Home Alone Star Reveals Scary Encounter With Real Spider on Set
Image
Home Alone star Daniel Stern has revealed his scary encounter with a real spider on the film’s set. Stern memorably played one-half of the Wet Bandits with Joe Pesci in Home Alone.

The 1990 holiday classic’s climactic scenes memorably involves 8-year-old Kevin McCallister using home-made booby traps to foil the Wet Bandits breaking into his home. At one point, Stern’s character Marv shrieks in horror when a tarantula walks across his face while he’s recovering from being burned by a clothing iron. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Stern revealed that he was completely taken by surprise when it came time to film the spider encounter. “I was kind of in a groove at that point of doing crazy things, so when I showed up on the set to do the spider thing, I thought … 'Let's see what happens. I'm sure they're gonna have a great prop spider.'...

‘Doin’ It’ Review: Even Educated Fleas Know Better Than Lilly Singh’s Inexperienced Sex Ed Teacher
Image
Some film festivals take themselves entirely too seriously. Not South by Southwest, the Austin-based multidisciplinary mega-event where amped-up crowds welcome comedies with open arms — the raunchier the better. This year, one logline stood out as especially promising: “A 30-year-old Indian American virgin gets a job teaching high school Sex Ed.” Alas, “Doin’ It” doesn’t cut it (it’s basically 2014 Haley Joel Osment comedy “Sex Ed” with a cultural spin). The concept is funny, but the execution feels forced, in part because the substitute in question (played by Lilly Singh) is supposed to be following an abstinence-based curriculum. In theory, her deep-seated celibacy should make her perfect for the job.

The movie aims to combat the shame around all aspects of human sexuality, which seems like an admirable but inevitably controversial goal. But “Doin’ It” goes too far straight out of the gate, opening with an embarrassment no teenager can...

Josh Hutcherson Reveals He Lost Out on ‘Home Alone’ Role
Image
Josh Hutcherson has starred in some memorable projects since starting in the industry as a child, but there’s one role he lost out on that might surprise fans.

During a recent interview with BuzzFeed, the actor revealed he auditioned for one of the Home Alone films when he was younger.

“I was probably 11, I think, when I auditioned for it,” the Five Nights at Freddy’s actor recalled. “It got down to me and the other guy. That was the first time that I tasted rejection, so that was really hard.”

Though Hutcherson didn’t share what installment in the Home Alone franchise he auditioned for, based on the timeline, it would have been one of the newer films. Since the first two movies that Macaulay Culkin is most known for were released in 1990 and 1992, right around when Hutcherson was born.

As for the other installments, Alex D. Linz...

Every Home Alone Movie (Including The Reboot), Ranked
Image
Few franchises are as controversial as the feel-good Christmas family comedy "Home Alone." The first two films are widely beloved, bonafide staples of the American Christmas movie canon. However, the subsequent sequels — of which there are many — are almost universally despised. Most people haven't seen all of the "Home Alone" movies, and they might be left wondering — are any of the follow-up films worth watching?

Some feel that Macaulay Culkin leaving the franchise after the second film is what set the subsequent movies up for failure. In this critic's opinion, the "Home Alone" entries 3-6 suffer from a lot more than bad casting. However, I watched every "Home Alone" movie so you didn't have to, and I am here to answer some age-old questions. Firstly, is "Home Alone 2" better than the original? And secondly, are any of the follow-up films worth watching? My answer might surprise you.

You might disagree,...

Home Alone Disney+ Reboot Casts JoJo Rabbit's Archie Yates, More
Joseph Baxter Rosie Fletcher Dec 11, 2019

A Home Alone reboot movie is in the works, set for an arrival on streaming platform Disney+.

Disney is seemingly dominating the entertainment industry these days with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars and its incredible animation back catalog, emboldened now more than ever with self-distribution grandeur, with streaming service Disney+ (home of Star Wars serial smash The Mandalorian!) providing a platform on which more of its rebooted IP can manifest, as recently exemplified by the debut of its live-action Lady and the Tramp movie.

Home Alone, a piece of property cheese nabbed by the monolithic Mouse in the company’s recent acquisition of Fox, happens to be on the docket for a Disney+ reboot treatment, joining similarly-fated properties in Night at The Museum and Diary of a Wimpy Kid; a reveal made by big boss Bob Iger at a Q3 earnings call back in August,...

‘Anne With an E’ Boss Explains the Story Behind That Foxy New Scene-Stealer
Amybeth McNulty in Anne with an E (2017)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 2 of “Anne With an E,” including the finale.]

“Anne With an E,” Moira Walley-Beckett’s take on the classic Canadian children’s tale “Anne of Green Gables,” had already diverged from the source material, and that means adding characters to expand the world beyond the pages. On the Netflix series, which recently debuted its second season, this helps to reflect the real, historical world it inhabits.

