Podtalk: Writer/Director Christian Swegal on Debut ‘Sovereign’
Image
Chicago – When a filmmaker makes a significant feature debut – in this case writer/director Christian Swegal for “Sovereign” – the movie world takes notice. This ripped-from-the-headlines emotional story features Nick Offerman in a searing lead performance, supported by Jacob Tremblay, Dennis Quaid and Martha Plimpton.

Based on real events, the story centers on Jerry (Offerman), an advocate and speaker regarding “Sovereign Citizens,” a society of anti-government and off the grid anarchists, who deflect on any law due to the perception that all law is not applicable to an individual’s rights of existence … so Jerry pays no mortgage on his house, or taxes, or driver’s license fees, etc. His home-schooled son is Joe (Tremblay), who travels the country with his father, helping to conduct seminars for other sovereign citizens.

Sovereign: Nick Offerman’s Based on Real Events Movie Is the Perfect Antithesis to Superman
Image
Sovereign is a story based on true-to-life events where a father-son duo kill two police officers in an infamous shootout known as the 2010 West Memphis police shootings. Starring Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay in leading roles, the film presents a provocative take on the modern world and the disregard for authority it inspires.

Although the film will be lost in the myriad of summer blockbusters and films like Superman, the Nick Offerman film wants to give out a quiet message about the current situation and how far people can go before all hell breaks loose.

Nick Offerman’s Sovereign Is the Perfect Antithesis to Superman

The father-son relationship in Sovereign, where Offerman’s Jerry Kane teaches his son Joe Kane extremist views about the world, and how they are above the law, is very similar to something that Jor-El said to David Corenswet’s Kal-El in James Gunn‘s Superman.

‘Sovereign’ Review: Nick Offerman Plays an Anti-Government Extremist in Uneven Thriller About American Powerlessness
Image
For Jerry Kane, the sovereign citizen movement is something between a political philosophy and a burgeoning psychosis. He criss-crosses the motel foyers of the American Midwest, giving sparsely attended seminars about how to avoid home foreclosures — a curriculum that hinges upon insisting that bank loans are “fictitious,” among other conspiratorial tactics. Clutching onto the character’s beliefs with a death grip as tight as it is tremulous, Nick Offerman’s volcanic performance makes it difficult to know where Jerry’s belief ends and his desperation begins.

That’s especially true for the extremist’s teenage son Joe (an unrecognizably grown-up Jacob Tremblay), who’s been raised in the shadow of his father’s anti-government rage, but also crushes on the girl next door and harbors secret fantasies of going to school like a normal kid. The Daniel Plainview of the “power to the people” lecture circuit, Jerry ropes his own...

Sovereign Review: A Necessary, Flawed, and Urgent Warning
Image
Christian Swegal’s “Sovereign” opens not with fanfare but with the quiet desperation of foreclosure notices piled on a kitchen table—a fitting metaphor for a nation drowning in its own contradictions. Set against the backdrop of Arkansas in 2010 (when the Tea Party was brewing and economic anxiety was curdling into something darker), this feature debut examines the true story of Jerry Kane, a self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” whose rejection of governmental authority would spiral into tragedy.

The film follows Jerry (Nick Offerman) and his teenage son Joe (Jacob Tremblay) as they exist in a liminal space between society and its margins. Jerry conducts seminars on tax avoidance and property rights to audiences of the economically desperate, while homeschooling Joe in both mathematics and conspiracy theories. Parallel to this narrative runs the story of police chief John Bouchart (Dennis Quaid) and his son Adam (Thomas Mann), creating a diptych of American...

‘Sovereign’ Review: Christian Swegal’s Unsettling Portrait of an Anti-Government Extremist
Image
Before QAnon-ers and Proud Boys, there were sovereign citizens. Originating in the 1970s as a far-right, anti-government movement characterized by a belief system based on misinterpretations of common law, the ideology and others like it have spread like kudzu in our era of economic stagnation and political instability. Now, writer-director Christian Swegal’s feature-length directorial debut, Sovereign, aims to put a human face on a once-fringe movement whose dogmatic belief in hyperindividualism and the illegitimacy of governance has, over the last decade, begun to color mainstream political discourse.

Joe Kane (Jacob Tremblay) is torn. The son of Jerry Kane (Nick Offerman), an Arkansan who travels around the country lecturing small gatherings of working-class Americans on their rights as sovereign citizens, Joe does his best to understand his father’s ideology while harboring secret desires for a more normal life. Meanwhile, former police chief John Bouchart (Dennis Quaid) pressures his adult son,...

‘Sovereign’ Review: Nick Offerman’s Fierce Turn as an Anti-Government Extremist Boosts a Timely Drama
Image
It’s been a particular pleasure to watch the blossoming of Nick Offerman’s acting career in recent years. The actor, who rose to fame with his hilariously droll performance as Ron Swanson in the hit series Parks and Recreation, has never stopped working. But his talent has really risen to the fore lately, especially with his heartbreaking, Emmy-winning guest appearance in HBO’s The Last of Us.

