Tom Hardy's Co-Star From 13-Year-Old Martial Arts Movie Shares Exciting Spinoff Update
Image
Tom Hardy's Warrior co-star Frank Grillo confirms the hit martial arts film's upcoming TV spinoff. He also intends to reprise his role.

During an appearance on The Kristian Harloff Show, Grillo was asked to clarify whether Warrior director and co-writer Gavin O'Connor is in the process of producing a follow-up television series based on the film. "He's going to do it as a television show," Grillo responded. "I think it was greenlit, actually, because he asked me a while back, he goes, 'Would you think you'd come back?' [...] I go, 'Yeah, dude, I'll come back."

egarding the overall presence of any returning characters from the film, Grillo noted that O'Connor will "use them sparingly, but significantly."

Tom Hardys Action Movie with 92% on Rotten Tomatoes Is a Must-Watch
Image
Quick Links Tom Hardy Fights Joel Edgerton in 'Warrior' 'Warrior's Critical Acclaim, Explained Why Tom Hardy Fans Must Watch 'Warrior' Asap

Making its Peacock debut in April 2024, Warrior is one of the best and most acclaimed movies released in 2011. Equal parts riveting Mma action movie, moving domestic drama, and intense sibling rivalry, the movie stars Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton as estranged brothers on a collision course for fighting supremacy. Thanks to the excellent story, gritty direction, and powerhouse performances, it's no surprise that the film holds a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score.

13 years after its underwhelming theatrical run, Warrior stands tall as one of Tom Hardy's best films, featuring one of his most memorable performances. Yet, far from attracting Hardy fans only, Warrior is a must-see for hardcore sports movie enthusiasts, fight fanatics, underdog champions, and those who enjoy emotionally hard-hitting stories that culminate with rousing redemption.

Natalie Portman's Only Western Movie Was Plagued By Behind-The-Scenes Drama
Image
Throughout the 2010s, Brian Duffield more than did his part to keep the art of the original genre movie alive and thriving. Between his screenplays for the babysitter slasher-comedy "The Babysitter," the post-apocalyptic monster adventure "Love and Monsters," and the underwater survival thriller "Underwater", Duffield emerged as one of the hottest talents in Hollywood before fully coming into his own as the writer-director behind the well-received high school horror rom-com "Spontaneous" and essentially dialogue-free alien invasion thriller "No One Will Save You" in the 2020s. But before any of that happened, the first produced film based on one of Duffield's unique scrips became something of a disaster.

The movie in question, "Jane Got a Gun," has the makings of an inventive spin on a familiar tune, much like Duffield's other work. Directed by Gavin O'Connor, the Western casts Natalie Portman as the eponymous firearm-wielding cowlady, a woman whose husband is...

Los Angeles, July 25 (Ians) Hollywood actor Owen Wilson was disappointed not to share any scenes with Jamie Lee Curtis on ‘Haunted Mansion’.

The 54-year-old ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ star features in the new Disney movie as priest Kent, but lamented shooting his scenes separately from the ‘Halloween’ actress who stars as the floating head in a crystal ball Madame Leota.

As per Female First UK, Wilson told ComicBook.com: “Well, I don’t get to work with Jamie Lee Curtis, and I was a little bit sort of, ‘Oh, gosh. That’s too bad. But that was only sort of made more clear, because we were doing some press the other day, and she has great energy, and she’s a very formidable person. I’m a bit more slow, from Texas, and she’s, you know… But I really enjoy her energy.”

Review: ‘Gringo’ is a Cruel, Over-the-Top Dark Comedy
You wouldn’t be wrong to view the trailer for Gringo and think, “I’ve seen this before.” You wouldn’t be wrong to assume it gave away the entire plot either — mild-mannered American is used by his ruthless bosses to perform a dangerous job they refuse to attempt and is kidnapped by a Mexican cartel for his trouble. Will he survive the chaos? Will his bosses save him or extricate themselves from blame? Or will the hapless victim of an increasingly escalating ordeal somehow luck into an escape with or without an avenue towards revenge upon those who’ve done him so very wrong? It’s the same generic potential outcomes every movie with a similar conceit contains and yet the answer isn’t what will keep you sitting until the end.

Matthew Stone and Anthony Tambakis’ script is less interested in Harold Soyinka’s (David Oyelowo) fate than the journey towards it.