The beauty of Prince Edward Island has always been integral to the story of orphan Anne Shirley Cuthbert (Amybeth McNulty) because she had two escapes from her life of loneliness, drudgery, and abuse: reading and nature. For much of her childhood, her only companions were the plants and animals she spoke to as if they were friends. In Season 2, “Anne With an E” adds a new character, a red fox with a black tail, who gives Anne her first animal that she has an ongoing...

‘Anne With an E’ Boss Answers Burning Questions About the Queer Soirée, Season 3, and More
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Anne With an E” Season 2, including the finale “The Growing Good of the World.”]

The character of Great Aunt Josephine Barry in the “Anne of Green Gables” books has always been a fan favorite because she seemed to truly understand and encourage the unique aspects of the orphan that transformed the lives of those in Avonlea. In the Northwood Entertainment-produced Netflix adaptation of “Anne With an E,” it’s revealed that her perception and empathy comes from her own personal struggles: Aunt Josephine (Deborah Grover) is gay.

Series creator Moira Walley-Beckett spoke to IndieWire about adding this extra dimension to the beloved literary character, as well as more realistic touches for Canada in the Edwardian period, and what she’s eyeing for Anne Shirley Cuthbert (Amybeth McNulty) in Season 3.

“Upon reading [the novel] again as an adult, I was wondering about Aunt Jo,” said Walley-Beckett. “In the book, she’s a...

Er, a Home Alone film that won't even call itself Home Alone 5? This doesn't bode well - does it?

Spoilers lie ahead.

You could be forgiven for thinking that Home Alone 4 was the pitiful last gasp of once-majestic franchise. But time heals all wounds, including (apparently) fatal ones. Ten years after Home Alone 4, someone willed the series back to life. And this time they were determined not to squander the lingering goodwill that anyone might feel for the series.

The good news is that, over 20 years since the original was made, many of the kids who watched Home Alone now have kids of their own. And do you know what Gen Y adults like? Anything they remember from their childhoods. So it is that in the wake of Transformers, GI Joe and My Little Pony, we find ourselves the audience for a new Home Alone.

Home Alone... 5? The Jerk Too? 8 unbelievable straight-to-tv sequels
There's straight-to-video shame, then there's straight to TV shame. The following small screen follow-ups, then, are the most shameful of the lot.

Please note, however: all of the following first aired on the small screen. They may have ended up on DVD later, but they're telly specials through and through...

1. Home Alone 5: The Holiday Heist (2012)

Original film: Home Alone (1990)

Returning cast members: None

Stars: Christian Martyn, Jodelle Ferland, Malcolm McDowell

You'll remember the first two, and might have a dim recollection of the third - new kid, new goons - and the fourth will, hopefully, mean nothing to you (old kid, new actor playing kid, old goons, new actors playing goons, shot in South Africa).

The fifth, however, is the biggest stinker of the lot, a schmaltzy Christmas edition with a new kid, new family and new goons. Also, Malcolm McDowell - of Clockwork Orange fame - is in it,...

“Home Alone: The Holiday Heist” star Christian Martyn carries on proud tradition
Even though Macaulay Culkin may have grown up, the Home Alone spirit remains alive and well with Christian Martyn, a 12-year-old Canadian actor who gets his turn roughing up some would-be burglars in ABC Family’s Home Alone: The Holiday Heist, premiering tonight at 8 as part of the network’s “Countdown to 25 Days of Christmas.” It’s the fifth flick in the popular franchise, which began in 1990 with what became the highest-grossing comedy of all time. Culkin returned as Kevin McAllister for the 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, before handing over the reins to Alex D. [...]...

'Home Alone: The Holiday Heist': It takes two to fill Macaulay Culkin's shoes
A sequel may have different characters and actors, but thanks to the original movie, countless viewers know what to expect from anything with the title "Home Alone."

The John Hughes-written, Chris Columbus-directed 1990 comedy -- which famously made a star of Macaulay Culkin as a resourceful youngster outwitting thieves who invaded his family's home -- has yielded three follow-ups, two for theaters and the other for television. Now there's another: ABC Family debuts "Home Alone: The Holiday Heist" Sunday, Nov. 25, with the first "Home Alone" immediately preceding it.

In the new tale, instead of Culkin's Kevin, it's a just-relocated boy named Finn (played by Christian Martyn) who fends off crooks along with his sister (Jodelle Ferland) when what the siblings initially think are ghosts haunting their new home turn out to be burglars (Malcolm McDowell, Debi Mazar, Eddie Steeples). Seven-time Emmy winner Ed Asner also is in the cast,...