Now, with Christian Swegal’s feature debut Sovereign — receiving is world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival before its theatrical release on July 11 — he’s been given his meatiest film role to date. And boy, does he run with it.

He’s playing a role for which he has some previous experience. In Parks and Rec, his character was an anti-government libertarian. But what he played for comedy then is now deadly serious in this drama inspired by real-life events. The film,...

Donald Trump Bans Julianne Moore's 'Freckleface Strawberry' Kids Book

Donald Trump has banned actress Julianne Moore's book for children, Freckleface Strawberry, from the libraries of any school run by the Department of Defense. The Oscar winner was made aware of the news by the nonprofit group Pen America, which pointed out that hers is one of several books being outright removed or put under review for inclusion by the new administration in a post on social media.

Moore shared the news on her own social media on Sunday (though we first heard about it via Variety). "It is a great shock for me to learn that my first book, Freckleface Strawberry, has been banned by the Trump Administration from schools run by the Department of Defense," Moore wrote on her Instagram. Wild, Weird and Bloody: The Berlinale Shines a Light on Forgotten German Genre Films of the ’70s
Image
German movies of the 1970s will forever be linked with the New German Cinema movement, the auteur directors — led by the likes of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Margarethe von Trotta and Volker Schlöndorff — who shook the country out of its postwar stupor. “Papa’s Kino ist tot” (‘Papa’s cinema’s is dead’) was their motto, and they held radical new visions of what movies could do.

But alongside this art house wave, ’70s Germany also was a breeding ground for a cruder, more commercial strain of cinema, one that took inspiration from sexploitation and spaghetti Westerns, biker films and grindhouse horror and grafted it onto the zeitgeist-y themes of political upheaval and sexual liberation. The Berlinale pays tribute to this seldom-seen oeuvre of German genre cinema in its 2025 retrospective, which features 15 titles — cult classics and curios from both East and West Germany — that prove that German film could also be “wild,...

Robert Eggers Shouts Out Sergei Parajonav, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and More in the Criterion Closet
Image
When he’s not spooking and seducing with films like “The Lighthouse” and his most recent work, a reinvention of F.W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu,” filmmaker Robert Eggers is enjoying the best of moody cinema. Chatting inside the Criterion Closet, Eggers praised the work of Soviet writer/director Sergei Parajanov, pulling his film “The Color of Pomegranates” off the shelf first.

“Parajanov is a really fascinating filmmaker who is really into recreating folk culture with a lot of detail,” said Eggers. “And he does these beautiful tableaus that are interpretation[s] of the art from the world that he’s trying to articulate and bring us into. And it’s really spectacular.”

Continuing his appreciation for film aesthetics, Eggers went on to grab a set of work from Pier Paolo Pasolini, taking care to acknowledge the efforts of his designers in crafting the environments he shoots.

Eggers told Criterion, “The worlds that Pasolini creates with Piero Tosi,...

Luca Guadagnino dodges American Psycho question
Mary Harron
2025 marks the 25th anniversary of director Mary Harron’s Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho (watch it Here), which has come to be known as a cult classic – and for a while, news reports made it seem that, as an anniversary gift, we’d be getting an American Psycho remake from director Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, Queer, and the Suspiria remake. Guadagnino reportedly signed on to direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) back in October, and in December we heard that Austin Butler (Elvis) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) were being considered for the lead role of Patrick Bateman, the character who was played by Christian Bale in Harron’s film. But then, Ellis said on his podcast that he thought the remake talk was “fake news” and that deals hadn’t even been secured with Guadagnino or Burns yet.

Don’t Mess with Grandma: Michael Jai White action comedy reaches Tubi later this month
Ten years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. I had the chance to watch the movie several months ago and had a lot of fun with it (you can read my 8/10 review at This Link), and a larger audience will have the opportunity to enjoy it when it reaches the free streaming service Tubi on January 24th!

Don’t Mess with Grandma shows us what happens when a drunk Army ranger must fight off the vicious robbers who plan to loot the cabin belonging to his sweet,...

To accompany the announcement, the indie pop band released the lead single “Orlando in Love,” a subtle track with an elegant string arrangement. “Orlando in Love” was inspired by Renaissance poet Matteo Maria Boiardo’s “Orlando Innamorato” — an unfinished epic containing 68 1/2 cantos — as well as writer John Cheever’s riff on the poem.

Francis Ford Coppola’s next project will be a “30s-style strange musical”
Image
Francis Ford Coppola‘s big return with this year’s Megalopolis may not have had the reception that he was hoping for. Then again, the renowned filmmaker says he’s never had a project praised right out of the gate. Coppola never felt blindsided by the criticisms as he’s accustomed to butting heads with the studios as he stays true to his visions. He states, “I was almost fired on all of them.” Coppola, then continues, “The lesson is that the same things that they fire you for are the same things that later they give you lifetime achievement awards for when you’re old.”

The Washington Post catches up with the Godfather and Apocalypse Now director as he gets honored at the Kennedy Center for his career. Although Megalopolis was a gamble that ended up flopping, Coppola still believes the film will eventually find its audience and that it will “play for 40 years.