Gringo movie review: Mexican bland-off
MaryAnn’s quick take… Woefully undeveloped characters, a thin yet convoluted plot, and a lack of humor in the black comedy. This is what it looks like when a hastily scribbled first draft goes straight into production. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

So this is what it looks like when everyone just goes, “You know what? This first draft of the script is great! Let’s just run with it.” This is almost always a bad idea, but especially so in this case, because the Gringo that we got from screenwriters Anthony Tambakis (Jane Got a Gun) and Matthew Stone (Soul Men, Man of the House) feels like what might have happened when they sketched out a rough outline of their “brilliant” idea — “What...

Nash Edgerton
‘Gringo’ Review: Nash Edgerton’s Wacky First Studio Film Dulls His Dark Comedy Chops
Nash Edgerton
For his first studio film — and only his second feature in two decades — idiosyncratic Aussie director Nash Edgerton loads up on some of his signatures, including lots of bad guys, tons of twists, and a dark sense of humor. Unfortunately, his sensibilities are dulled by a sprawling story that never quite snaps together. Edgerton’s previous feature-length effort, the brutal and brilliant “The Square,” offered up a crime story populated almost exclusively by very bad people, an exercise in how to make even the most vicious of characters impossible to stop watching. For his “Gringo,” Edgerton adds something new: an actually likable protagonist.

Still, it’s not enough to make “Gringo” really pop, and the wacky worldview that Edgerton is so often able to infuse in his works — look no further than his brutally funny and violent short “Spider” for proof of that — never emerges within the confines of his most straightforward comedy to date.

Suicide Squad 2: Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam rumoured to debut
Kirsten Howard Ryan Lambie Simn Brew Nov 8, 2017

Dwayne Johnson's take on Black Adam looks like he might make his first appearance in Suicide Squad 2...

Dwayne Johnson’s debut in the DC Extended Universe may finally be happening. He’s long been cast as the villainous Black Adam, a character set for his own standalone movie. Originally, Black Adam was set to debut in the upcoming Shazam movie, which seemed logical given that Shazam and Black Adam are notable rivals.

But that’s not going to happen now, and when Zachary Levi headlines the Shazam film, he’s going to have to fight someone else. Instead, a new rumour suggests that Warner Bros is looking towards Suicide Squad 2 as a means to introduce Black Adam. This would presumably introduce the character to the big screen in a smaller role first, ahead of the aforementioned standalone film.

Suicide Squad...

Jane Got A Gun review

Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor star in new western Jane Got A Gun. Here's our review...

Maybe it's just my experience, but it might tell you something about how rare female-fronted Westerns are that some of my older relatives have asked me if Jane Got A Gun is related to Calamity Jane. As has been reflected in the vast majority of the genre throughout its cinematic history, men are the agents of frontier mythology and the American dream to such a great extent that women's options are next to non-existent.

In this case, the eponymous Jane (Natalie Portman) is quietly devastated when her husband Bill 'Ham' Hammond (Noah Emmerich) rides home after an altercation with the fearsome Bishop boys (led by Ewan McGregor), riddled with bullets and barely alive. Worse still, the gang are following Ham back to Jane, with whom they also have history, and the...

Ellar Coltrane & More Board Obama Movie; Nash Edgerton’s Next Feature Expands Cast
There were many conversations surrounding Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, most of them bad, and among the more interesting concerned its star, Ellar Coltrane — one of the “what now?” variety. (This interested me so much, in fact, that I asked him about it during an interview in the summer of 2014.) It didn’t take long to get an answer: in September of last year, he signed for James Ponsoldt’s The Circle, putting him in a co-starring position with Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and John Boyega. And now there’s an update from Variety: the actor’s joined Barry, an Obama biopic-of-sorts concerning the future President’s time at Columbia University in 1981.

They share no details about who Coltrane’s playing, though it’s at least known that Devon Terrell (of Steve McQueen’s unsuccessful HBO pilot Codes of Conduct) will step into the main role; Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, M. Night Shyamalan...

Jane Got A Gun Review
The January doldrums strike hard in Jane Got A Gun, an otherwise competent and richly shot Western that places far too much stock in its bland characters and unsurprising structure. The film, directed by Gavin O’Connor, is notably far more concerned with characters over action, but with clichéd personalities and paper-thin motivations spurning the drama into motion, it never truly gets off the ground.

Set in the New Mexico Territory sometime in 1871, the movie starts off with a bullet-ridden Bill Hammond (Noah Emmerich) riding back home to warn his wife Jane (Natalie Portman) that a specter from their past, Colin McCann (a mustachioed Ewan McGregor) is hunting them down. This doesn’t sit well with Jane, so she packs up her daughter, heads to a nearby town, and pleads for help from former fiancé Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton), who refuses to aid her initially because she might have broken his heart,...