First Look At CW's 'Green Arrow' TV Series; Poster For Lena Dunham's 'Girls'; Idris Elba & Matthew Macfayden Both Find Small-Screen Roles & More
Batman and "The Dark Knight" aside, D.C. Comics haven't had much joy on the big screen, with last year's "Green Lantern" being only the latest in a series of misfires, although they're hopeful that next year's "Man of Steel" will revive Superman. We say revive, but actually the superpowered Kryptonian only last year wrapped up a popular ten-year run with the TV series "Smallville."

While that show was a long-running hit, they've again not had much success in moving it beyond the single character: Batman spin-off "Birds of Prey" lasted a single season, "Human Target" didn't quite make it, and last year's "Wonder Woman" never made it beyond a pilot. But that doesn't mean they're done trying, as the CW is getting ready to shoot a pilot for "Arrow," a TV series based on the popular hero and Justice League member Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, and just debuted...

'Home Alone' Heading To TV
Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, and Daniel Stern in Home Alone (1990)
Macaulay Culkin may be past his "Home Alone" days, but the franchise lives on. ABC Family has just announced that "Home Alone 5: Alone In The Dark" is in the works.

The fourth installment of "Home Alone," "Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House," was also made for television, premiering on ABC in November 2002, while the first three films -- two of which starred Culkin -- had theatrical debuts.

The "Home Alone 5" will star Christian Martyn as Finn, an 8-year-old boy who moves from California to a creepy house in Maine, which he is convinced is haunted by a ghost.

Determined to catch the ghost in action, Finn sets up a series of traps. But, in true "Home Alone" style, the traps are beneficial in an unexpected way. They end up catching a group of thieves who try to break in while Finn and his sister are left home alone...

Cue that scream: 'Home Alone' to get a Macaulay Culkin-free fifth (!?) installment
Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, and Daniel Stern in Home Alone (1990)
Assuming this won’t be some sort of insane hybrid of beloved holiday classic Home Alone and Uwe Boll “masterpiece” Alone in the Dark, ABC Family has announced that they will air the fifth installment in the Home Alone franchise, titled Home Alone 5: Alone in the Dark. (On second thought, that would be sort of amazing.)

Alas, fans of the 1990 Macaulay-Culkin-battles-home intruders comedy will still watch in complete horror as the Home Alone name carries on without the exploits of Kevin McCallister and the wet/sticky bandits. In addition to coming to terms with this, devotees of the original...

Katie Couric's talk show will premiere in September; Denise Richards visits 'The Blue Lagoon' and more TV snacks
Bite-sized bits of TV news:

- Katie Couric will return to your TV screens on a regular basis beginning September 10, 2012, when her syndicated talk show "Katie" debuts. It'll be shot in front of a live studio audience in Manhattan every weekday. [ABC]

- Fresh off her cameo as an idiot on "30 Rock's" season premiere, Denise Richards has signed on to the cast of Lifetime's remake of "The Blue Lagoon." The original 1980 movie starred Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins as scantily-clad teenage lovers stranded on a tropical island. Richards won't be reprising Shields' role. Instead, she'll play a mother desperately searching for her missing daughter who, unlike her sexting peers, is apparently holed up on an island 1980s style. Atkins will also be making a cameo appearance. [Deadline]

- "The Talk" isn't in danger of being silenced for at least another year. On Thursday (March 8), CBS announced that it would be picking up...

Home Alone 5 is Happening
It's the gift that just keeps on giving! Some 22 years after the original Home Alone hit theatres and turned Macaulay Culkin into a superstar, production on the fifth installment in the Home Alone series is now underway, targeting a holiday 2012 release. Culkin, of course, dropped out of the franchise after the immediate follow-up, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, with Home Alone 3 starring some other kid (but still being written by John Hughes, believe it or not). Many people probably aren't even aware that there was a Home Alone 4, but it was made for TV and released back in 2002. Now the fifth movie will follow the same path; it is scheduled to premiere on ABC Family as part of their "25 Days of Christmas" programming event. Hey, at least it's not a remake, right? According to Deadline, Home Alone 5 will star Malcolm McDowell, Debi Mazar, Edward Asner, Eddie Steeples,...

Mayans Were Right as ABC Family Announces Home Alone 5: Alone In The Dark
Let's be honest, the Home Alone franchise has been dead ever since Alex D. Linz tried to sit in for Macaulay Culkin as an all new character defending his house against criminals in Home Alone 3. A young Scarlett Johansson even appears in that film, but she probably wants to forget that as much as we do. Since then another terrible sequel with a new young actor bringing Kevin McCallister back into the mix and new burglars featuring French Stewart, but nobody has really been paying attention. Now, on the brink of the predicted end of the world, ABC Family has announced the apocalyptic sounding sequel Home Alone 5: Alone in the Dark. Hit the jump for more. Going back to the Christmas feel of the original two films (both of which are solid family films that should be watched every holiday season), this one, which will premiere during the cable network's 25 Days of Christmas,...
