added twist that each designer is creating a room for one of his or her fellow designers.
It's an opportunity to get to know all the designers really quickly (as well as for our first hint of backstabbing,...

Yep, it’s that time of year.
No, not the time to sip daiquiris alongside the pool or go catch some cool waves at the beach. It’s the time of year to watch summer television!
Truthfully, with most of broadcast television in reruns, it’s mostly cable and reality show offerings. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t something of interest to viewers of gay-related programming.
What’s worth watching this summer? The Great Gay is here to help you decide!
Who is the Great Gay is, you ask? Why, as always, I’m the collective wisdom of all who toil here at AfterElton.com, the sum total of years of endless, stupefying television viewing!
Okay, it’s mostly just me blathering on, with the others yelling at me whenever I get something wrong.