'Jane Got a Gun' International Trailer Starring Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton in Jane Got a Gun (2015)
After a particularly troubled production, Jane Got a Gun is finally getting set to hit theaters early next year. The Weinstein Company set the Western for release sometime in February 2016, but while we wait for the release date announcement, foreign distributor Mars Distribution has debuted the first international trailer, along with a new poster. We got our first look at the film with a photo of Natalie Portman that arrived in January, when it was still set to hit theaters on September 4. But a lot has changed since then.

The Western starring Natalie Portman was shot in 2013, but the production got off to a rocky start. Original director Lynne Ramsay abandoned the project on the first day of principal photography, which resulted in Jude Law dropping out as the main villain. Gavin O'Connor came aboard to replace the director, with Bradley Cooper momentarily stepping in to replace Jude Law, before...

Well, this hasn't taken long. The investigation into corruption at football's world governing body, FIFA, continues, and the ramifications to it are ongoing as well. But already, there's a movie on the way.

Gavin O'Connor, who helmed Warrior, has signed up to direct a film based around Chuck Blazer, the American executive who finds himself in the midst of the FIFA scandal. The project is based on the book Houses Of Deceit, by Ken Bensinger, and with the help of Ben Affleck - who's set to produce the film - the project has ended up at Warner Bros.

There had been something of a bidding war for the book rights, and Anthony Tambakis has already been signed up to write a screenplay for House Of Deceit (assuming...

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to produce FIFA corruption scandal film
Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will produce a film about the worldwide FIFA scandal.

The project is based on the upcoming book Houses of Deceit by BuzzFeed's Ken Bensinger, chronicling the role American FIFA executive Chuck Blazer played in the corruption scandal.

Warner Bros has won a bidding war for the rights, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Affleck and Damon are involved through production company Pearl Street Films.

Blazer rose through the football ranks, becoming executive vice president of the Us Soccer Federation, but in the 2010s, he was hit with allegations of bribery and tax evasion.

He later admitted to conspiring to accept bribes alongside other FIFA executives.

Gavin O'Connor, who recently completed work on Affleck film The Accountant, is reportedly attached to direct. Warrior writer Anthony Tambakis is said to be penning the script.

Affleck, O'Connor Team For FIFA Film
"Warrior" director Gavin O'Connor is attached to helm a biopic about Chuck Blazer, the American soccer executive at the center of the ongoing FIFA scandal.

Warner Bros. Pictures won a bidding war for the rights to Ken Bensinger's book "Houses of Deceit" which is being seen as the definitive account of Blazer's role in the largest sports and public corruption scandal in history.

Blazer is one of the biggest reasons for the sport's growing popularity in the United States, but his lavish lifestyle led to allegations of bribery. Ultimately he wa deemed a cooperating witness in May’s arrests of FIFA executives.

Anthony Tambakis is on board to write the script while Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Guymon Casady and Darin Friedman are producing.

Ben Affleck to Produce FIFA Scandal Movie; Gavin O’Connor to Direct
It didn’t take long for Hollywood to capitalize on the embarrassment that is FIFA. The soccer (or football, depending on where you live) organization has been widely know to be corrupt for years, but something was actually done about it in May when the FBI arrested top executives as a result of a lengthy investigation. Now THR reports that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are set to produce an adaptation of Ken Bensinger’s book Houses of Deceit, which was just acquired by Warner Bros. The book is being seen as the “definitive account” of American FIFA exec Chuck Blazer’s role in the FIFA scandal. While one might see this as an opportunity for Affleck to direct, the project already has Warrior helmer Gavin O’Connor attached to helm and co-write with his frequent partner Anthony Tambakis. O’Connor recently wrapped shooting on the thriller The Accountant, which stars Affleck,...

Joel Edgerton: 'Jane Got a Gun shoot was difficult'
Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton in Jane Got a Gun (2015)
Joel Edgerton has discussed the troubled production of Jane Got a Gun, which has been hit by further delays this week.

The Natalie Portman-starring Western made headlines last year when the original director, Lynne Ramsay, was sued by her producers for allegedly failing to show up for the first day of shooting.

Edgerton, who was initially cast as the film's villain before replacing Michael Fassbender in the lead role, spoke to Digital Spy about the fraught and difficult production that followed.