Every MonsterVerse Movie & TV Show

MonsterVerse is one of the most interesting cinematic universes out of all of them. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures-owned franchise has earned over $2.5 billion worldwide and also consists of TV shows on different streaming services but the way it all came together is a bit iffy because of the rights issues and the general laziness that we see in the some of the MonsterVerse films, but still Godzilla vs. Kong is still one of the most iconic movies for me. So, we thought of compiling every project that exists in the MonsterVerse and ranking them according to their Rotten Tomatoes score, here it is.

Another ‘American Psycho’ Adaptation — Too Soon?
Image
Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.

It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?

New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Luca Guadagnino in Talks to Direct ‘American Psycho’ Adaptation
Image
Thanks to Luca Guadagnino, Patrick Bateman will be back.

The auteur is in final negotiations with Lionsgate for a new interpretation of iconic novel “American Psycho,” the studio announced Friday, October 18. The Bret Easton Ellis book was first brought to the screen in 2000. Christian Bale led the original film alongside Guadagnino’s frequent collaborator Chloë Sevigny.

Scott Z. Burns will adapt Ellis’ novel. Rather than a remake of the 2000 feature, Burns’ screenplay will be a new adaptation of the IP. Mary Harron directed the original film from a screenplay by Harron and Guinevere Turner.

Guadagnino’s iteration of “American Psycho” will be produced by Frenesy Films and executive produced by Pressman Film’s Sam Pressman, the son of Edward R. Pressman, who was a producer of the first adaptation.

“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said. “Luca is a brilliant artist,...

Mia Goth's Underrated Horror Movie From 8 Years Ago Is A Subtle Tribute To Universal Classic Monsters
Image
Mia Goth has established herself as one of modern cinema's "Scream Queens." Having starred in acclaimed horror films like Infinity Pool, 2018's Suspiria, and director Ti West's X trilogy (which ended with the 2024 film MaXXXine), Goth now guarantees an audience in whatever film she appears. However, A Cure for Wellness, in which Mia had a leading role, hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves since it premiered in 2016.

Directed by Gore Verbinski, A Cure for Wellness follows Dane DeHaan's Lockhart as he tries to bring his boss back from a wellness center in the Swiss Alps, where he uncovers a dark conspiracy revolving around Goth's mysterious character, Hannah. It's an unnerving blend of Gothic mystery and psychological horror, and the talent behind the film and its tribute to classic horror, particularly Universal's monster movies, make it a must-see for committed horror fans.

Luca Guadagnino Is Already Editing His Bernardo Bertolucci Doc, and Adapting His Other Favorite Novel After ‘Queer’
Image
It is nearly impossible for Luca Guadagnino to discuss one of his films without folding his cinematic hero, Bernardo Bertolucci, into the conversation. While on an upcoming episode of IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast about his forthcoming release, A24’s “Queer,” Guadagnino revealed his documentary about the great Italian director behind such films as “The Last Emperor” and “The Conformist,” who passed away in 2018, is much further along than we thought.

“I’m editing it now,” said Guadagnino while on the podcast. “I have a few more conversations I want to have. Actually, Marty Scorsese, I want to talk to him about it. We’ve been shooting for a while now. They’re not interviews; it’s a conversation. It’s a very personal movie. I am the protagonist of the movie. It could be called, ‘Bertolucci and I,’ which it’s not going to be.”

The current working title is “Joie de Vivre,...

‘Vermiglio’ Review: Italy’s Award-Winning Oscar Submission Is A Sprawling, Ambitious Family Chronicle
Image
TIFF: Sprawling, historical family sagas used to be de rigueur as culminating artistic statements from our greatest talents. They were characterized by the intertwined lives of a large cast of characters—parents, children, and siblings—their hopes and fears, triumphs and disappointments—situated at moments of profound societal change. Classic examples include Thomas Mann‘s “Buddenbrooks” and Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa‘s “The Leopard.” It is, thus, heartening to see director Maura Delpero attempting such a tale in just her second narrative feature.

Una Storia del Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia (A History of the Venice Film Festival)
Image
Is it wrong to say something good came out of fascism? Probably. And it should be noted that Venice International Film Festival’s founder, Guiseppe Volpi, though a leading figure within Italy’s National Fascist Party, did ultimately oppose Benito Mussolini‘s government and the country’s alliance with Germany and Adolf Hitler. Nonetheless, his legacy is tainted as a result of this association, even with his and his family’s massive contributions to cinema.

The Venice International Film Festival began in 1932 as a result of Italy’s growing appreciation and interest in film. The Floating City had already played host to an arts festival known as Venice Biennale since 1893, so this film section was tied in and quickly overshadowed all other showcases. The actual event is held on the island of Lido rather than in the city’s central hub. This location was chosen in order to increase tourism...

Before House Of The Dragon, Olivia Cookes Best Performance Was In This 2015 Movie With 82% On Rotten Tomatoes

Olivia Cooke shone as Rachel in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl before impressively taking on Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon. Olivia Cooke is now best known for her excellent portrayal of Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon, but before that, her best role was in an underrated 2015 film.