"It was like musical chairs," Edgerton said. "Everybody swapping roles, and the director going Awol.

"We forged a great movie out of fire, because it was a difficult situation, but the result of all those difficulties and hardships along the way has been remarkable.

"I just finished the last piece of work on that movie... I'm really, really proud of it, and I needed to be proud of it,...

Jane Got A Gun: Ewan McGregor Replaces Bradley Cooper
That got your attention, didn’t it? The troubled Gavin O’Connor‘s Western Jane Got a Gun is back on track again – Ewan McGregor has taken over for Bradley Cooper as the villain. The old west today, based on an original script by Anthony Tambakis and Brian Duffield, is a Star Wars reunion of sorts as McGregor will be joining Natalie Portman for the first time since Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith. Production on the film runs through the summer for what will hopefully be a 2014 release, but the villain wasn’t scheduled to shoot until later into the production. McGregor, the...

Ewan McGregor Replaces Bradley Cooper in Jane Got a Gun
Gavin O'Connor
Ewan McGregor has replaced Bradley Cooper in Gavin O'Connor's upcoming drama Jane Got a Gun. We reported last week that Bradley Cooper had to depart the project after the Boston bombings delayed production on the currently shooting American Hustle, which threw his schedule into disarray.

The story centers on Jane (Natalie Portman) whose outlaw husband (Noah Emmerich) returns home barely alive after taking eight bullets. She reluctantly recruits a former lover (Joel Edgerton) to defend their property as her husband's gang comes to finish him off. Ewan McGregor will be taking on the role of the villain and leader of this outlaw gang.

Gavin O'Connor is directing from a script written by Brian Duffield and Anthony Tambakis. The project originally had Lynne Ramsay directing with Jude Law and Michael Fassbender starring.

Production is currently taking place in New Mexico.

Ewan McGregor Reunites With Natalie Portman On Jane Got A Gun
After a month of dealing with some very bizarre issues, including the director not showing up for the first day of production and multiple actors dropping out, it finally seems as though Gavin O'Conner's Jane Got A Gun is finally back on track - and it took a Star Wars connection to get it there. According to Deadline, Ewan McGregor has taken over for Bradley Cooper as the villain in the upcoming western, reuniting him with Natalie Portman for the first time since Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith. In the film, based on an original script by Anthony Tambakis and Brian Duffield, Portman will play the wife of a outlaw (Noah Emmerich) who is forced to call upon an ex-lover (Joel Edgerton) when the husband's former gang arrives at her farm looking for blood. Originally, the antagonist part was going to be played by Edgerton, but...

Lifetime Passes On Renee Zellweger’s Pilot ‘Cinnamon Girl’
Lifetime has decided not to go forward with Cinnamon Girl, its drama pilot co-created and executive produced by Renée Zellweger, which was set against the backdrop of the Los Angeles music and movie scenes of the late 1960s/early 1970s. It tells the story of four coming-of-age girls — Cassie (Allie MacDonald), Lola (Alexis Knapp), Junie (Brooke Anne Smith) and Lou (Jade Bartlett) — and explores their lives at the crossroads of the era’s political, artistic, social and sexual rebellions. Zellweger co-created Cinnamon Girl with Anthony Tambakis (Warrior), and the premise was a combination of Zellweger’s real-life journey from small-town Texas to Hollywood stardom and Tambakis’ lifelong fascination with the Laurel Canyon music scene and the New Hollywood, auteur-driven era that began in the late ’60s. Cinnamon Girl was the last of three produced pilots from Lifetime’s most recent batch whose fate had not been determined. The network recently...

Unsung Gems: ‘Warrior’ a visceral and emotional epic
Warrior

Directed by Gavin O’Connor

Screenplay by Gavin O’Connor, Anthony Tambakis & Cliff Dorfman

USA, 2011

There’s always an element of mystery when viewing films for this column, a naïve and hopelessly romantic despairing at the fact that an absolute gift of a movie is neglected by the masses, especially when said motion picture is universally praised to high heaven by respectable critics. Sadly, this week’s pick is largely understated in its notable success by dint of filling almost all of the criteria for an unsung gem.

Like how The Illusionist was overshadowed by genre and release date neighbor The Prestige, or in the manner that The Thin Red Line was battered by blockbuster Saving Private Ryan, Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior, a mercurial quasi-hit from last year’s calendar, suffered by losing what was ostensibly a coin toss with The Fighter to pick out the best battle arena picture.
